Rays of Sunshine

Dear Friends,

2021 was truly a year like no other as we simultaneously celebrated our agency’s 60th anniversary and Philip’s 25th anniversary as CEO. While we commemorated these historic milestones with our broader community, our focus on mission and providing the highest quality of services possible to our children and families never wavered, as those we serve continue to be deeply affected by the difficult and challenging times in which we live.

Because we serve very young children and families, they are heavily impacted by the critical issues compounding our nation. These include the housing crisis, which has seen rent and home prices in our area soar up to nearly 50%; formula and food shortages, which would have left our young mothers and parents scrambling to feed their children without the incredible support from our community; and the economic conditions, which often create an even harsher environment for our most vulnerable families experiencing the effects of homelessness.

When it rains, it pours — especially for those living at risk. As a member of the Children First family, you help us to form an umbrella of hope that offers protection from the tumultuous storms raging all around those we serve who are navigating the perils of poverty. Throughout the most difficult time of their lives, our children and families know that they are not alone.

At the heart of our vision of empowering children and families in finding their paths to success and self-sufficiency are the staff, volunteers, and supporters who create the bright beams of light that help to guide those we serve on their journeys to brighter futures.

Thank you for being a ray of sunshine in the lives of those we serve as we work together to bring stability and success to our community’s most vulnerable, now and for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Children First serves children from birth to age five, which is the time in a child’s life when the brain completes 90% of its growth and serves as the foundation for all future development.

A child’s early experiences and the environment in which they have them will shape a child’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. This has a direct effect on the adults they will become and the communities in which they will live. The children and families we serve experience some of the most adverse effects of living in poverty, including homelessness, food insecurity, and lack of access to healthcare. By supporting our mission, you create rays of hope and sunshine for our community’s most vulnerable children and families so that one day, their futures will shine bolder and brighter than ever before.

EARLY HEAD START & HEAD START

Early Head Start supports family well-being through the promotion of healthy prenatal outcomes and infant and toddler development from birth to age three. Our Family Advocates are real-life rays of sunshine who work hard to ensure proper access to prenatal care for expectant mothers and provide guidance following the child’s birth. When it is time to transition to the classroom, every child receives the opportunity to develop and learn in the highest-quality early childhood environment.

In Head Start, school readiness is promoted for at-risk children, ages three to five, by supporting families through the development of the whole child. Our Family Advocates emphasize the role of the parents as their child’s first and

most important teacher. Through their work with families in setting goals and achieving self-sufficiency, children are able to join their more economically stable peers for Kindergarten, on pace and ready for success in school.

SERVICES FOR CHILDREN

With a commitment to provide a brighter future for every child, regardless of circumstance at birth or in life, we offer services to the most economically and systemically vulnerable children and families in Sarasota County. These include:

• Infant & Toddler Care

• Early Childhood Education/Preschool

• Nutrition Services

• Healthcare Screenings

• Emotional & Behavioral Support

• RISE, a one-on-one literacy support and mentorship program in partnership with Emma E. Booker Elementary School

• Summer programs to prevent learning loss

• Elaine’s Kids, a summer program for our highest-risk children

SERVICES FOR PARENTS & CAREGIVERS

Services are available for pregnant mothers and children, birth to five, and their parents or caregivers who are enrolled at Children First.

• Family Advocacy

• Vocational Family Advocates

• Workforce Parent Training Program

• Families First Institute

A NATIONAL PROGRAM OF EXCELLENCE

The National Head Start Association (NHSA) designated Children First as a national Program of Excellence, placing us in the top 1% of all Head Start and Early Head Start programs nationwide. To qualify, programs must consistently demonstrate excellence in governance, fiscal management, and, most importantly, service delivery, as well as show continuous support

toward the achievement of robust outcomes for pregnant women, at-risk children birth to five years old, families, and their communities.

Children First has received this coveted recognition that is given out every three years by the NHSA for the fourth consecutive time and is one of only two agencies in the United States to be honored with this designation.

Bringing Sunshine

TO CHILDREN FIRST

Having already undertaken several sustainability efforts including solar hot water heaters and energy efficient insulation, PGP created further opportunity for Children First to strengthen its environmental impact by assisting the agency in conducting a detailed energy audit.

