OUR VISION Chinquapin Prep

Through a rigorous curriculum and an emphasis on community service and earning what one receives, we aim to produce responsible, well-educated citizens who will become constructive leaders in their communities.

A B O UT C H IN Q UA P IN The Chinquapin School was founded in 1969 by Robert Moore, a former head of the English Department at St. John’s School, and his wife Maxine. With the help of a grant from The Brown Foundation, Inc., the Moores saw the need to provide an incentive for students with high potential but limited opportunities. In 2010, our organization officially changed its name to Chinquapin Preparatory School to better reflect its mission. Chinquapin Prep is a nonprofit collegepreparatory school for grades six through twelve, primarily serving highly motivated youth from Houston’s under-resourced communities and schools by providing a better future through education.

P HOTO

Chinquapin Prep’s motto is Quid Pro Quo and is lived daily as students give time and effort to the school for the opportunity to receive a quality education in a caring, family-oriented environment. Since 1969, Chinquapin has graduated more than 650 students who have gone on to become leaders in their communities.

Annual Report

Chinquapin faced unprecedented obstacles head-on in the last few years, from the pandemic to social and emotional shifts. Through unwavering determination and adaptability, our teachers, support staff, parents, and students overcame these obstacles and emerged stronger, more connected, and better prepared for the future. Let us embrace that future with optimism, determination, and an unwavering spirit. Together, we will continue to inspire, educate, and empower our students to become tomorrow’s leaders. ~ Marcella Watkins, President, Chinquapin Board of Trustees 2021–2023 03

2022 – 2023 YEAR IN REVIEW Chinquapin Prep

Chinquapin is committed to providing our ambitious students with rigorous academics in a supportive environment. Every community member works toward our mission and gives back. This instills the values of hard work, a strong sense of family, and an investment in community that prepares students for long-term success. 06

ST UDE N T S P OTL IG H T started immediately boarding in 10th grade, appreciating the tranquil campus and community atmosphere the school provides. “We recognized Victor's potential, drive, and determination to succeed from the moment we met him. Victor convinced every faculty member that he belonged at Chinquapin despite his limited English language proficiency,” says then Admissions Director Aby Cisneros. Now School Administrator and teacher, Cisneros added, “As a 10th grader, at a new school, in a new country, with a new language, and at the height of the pandemic, Victor thrived academically and socially.”

Victor Toxqui’s unlikely story as a reluctant English-speaking 9th grader to the recipient of a full-ride academic scholarship to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, illustrates the power of Chinquapin’s supportive rigorous collegeprep community. Born in Houston, Victor returned to Mexico before moving back to live with his aunt in Texas for high school. Victor enrolled at his local public high school, where he found he wasn’t adequately challenged despite his considerable English language deficiency. “Honestly, I couldn’t speak a full sentence in English when I started high school,” says the now fluent English speaker. “I understood more than I could string together, so I was able to take in information quickly.”

“I never dreamed this would be a possibility for me when I was in middle school in Mexico. My mom always wanted the best for me and to provide the best education possible, which is why she sent me to Texas for high school. Getting to college was always a goal, but this opportunity at Wisconsin is beyond our wildest dreams,” said a very humble and hopeful Victor. Cisneros knows Victor’s tenacity and integrity will continue to serve him well. “It comes as no shock to our community that Victor achieved this goal and has been a chosen recipient of this incredible scholarship. And we do not doubt that, in a few years, we will witness him achieve yet another goal: college graduation.”

Annual Report

Victor’s aunt knew of Chinquapin, and she encouraged him to apply. Victor survived the admissions process, which includes a trial summer session, and

Victor discovered his gifted comprehension of the language of computer science and began researching universities with strong IT programs that could also offer sizable financial aid. He was accepted to most of the colleges to which he applied, but the financial aid packages weren’t enough to close the gap. That is until he received word from the University of Wisconsin that he earned a full-ride scholarship. He has been honored with a Mercile J. Lee Scholars Program (MJLSP) Scholarship, which covers tuition, room and board, and provides a stipend for books and living expenses. Victor will also benefit from individualized advising, a supportive peer network, leadership development, and mentorship opportunities.

AT H LE TIC S Chinquapin’s small size means that even students who might not usually participate in sports are encouraged and welcomed to pull on a jersey and give it their all…on the court, the field, or the track. Students gain confidence, demonstrate courage, and display physical strengths that enhance their academic performance and build camaraderie and school pride.

COM M UNI TY S ERVICE Chinquapin Burrs embody Quid Pro Quo by viewing themselves as critical components of the community. They show gratitude for their education by serving as Chinquapin Ambassadors and

Chinquapin Prep

participating in at least two annual community service projects.

