So, we rely on donations from clients towards our costs supplemented by grant aid funding, which is key to our success in supporting our riders. Many cannot exercise in any other way. Stars in Ravenshead The stars were out in Ravenshead on Friday 13th April when Los Pacaminos featuring Paul Young gave an excellent concert enjoyed by a full house at the Village Hall. Knitted poppies appeal returns for second year To mark the centenary of the end of the first world war on Remembrance Sunday in November, Mansfield District Council is to create a display of thousands of knitted poppies.

The council is aiming to build on last year’s successful appeal, when the old Town Hall was decorated with more than 8,000 poppies knitted by hundreds of local volunteers, by adding another 10,000 poppies to the display.

“With this year being the 100-year anniversary of Armistice Day, we want to go even better.

People are also being asked to donate plastic tops from milk and fizzy drinks bottles, which will be used to create a bottle-top mosaic of poppies. Green semi-skimmed milk bottle tops and red skimmed milk tops are especially needed but other colours can also be used in the mosaic. The tops are being collected at the Civic Centre and the council’s offices at Clumber House, Clumber Street. The Royal British Legion is again supporting the call for individuals and groups in the community to get involved by crocheting or knitting poppies. The knitted poppy decorations will adorn part of the route for the Remembrance Day parade, which goes through the town centre via West Gate and into the Market Place on

They will be collected until 21 September and various opportunities will be held in the Market Place throughout the coming months in which people can help tie the poppies to camouflage nets. People will also be able to write messages on a commemoration board. The displays will be installed during the week prior to Remembrance Sunday, on 11th November — exactly 100 years to the day that peace was declared after four years of war against Germany. Remembrance Sunday is now a memorial day for all British and Allied servicemen and women who have died in active service in various wars and conflicts since 1914.

“Many have given their lives so we can live our lives. Remember them on this 100-year anniversary of the first world war.”

The Chafer Threat – Questions and Answers Q : What are Chafer grubs? A : They are the larvae of Chafer beetles. The grubs live in the soil and feed on plant roots of all types, but they are particularly fond of the grass roots of lawns.

Q : I’ve often seen lots of small beetles flying around my garden. Could they be Chafer beetles? A : During the months of May & June, it is very likely that they are Chafer beetles, which are quite easy to identify. Chafer beetles (which are also sometimes called ‘Maybugs’), are approximately ⅜” (1cm) long, with copper coloured wings and either a black or metallic green coloured head. Chafer beetles don’t fly very well and tend to hover about 18” (45cm) above the surface of the lawn. During these months they will mate and then lay their eggs into the turf. The beetles then die off and it’s easy to think that the problem has gone away, but it hasn’t, because they have left their eggs behind. The eggs hatch out after a couple of weeks or so into Chafer grubs, which quickly burrow down into the lawn and start to feed on the roots. Q : What damage can they do? A : The beetles themselves don’t do any damage. It’s the grubs that hatch out from the eggs left behind by the beetles that are the problem. By living in the turf, feeding on the roots and destroying them, the grubs effectively kill the lawn from within. Without roots the grass plant cannot survive. Within a short time a previously pristine lawn can be ruined. Q : When does this damage start to be seen? A : Usually in the late summer. The grubs will have been in the lawn since June, but the damage they do doesn’t usually start to show until about September. Usually, the first sign of problems are areas of the lawn developing yellowing patches. On examination the turf is found to be loose in these areas and easily pulled up to reveal the soil beneath. If the soil is disturbed, the grubs will be found 1-2” (2.5 - 5cm) below the surface. Q : What do they look like? A : Chafer grubs are very distinctive. They are white or cream coloured and are approximately ¾” (2cm) long, with light brown heads and three pairs of legs at the head end. Another big giveaway is that when disturbed, they curl up into a ‘letter C’ shape. A serious infestation can yield up to 20 grubs in a square metre of turf. Q : I have seen birds pecking at these areas on my lawn. Is this anything to

do with Chafer grubs?