One of these major moments in time for our agency has been the opportunity to participate in the Partners for Green Places (PGP) community initiative and work to build a more sustainable future through a cross-sector partnership.

Launched in October of 2019 with the goal of encouraging organizations and businesses to commit to energy efficiency and sustainability, Children First was ultimately selected as one of three nonprofit organizations to pilot this prestigious initiative.

“Based on our organization’s previous efficiency improvements, the PGP team decided to audit our North Port campus. The structure was built in 2007 and in need of substantial upgrades. After receiving an energy assessment and implementing new efficient practices, our North Port campus has seen a 20-25% reduction in energy usage, as well as a 40% reduction in water usage. This helped us to realize Children First’s full potential in becoming a catalyst for sustainable change in our community,” says CEO Philip Tavill.

In September of 2021, Children First celebrated the successful installation of new solar panels at the agency’s main campus in Sarasota. The 117.26 kW photovoltaic solar system was completed by Brilliant Harvest and is on track to produce 95% of the site’s electricity needs in its first year, with net savings of

As we reflect on 60 years of service to our community, we commemorate the mission moments and milestones that have allowed our agency to flourish and thrive as a four-time designated Head Start Program of Excellence.

$6,000 or more and an overall goal to become net-zero for all electricity consumption moving forward.

Current and future Children First sustainability projects include implementation of LED lighting at all 15 facilities, upgrading all HVAC units to high efficiency heat pumps with programmable thermostats, investing in resource efficiency to promote conservation throughout the organization, and a future solar photovoltaic system installed at other locations, including North Port.

“With nearly 90% of our families living below the Federal Poverty Level ($21,960 for a family of three), these investments from our community partners could not come at a more critical juncture,” says CEO Philip Tavill. “Every efficiency translates into more support for our mission, which means a higher level of service for more children and families. The future looks brighter than ever before as we continue to benefit from ‘bringing sunshine’ to Children First through sustainable energy practices.”

Partners for Green Places is a collaboration between the City of Sarasota and Sarasota County sustainability, Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, and Gulf Coast Community Foundation. The pilot program, seeded by the Partners for Green Places matching grant program, a joint project of The Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities and the Urban Sustainability Directors Network, grew to include William G. and Marie Selby Foundation and Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Seeing the potential for greater impact, DreamLarge made a catalytic investment in establishing a strategy, brand, and platform to showcase the partnership between philanthropy and sustainability and use it as an inspirational tool to drive awareness and adoption of sustainable measures.

Changing Lives

THROUGH THE POWER OF BUSINESS

PGT Innovations has partnered with Children First for over ten years, impacting the lives of hundreds of vulnerable children and families.

CEO Jeff Jackson served on the Children First Board of Directors for six years, including as Chair in 2019. Jeff and his family have been long-time supporters of providing high-quality education and opportunities for children and families in need, inspiring employees and sparking change across the community.

Since 2010, more than thirty PGT employees have contributed $200,400 directly toward our comprehensive and family strengthening services. Hundreds of employees have donated countless hours through volunteer efforts, including mulching and landscaping and the cleaning and organizing of classrooms.

After Hurricane Irma tore through our community in 2017, one of our campuses experienced major damage to its roof, causing destruction throughout the building. At a time when so many were facing chaos and hardship, employees from PGT came together to help us weather the storm. After much cleaning, repairs, and transporting of classroom supplies, we were able to reopen our campus and safely welcome back our children and families.

PGT’s critical support of our major events, including our annual Fairytale Ball and Rockin’ Lobster Beach Party, continues to help our agency’s philanthropic efforts reach new heights. In January of 2021, PGT helped us to kick off our #60for60 special initiative with a volunteer day at our North Port campus in honor of Children First’s 60th anniversary.

“PGT is proud to support Children First and its efforts to make our community the best it can possibly be. For more than a decade, our staff has been involved in the agency’s mission, from volunteering, to sponsoring, to serving on the board, and we are excited to help commemorate this incredible achievement,” says Jeff Jackson, CEO of PGT Innovations.

