Dear Brothers & Friends

Looking back over the past year, we are amazed by the resilience of our Brotherhood and the strength with which Chi Phi has rebounded from the challenges that all social organizations faced in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We brought a renewed excitement and energy to the City of Brotherly Love for our 156th Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Throughout the weekend, we spent time celebrating the triumphs of last year as well as looking ahead to the future.

We enter the new academic year with a continued dedication to reconnect with our Alumni Brothers. As an organization we have focused on establishing more City Clubs (information on how to start a City Club can be found on page 18) and looked at a variety of opportunities to engage Brothers with whom we haven’t connected in recent times. We hope that all of you will join us at an event in your city soon.

In addition to the increased number of Alumni events, our National Office staff performed 61 Chapter visits (all but a few in person) for our undergraduate Brothers. The staff’s hard work is evidenced by our recruitment figures which defied expectations. Many of our Chapters welcomed some of their biggest new member classes in their history, a trend that is continuing so far this academic year.

These successes were also mirrored in the Educational Trust this past year. The 2021 Founders Day Campaign exceeded the initial campaign goal of $100,000 by raising over $126,000 in unrestricted support. Thanks in part to this campaign and all the generous donors of the Trust, over $96,000 was awarded in merit-based scholarships, a $12,000 increase over the previous year. We are now focused on the 2022 Founders Day Campaign where we have set a goal of raising $150,000. We hope we can count on the support of our entire brotherhood as we strive to reach this ambitious target.

We would be remiss if we didn’t thank a few individuals who have played a critical part in the current success of our Brotherhood. Brother Hunter Bond, Delta Theta 2021, and Brother Patrick Sheddy, Iota Delta 2022, have completed their terms on the Grand Council. We are extremely thankful for their commitment and passion to the advancement of our Brotherhood.

We would also like to extend our sincerest gratitude to Brother Francis Nolan, Kappa Delta 1990, who completed his term as Chairman of the Chi Phi Educational Trust this summer. Brother Nolan played a critical role in moving the Trust forward, and we are forever grateful. We are also excited that Brother Nolan has agreed to return to the Educational Trust as a Trustee and will continue to dedicate his time in support of our Brotherhood.

As we look to the future, we see a rejuvenated Brotherhood, inspired by the opportunity for growth and progress. We can see more exciting milestones and achievements on the horizon, most notably our Bicentennial Celebration. While there is much work to be done as we approach this momentous occasion, we should take some time to celebrate our current success.

Fraternally, Steven W. Hopkins, Nu 1999 Grand Alpha Robert A. Ramin, Xi 1982, Iota Zeta 1987 Educational Trust Chairman

I have had the pleasure of attending the last twenty-two Congresses, and I can say, without a doubt, that Congress is my favorite event on the annual Chi Phi calendar. It is where undergraduate and Alumni voting delegates come together to engage in the important legislative business of the Fraternity.

In July, Brothers gathered for the 156th Chi Phi Congress at the historic Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia. The delegates voted on many important matters, including a budget that prioritizes growth and expansion, and the creation of a new accreditation award to honor the legacy of Tom Deans, Phi Lambda Theta 1955. It was an honor that the delegates elected me to a second two-year term as your Grand Alpha. I look forward to working with the Grand Council, the Chi Phi Educational Trust and the National Office to continue striving to make Chi Phi both the oldest and the best men’s social fraternity. In addition to the business of the Fraternity, Congress also involved a variety of fun social events. Chi Phi is, after all, a social Fraternity! These events included the Phillies/ Cubs baseball game on Friday night and a walking tour of Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. The festivities culminated in the Saturday night awards banquet where we celebrated the achievements of our undergraduates, Alumni and Chapters.

D I S COVERTHE BROTHERLY L O EV 156THCONGRESS

PHILADELPHIA

This past Congress was also the one-year anniversary of my initial election as Grand Alpha. Over the last year, your Grand Council made good on the promise to get Chi Phi back out on the road to interact with our undergraduates and Alumni. To that end, we held our fall 2021 Grand Council meeting in Boston at the Beta Chapter house. We held our spring 2022 Grand Council meeting in Charlotte, NC. Both meetings involved undergraduatefocused events on Friday night and Alumni-focused events on Saturday night.

If you have never attended a Congress before, I highly recommend that all Brothers do. The 157th Chi Phi Congress will take place in July 2023, in Fort Worth, Texas (more information on that in early 2023).

In closing, it is an indescribable honor to serve as Chi Phi’s Grand Alpha as we approach our 200th anniversary in 2024. Chi Phi will be the first men’s social fraternity to reach 200.