A : Almost certainly yes. Birds, particularly members of the crow family (magpies, ravens, etc.),love to feed on the grubs and will pull up the loose turf to get at them. Other predators, such as foxes and hedgehogs, will also dig for them. This secondary damage is often worse than that caused by the grubs. Q : What can I do to counter this threat to my lawn? A : Without doubt, prevention, rather than cure, is the answer. If you see the beetles in your garden there is a very good chance you’ll end up with the grubs in your lawn unless a suitable treatment is applied. If a professional pesticide is applied during July or Augus it will eliminate the newly born grubs before they have had chance to cause any damage. Q : I have previously used Provado Lawn Grub Killer on my lawn with good results, but I can’t find it in the garden centres any more. Why is this? A : Provado Lawn Grub Killer has been banned by the European Union and is therefore no longer available. There were concerns over the product’s active ingredient, Imidacloprid, and its possible effect on bees. Provado Lawn Grub Killer was the only pesticide product available to the home gardener to counter the Chafer threat. The UK government voted against a ban, but was overruled. Q : So, if there is no longer a d.i.y. solution, how can my lawn be protected against the Chafer threat? A : Four Seasons Lawn Care Ltd. hold the necessary Certificates of Competence to apply the professional pesticide which will stop the grubs in their tracks, and prevent them from destroying your lawn. One application of the professional pesticide will

effectively inoculate your lawn against the Chafer threat for twelve months. Q : Does the professional pesticide contain the active ingredient which has been banned? A : Yes it does, but because the treatment is applied in a different way by a qualified professional, there is no threat to bees.

Good world championship start for Birchall Racing Birchall Racing have got their 2018 FIM Sidecar World Championship campaign off to a great start by placing as runner-up at round one held at the famous Le Mans circuit in France.

The Mitchells of Mansfield-supported team were immediately fast on the 4.185km Bugatti Circuit. Under the hot French sun and with the track in perfect condition, the Birchall brothers went quickest on Thursday’s free practice. Backing that up by setting the fastest time in both Friday’s timed sessions, it looked like the pairing had the measure of the circuit and their competitors – their pole time being over half-a-second quicker than their nearest rival. With the bike performing perfectly, the Birchalls went into Saturday’s race as clear favourites. Unfortunately, after not hooking up so well from the start, the 2017 Sidecar World Champions were fifth going into the first corner. Getting his head down and keeping to a fast, consistent pace, Ben Birchall steered the Yamaha powered LCR outfit through

the field, eventually reaching second position on lap three – breaking the circuit lap record in doing so.

The race then played out with the Birchalls trying everything they could to safely pass the leaders, Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes. Despite having the best pace on the day, it wasn’t meant to be and after a fierce battle for the lead over 14 laps the Mansfield team crossed the line in second. Although disappointed not to have taken the win, the Birchalls were happy with their speed and the performance of their machine. Ben : “I’m gutted not to have taken the win, especially after having such excellent pace all weekend. The team, the bike and the engine were perfect, it was just a small mistake from me that cost us those valuable positions from the start. “I tried my best in every way possible to recover and get back to the front, but I couldn’t quite do it. We’ll build off this and come back stronger at the next round – I certainly won’t make the same mistake again.

“The atmosphere at Le Mans was incredible, the crowds were massive and the weather was perfect – it was a real thrill to race there. We’ll concentrate now on our TT bike and get that prepped for the end of May following round two of the world championship in Slovakia. Thanks to all our sponsors and supporters, hopefully we can go one better next time.” Tom Birchall: “Overall it was a great weekend. It felt good to be racing the world championship again and Le Mans was amazing. Obviously, it’s frustrating not to have taken the win, especially after our pace was so good from day one. On a positive note, it shows that all the hard work we put in over the winter has paid off, especially to be over point-five of a second faster in qualifying. “I think in the race we just put too much heat in the tyres after the bad start and by the time we caught up with Tim, it just wasn’t possible to get by. We’ll look forward to the next round in Slovakia and hopefully take the win.”