In addition to receiving high-quality early childhood education, children who attend Children First also receive comprehensive services that support their overall health and development.

The circumstances in which our families live can severely limit their access to healthy foods and proper healthcare, including mental health services.

century.

In May 2019, CEO Matt Beall and his wife, Krystel, Community Outreach & Philanthropy Coordinator, helped spearhead a new program at Children First for young professionals to philanthropically support their communities. As inaugural members of GenerationGIV, Matt and Krystel helped to fund a $5,000 Positive Solutions for Families class through our agency’s Families First Institute, a free course that provides parents and caregivers with effective strategies to promote positive behavior.

At the onset of COVID-19, Matt and Krystel, along with other members of GenerationGIV, supported our mission through our Crisis Fund to ensure that families had a safe place to live, food to eat, and access to essentials for their children such as formula, diapers, and medical care.

For the past five years, Bealls has served as a key ambassador through support of our annual fundraising events. Starting in 2019, Bealls has acted as the Presenting Sponsor and exclusive fashion partner at our annual Flip Flops & Fashion luncheon. Matt and Krystel have not only served as co-chairs, but the couple donate their time and talent to act as fashion show emcees and help raise critical funds for those in need.

In 2020, the pandemic caused the cancellation of our annual fall events, which would have been a major loss of philanthropic support for those we serve. To ensure that our staff could continue delivering the highest quality of services possible, Bealls inspired our community with a challenge match that raised almost $30,000. Through our #60for60 campaign, Bealls employees also donated more than 1,000 cloth face masks for our children, families, and staff to keep everyone safe and healthy.

“Children First is a top-notch organization. They give families an opportunity that otherwise wouldn’t be available. We know that by directly supporting Children First, we are directly supporting families and the health of our communities,” says Matt Beall, Chairman & CEO, Bealls Inc.

Today, PGT and Bealls remain deeply committed to changing lives through the power of business, and remain a steadfast resource for our children, families, and broader communities.

Shining a Light

LETTER FROM VICE PRESIDENT OF PROGRAMS KATHLEEN SULLIVAN

The 2021–2022 school year brought many

celebrations across our campuses as we commemorated sixty years of service to our community.

For six decades, our agency has helped our children and families flourish under even the most difficult circumstances, standing as a pillar of hope and offering guidance through the darkest of times.

From sending 83 children off to kindergarten, happy, healthy, and ready for success to graduating 53 parents across 24 classes through our award-winning Families First Institute, we want to reflect on some of our agency’s brightest moments that would not have been possible without support from our community.

The growth of our mental health services has served as a beacon of hope throughout the past five years, allowing us to be there for our children, families, and staff during the pandemic and beyond. In addition to providing therapy, our Early Childhood Mental Health Specialists offer postpartum screenings, parenting support and consultations, behavioral interventions and support, and classroom consultations that act as lifelines for those we serve.

Since we first began serving infants and

toddlers through our Early Head Start services in 1996, we have made incredible strides in meeting the high demand of a steadily rising waitlist. We are pleased to share that we have expanded our infant and toddler programming for every child in our Early Head Start program to year-round services. This was a major accomplishment that immediately placed 240 young and vulnerable children in the best possible care all year round!

Through support from Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, our Family Strengthening services have continued to meet the ever-evolving needs of our parents and caregivers. Because so many lost their jobs or were forced into severely reduced work hours, our Job Skills Training class, along with our Vocational Family Advocate, have enabled many parents to re-enter the workforce, begin new careers, earn promotions, and improve their overall professional skills.

While we have come an incredibly long way as an agency, we are looking ahead to the next sixty years and beyond because we know that the critical nature of our work never stops. Through the stories of Denise, Tanea, and Olivia, you will see how your support creates a bright reflection on those we serve. Thank you for being there for our children and families and ensuring that no matter how long the storm may last, there will always be sunnier days ahead.

“As a long-time educator and supporter of the Children First mission, I have seen so many families blossom and thrive with the guidance of Children First and its services. The power of education paired with the strength of an entire community’s support can transform the turbulence of poverty into rays of sunshine, stability, and success. While we recognize and celebrate the thousands of lives changed for the better throughout the past sixty years, we are grateful to have you stand alongside those we serve now, and for generations to come.”