ST UDE N T L EA D E RS H IP COM M I TTEE SLC is a student council composed of students elected from each class—usually two members from each grade from seventh grade and higher. SLC are exemplary students and Chinquapin cheerleaders extraordinaire! They plan student activities and contests throughout the year that foster community, friendly competition, and good clean fun!

PA RTNER ORGA N IZAT IO NS Chinquapin is stronger thanks to our partnerships with area organizations that help meet our students’ needs in various ways, including college application essays, SAT and ACT prep, academic tutoring, mentorships, internships, career planning and advice, Thanksgiving meals, making Houston’s rich cultural offerings in theater, music, and the arts more accessible, and broadening our students’ views of the world. We are grateful for our current community partners: Advantage Testing, Inc., Bowen, Miclette & Britt Insurance Agency, CareerSpring, Girls Inc., The Junior League of Houston, Inc., The Service League of Baytown, and The Woods Project. FUNDRAISING EVENTS Chinquapin Prep

Our fundraisers are critical to Chinquapin’s bottom line. These events bring people together to celebrate our accomplishments while ensuring Chinquapin continues to provide academic rigor in a supportive environment. These experiences have a lasting and transformative impact on our students.

12

C L AYS S H O OT Chinquapin hosted over 200 sharpshooters for our annual sporting clays tournament at the Greater Houston Sports Club. Platinum sponsor Energy Transfer set a high bar for the event. Gold sponsor Ryan Sauer & Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors strengthened the pack. Silver sponsors Americana Partners, Martha & Sam Bowen/Bowen, Miclette & Britt, Callon Petroleum, David de Roode & Lockton Global, EIV Capital, Mayer Brown LLP, and Marcella and Dan Watkins came in big. Thanks to their support and that of hundreds of others, we raised a record-breaking $160,000!

PLA NTI NG SEEDS FO R T HE FU T U RE Chinquapin's annual spring gala, Planting Seeds for the Future, was a resounding success, bringing together over 360 people in a packed room at the magnificent venue, The Revaire. The event celebrated community and philanthropy and honored the unwavering support of the Peterson family, steadfast champions of our mission. Co-chaired by Lindsay and Dan Pearce, and with the generous matching donation from the Macquarie Foundation, proceeds from this event topped more than $700,000, creating a ripple effect of impact, directly supporting Chinquapin. Investing in Chinquapin means our students continue to receive a high-quality education that sets them on a path to success. Annual Report

COMMUNITY EVENTS Chinquapin Prep

Chinquapin students take full advantage of our partnerships with generous supporters. These opportunities enhance their educational experiences and open doors, allowing them to see themselves in settings they may not have otherwise considered.

14

ME NTOR P RO G RA M We pair Chinquapin juniors and seniors with caring individuals who provide a perspective outside the school community, serve as a listening ear, and support our students as they navigate the college application process. This intergenerational partnership shows our students the benefits of networking and the importance of improving their social skills to prepare for college and the professional world. Mentor support is an invaluable asset to our school community.

C REATI V I TY WEEK Creativity Week provides extended time for faculty and students to explore strengths in areas other than academics and gives everyone the space to express (or discover) their talents! Students and faculty submitted, suggested, and voted on the week’s activities, which ultimately resulted in 18 classes, ranging from exploring Houston and horseback riding to welding and music production. As with all things Chinquapin, this effort required all hands on deck and the addition of some heavy-lifting volunteers, including Rob Christy and his team of welders, and the interactive sustainability collaboration with Neste Renewables.

Annual Report 15

CO L L EG E DAY Chinquapin takes college seriously. College Day 2023 drove home this point with nearly a dozen colleges represented - some even by Chinquapin alumni - sharing what life is like on these respective college campuses. Thanks to reps and Burr alumni from Baylor, Carleton College, Grad Café, Houston Christian University, Kenyon College, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, University of Houston, and UT Austin.

SUM M ER SESSI O N

Chinquapin Prep

We invite prospective students who successfully navigate our rigorous admissions process to spend four days on our campus, immersing themselves in the life of a Chinquapin student. During their visit, they attend classes, eat in our dining hall, engage in extracurricular activities, contribute to chore crews, and even complete homework assignments. After the week, our dedicated faculty, staff, and students evaluate each prospective student's academic, social, cultural, and emotional performance, assessing whether Chinquapin is the ideal match for them.

16

COR P O R ATE TO U R S Energy Transfer’s office tour and panel discussion with some of the company’s top executives gave students an appreciation for the varied career paths available to them. Frost Bank organized a corporate office tour, mock interviews, resume reviews, and a financial literacy presentation, which supplied our students with essential life skills.