Our meeting on the 3rd April saw the return of Bob Massey, a local historian from Arnold, His talk was entitled 'Snippets from history - A history of local people'. Bob began his presentation by describing how Arnold started as a hill fort, where Ramsdale Golf Course now stands. It was close to a track through Sherwood Forest that is now the A 60 Mansfield Road. This is the same road that Dick Turpin travelled. Unlike the legend, Turpin was a vicious and cruel thug who was eventually hanged for horse stealing. Bob told the story of the famine of 1316 when horses were killed and eaten, then domestic animals and then rats and other vermin. Eventually it became so bad that in the local jail prisoners were killed and eaten. He said that in 1771 a local servant girl, Mary Jones, was beaten and robbed of 9/- (45p). At his trial the robber promised to repay the money he had stolen and also promised to marry the girl. Unbelievably, the case was dismissed by the court. Bob next told us of a William Saville, a native of Blidworth and Bestwood, who in 1844, when his wife told him to leave her house, killed her and her children. He was hanged in Nottingham in front of a very large crowd but tragically, after the hanging, twelve people were crushed to death and a hundred people injured in the rush to get home. A more agreeable story was of the Daily Mail air race in 1911. There was to be a prize for the first aeroplane to fly from Brooklands race track to Edinburgh and back via Exeter. The planes were following the old Rufford Road and hundreds of people gathered at the White Post Inn to watch the planes go over. It is said they drank the pub dry. One of the planes suffered engine failure and came down in a field just north of Arnold. It was soon surrounded by most of the population of the town who escorted the pilot, H J D Astley, to the Waggon and Horses where he had breakfast. Tom Shipside, one of the first car dealers in Nottingham, and lived at Fountaindale, then drove him to the railway station so that he could travel to London to get help. The next

day the pilot returned with a mechanic and after the engine was repaired, he took off again. These are just a few of Bob’s stories and his talk was very well received. There are many more tales and he has collected them together in a three volume set of books called ‘Snippets from History’. After the break, Chairman Alan talked about the sick clubs or friendly societies of Blidworth. These were organisations that began in the 1700’s to help their members if they were ill and unable to work. This was before the Welfare State and if you were out of work for any reason you and your family might end up in the workhouse or even worse, die of starvation. The sick club we have most information about is the one that met in the New Inn at Blidworth. This public house was built opposite St Mary’s Church and a rule book and membership record book survives. It began in 1767 with each member attending on a monthly basis and paying a fee that in the beginning of the 20th century was a shilling (5p). There were strict rules that members had to follow. Swearing was not allowed, neither was gambling or arguing and fighting and members were fined if they broke any of these rules. If a member had to claim because of illness he was given an amount equal to half his wages which enabled him to feed his family. At this time there was a payment made to the family of £5 if the member died. If a member’s wife died he was paid £1 - 10/- (£1.50) but if he remarried and that wife died he was given just £1. The death of any subsequent wife was not paid for! In the 1920’s the sick clubs were finally disbanded. Alan was

We hope everyone had a fantastic Easter - and enjoyed all their treats. The horrible weather didn’t help, although we did enjoy a lovely hot chocolate whilst the snow was here... we even managed to stay open throughout. And now as I’m sat writing this article, the sun is glorious! We’re getting excited about our planting at the allotment, and even our animals are enjoying getting out of their hutches for some TLC... not sure he appreciates his hair styling though. We have been experimenting with new

Apprenticeship live On Tuesday March 6th as part of the National Apprenticeship Week we were delighted to welcome Simon Navin, from J.P.Morgan to our Digital Arts Centre where our students took part in a live interview with current apprentices with their company.

The 30 minute live link allowed our students to ask questions about career pathways and to get first hand knowledge from the three J.P.Morgan apprentices. The link included an introduction from Phillip Paige, their Head of Early Years Careers followed by a short video about the company. Young people receive top award Young people from 1st Farnsfield Scout Group have been awarded one of the highest awards for their age group. Five young people between 8 and 14 were presented with the Chief Scout award gold and bronze during this term. The Bronze award is the highest award within the Beaver section, aged 6 to 8, and is given for achieving several challenges. These can be as simple as making their bed at home through to going away on a sleepover with others their age. The Bronze award was awarded at the groups 75th anniversary founders Day service to Gerran Windibank. Four scouts were also awarded their Chief Scout gold award. Similarly to the bronze award it is made up of several challenge awards but of a more challenging nature. Rosie, Oscar, Harriet and James were all

awarded their chief scout award by Assistant District Commissioner Fiona Green. She congratulated them on their determination to complete all nine challenges.

The Scouts' spring programme also saw the Scouts take part in a marvel comic night where the young people had the opportunity to use their creative skills in designing their own comic strip hero's. At the end of the term they took a trip to Red Kangaroos trampoline park in Bulwell. Coming up this term the scouts are getting out and about with the bike maintenance badge including a bike ride around the local area. Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum Bilsthorpe We have recently become the proud custodians of Bilsthorpe UDM Banner, which is on long-term loan to us from the UDM. On Friday, March 16th, UDM representative, Mr. Ian Gill, met with our President, the Rt. Hon. Mark Spencer, M.P. at the Museum for the official handing over of the Banner. Earlier, Mr. Gill had generously presented us with a cheque for £2,000 for the construction of a special protective cabinet to house the Banner and also for some improvements to the Museum for the welfare of vulnerable visitors.