Building a Better Life

FROM NEEDING HELP TO HELPING OTHERS

As a Master of Clinical Social Work and licensed Permanent Social Worker, Denise Pacheco Cabrera has a long history of strengthening children and families and building a sense of community.

Denise’s commitment to transforming the lives of others shines through in her incredible work with those in need. While in school at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, she chose to focus the scope of her education in domestic violence and child abuse.

In 2016, she obtained the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification and collaborated on a special project with the Domestic Violence Division of the Puerto Rico Police Department, training officers on prevention and intervention for domestic violence and child abuse in their community. Certified as a legal advocate in the Courts of Puerto Rico, Denise interned with a program that assisted minors removed from their homes due to domestic violence and/or with medical and mental health conditions while obtaining her master’s degree.

On September 16, 2017, Hurricane Maria hit the island. During this catastrophic event, Denise worked directly with rescue services, providing critical support to many Puerto Rican families. After the devastating effects of the historic storm, Denise and her husband made the decision to travel to the United States, seeking stability. It was then that she discovered Children First.

At Children First, Denise was able to continue her crucial work helping children and families in need, and her daughter, Deybrianise, or “Dey,” was enrolled in the Head Start program. Dey recently started Kindergarten, on-par with her peers and ready for success, and looks forward to school each day.

In her role as a Family Advocate, Denise works one on one with the families we serve in setting goals, helping with personal situations, and improving their education. One of her missions as an Advocate is to empower our families so they can continue to be successful after their children have completed our program.

“When a family achieves a goal, whether it’s getting a job, securing transportation, or even a personal milestone, I know I’m creating positive change in their lives,” says Denise. “Not everything is always bright and sunny, but the people that I help are the reason I keep fighting.” There is one case that Denise will never forget. A young, single mother with a significant lack of support came into the care of Children First. She needed a stable place to live and steady employment to take the best care of her daughter possible, and with Denise’s guidance she was able to facilitate everything her child needed.

Denise also serves as a facilitator for our agency’s award-winning Families First Institute, helping our Spanish-speaking parents and caregivers learn effective strategies to promote positive behavior.

While at Children First, Denise received her Family Development Credential, and is in the process of earning her Clinical Social Work license. Recently, Denise presented on behalf of Head Start at the Conferencia de Head Start en Español for her crucial role in working to provide more support services to Latino families.

“Children First is not just about the education of the children, it’s about the success of the entire family.”
—DENISE PACHECO CABRERA, MCSW, FDC

Family well-being and parent engagement is a cornerstone of our work. It’s critical that we strengthen our parents in order to support the success of their children.

Every family at Children First works with a Family Advocate (FA) to set and meet financial, educational, and occupational goals. Because of the high-risk population we serve, we must address the complex issues our families face and work to stabilize

the family as a whole. FAs provide the support, encouragement, and resources families need to achieve self-sufficiency. Together, they create action plans to accomplish their goals.

Brighter than Ever

Former Children First students

Olivia and Malik Harvey know firsthand how critical it is to have access to a high-quality education from an early age.

Their lives are centered around family with three bright and vivacious children: Jeremiah, age 10, King, age 7, and Maliya, age 5. Jeremiah attended Children First when he was a toddler, and to this day, the Harvey family continues to benefit from its phenomenal services. “When we had our kids, we knew we didn’t have to look far to find quality, affordable childcare with amazing teachers we could trust. It was second nature for us to turn to Children First after the wonderful experiences we both had growing up,” says Olivia.

With Maliya enrolled at Children First and their sons now in elementary school, both Olivia and Malik were able to work full-time to support their family of five. To further her involvement and advocacy as a parent, Olivia served on Children First’s Policy Council to help guide the agency’s mission and services.

One day, Maliya came home with an old photo—it was a baby picture of Olivia from her time at Children First! She could hardly believe that her teacher, Miss LaTonda, had kept the photo for all these years. She was overjoyed to reconnect with the woman who used to be her favorite teacher.

