Daily life of wheelchair users In order to find out what design might hold useful or fascinated for wheelchairs users, we h a ve d o n e s o m e re s e a rc h a b o u t t h e i r d a i l y l i f e . A g o o d d e s i g n s h o u l d s o l ve t h e i r i n c o n ve n i e n c e a n d is durable. The things we found out are as follows.

The lack of flat ground in society When undergoing urban design, the government or the authorities concerned seldom think of the w h e e l c h a i r u s e r s . M a n y s t a i r s a n d u n e v e n g ro u n d or roads may seriously affec t their transpor t.

The irregularity of wheelchair-friendly t rans p o r t at i o n Many transpor tations in the society have yet to install wheelchair-friendly system. Wheelchair users often find it inconvenience to get in the buses or trains.

Difficulties in expending s o c i al c i rc l e Wheelchair users often face the fact that people seldom date them. People always ignore them when planing to go dancing or playing spor t.

Many places are still not accessible Wheelchairs nowadays still have many limitations. They can't move on beach or somewhere non-soild ground.

The Evolutionary history The debut of wheelchair was found in acient China, then was improved by inventor in England.

But it was still not quite user-friendly as it counld only be operated with the help of others.

In 19th century, wheelchairs has improve to another level. It could be operated by users themselves without any helpers. Meanwhile, inventors refer the engine of car to make wheelchair automatic.

In early 20th century, wheelchairs was improved to be less bulky and was able to carry by hands.

At the same time, electric wheelchair was also invented.

The improvement of wheelchair keep going on.

This chair should have t h e f u n c t i o n o f c h a n g i n g f ro m w h e e l s t o s l e d a n d f ro m s l e d t o w h e e l s. S o, we s t a r te d to m a ke s ke tc h u p m o d e l s t h at re f o r m i n g t h e w h e e l c h a i r s . H o w e v e r, w e f o u n d i t d i f f i c u l t t o h a v e b o t h functions it we put the wheelchair in an ordinar y wheelchair s truc ture s. Experiment for R ed e s i g ni ng O l d Chai r s We h a v e p i c k e d u p t w o t y p e s o f o l d c h a i r s f r o m different places. The office chair seems having a s a f e s t r u c t u re f o r t h e u s e r s a l t h o u g h i t i s n o t e a s y for redesign. B ut oppositely, the ordinar y chair with four legs is much easier for redesign in diifferent par ts b e c a us e of i ts g e om e tr i c s h a p e. Ad d i n g a lon g sled to the bottom of the legs will not be too odd fo r i ts outlook . B ut s ti ll, we h ave to p ay attnti on on t he we i g ht of i t.

C h a i r Stru c tu re A s th e s truc ture of a c h a i r i s ve r y i m p or ta nt f o r e n s u r i n g t h e s a f e t y, w e h a v e t o s t u d y more on how to make it possible to stand f i r m l y w h e n t h e u s e r t a k i n g va r i o u s a c t i o n s on it. And what we found effective is t h e C O N N E C T I O N S a n d O B L I Q U E S U P P O R T. But oblique support requires accurate professional physical calculation and kn owle d g e. Th e re fore, i t m ay b e b e tte r for us to m a ke th e c h a i r s wi th le g s a s a s tud e nt.

At the very begining, we are inspired by the structure of skateboard which can easily be removed the wheels to become a somewhat sled board But this is too inconvenient to users because everytime you have to remove the nails to take off the wheels

Then we planned to find or create a easy system that can switch the structure of our chair.

But the fact that this kind of design involves so many calculations and is too clumsy makes us decide to find another better solution.

S e t t i ng u p t he Chai r Co m b i n i n g t h e m a j o r p a r t s , w e h a v e s o o n g o t t h e f i r s t p r o t o t y p e o f t h e c h a i r. L u c k i l t , i t i s able for the user to sit on it. The following step is to rub the sharp par t of the wood in order to make the chair users can sit on it co m f o r t a b l y a n d to e n s u re t h e S L E D PA RTS c a n o p e r a t e s m o o t h l y. T h i s p r o c e s s r e a l l y h e l p s us understand the whole structure of the m o s t b a s i c c h a i r. I t i s re a l l y d i f f i c u l t t o b u i l d up a chair for poeple to sit as we have to be considered by the physical phenomenon and c a lc ulati on a p a r t f rom th e d e s i g n .

Che c ki ng & Re f i ne m ent Then we sprayed it for coloring and test for the w h e e l s - s l e d c h a n g i n g f u n c t i o n . H o w e v e r, i t s e e m s not ver y successful. It works smoothly when it is i n t h e S L E D m o d e. B u t p ro b l e m s co m e o u t w h e n we tur n i t i nto th e WH E E L S m od e.

The wheels cannot S TA N D v e r y s t r o n g l y due to the force of we i g h t.

Fu n c tio n C h a n gi n g The Sled-Wheels function can not operate ver y s m o o t h l y b e c a u s e o f t h e f o rce, i t w i l l b e t u r n e d dow n au to mat ic a lly. Th e re fore, we tr i e d to a d d 4 D o o r - C h a i n Lo c k s o n t h e t wo s l e d s p a r t i n o rd e r he l p it st ands st ra i g htly i n th e wh e e l-m od e. An d we do it su cce ss f ully a s th e 4 loc k s g i ve p re s s ure to t he sl e d par t. Th e s le d p a r t i s h e ld a n d loc ke d ver y tightly. The chair finally c an operate in both t wo mo de smo oth ly.

This process really makes us to find ways and generate different ideas to fix the problem although we are not familiar with its phenomenon. It gives us a good experience for problem solving but not only doing what we want by o u r he a r t.

This par t is different from the traditional w h e e l c h a i r s. I t e n a b l e u s e r s to t rave l s o m e non-solid landform. And the tip of the sled ensure that the whole chair is always wa lki n g on th e s a m e le ve l.

There are 4 wheel locks installed on the c h a i r. A p a i r o f w h e e l l o c k s c a n b e f o u n d o n o n e s l e d. Th i s i s a n i m p o r t a n t d e s i g n to m a i nt a i n t h e s l e d w i l l n o t b e c ra c ke d d ow n when it is in the wheel mode in order to ke e p th e wh e e ls s ta n d s tra i g htly.