Also visiting the Museum on Friday, 16th March, was a film crew from English Heritage with two former miners from the Caribbean, who had worked in Nottinghamshire collieries. They were being filmed as part of a project on “Miners from the Caribbean” by Nottingham historian, Norma Gregory. A big thank you to everyone who supported our stall at the recent “Indoor Market” in Bilsthorpe Village Hall, organised by Bilsthorpe “Flying High” Academy.

Two representatives recently attended a Tourism Workshop at Retford Enterprise Centre, which was a chance to get to know other organisations with interesting projects in the area and perhaps to link-up at future events. We were pleased to receive lots of visitors over the Easter Weekend and Holiday and our younger guests enjoyed participating in “Hunt the Easter Chicks” for which they received a chocolate egg each. Our next event will be our Spring Coffee Morning on Saturday, 12th May from 10.00 am until 12.00 noon in Bilsthorpe Village Hall, Cross Street. As well as a Grand Raffle, Tombola, Cakestall, Bric-a-brac, Jewellery, Books & Jumble, we shall also be featuring a “Memory Lane” Photoboard. Admission is 30p for adults and includes your first drink. Lots of bargains – do come and join us.

Farnsfield Local History Society THE WINKBURN MURDER OF 1821 was the subject of the talk given by local Queen's Counsel and Recorder Paul Mann. It proved to be a very entertaining (if gruesome) evening. A hawker from Chesterfield was on his way to Kelham in July 1821 and was last seen alive in the Blacksmith's Arms inn at Winkburn. His body was not found until December and as there was then no police force the local magistrate in Southwell, Rev. Becher (founder of the Workhouse) was responsible for investigating the crime. Paul explained how he did this by interviewing various people, the victim's father and those who had acquired goods that the Hawker had had in his bag from the person who was then arrested for the murder. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, 9th May when Dr. Richard Gaunt from Nottingham University will tell us about the Pentrich Rebellion of 1817.

On Monday 21st May at 2.00 we have arranged a guided tour of the St. Ann's Allotments in Nottingham, the oldest and most extensive allotments in the world, having Grade 2* listing by English Heritage. Despite awakening to several inches of snow on Sunday, 18th March, our coach departed on schedule to Thriplow in Cambridgeshire for their “Daffodil Festival”. Fortunately, Thriplow had only sustained a dusting of snow but it certainly was a very cold day. Nevertheless, fortified by lots of hot drinks and delicious homemade cakes, we still enjoyed visiting all the attractions and making some purchases at the many plant and craft stalls there. We were also given an insight into the history of the church and an organ recital as part of their “Flower Festival” . The trip was organised by Member, Alan Ashley, to whom a well-deserved vote-ofthanks was given by Treasurer, Jenny Smart. Vallances provided our coach transport. Our Meeting on Wednesday, 21st March, was a talk on “Bees” by local beekeeper, David Bell. David told us about every aspect of bee-keeping from the structure and social hierarchy of the hive to the life-cycle of the honey bee and he also told us about the different types of honey and how it is harvested. He answered Members’ questions throughout and afterwards, we had an opportunity to purchase some delicious honey from his bees. The raffle was then drawn with the first prizewinner being Muriel Haggart. Our Meeting on Wednesday, 16th May will be our popular “Plant Swap & Auction Evening” at 7.30 pm in the Lounge at Bilsthorpe Welfare. Visitors are very welcome. Our “Grand Plant Sale & Coffee Morning” will be held on Saturday, 2nd June from 10.00 am until 12.00 noon in Bilsthorpe Village Hall, Cross Street. There will be lots of bargains and all are welcome.

