ALPHA ZETA CHAPTER TURNS 50!
In a weekend-long celebration, five decades of Alpha Zeta Brothers gathered back in Carrollton, Georgia, to celebrate fifty years of Chi Phi Brotherhood at the University of West Georgia. The weekend of April 21-23 was spent reconnecting, celebrating, golfing, and fundraising for the Alpha Zeta Chapter Excellence Fund.
The festivities kicked off with the 25th Annual Chi Phi Excellence Fund Golf Tournament at the Fairfield Plantation Golf Club. The tournament was sponsored by forty-three corporate partners, and the tee sheet was set with 136 golfers. Proceeds from the golf tournament benefited the Alpha Zeta Chapter Excellence Fund hosted within the Chi Phi Educational Trust. With over $42,000 raised, there is no doubt this event was a true success.
Following the tournament, Brothers gathered at the Chapter House for the annual welcome back party. The celebration included a BBQ dinner by Birddawg BBQ, a live auction, and a performance by the 70’s and 80’s band, Double Take. While there was certainly no shortage of
laughter and dancing throughout the evening, it was a heartwarming site to watch multiple generations of Brothers reflect on the challenges and triumphs of fifty years of Brotherhood.
The following afternoon Alumni, Undergraduate Brothers, and Friends/ Family of the Chapter gathered at the Sunset Hills Country Club for the 50th Annual Awards Banquet. Awards were given for various Chapter accomplishments over the year. Included in the awards banquet was a scholarship awarded to Matthew Meersman, Alpha Zeta 2025, for having the Chapter’s highest GPA.
In conjunction with the multiple events held throughout the weekend, Brothers had the opportunity to purchase custom made apparel in honor of the celebration as well as throwback gear of shirts from over the ages. Additionally, in honor of this historic event, the Alpha Zeta Housing Association partnered to release a special edition Bourbon which was branded with the anniversary logo and hand dipped in scarlet and blue wax– a priceless memento to commemorate an impressive accomplishment.

CONGRATULATIONS, ALPHA ZETA, ON 50 YEARS OF CHI PHI BROTHERHOOD. HERE’S TO MANY MORE!
Ninety Chi Phi Brothers joined facilitators, staff, Grand Council members, and Educational Trust Board of Trustees in Atlanta, Georgia, the weekend of January 6 -8, 2023, for the annual Alphas and Thetas Academy. This premier leadership development program is designed to provide targeted training and resources to two of our most influential leaders in the Chapter: Presidents and New Member Educators.
In advance of the weekend, Brothers were asked to participate in a CliftonStrengths assessment. This tool measures thirty-four (34) researchvalidated talent themes which allow our Chapter leaders to build upon their natural strengths while also empowering them to make meaningful contributions to both their Chapter and communities.
Joining the program as a keynote speaker was Austin Suellentrop, Mu Delta 2006, who serves as a CliftonStrengths Portfolio Manager. Brother Suellentrop was able to provide specific information to Brothers about their individual strengths. In particular, he focused on how to utilize strengths to develop future leaders within the Chapter, how to mitigate conflict, and how to cultivate healthy communication skills. Throughout the weekend, Brothers were able to apply this knowledge in both large and small group settings as they discussed challenges facing Chi Phi today.
Brothers were also invited to participate in the annual Chairman’s Dinner, which is hosted by the Educational Trust. This year’s dinner was held at the Capital City Club, and Brothers had the opportunity to listen to a keynote from Grand Eta, John Christian, Lambda 1980. Brother Christian emphasized the importance of leadership and Brotherhood in his powerful message.
Over the course of the weekend, Brothers had the opportunity to connect with other Chapters, learn from each other, and were given the tools to return home and empower their Chapter to succeed. However, the program would not have been possible without the excellent facilitators who supported the small group work. These volunteers gave up their weekend to spend time Building Better Men, and for that we are grateful.

