On tenterhooks about whether Serena would prevail so soon after giving birth. On edge to see Federer attempting the seemingly impossible. Relieved that England rugby had prevailed against South Africa. Amazed that English cricket had triumphed so comprehensively against Australia but disappointment about being pipped at the post by India. Worn out by the stress of the British Grand Prix. And everybody baking in the heat and hoping for rain and only watering the gardens in secret at night. BBQs in the garden, tennis on Woodborough courts, football in the park, cricket stumps on the wall, and men in shorts. A typical English summer. No time for Bridge then. But oh yes there is. Forty players turned
out for 24 boards of duplicate bridge at Woodborough village hall last night. A bit of a failure really, because Director Clive had urged us all to speed up to get through 27 boards. The chocolate biscuits were a bit rushed but a very good night nonetheless. As ever. The new committee meets next week for the first time and will allocate roles. It hopes to be able to put lumpy matters such as new constitutions and GDPR behind them this year and concentrate on Club developmental matters such as recruitment and retention, team and competition play, and a teaching program. Bilsthorpe Garden club updates Thank you to everyone who helped at and supported our Plant Sale & Coffee Morning on Saturday, 2nd June. £550 was raised. Thank you also to everyone who supported our stall at Bilsthorpe “Flying High Academy’s” Maypole Event & Tea Party on Thursday, 21st June. We have recently been fortunate enough to visit two inspiring projects, namely “The Flower Pod” at Brackenhurst on Wednesday evening, 20th June and “Eton Avenue Growers’ Association” in Newark on Wednesday evening, 18th July. At both venues we were given a warm welcome, guided tour and generous hospitality. Both events were organised by Pat Jones. From Sunday, 24th June to Saturday, 30th June, Members enjoyed their Group Summer Holiday, which was based in Criccieth, North Wales. Amongst our visits were Penrhyn Castle and gardens, Crug Farm Gardens and Nursery, Bodnant Garden,
Plas Newydd Country House, Hidden Gardens Plas Cadnant, Llanberis Railway & Slate Museum, Plas Brondanw Garden and also Llandudno and Portmeirion. In addition to the above North Wales visits, we visited Tatton Park on our outward journey and Jenny and Tom Williams’ garden “The Laundrey” and also Jodrell Bank on our homeward journey. The holiday was organised by Alan Ashley, assisted by Margaret Wright.
We were pleased to participate in the Flower Festival at St. Margaret’s Church, Bilsthorpe on the weekend of 7th and 8th of July and we thank Member, Sandra Fleet, who was assisted by Jean Manning for a wonderful floral display in the church porch. On Sunday, 15th July, we had a lovely allday coach-trip to Arley Hall and Gardens in Cheshire. The trip was organised by Jenny Smart, assisted by husband, Steve and Ian
Roberts.
Our next event will be our Annual General Meeting and 25th Anniversary Social Evening on Wednesday, 15th August at 7.30 pm in Bilsthorpe Welfare. Buffet refreshments will be served. On Sunday, 2nd September, we shall be holding our Annual Produce Show in Bilsthorpe Village Hall, Cross Street. The event will be open to the public from 2.15 pm and awards will be presented at 3.0 pm, followed by the auction of produce and the raffle draw.