Garden Bird of the Month - The Pheasant Strictly speaking, the Pheasant is classed as a game bird and is not really a garden bird but if you live in a rural area, you are quite likely to have a Pheasant visit your garden. Once I recall, I had seven of these fine birds on my front lawn– one male and his harem of six females. They certainly do a good job of sweeping up the dropped seed underneath bird feeders. The male pheasant is a very handsome bird and often his guttural calls can be heard before he is seen. When he calls he ruffles his wings at the same time. The female is brown and mottled in order to camouflage herself amongst vegetation. Males will mate with more than one female and they are very territorial and will fight an adversary using their long claws. They can do some really serious damage to each other when fighting. When ready, the female will prepare a grass- lined hollow in the ground to lay her eggs and she will incubate them and rear her chicks all by

It is thought to have been introduced by the Romans but since those times many different introductions from the Far East and even the USA have led the Pheasant to interbreed, so there are

many races and breeds about. They were, of course, introduced for sport and their meat and they are bred and released in Britain in huge numbers for shooting. When driving along country roads, pheasants can be seen in fields and by roadside verges. Unfortunately, many meet their demise on the open road as they have very little road sense and they will often come rushing out of hedgerows only to be killed by oncoming vehicles. All too frequently, the sight of a pheasant on the road is often roadkill. All kinds of people work the allotments, from individuals to happy families. Surprisingly it’s not all about digging, there are many other physical activities involved in the upkeep of the plot. Pottering above, caring and tending your crop, is a pleasure carried out in the open air at a pace set by you and your own ability and seemingly far away from the fast moving modern world. Growing your own food without pesticides, eaten straight from the garden is far superior to produce pumped full of additives, packed to prevent it deteriorating, transported and then sold as ‘fresh’. All the family can be involved, an activity that allows kids to get their hands dirty and learn where food comes from. Planting seeds and building salads together, is a great way to encourage their 5 a day, while also reducing your shopping bill. Come and enjoy the plants, the exercise and the company, if you wish but best of all enjoy when your crops succeed and they are fresh and tasty on your plate. Scouts visit to HMS Sherwood (Continued from page 1) Reservists at HMS Sherwood meet each Tuesday evening and conduct a variety of training through the year. The event was a hands-on exercise in which the reservists got a chance to refresh their weapon handling and drill skills but also demonstrate these techniques to the scouts.

We usually meet in The Centre at St Peter’s Church, Ravenshead, and invite speakers on interesting topics. Recently we heard first-hand experiences of peace-keeping in Iraq after the Gulf War. Over the Summer we are organising visits, in June to a local brewery, and in September to the Aquabox charity in Wirksworth.

Weapons handling is an important skill that all reservists must practice in order to be ready for any potential operations.

Explaining why the scout group was invited along, Warrant Officer Sean Jones from HMS Sherwood, explained: “As we have hosted local sea cadets many times I felt it might be a good idea to open the invitation to other youth groups who wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to mix with the Armed Forces. “The offer was enthusiastically received, subsequently, four members of staff attended with approx. 26 Scouts to get a tour of the unit and take part in some world class parade training from one of the few State Ceremonial trained reservists, Petty Officer Jason Kingham. “HMS Sherwood is made up of volunteers many of whom have a variety of civilian careers so all of our training happens in the evening. We therefore thought that the scouts may enjoy learning what we do on a training evening and we gave them the opportunity to ask any questions they may have about the Royal Navy.” Being a Scout is all about being outdoors, travelling to new places and experiencing new things. Scout Leader, Andy Chick explained: “We’ve had a wonderful time and it’s great to see what ordinary people can achieve.” A plaque was also presented on the evening from HMS Sherwood to the scout group as a memento of their visit.

County show to give families a taste of healthy eating A LIVING fruit and vegetable man, made up of 25 different fruits and vegetables will be visiting the Nottinghamshire County Show to share the importance of healthy living and eco-friendly gardening with families and children. The prestigious county show will be the first agricultural show in the UK to host the 8ft stilted character - named Froojamaflip - who partners with his friend Fred to create an interactive and engaging new walkabout act. The pair will be performing at the popular county show on May 12 and 13 at Newark Showground, which is preparing to be the best show yet as thousands of visitors are expected to experience adrenaline-packed horse-back displays, taste local food produce and see lots of wonderful farmyard animals up close and personal. She was warmly welcomed by President Adrian & his members. Stella enjoyed their hospitality before giving her talk about her many visits to a number of Rotary Clubs in Bermuda.

