C H I N Q UA P I N ’ S M I S S I O N Our mission is to provide a high-quality college-preparatory education to able and motivated youth from under resourced communities and schools in the greater Houston area. Through a rigorous curriculum and an emphasis on community service and earning what one receives, we aim to produce responsible, well-educated citizens who will become constructive leaders in their communities. The mission continues to thrive because Chinquapin upholds the promise that our students are the leaders who will transform future generations.

ABOUT US The Chinquapin School was founded in 1969 by Robert Moore, a former head of the English Department at St. John’s School, and his wife Maxine, with the help of a grant from The Brown Foundation, Inc. The Moores saw the need to provide incentive for students who have high potential but limited opportunities. In 2010, our organization officially changed its name to Chinquapin Preparatory School, to better reflect its mission. “Quid pro Quo” (Something for Something) is Chinquapin Prep’s motto, and is lived daily as students give time and effort to the school in return for the opportunity to receive quality education in a caring, familyoriented environment. Today, more than 20 full-time teachers live on-campus to educate a student body of around 160. High school students live on campus Monday through Friday, while most sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are transported daily. Bob and Maxine Moore’s original vision is carried forth under the guidance of the Board of Trustees and the school’s executive director, Dr. Dorothy Scrutchin.

A L E T T E R F RO M O U R E X E C U T I V E D I R E C TO R As we dive into the next fifty years of Chinquapin, we recommit ourselves to transforming learners into leaders. Chinquapin’s new initiatives are all about the Cs: character, connection, community, collaboration, and communication. Providing equitable education ensures our students know they matter. Chinquapin’s history has had a profound community impact – because we teach the whole child. Every member of the Chinquapin community cherishes this extraordinary place. For us, that’s more than words, because we put actions behind what’s in our hearts. It is my aspiration as Executive Director to build an empathetic and socially-minded community engaged in crucial conversations about injustice, diversity, equity, and inclusivity. Committing to conversations about our priorities and initiatives has helped our community redirect focus. We challenge students to participate in these discussions with their community, to be bold and brave, and to dream big about social justice in the world. The biggest dreamers of all founded Chinquapin! Bob and Maxine Moore understood it’s not where you come from but where you’re going that matters. Chinquapin has been a special place that cultivates students to delve into their dreams by trusting Chinquapin to provide the foundation of a college preparatory education. Chinquapin honors the Moores by continuing to celebrate the richness of our community’s individuality and diverse perspectives and contributions. It’s true. Once you become a Chinquapinian, you will always be a Burr! Join our pledge as we commemorate our past and commit to be bold and brave for our future! Sincerely,

Dorothy Scrutchin, Ed. D.

W E S A L U T E C H I N Q UA P I N ’ S C L A S S O F 2 0 2 0 Chinquapin’s Class of 2020 experienced a spring semester quite unlike the past fifty that preceded it. Nevertheless, our seniors rocked it, securing spots at colleges throughout the nation, and earning more than $689,000 in scholarships for their freshman year alone!

COMMUNITY EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS 50th ANNIVERSARY GALA W H AT A C E L E B R AT I O N !

Chinquapin’s 50th anniversary gala in the spring of 2019 brought together over 400 passionate supporters (and dancers!) to applaud the school’s achievements. Chaired by Elizabeth Dudley and Natalie Synnott, the gala honored school founders Bob and Maxine Moore, as well as the original Board of Directors. We also recognized the reason for the school: specifically, the year’s twenty-two graduating seniors—all were accepted to college. The night’s capstone was a moving video of alumni, who shared the impact Chinquapin has had on their journeys.

TO B I A S W O L F F V I S I T Stanford University professor emeritus, Tobias Wolff, made quite a splash during his Houston stay and proved to be an approachable, witty guest. This award-winning American short story writer, memoirist, novelist, and teacher of creative writing toured campus before taking to the stage for a presentation on his writing process. His advice for aspiring writers was to be disciplined, to write every day. Back in Houston, after an evening cocktail reception in Rice University’s Woodson Courtyard, Wolff spoke on the memoir and its place in the world of literature to a crowd keen to soak in Wolff’s experiences and wisdom. We give great thanks to the small but mighty committee who made Wolff’s quick tour of the Bayou City a success!