However, I ask you to remember that 200 years is not a finish line. Rather, it is a starting point for Chi Phi to show the world what a vibrant, values-based social fraternity looks like going into its third century of existence.

I believe with every ounce of my being that the Chi Phi Fraternity’s best days lay ahead. And I firmly believe that society needs what we do now more than ever. And, what do we do? We Build Better Men. God willing, may Chi Phi continue to do so for another 200 years, and beyond.

Past Chairman, Fran Nolan, Kappa Delta 1990, had the opportunity at this year’s Congressional Banquet to honor three Alumni Brothers with the Chairman’s Service Award. The award is presented annually by the Chairman of the Chi Phi Educational Trust and recognizes individuals’ exemplary effort, energy, and dedication to the Educational Trust as well as Brothers who are making significant contributions in both time and treasure.

This year, the Educational Trust honored the following individuals: Dan Coutcher, Alpha-Chi 2016, Douglas Howie, Mu 1983, & Sean Murphy, Lambda Theta 2008.

Brother Coutcher, Alpha-Chi 2016, played a critical role in the success of the Educational Trust during his time on the National Office Staff. He assisted with the back-end operations of the Trust’s scholarship program and the Scarlet & Blue Brotherhood Emergency Fund. After leaving staff, Brother Coutcher joined the Board of Advisors where he continues to play a critical role. Brother Coutcher is always quick to volunteer with projects and never hesitates to assist with the Chakett or with outreach to donors.

Brother Howie, Mu 1983, is a long-standing member of the Educational Trust’s scholarship committee. He has spent countless hours reviewing hundreds of scholarship applications ensuring that the most deserving Chi Phi Brothers are rewarded for their efforts. Brother Howie’s passion for scholarships goes beyond reviewing applications. He is always helping the Educational Trust with social media marketing, joining subcommittees that move the entire program forward, as well as encouraging both Alumni and undergraduates to apply. Additionally, Brother Howie is an active member of the Mu Alumni Association and assists in educating Brothers on the work of the Educational Trust on a daily basis.

Brother Murphy, Lambda Theta 2008, is also a long-time member of the Educational Trust’s scholarship committee. Since joining the committee, he has reviewed scholarship applications as well as helped the Trust recruit numerous new committee members. More recently, Brother Murphy became a member of the Board of Advisors. Despite being new to the role, he has already helped connect the Trust to not only members of the Lambda Theta Chapter but also the Boston Chi Phi Club. And, as Brother Murphy is never one to miss a lively social event, it comes as no surprise that he was instrumental in partnering with the Trust to plan a Founders Day party in Boston this past year. Thankfully, he is reprising this partnership again, and we are looking forward to an even greater event in the Boston area this December.

We are truly honored to partner with these outstanding Alumni, and we offer our heartfelt gratitude to these volunteers for their relentless dedication and unwavering support. Please join the Chi Phi Educational Trust in congratulating and thanking these Brothers for their tremendous contributions to the Brotherhood.

11TH ANNUAL WATTS GUNN MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

We learned last year playing in Las Vegas that extreme temperatures wouldn’t be a deterrent to our loyal golfers, and this year’s tournament proved to be no different. With a heat index of well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, ten dedicated golfers braved the heatwave pounding the northeast and participated in the 11th Annual Watts Gunn Memorial Tournament at the Union League at Liberty Hill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Our golfers enjoyed a light breakfast, time on the putting green, as well as some Brotherhood bonding prior to teeing off at 9:08 a.m. And, whereas temperatures were in the low 90’s at this point, all began with a smile on their face eager to see who would be this year’s winning team. However, as the tournament commenced, it quickly became clear why this course is not only considered one of the most prestigious courses in the Philadelphia area, but also why it had been voted the #1 City Club in the Country for five years. This 18-hole Gary Player designed golf course presented our players with its fair share of challenging and unique holes, scenic views, as well as an impressive clubhouse.

Yet, as with every tournament—one team must emerge victorious. And, this year we are proud to announce that the winners of the 2022 Watts Gunn Memorial Golf Tournament were Jay Crosby, Psi 2000, Greg Dvorocsik, Psi 2000, and Peter Kyriakodis. Taking home the award for the longest drive was Brother Todd Ewan, Gamma 1990, while Brothers Mike Dever, Eta 1978, and Dan Ahearn, Theta Delta 1999, tied for the honor of the closest to the pin shot.