President Adrian with President Stella Kenyan Educational Support (KES) Rotarian John Pearce gave a very interesting talk on his work with the KES and explained how the charity sponsored some of the most talented but poorest children. KES supports education in Kenya. They provide scholarships to significantly disadvantaged and bright pupils to be boarding students at Bahati Division Academy and other Kenyan schools. They contributed resources and facilities which assisted the education of these students. KES built a school, provided free secondary education and free boarding for students within a 20 – 30 mile catchment area. John explained that the children were unable to travel far as there were no roads, only footpaths from the outlying villages. The work of the trust was a success story because many of the students who attended have gone to university and have become both leaders and professional members of their society. The range included members of the Kenyan Government, Lawyers, IT specialists, engineers and teachers, some of whom have returned to be staff members of the KES school.

Astronomy – We looked to the stars with Phil Randell who shared his vast knowledge of Astronomy with club members and five visitors who joined us recently on a Wednesday evening at South Forest Leisure Centre. Phil described the constellations of the stars and told us how to find them in the night sky. He mentioned that the Moon was Earth’s natural satellite and explained how its gravity pulls the water in our Oceans to create our tides. Also how the 23.5o tilt of the earth gave us our changing seasons. That Earth and the planet Venus are of similar size and the Sun 93 million miles away from Earth. The Sun has an eleven year cycle of Sun-spots whose activity effects and alters the weather on Earth. Phil, who lives in Mansfield, illustrated his talk with slides

Woodborough Bridge Club We are very pleased to say that our first team performed well in the County Teams of Eight League and has won promotion back into the first division after an absence of two years. In for a penny It's funny what you hear when you're not particularly listening and strange where the subsequent thoughts take you. I happened to be standing near a man selling raffle tickets the other day and, on asking a woman whether she wanted just one ticket or a strip of five, I heard the woman respond with the phrase "In for a penny, in for pound." Later in the day as I was shopping in the supermarket, waiting in line to be served at the fish counter, the man in front of me was deciding whether to take the offer of an extra salmon fillet in addition to the two he had requested. The extra fillet was reduced as an enticement. In the end he decided it was worth paying the little extra with the words: "In for a penny, in for a pound." The phrase is often expressed as a declaration that we are prepared to see something through. Or, for the trouble of owing a penny we might as well owe a pound. Also, if a task is going to put us to some trouble we might as well be troubled for a lot rather than a little. This brought me to reflect on the fact that we rarely use this phrase when we talk of our relationship with God. Often we are in for a penny and .... well, we keep the pound safely in our pockets. And I'm not talking in monetary terms here. We often berate God when bad things happen but rarely thank him for the good. When I got up this morning there was enough air for us all to breathe and a new day ahead of me. Thanks God. Even for Christians it's easy to have a faith that is in for a penny but not the pound. We pray expecting instant answers, a quick fix. God, on the other hand, may be in it for the long haul because, well, he's interested in building our faith. If God is truly God then surely he deserves the best we can give him. In for penny, in for a pound.

Diverticular Disease By The Colon Hydrotherapy Clinic Sherwood Diverticular disease is a common inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is characterised by small bulges, called diverticular, that push out from the wall of the large intestine or the colon as it’s commonly known. The diverticular are most commonly found in the sigmoid colon which is close to the rectal part of the gastric track. Diverticulosis is the condition of having multiple pouches in the colon that are inflamed. If the diverticular become inflamed with bacteria, they become infected and the disease is then known as Diverticulitis. This is when it can become very painful and can lead to other complications if not treated. Unfortunately, diverticular disease can often go unnoticed and people often live with the condition without being aware. Sometimes it is only diagnosed when individuals have investigations for other reasons and that is when they find out that they have the disease. WHAT SYMPTOMS MIGHT PRESENT THEMSELVES? Although, as mentioned earlier, some people may live with this disease and not know they have it, others may get symptoms that persist and it’s when the persistence continues that it might be time to get it checked. Some of the symptoms that might present themselves are things such as increased tummy pain, especially on the lower left hand side of their abdomen. Sometimes it is worse after eating, emptying your bowels or passing wind. Others may complain of bloating and moving from having diarrhoea to constipation, sometimes mucus and blood may be present in the stool. Some of the milder symptoms of IBD could be confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) because some of the symptoms presented can cross over. WHY DO WE GET THIS COMPLAINT AND WHAT CAN WE DO?