Blidworth and District Historical & Heritage Society
On July 3rd we once again met at the Blidworth Welfare Function Room for our monthly members meeting. On this occasion we were visited by John North. A 50 minute film entitled “Experience Nottinghamshire” was shown by John, and the members and guests thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The complete film was created, produced and edited entirely by John and his wife and the result was a most polished production of the highest quality and presented using equipment of an equally high standard. “Experience Nottinghamshire” included in its topics such subjects as the Cresswell Craggs with exceptionally realistic images of the landscape during the Ice Age between 10,000 and 50,000 years ago. The Dukeries and North Nottinghamshire were well represented such as Ollerton Mill, dating back to 1713, the only working watermill in Nottinghamshire, the Clumber estate, Thoresby Hall and Wollaton just to mention a few, were featured with manificent panoramic views. The film went on to show some wonderful days out that can be experienced in Nottinghamshire. The Moorgreen Show attracts over 20,000 visitors during its two days, Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home of The National Water Sports Centre, its whitewater course is a focal point for English whitewater rafting and kayaking, often holding international events. Nearby is the earliest built brick building in the county, Pierrepont Hall, built by Sir William Pierrepont in 1500 and still lived in by his descendants. We very much look foreward to John North returning soon to present his “Experience Derbyshire” Following the break, a talk was delivered by Jayne Williams and the subject
concerned the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) and the connection to her own grandmother – Elsie Saville. Originally the WRVS was the Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS), not attaining the “Royal” until 1966 when the Queen became their Patron and until 2013 when it changed again to the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS). Formed in 1938 as the WVS for Air Raid Precautions (ARP), today the RVS is the largest voluntary organisation in British History and celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.

Following on from the death of Lady Reading in the early 70s they changed with the times and became a registered charity. Refocused their efforts to “serve the communities” and in 2013 became the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS). Elsie Saville had been a long serving member of the WVS receiving a medal and clasp in recognition of that service. The question was, what did that service entail and how long is “long service”? An enquiry to the RVS was made. The family history and their answer was explained. Elsie started in 1938 and served until 1990. The medal was issued for exceptional service of 15 years where a minimum of 40 duties per year were done; the clasp for a further 12 years’ service after that. The question is what of the other 25years? The presentation was well received with people expressing their interest and interaction. Our next three meetings are as follows; •August 7th - Peter Hammond with Nottingham’s own Oliver Twist. •Sept 4th- Peter Smith and the history of Rufford Abbey. •Oct 2nd – Colin Hobday, Historic Gardens and Houses. Our meetings are in the Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45 pm and ample parking is available. New members are always welcome. A very busy summer at Sam’s Workplace Well another mega busy month at Sam’s Workplace. We were approached by a fantastic young man from Joseph Whitaker School, Brandon, who asked if he could undertake a sponsored walk to raise funds for Sam’s Workplace. Of course we said yes - on 30 June this young man walked around Rainworth in scorching heat, and always with a lovely smile on his face to raise funds for Sam’s Workplace. Despite the absolutely scorching weather, we really enjoyed the day and enjoyed the music and other stalls who were there ...and then followed by having another stall at a Kool Kids craft fair on Sunday, phew!
We were very lucky to be invited to the Parent Carer Conference at Edwinstowe House on 13 July 2018 - Sam and Jordan did a fantastic job of promoting Sam’s Workplace, and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves!!
We are also very happy to be part of the Asda green token appeal …. please please please, if you shop at Asda please choose Sam’s Workplace to receive your green token. We are hoping to win to keep our crockery supplies updated as we do have a fair amount of breakages!! We are still continuing our hard work at the allotment - we are losing lots of plants in this hot weather, but we continue with our growing plans; our strawberry crop has been fairly good this year, as has our onions!! We are there every day to ensure the health and well being of our animals especially during this extreme heat …. We are also having excellent sales of our cornflake tarts and banoffee pies - at 50p

We are also so very grateful to Veolia for their support of our allotment and compost project - they kindly donated £591 towards our new compost bins - thank you! Finally, here’s a sneak preview of what we’ve been working on for the summer holidays …. think magic, think tails, think wings …… better still come in and see it for yourself, it is amazing!!!! Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum Thank you to everyone who supported our stands at Bilsthorpe “Flying High Academy”, Bilsthorpe Scouts’ Tabletop Sale, our Welfare 6oth Anniversary Celebrations, Manor Farm “Open Day” and our Welfare “Fun Day”. We have also enjoyed Group Visits from: Bilsthorpe St.John’s Badgers, Bradgate U3A, Rainworth U3A, Ruddington Museum Heritage Group and two visits from Hucknall Tourist Regeneration Group (an excellent organisation run by volunteers, who run regular Summer mini-bus excursions from Hucknall Library). On Thursday, 7th June, three Members attended Cresswell Crags Museum for the launch of the “Dothill Project Exhibition, organised by Dr. Natalie Braber and featuring work by local schoolchildren, some of which took place at our Museum. On Thursday, 14th June, five Members attended Notts Heritage Forum Conference & Awards at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus. Several Museums, including ourselves, have been engaging in projects, with the assistance of Heritage Forum mentors and the Conference was a chance to showcase these projects. Member, Bob Bradley, assisted by archivist, Andrea Swallow, researched “Mining in Bilsthorpe & Surrounding Villages 1918 – 1928” and gave an excellent presentation
on the display to assembled Forum Members. Later, at the Awards Ceremony, we were surprised and delighted to receive the “Judges Special Award” for our achievements as a totally volunteer-led museum, especially the attainment of Accreditation. We were also pleased for our friends at both Mansfield Museum and Bassetlaw Museum, who received well-deserved awards.