Five years ago, seven families faced the unimaginable. While their sons were away at college, attending classes, developing friendships, and creating memories, the young men made the decision to join a fraternity; a decision that would ultimately lead to their untimely deaths as a direct result of fraternity hazing.
One of these men, Max Gruver, died on September 14, 2017, while a new member of a fraternity at Louisiana State University. Since his death, his parents, Rae Ann and Stephen Gruver, have created the Max Gruver Foundation,a non-profit organization working to end hazing on college campuses. In the United States, at least one person has died from hazing each year since 1961. For the fraternity and sorority experience on college campuses to continue, the Max Gruver Foundation stands firmly on the belief that hazing needs to END. Universities react to these dangerous and too-often deadly hazing situations with Greek life suspensions, expulsions, and other punishments, but it is not enough. Through raising awareness regarding the effects of hazing, every action of the Foundation is to challenge college campuses, Greek organizations, their members, and the United States government to take a stance against hazing in order to save lives.
To raise money for the Foundation, in 2019, the Gruvers’ created the Fly High Max 5K. The race, held at Max’s beloved high school, Blessed Trinity Catholic High School, has welcomed hundreds of runners each year to demonstrate their commitment to Max, his family, and to ensure they have the resources to continue to spread Max’s story and fight against hazing of any kind.
Since the creation of the Fly High Max 5K, the Chi Phi Fraternity has been a proud Corporate Level sponsor.
Over the last several years, students and staff have attended the race, secured medals for their accomplishments in their age groups, and promoted our commitment to the messaging on the need to eradicate hazing.
Most recently, for the 2023 Fly High Max 5K, the Fraternity was proud to become one of the first organizations to collaborate with the Foundation to host a virtual 5K outside of the Atlanta race. On Saturday, March 4, in conjunction with the race and our upcoming return to the Zeta Chapter, the Fraternity partnered with Franklin and Marshall College students, faculty, staff, and Chi Phi Alumni to have almost thirty individuals participate in the race concurrently with the event in Atlanta. With the success of our race at Franklin and Marshall, the Fraternity is looking forward to creating more virtual locations in 2024.
With plans underway for the 2024 Fly High Max 5K, the Fraternity will be challenging our Chapters to participate in this amazing cause by attending the race in Atlanta or hosting their own race in conjunction on their campus. If you are reading this article and are wondering how your Chapter, Alumni Association, City Club, or just you and a few Brothers and friends can participate in hosting a race location, please contact Dr. Barbre Berris, Associate Executive Director, at berris@chiphi.org. The Chi Phi Fraternity is based on the values of Truth, Honor, and Personal Integrity while Building Better Men across the country. Let’s showcase those values while demonstrating our commitment to stop hazing of any kind by participating in this amazing cause.

Brother Azarian’s long tenure in service of Chi Phi is a testament to his earnest belief in the truly essential place that values-based organizations like ours play in society. Through good times and bad, Brother Azarian has held fast to that belief in Chi Phi and tried to see those values and the organization’s value to society writ large put into practice, and we are a better Brotherhood for it.

Brother Michael Azarian has proven to be a friend, a leader, and a great Brother over our friendship! There are too many stories to tell, events attended, miles traveled, and late night phone calls to fully describe his dedication to friendship and making the Chi Phi Fraternity the best it could be . Thank you, Michael, for your dedication to our Fraternity.
The year is 1997: A gallon of gas costs around 98 cents, Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls are at the height of their power, and the Spice Girls top the music charts. And, in that same year, Michael Azarian began working for Chi Phi as a Chapter Leadership Consultant.

What can I say about Mike Azarian? Well, when it comes to the future of Chi Phi, I am very grateful to know that my big brother is at the helm of our Fraternity. Mike continuously exemplifies what it means to live the Chi Phi Creed.. Congratulations Big Bro...and, of course, Let’s Go Mets!
In the intervening twenty-five years, Brother Azarian rose – through his dedication and perseverance – to become Chi Phi’s Executive Director. Over his quarter century of service, Brother Azarian has touched the lives of thousands of undergraduate and Alumni Brothers. As Chi Phi is now on the cusp of becoming the first men’s social fraternity to turn 200, our Brotherhood owes a debt of gratitude to Brother Azarian for all he has done to guide the Fraternity to this historic point in time.
The Chi Phi Fraternity, and society at large, have experienced countless challenges and changes since 1997. Brother Azarian has been a constant in this ever-changing world, and has provided a steady hand during challenging times, as well as an inspirational voice to call on our Brotherhood to live up to its ideals and be not only the oldest men’s social fraternity, but the best.

I’m one of the few people that remembers when Michael first started working for the Fraternity. Michael was then a wide eyed, sometimes brash, energetic, field consultant. Some things do not change, but Michael’s twenty-five years of service to the Fraternity speaks volumes about his energy, dedication, and devotion for the Fraternity. I am thrilled that I got to be part of his journey.

The last quarter century has been no easy challenge for the continued relevance of Greek Life. It takes an exceptional leader to successfully guide and manage a men’s college social fraternity. As our Executive Director, Michael Azarian has been that leader and more. Michael is a true gentleman and consummate professional. Congratulations on 25 years and counting!