The comradery and shenanigans displayed on the golf course were certainly enjoyable (and rather entertaining); yet, the highlight of the day was the gathering of players and esteemed donors of the Educational Trust at the Leadership Reception that evening. Convening at The Union League of Philadelphia, supporters of the Educational Trust reunited to celebrate the growth and success of this past year along with the hope and appreciation for the leadership and educational programming that will be available to all Brothers in the upcoming 2022-2023 academic year.

The Educational Trust wants to offer its heartfelt gratitude to all our donors, especially our Watts Gunn Sponsors: Maclean Solutions and Suero Oral. We are deeply appreciative of your donation and continued support of the Watts Gunn Memorial Tournament. If you are interested in learning more about either of our sponsors and/or initiatives the Educational Trust is proud to support, we encourage you to reach out to educationaltrust@chiphi.org.

The Chi Phi Chakett Fall 2022 6

At the Chi Phi Educational Trust’s Congressional meeting held on July 22, 2022, the Board of Trustees elected its Executive Council Leadership for 2022-2024 term. This moment was both exciting and bittersweet as it also marked the conclusion of two years under the watchful eye of Brother Fran Nolan, Kappa Delta 1990. Through Brother Nolan’s guidance, the Educational Trust has seen immense growth in our Founders Day campaign, stronger bonds with Fraternity leadership and volunteers, and greater awareness of the importance and impact the Educational Trust has on all members of Chi Phi. We offer our heartfelt gratitude to Brother Nolan for his unwavering commitment to the Educational Trust, and we are genuinely grateful he has agreed to remain involved as a Trustee for the foreseeable future.

Stepping into the role as Chairman and guiding the Educational Trust into our milestone Bicentennial year is Brother Robert “Bob” Ramin, Xi 1982, Iota Zeta 1987. After serving multiple years on the Board of Trustees, Brother Ramin is coming into the position with a clear vision for the future: to help Brothers, both active and Alumni, truly to understand the value and importance of the educational programming offered at the national level and the instrumental supporting role of the Educational Trust.

Brother Ramin’s Greek journey began in 1980 when he made the life changing decision to join Chi Phi and immediately accept the role as President of his New Member class. Throughout the next two years of his undergraduate career, he held multiple leadership roles within the Chapter, which all garnered him leadership, management, and interpersonal skills.

As he reflected on his time as an undergraduate in the organization, he came to realize his passion, admiration, and respect for Greek life. It is the one organization that has the unique ability to foster an environment of support, a “home away from home” if you will, while living in a highly pressurized situation. And, although Brother Ramin notes that he did not see the importance or even connection to the organization at the national level at the time, he now implicitly understands its relevance.

Helping to develop that understanding is over forty years of experience volunteering on the Educational Trust’s Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors as well as the Craigielea (Xi Chapter) House Board, all while building and sustaining a successful career in fundraising for various non-profit organizations across the country.

As Chi Phi heads into its Bicentennial year with the hopes of thriving for another two hundred years, Brother Ramin states several imperatives: the Fraternity must continue to grow and attain talented staff, design and adapt curriculum to be relevant and effective to the challenges being faced by our Chapters, and quite simply, “consistently keep doing better.” One way to ensure that these priorities are met is through funding and support by the Educational Trust. His priority is to connect with as many Brothers as possible and share this message. He wants all Chi Phi Brothers to understand the importance of the Educational Trust’s role in supporting the Brotherhood’s mission of “Building Better Men” and the impact a donation to the Educational Trust can have in furthering the mission.

The Chi Phi Chakett Fall 2022 7

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

2022 Scholarship Recipients

Please join the Educational Trust in congratulating our 2022 scholarship recipients.

This year seventy-four (74) outstanding scholars and leaders were awarded a merit based, academic scholarship. Ranging between $1,000 - $3,000, these scholarships were designed to support Brothers with educational expenses (e.g. tuition, textbooks, lab equipment, etc.) so they can continue pursuing their academic and professional endeavors. This year our program saw over a 70% increase in applications with undergraduate and graduate Brothers across the country vying for one of these highly competitive scholarships.

Every year the Scholarship Review Committee is presented with a rather impressive pool of applications, and this year was certainly no exception. As our Chapters are re-engaging and re-energizing post pandemic, it is clear these recipients have a passion for not only their chosen fields of study but also their campuses and communities. These Brothers are highly engaged within their Chapters (serving on both the Executive Council and various committees) as well as being actively involved with other organizations on campus (ranging from theater, acapella, and marching band to academic mentors, leadership ambassadors, and student government). However, equally as impressive is that the majority of recipients have dedicated countless hours to various volunteer organizations (such as RAINN, Boys and Girls Club, Max Gruver Foundation, Meals on Wheels, and Habitat for Humanity) all while working either full or part time jobs throughout the academic year. There is no shortage of talent, ambition, or dedication amongst this year’s list of recipients.