We were pleased to participate in St. Margaret’s Church “Flower Festival” on 7th and 8th July. The theme was “Weddings” and we wish to express thanks for the donation of a vintage wedding dress and accessories, which we used in our display and also the kind loan of wedding photographs, which we copied for the event. On Wednesday, 11th July, we were delighted to participate in World War I “Heritage Day” in Rufford Park with an exhibition of both mining and home life at the time of World War I. We enjoyed the interest shown by the visitors to our marquee, particularly the coachloads of schoolchildren.

Get gardening with Greg Awesome August Ok, I take it all back Mother Nature, bring back the rain and the downpours if only for a little while, all is forgiven and I miss you! And besides, I think im getting a repetitive strain injury from reeling my hosepipe in and out. Though on the plus side i've now got biceps like Popeye (showing my age there I know) and an iron grip from holding the spray trigger for so long. But still, Summer is now in full swing and needs must as the season drives, so lets have a look at a few things we need to think about this month. Dead heading and cutting back of perennials and bedding plants alike as their flowers fade will give them a new lease of life and provide them with an opportunity to produce a few more flowers before winter, add to this a bit of liquid feed every couple of weeks while they are actively producing new growth and flowers to give them the best encouragement.
While cutting back faded blooms, take care to save any seed heads (such as poppy) that you wish to multiply stock of for drying and later sowing ( I also like to leave a few seed heads on the plants here and there to help the wildlife in the garden too if I can). Collected seed heads can be dried on a tray in a warm windowsill, airing cupboard or greenhouse until they open (some may not open naturally so will have to be crushed or split), these can then be shaken into paper bags and placed into a cool dry place until they are sown (usually in Autumn or Spring). Keep an eye out for greenhouse pests too at this time of year, particularly red spider mite during particularly hot and dry spells who's sap feeding habit can cause serious damage to glasshouse crops and shows itself as mottling of leaves and early leaf drop and in extreme circumstances plant death. You can discourage these by regu-
larly damping down your greenhouse walls and floor, this will increase the humidity levels which the mites do not like. And last but not least, watering! August is usually one of the driest months of the year so it is essential to keep your plants supplied with water, particularly those in containers. If your water butts are empty, like mine try using 'grey water' from around the house where you can as long as it doesn't contain too many chemicals. Accolades for swimming pools and lifeguards Two swimming pools in Mansfield have been highly commended by the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS), following unscheduled ‘mystery shopper’ visits. The visits were part of a company-wide initiative by Serco Leisure, which runs the pools — the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre and Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex — as well as the award-winning Oak Tree Leisure Centre and River Maun Recreation Centre, Mansfield. Out of a sample of 35 Serco Leisure UK pools, the Mansfield pools finished overall joint first with total scores of 96%. Mansfield’s lifeguards scored full 100% ratings for observation of duties, spot-check
questions, and competency. The unannounced spot-checks by officials from the RLSS’s training subsidiary, the IQL, tested the centres on the standards of their training, consistency of documentation, and overall attitude and competence of the lifeguards. It was the latest success for centres operated by Serco for Mansfield District Leisure Trust, Mansfield District Council’s arm’s-length management organisation for leisure facilities in the district. Gavin Short, of the leisure trust, which oversees the running of the centres with Serco Leisure, said: “To receive such great feedback from a mystery visit is very pleasing.”