FA M I LY FA I R DAY Friends, families, students, and alumni spent a fun day on campus enjoying food, games, campus tours and learned about our rich history by unearthing a time capsule that had been buried in 2009. Q U I D P RO Q U O DAY Chinquapin is proud of its quid pro quo motto and we all aim to put it into practice each day. This spring’s inaugural Quid Pro Quo Day saw more than 50 Chinquapin students, faculty, alumni, and supporters from the greater community come together to accomplish a great deal:

● Logging 210 hours of sweat equity

● Sanding and staining decking around the senior statue

● Power washing, edging, leaf blowing, painting the fire lane

● Deep cleaning multiple classrooms’ desks, floors, walls and organizing closets and

power washing outside, sweeping & mopping

● Emptying out an old storage shed

● Deep cleaning, degreasing, tile cleaning the kitchen

● Shampooing carpets, deep cleaning, bathroom showers, stalls & floor tiles in multiple dorms

● General landscaping, including weeding and mulching, mowing, edging, cutting tree limbs & shaping shrubs

● Deep cleaning and organizing, sweeping & mopping throughout the gym/weight room

● Organizing, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping the office

Since our founding in 1969, Chinquapin has relied on our community to power our campus. Our spring Quid Pro Quo Day 2020 was a shining example of people working together to give back.

C R E AT I V I T Y W E E K Be Bold! The planning team for Creativity Week 2020 challenged teachers and students to dream big and tackle new ideas — the groups delivered! One group transformed an abandoned tire structure into a home for bunnies and a local food garden, and another remodeled all the bathrooms in the science building. Money Think focused on making responsible financial decisions; Good Eats was all about how to cook on a budget; a woodworking group learned how to carve beautiful objects. Through field trips students connected their projects to the real world. Etiquette students took a manners course and ballroom dance lessons; Explore Houston Burrs traveled all over our vast city, from an architecture class at UH to the Houston Zoo. As well, nearly every class hosted guest speakers on campus: We had talks by chefs for the cooking class, and Chinquapin alumna, Shiarnice Taylor, a published author, spoke to the creative writing group. Showcase rounded out the week: Talented performance groups amazed the audience. Several groups hosted mini-lessons and demonstrations, including makeovers by Beauty Business. Stand-Up Comedy put on a full show of hilarious routines perfected with some help from a professional comic; the dance group impressed with their creative choreography and energetic performance; and Making the Band put on a live outdoor concert that had everyone singing along!

N E W S O L A R A R R AY Chinquapin took a major step toward reducing our carbon footprint with a new solar array that generates 27,000 kwh/ year. This translates into an average annual cost savings of $2,400 - extremely important for this small non-profit, where every dollar counts. Equally important is showing our students that their voices matter, their actions matter, and they can be change agents in their communities as long as they take a stand and put in the work to get it done. We appreciate Rachael Cornick of Houston Renewable Energy Group (HREG) and Dylan Calhoun for realizing the dreams of Eduardo De La Torre (’99) and Chinquapin’s Science Technology and Society Club to reduce energy consumption on campus!

C O L L E G E FA I R Beginning in the 6th grade, Chinquapin students start preparing for their future colleges and careers. College Fair brings together representatives and presenters who provide information about colleges/universities, inform students about what distinguishes their institution from others, and discuss the application and financial aid process. Nearly 97% of middle school and high school students surveyed reported the inaugural Chinquapin College Fair met or exceeded their expectations. Thanks to all of the colleges and universities for attending!

We appreciate Chinquapin alumni who represented their colleges: Morris Nwogwugwu (‘06) - Carleton College Aby Cisneros (‘10) - Houston Baptist University Michael Scrutchin (‘95) - Drexel University & St. Edward’s University Victoria German (‘13) and Joshua Hines (‘13) - Texas Tech University Michelle Nasser, Ph.D. (‘95) - Tulane University Jeff Lemaster (‘94) - University of Michigan Daisy Campos (‘14) - University of Texas at San Antonio Eduardo de la Torre (‘99) - Vassar College Board Member, Tiffany Stafford, represented her alma mater, Emory University. College representatives from the following schools rounded out the day: Baylor University, Sam Houston State University, Texas State University, University of Houston - Downtown and University of St. Thomas.

A L U M N I PA N E L I S T S C H AT WITH SENIORS Our seniors participated in panel discussions with Chinquapin alumni. In-class and virtual sessions allowed seniors to ask questions and get answers. Chinquapin students peppered alumni with questions about navigating the college campus. Alumni gave tips and tricks on how to save money on books and meal plans, discussed roommates and social life and work-study balance, plus more. These alumni kept it real and helped our seniors navigate their overwhelming expectations of surviving beyond the Chinquabubble. We appreciate Eduardo Belalcazar (‘12), Elizabeth Bernal (‘16), Naomi Galindo (‘16), Dr. Marcus Johnson (‘97), Dr. Michelle Nasser (‘95), Morris Nwogwugwu (‘06), Raymundo Pacheco (‘14), and Johnny Tran (‘14) for sharing their experiences with our seniors.