Our scholarship program would not be possible without the dedication and loyalty of our donors. It is through the continued generosity of Brothers, Parents, and Friends of Chi Phi that we are able to award an astounding $96,700 this year in scholarships to our aspiring leaders. Our donors’ commitment to this program and the Educational Trust helps us to build generations of Brothers who lead on campus and in our global society as men of values, men of principles, and Men of Virtue.

The Chi Phi Educational Trust, Board of Trustees, Scholarship Review Committee, and Staff take pride in recognizing the following Brothers who have exemplified academic excellence and authentic leadership within their Chapter, campus, and community:

2022 SPARKS MEMORIAL MEDAL RECIPIENTS

The Chi Phi Educational Trust is proud to introduce our 2022 Sparks Memorial Medal recipients! First awarded in 1925, the Sparks Memorial Medial is named for Edwin Erle Sparks, Alpha-Chi 1884, Iota 1884, and is the Chi Phi Educational Trust’s oldest honor. It is given every year to the man with the highest academic standing in each Chapter.

The Sparks Medal is a truly unique Chi Phi relic, incorporating representation from each of our three Founding Orders. The ribbon of scarlet and blue is symbolic of the ribbons affixed to charters issued by the Hobart Order. The medal itself is an embossed replica of the Princeton Order badge and bears the swords and stars emblematic of the Southern Order.

Join us in congratulating these fine young men on their achievement!

CHI PHI IS NOT FOUR YEARS, BUT FOREVER…

Whether you have graduated from college and are breaking into the professional world, relocated to a new city or just looking to meet some Brothers, engaging with fellow Chi Phi Alumni is for you! Being a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity is a lifetime experience and Alumni organizations play a central role in helping Brothers renew old friendships, make new acquaintances, attend to the business of the Fraternity, and learn what is happening within Chi Phi.

Where do you even start?

How do you find a group?

What if you are not located near your university or there is no City Club in your area?

We are here to answer all your questions and more!

CHI PHI CITY CLUBS HELP:

Provide Alumni with the opportunity to build your network

Provide fun social activities with Brothers

Offer opportunities for leadership

Encourage philanthropic endeavors

Provide assistance to local Chi Phi Chapters & Associate Chapters

Engage Alumni with National Chi Phi leaders and volunteers

Currently, the Chi Phi Fraternity and the Chi Phi Educational Trust are collaborating together to help Alumni support, create or revitalize Chi Phi City Clubs.

Plans are currently underway for City Clubs in Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Chicago; however, we are looking to create additional City Clubs across the country.

NO CITY CLUB IN YOUR AREA? CONSIDER ORGANIZING ONE.

5 STEPS TO CREATE A CITY CLUB IN YOUR AREA

STEP ONE: CONTACT NATIONAL OFFICE

Email or call the National Office at alumni@chiphi.org or 404-231-1824 to express your interest. The National Office will help you assess the interest for a City Club in your area using an electronic survey sent out by the Chi Phi Fraternity.

STEP

TWO: MEET WITH A SMALL GROUP OF INTERESTED ALUMNI

The National Office will help you contact other Alumni who are interested in serving as leaders to develop a City Club. This group of Alumni can help you plan the kick-off event and often will help serve as officers of the City Club.

STEP THREE: HOST A KICK-OFF

EVENT/MEETING

Work with staff at the the National Office to send an invitation to all local Alumni. Use the small group of Alumni from the previous meeting, to make personal phone calls and send personal email invitations as well.

STEP

FOUR: DEVELOP CITY CLUB BY-LAWS

Using a sample by-laws provided by the National Office as a guide, the officers will need to determine the City Club’s by-laws. Most often, City Clubs decide to adopt the sample bylaws with a few slight adjustments

STEP FIVE: APPLY FOR A CITY CLUB CHARTER

Once the officers have been elected and the formally adopted its by-laws, and elected its officers, it is ready to apply for its City Club charter from the Grand Council. This formal recognition will allow the City Club to send one voting member to the Fraternity’s Congress and receive continued assistance from the National Office. City Clubs that reach this stage most often have a vibrant membership base and regular activities.

Honoring the Entrepreneurial Spirit of Doug Gibson

In honor of a Brother whose life was cut entirely too short, a close group of Delta Theta Brothers and friends joined forces earlier this year to establish a foundation and scholarship endowment in his name. Brother Doug Gibson, Delta Theta 2005, was always known for his “we can do it” mentality, an entrepreneurial attitude this foundation seeks to honor and celebrate.