As well as the life-saving accolades, this year the leisure centres’ successes in Mansfield include: •Oak Tree Leisure Centre winning Midlands Leisure Centre of the Year in awards run by UK Active. •Inclusive Fitness Initiative accreditation for Water Meadows, which recognised it as a place that reaches high accessibility standards for people with disabilities. •High scores for Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre and Water Meadows in the Sport England benchmarking scheme, Quest, which assesses the management of leisure centres. •Investors in People accreditation, awarded to good employers.

Sign up for the Mansfield 10K The charity behind the Mansfield 10K is appealing for runners to sign up to the popular annual event. The race, on 16th September, has routes over 5k and 10k. Medals will be given to participants. Sarah Cobb, fundraising officer at Reach Learning Disability, said: “Following on from the success of last year’s sell-out event, we are confident we can once again fill the streets of Mansfield. “The event creates a warm community spirit in the town centre, with support from spectators and local businesses. “We want to thank everyone who gets involved in the race, which raises money for Reach, a charity local to Mansfield with a base in the town centre.”
Reach, which has bases in Mansfield, Newark, Southwell, as well as horticultural social enterprise, Flower Pod, supports 200 adults with learning disabilities. Money raised from the event will help the charity continue to run courses, social activities, day trips and holidays for clients. Prices for the 10k route for affiliated runners is £14, £16 for non-affiliated runners. For the 5k, runners aged 16 and over will be charged £12 and junior runners, aged between 12 and 16, £8. Garden Bird of the Month - Marsh Tit or Willow Tit?! These two species are notoriously difficult to distinguish. Marsh Tits are by far the more likely of the two in many areas but if you have Willow Tits in the vicinity they can be tricky to tell apart, and both can visit garden feeders. Both birds are the same size as a Blue Tit. The backs are a uniform brown and they are buff coloured below. Both have white cheeks. Marsh Tits tend to have glossy black caps, whilst the Willow Tit’s black cap is duller and stretches further down in to the back of the neck. There are other subtle differences but these are very difficult to observe on such active birds. One certain way of telling each bird apart is by their call. The call of the Marsh Tit is sneezy ‘pitchou, pitchou’ and the call of the Willow Tit is a very nasal, drawn out ‘chay,chay.’ If you don’t hear any call, it’s worth trying to get a photo. Otherwise it may be impossible to determine the identity with 100% confidence. The birds also differ in a number of ways ecologically. The Willow Tit prefers coniferous woodland or damper conditions with birch, alder and willow for nesting. It is a hardy bird and can be found in more northerly areas of the country and higher altitudes than the Marsh Tit. Each year it will always build a new nest whereas the Marsh Tit will always use existing cavities in trees for nesting. The Marsh Tit, despite its name, prefers drier habitats and is found in lowland broadleaved woodland. Of course, there can also be an overlap of territories
Marsh Tit - John Harding which makes identifying them even more confusing. If you do get either of them visit your bird feeders, I wish you the best of luck in identifying them. Some, too, are ill advised to perform high impact aerobics for health reasons but are looking for cardio and toning exercise. For these people, water aerobics is just perfect.