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO TO HELP THE DISEASE? Self help can be very beneficial, like eating a healthy diet rich in whole grains fruits and vegetables, increasing fibre to minimise feeling bloated and drinking plenty of fluids, especially water and herbal teas. Probiotics can be useful in helping to put back some good bacteria’s into the gut to minimise the effects of the bad ones.

Whilst IBD conditions are quite common, it’s often not really known why one person may get it, as opposed to another. It’s thought that one of the underlying causes of these diseases is chronic constipation and it’s often found in people who eat a diet very low in foods that contain dietary fibre, the substance that help us to form our stool and to help it move along the digestive track into the sigmoid colon ready to be pushed out onto the toilet when nature calls. If you have symptoms that are persisting, like those previously mentioned, it is always a good idea to get them checked out. Your Doctor will examine you and take your history to get a bigger picture of your habits. They may ask about your diet, your bowel habits and movements. If it is thought necessary, more tests may be arranged, such as a blood test or a referral onto a Gastroenterologist. The Gastroenterologist will conduct their own sets of tests possibly including Colonoscopy or CT scan. The GP may prescribe medicines that help to reduce the inflammation in the gut, such a steroids. But, certain types of medicines can come with their own side effects and steroids, whilst controlling the infection and inflammation, may be instrumental in weakening the bowel wall further which could give rise to other complications.

However, not all probiotics on the market are beneficial. Make sure you take advice from a professional who can advise you of good ones to take, so you can be sure to purchase ones that will live all the way down the digestive tract and will not be destroyed by gastric juices at the start of their journey in the mouth and into the stomach. Not only does conventional medicine help with the disease, but the natural health care path can be beneficial. Colonic hydrotherapy can help to gently clear away and loosen the waste, that you don’t want hanging around in the gut as it might cause a flare up and lead to further infections. However, Colonic treatment cannot be administered in the inflammatory stage, or when you are actively taking steroids. Sport End of an era for Wrens 32

Although as I write, Rainworth MW still have a few games to play including a League Cup quarter-final tie at home to Liversedge, by the time this article appears in print the season will to all intents and purposes be over. The Wrens look like finishing in the top half of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division table, but what is certain is that this will have been the final season in this league for the club because, sadly, it has been necessary for financial reasons to step down one level in the non-league system. So not only will Rainworth be playing in a different league next season, they will also be doing so under a new manager after Craig Denton decided to move onto a fresh challenge. Craig and his management team go with the thanks of all at the club for their efforts through a season which has seen the club exceed expectations on the field despite drawing one of the lowest average attendance figures. Next season the club hope to be placed by the FA in the East Midlands Counties League, which will see many more local derby matches with a high percentage of clubs from Nottinghamshire and East Derbyshire. But allow me to let the club chairman Les Lee have his say. Writing in the matchday programme to announce the decision to the supporters, Les said: Rainworth MWFC over the last eight years have been on a journey, wit4h five years in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One South while at the end of this season we will have completed t4hree years in the NCEL Premier Division. Photo: Chairman, Les Lee the Evo-Stik despite being asked to stay. I have always said that our family-orientated club is sometimes too popular among fellow clubs for our own good. The decision we have now taken is one with a heavy heart, but it is one which we fell is the correct one for the future of our club. We are but its custodians, and history will judge whether the decision proves to be the correct one. But the club’s ethos is to live within its means when planning for the future. The decision in no way reflects on our current management team supported by a great bunch of players. They have exceeded our expectations this season while working within tight financial restraints and their camaraderie is there for all to see. We humans are a strange breed. When we are in our teens 20 seems old but as we travel on through life that barrier keeps being pushed back so that when you reach 70 you only think over-80s are old. Alas, age is finite, as we on the committee have found out, losing a number of wonderful members to Old Father Time in the last couple of years. With most of our committee in their

late 60s, 70s, and even 80s, we know that we have to attract young blood to carry the club forward. As well as stepping down, we propose to bring Rainworth Rangers Youth FC under our wing so that we become more of a community club. We hope this move will in time provide a progression for the young players from junior to senior football, and by stepping down we hope to make that transition an easier one. We also hope that this will build up our fanbase and top up our committee, as the greatest fans are the parents of the youngsters. We also have to face the fact that in recent years various income streams have dried up and have been difficult to replace. The club is not insolvent, but we are realigning ourselves to best address our changing circumstances, so that we will still be around to celebrate the club’s centenary in 2022 and look forward to the years beyond that.