Players, Sponsors, & Volunteers of the 2022 Doug Gibson Memorial Golf Tournament

Brother Gibson was born on July 3, 1981 to Dennis and Joyce Gibson in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shortly thereafter, the Gibson family moved to Ohio before settling down in Georgia. In 2000, when it was time for Doug to decide where he would attend college, he selected Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.

During this time, the Chi Phi Fraternity was establishing a brand new Associate Chapter at Clemson. Timing could not have been better for Doug. In the spring of 2003, Doug’s junior year, he accepted a bid to join Delta Theta’s second New Member class and became an official Charter Member that April. While on campus, Brother Gibson made an immediate impact. He had an infectious positive attitude and a ‘we can do it’ life motto that was felt from anyone that had an opportunity to meet and interact with him.

Upon graduation, Doug joined the family business as General Manager of Heritage Charity Auction and Awards in Cumming, Georgia. On January 5, 2014, while on a work trip in Orlando, Doug and his brother Mark

were involved in a fatal automobile accident. The loss of Doug and Mark has been devastating and has left a void in the lives of all those that knew them. In honor of Doug’s 40th birthday, his friends, family, and fellow Chi Phi Brothers wanted to create a lasting legacy on Clemson’s campus and within the Delta Theta Chapter so that his motivational spirit would live on forever.

In early 2021, this dedicated group of individuals turned their aspirations into a reality by establishing the Doug Gibson Scholarship Foundation. Later that year the foundation’s president, Brother Kirk Thomas, Delta Theta 2005, engaged the Chi Phi Educational Trust to coordinate the management and distribution of funds. In January of 2022, the Scholarship Foundation and the Educational Trust officially established the Doug Gibson Memorial Endowment, a fund that will provide scholarships and other educational awards to Delta Theta Chapter Brothers as well as Clemson University undergraduate students.

On April 15, 2022, the foundation hosted the first annual Doug Gibson

Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the scholarship endowment. Tournament director Brother Josh Ogulewicz, Delta Theta 2005, coordinated all details of the tournament. Brother Ogulewicz was able to secure the famous Walker Course at Clemson where seventy-two players participated in a shotgun start tournament. Participants included Doug’s family, childhood and college friends, as well as numerous Delta Theta Brothers. Recognition was given to the top three teams along with those individuals who had the longest drive and were closest to the pin. All players were treated with gifts provided by Heritage Charity Auction and Awards.

In addition to the money raised from participants, the tournament was fortunate to have a multitude of additional sponsors and donors. A silent auction was held where individuals had a chance to win items ranging from Clemson paraphernalia to seven-day vacations. Branded items were also available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the scholarship endowment.

The Chi Phi Chakett Fall 2022 24

When the final numbers were tallied, over $42,000 was raised, exceeding all expectations. Brother Kirk Thomas recognized the important role Brother Gibson’s family played in helping the foundation surpass its goals. “Much of the success of the tournament goes to Dennis and Joyce Gibson, as well as the entire team at Heritage Charity Auction and Awards, for their generosity to make this tournament better than we could have envisioned.”

Doug’s spirit was a constant presence at the tournament and could be felt throughout the entire weekend. From golf cart to golf cart, stories about Doug could be heard, happy memories prompting lots of smiles and laughter. Educational Trust Executive Director Laura Landry, who was present throughout the weekend said, “While I never had the opportunity to meet Doug, I can clearly see the impact he left on this world through his friends, family, and Delta Theta Brothers, who all represented him throughout the weekend.”

Save the date for the 2nd Annual Doug Gibson Memorial Golf Tournament– Saturday, April 15, 2023 The tournament will return to the Walker Course. During the weekend the scholarship foundation will hand out the first two scholarships from the endowment. We hope to see many of you in Tigertown in April. Please contact dhgtourney@gmail.com with questions about the Doug Gibson Memorial Golf Tournament. If you would like to participate or donate to the Doug Gibson Scholarship Endowment, scan the QR code!

“It is such an overwhelming feeling to have one of our wonderful sons recognized in this way. To witness the character and talents of the professionals that took time from their families and jobs to dedicate themselves for this cause means a great deal to us. There’s really no way we can adequately express our heartfelt appreciation to every sponsor, donor, player, and board member.”

The Educational Trust is honored to work with the Doug Gibson Foundation on establishing this endowment. If the first annual golf tournament is any indication of what Doug’s friends and family are capable of, the future for this scholarship is bright.

There is no question, our friend and Brother Doug would be proud.