People across Nottinghamshire urged to shape the region’s health priorities People living in Nottinghamshire are being called on to put forward their views on what the region’s health priorities should be. NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands, a regional health research organisation tasked with speeding up the adoption of science to the frontline of the NHS, has launched a consultation. Formed in 2013, it has been given the opportunity to apply for another round of funding from 2019 and wants to gather people’s views on what conditions should be priorities. The results of the Our Health, Our Way consultation will inform the focus of a multimillion pound application to the National Institute for Health Research, which is the research arm of the NHS, for a new set of studies. Professor Kamlesh Khunti is the Director of NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands and is also Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester. He said: “Health research provides us with the opportunity to advance care by allowing us to learn more about conditions and how best to prevent, treat or manage them.
“We have been working to improve the health of the East Midlands since 2013 and have countless successes to shout about. It is now time to apply for another round of funding from 2019, which will enable us to continue to our work. “This is a chance to ask the good people of our region about what matters to them when it comes to healthcare. We are applying for an investment which has the opportunity to improve care across the East Midlands and we want to hear people’s ideas and thoughts to help us design new research studies.” NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands has been helping to prevent type 2 diabetes by embedding a programme in the Loughborough area designed to help people prevent the condition, identifying 2,053 people as being ‘at risk’. The project entitled Let’s Prevent has provided learning which has been used in the bidding process, refinement and implementation of the National Diabetes Prevention Programme in the East Midlands. In April, the organisation also continued to support the rollout of a risk score for type 2 diabetes in South Asian languages with the release of a Punjabi version following Gujarati and Bangladeshi versions. The organisation has been helping lead the Leicester Diabetes Model of Care evalua-
tion, which will be shortly be presented to Clinical Commissioning Groups in Britain as well as health service providers in China and India. Work carried out by the organisation also includes implementing and assessing an online tool that assists diagnosing children with ADHD, which initial evaluation shows that it can lower NHS costs by 22 per cent and also reduces diagnosis of the condition by average of 145 days. In another study, an evaluation of an exercise programme to help prevent older people from falling was completed with the results likely to be adopted across the country with initial interest from NHS England amongst others. Results from completed questionnaires will be collected and will be used to develop ideas for the funding application. The questionnaire should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands is collaboration of the NHS, universities, patients and industry, which sets out to improve patient outcomes by conducting research of local relevance and international quality. A world of colour and creativity is being organised for youngsters at West Nottinghamshire College’s art studio this August.
The summer art workshops on both 6 and 7 August will take place at the Derby Road campus and will be aimed at different age groups to bring out their artistic talents. The Creating Disney World sessions are for five to eight-year-olds which will include making their favourite Disney characters through a range of art and craft activities. Tutors will support groups with individual help and guidance on the two-day course. This course runs from 9am to 12pm on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 August and costs £25 for both days.
The workshop for older children aged nine to 13 will involve painting acrylic on canvas. Children will be given a step-by-step demonstration with help and guidance to draw and paint their favourite characters, using specific techniques.

Students kindness travels around the globe An appeal to West Nottinghamshire College staff and students to donate spare stationery has seen crates of supplies help school children in Zambia.
The Pencil Case appeal, originally set up in March by the college’s student experience team and local charity The Peaceful (Uhuru) Trust, asked students to bring in unwanted pencils, note pads, rulers, books and games as well as reading books and jigsaws – all to help stock a newly-built classroom over 6,000 miles away. The Peaceful Trust has shops in Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse and Nottingham, which sell furniture and clothes and household equipment. Money raised in the shops goes to projects both at home and abroad, particularly in poor areas of Africa and Asia.