Michael has been a pillar for Chi Phi and a great friend for more than two decades. He is one of our Fraternity’s most dedicated, longstanding leaders and has done more to grow and improve the organization than anyone else. Since I joined the Grand Council in 2015, I gleaned a broad insight on the state of ritual in the Fraternity across the country. Coming from a 150-year-old chapter, we practiced ritual with great care. I naively assumed this would be a common denominator across all chapters. I quickly realized that my experience seemed to be uncommon. I realized there was widespread apathy. Our chapters were checking a box and felt burdened by the time it took to complete the required ceremonies. This attitude, perhaps, could be attributed to a lack of understanding of the meaning behind our long-standing tradition of performing ritual and a deficit of available resources. Ritual was not being talked about enough or prioritized. Ultimately, it was viewed as a topic of lesser importance.
Upon this realization, I made it my mission to find others that shared my same sentiments for ritual. I soon learned that I was not the only one; there were many of us. I made ritual my focus and strategized how we could begin to reverse the trend of apathy. While we have made many changes over the years to strengthen ritual awareness, the most important and impactful decision has been to create a national program dedicated to this topic: the Regional Ritual Retreat (RRR).
The concept was to assemble a team of Brothers passionate and knowledgeable about all things relative to ritual and enlighten undergraduates and alumni. We believe in the holistic power of ritual and the impact it has on membership and the Chi Phi experience. Ritual defines who we are as Chi Phis and is the one constant that remains steady through our nearly two hundred years of adaptation to cultural shifts. The breadth of our ritual is what makes us not just a group of friends identified by the same letters, but a group of Brothers espousing a uniform set of values, promises, and traditions. To live the Chi Phi experience, connecting with the true meaning of Brotherhood is an essential part of our journey. The goal of the RRR program is to help Brothers feel this connection.
The RRR is an immersive program, free of charge, that occurs over the summer. The program first began in 2017, and while we took a hiatus during COVID, we are once again offering two opportunities this summer
at Lehigh and the University of Florida. The curriculum of the program will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of our history and ritual; one that we hope will invigorate you to go back to your chapters and alumni and spread your excitement. During the program, you can expect the following:
The performance of every Chi Phi ceremony, during which we stop to explain important moments, symbolic references, and answer questions.
• A discussion of all our secrets that are embedded in the Unwritten Law.
• An explanation of how to properly set up a ritual space and the associated decorum.
• An in-depth history of not only the fraternity’s founding, but also associated symbols and objects.
• An explanation of all our ritual equipment and how it is used.
• A discussion on how to perform ritual in different housing and space scenarios (chapter house vs. no chapter house)
• The relevance of ritual today and how to apply the meaning in our chapter operations and day-to-day life.
I hope you take advantage of this unique opportunity to understand what Brotherhood really means and attend the RRR. It is an opportunity to spend a weekend with Brothers from other Chapters and realign yourselves with the foundation of our organization. The experience I had as an undergraduate transformed me, and as an alumnus, as I continued to learn more about our storied past, my emotional connection to Chi Phi only grows stronger. See you at the RRR!

Adapting to a changing world, and spurred on by extraordinary events, the Fraternity and Educational Trust have moved their respective offices to a fully virtual working environment.
“We’ve been headed in this direction for a while now,” said Michael Azarian, Psi Delta 1997, the Fraternity’s Executive Director. “Our staff members spend significant time on the road visiting Chapters, and we’ve been paperless for a long time. Then, during the pandemic, no one was going in to the physical office space, but we made changes to ensure we were still able to maintain our level of responsiveness to our Brothers. We’re going to continue to provide direct support to our Brothers while saving significant money by moving to a virtual office structure.”
The Fraternity’s progression towards fully remote operations was accelerated in December 2022, when a historic cold snap caused the sprinkler system in the Fraternity’s physical headquarters in Suwanee, Georgia, to burst. The resulting flood caused catastrophic damage throughout the building, disrupting the operations of the Fraternity and the Educational Trust as well as the building’s other tenants.
“Thankfully, prior to the flooding we’d moved the Fraternity’s historical records offsite in preparation for our upcoming archiving project,” Azarian noted.
Laura Landry, the Executive Director of the Educational Trust, says that repairs to the building are ongoing, and while the future occupancy of the building remains unclear, one thing is certain: the mission of both the Fraternity and the Educational Trust continues without interruption.
“The Fraternity and the Educational Trust have been working together more closely than ever,” said Landry. “Even though we’re physically spread out, we’re talking all the time, and we’re locked in on our primary goal.”