Up to £20,000 in funding available for local charities Local charities and community groups are being encouraged to apply for a share of a funding pot of over £3 million that has been raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery to support projects which will help people in the area and their communities. Applications are open from 1 August until the 15 August, 2018, with both community groups and local charities being eligible to apply for the grants of between £500 and £20,000. The hot topic - Our Gut Microbiome So what exactly is it and why is it so topical at the moment? Well, it’s a common term to describe the microscopic organisms in our gut. It has its very own and unique ecosystem of friendly bacteria that keeps us healthy. The Gut Microbiome has come under the spotlight, particularly in the last few years, due to its importance in our overall health. When our gut is working well it can be likened to a well tended garden; if you water the plants and provide certain conditions for the flora and forna to live in harmony, then everything ticks along nicely. WHAT WE EAT EFFECTS US ALL DIFFERENTLY You might have heard of the Human Genome Project. This project has been rolled-out to incorporate the area of Gut Microbiome and its diversity. Members of the public have been encouraged to take part and send off samples of their microbes from their skin, mouth and gut. What scientists found was that although genetically we may be similar, our gut microbes are all very different and this can affect the individual in many different ways. For example, our weight; while some people can eat carbohydrates and not show any adverse effects, others may bloat and find it hard to digest. That’s why some of us may have great results from eating certain foods whilst others do not get the same outcome. WHAT TELLS US THAT OUR GUT IS NOT IN THE GREATEST CONDITION? CONSTIPATION Most of us have suffered constipation at one time or another and know that a constipated stool remaining in the gut can often cause a lot of pain and when it sits for some time it produces gas which, in turn, causes bloating and real discomfort. Wrens announce new main sponsor Rainworth MWFC are delighted to announce that their new main sponsor for the coming season is Tomlin Personnel. The company, where assistant manager Paul Rockley is employed in his day job, are putting in a substantial amount of cash and have also supplied a brand new kit for the club’s debut season in the East Midlands Counties League, and in response to this the Kirklington Road Stadium is now to be known as the Tomlin Personnel Stadium. A further boost for the Wrens is that Worksop Van Hire have also provided a new away kit. The Wrens hope for a long and happy association with both companies. On the field, as I write, Rainworth have played four pre-season friendlies, all at home, beating FC Bolsover 3-0 and Mansfield Town Academy 4-1, but lost 3-2 to Basford United and 2-0 to new EMCL rivals and old friends Sherwood Colliery. Two matches remain in the pre-season build up, both away, at Harrowby United of the United Counties League on Tuesday 24th July, and then Mansfield Hosiery Mills on Saturday 28th. It was hoped to include the full fixture list in this month’s issue but unfortunately these had not been finalised in time for the print deadline. However, the opening fixtures are to hand, and the Wrens will begin their season proper on Saturday, 4th August, at home to Heanor Town. Like Rainworth, the Lions have taken a voluntary step down one level for financial reasons, in their case from the Midland League. That is followed on Tuesday 7th with a
trip to Kimberley Miners’ Welfare, before the Wrens kick off their FA Cup campaign for the season on Saturday 11th at home to Midland League club Dunkirk, who won promotion last season as EMCL champions. The winners of the tie will be away to either Kirby Muxloe of the Midland League or AFC Mansfield, promoted last season from the Northern Counties East to the Evo-Stik League Division One East. There is a home local derby to come in the FA Vase first qualifying round, when Teversal visit on Saturday, 1st September, the winners visiting either Clifton All Whites or Belper United in the next round. Manager Ben Marvin is assembling a predominantly young side aided by a few experienced players and is confident of a good season. A further boost is that the club have linked with youth side Rainworth Rangers, who will now be known as Rainworth MW Youth, with the exception of the
U16s who still wish to remain as Rangers for one more season. This will provide a stronger community link between the club and the village, and it is hoped that this will lead to more people coming through the gates, and ultimately provide a direct path from youth into senior football. The full list of clubs competing in the East Midlands Counties League for the coming season is: Most of the league games will be local derbies, and the club would dearly like the support of Rainworth people as they move into this next chapter of their story. Adult admission is £5, with just £3 for seniors, while youngsters are in for just £1, or free if accompanied by an adult. And there are also considerable savings on these prices by purchasing a season ticket for £60 adults and £40 concessions for 19 league games.