When the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic hit our community, Olivia’s job hours were severely reduced, forcing her to seek other employment. She needed something that would allow her to feel professional and keep her skills up, all while offering flexibility to be a mom. Luckily, Children First was offering a Job Skills Training Course as part of the agency’s Family Strengthening services, funded in part by Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation and other generous foundations and individuals..

The course provided a sense of accountability and belonging. Olivia learned about identifying and overcoming obstacles related to employment, resume writing, interviews, and ‘acing’ the first 90 days at a new job. After a mock interview put together by our Vocational Family Advocates, Olivia felt confident to reach for a higher goal, and now works as a paraprofessional at Sarasota School of the Arts & Sciences.

Recently, her daughter, Maliya, completed the Head Start program and began kindergarten. Her husband, Malik, who Olivia says always keeps her on her mark, is a wellknown barber in the community with plans to one day open his own shop.

Olivia has completed her associate degree and has begun her bachelor’s with the goal of becoming a math teacher. From there, she would like to earn her master’s and work as an administrator, with the ultimate goal of running for the school board. Because Olivia and Malik were able to grow and thrive in a healthy environment at the earliest stages of their lives, the lives of their children have been transformed for the better.

The Families First Institute strengthens our most vulnerable families. Parents learn important tools to create positive and enduring changes at home. Classes include Calendar-Based Budgeting, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Kinship Care

Support Groups, Nurturing Dads, Job Skills Training, and Positive Solutions for Families.

With the support of Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, we have expanded our services. This includes the addition of Vocational

Family Advocates, a Parent Training Program, and an expansion of the Families First Institute. Our goal is to help families increase the strength of parent-child relationships, family well-being, and family self-sufficiency.

“Child by child, and family by family, Children First is a changemaker in our community.”

Brighter Future

In 2021, Children First provided comprehensive services to over 750 children and families. Our agency operates all program sites to best serve the families meeting the eligibility requirements for Head Start and other programs. Children from families with incomes below the poverty level, and other guidelines based on risk factors, are eligible for services. All families are then prioritized for enrollment based on individual need.

and achieve a level of stability her family has never experienced. She continues to further her education through Children First’s award-winning Families First Institute, taking courses in budgeting, cooking, and career readiness.

Her journey with Children First began when Tanea was a student at Riverview High School. While she never imagined herself facing the overwhelming obstacle of starting a family so young, Tanea found the support she needed through Children First and its partnership with the Teen Parent Program. She worked diligently to earn her diploma while her daughter Ta’Nylah and son Rayshaud, now 10 and 9 years old respectively, received high-quality care and education.

Now 27, Tanea works as both a dental assistant and cosmetologist. She dreams of one day owning her own salon and is in the process of starting her business. Tanea also has the goal to become a homeowner

After more than a decade, Children First remains a steady presence in the lives of Tanea and her family. Her middle son, Raylan, graduated from the Head Start program in May of 2020 and is now a happy, thriving first grader. She credits his teachers, Miss Maria and Miss Dahlia, for his smooth transition to “the big school.”

Daughter Ma’Kenzie, age 4, is enjoying her first year of the Head Start curriculum, having attended Children First since infancy. After doctors discovered that her youngest child, two-year-old Bryson, had a neonatal stroke during pregnancy, Children First worked quickly to connect Tanea with critical resources for occupational, physical, speech, and feeding therapy. Today, baby Bryson is flourishing in the Early Head Start program and loves coming to school every day.

Tanea considers her Family Advocate, Bailee, to be a huge part of her support system. Over the years, Bailee has helped Tanea go back to school, secure the necessary referrals for Bryson’s therapies, and even attended her oldest son’s football games to cheer him on.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with Tanea and her family for almost six years and have watched them grow, sometimes fall, and get right back up again. Tanea has become her children’s biggest advocate and continues to make strides in her engagement, as well as involvement in their education, health, and well-being,” says Bailee Faulkner, Family Advocate. “She is a great example of how a young single mom whole-heartedly surpasses the challenges thrown her way and does so with tremendous strength and willpower. Tanea and her kids will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am so proud of each and every one of them.”

Through her resiliency and support from both her loved ones, as well as the expert staff at Children First, Tanea and her family have found their path to a future brighter than ever before.

THROUGH SUNSHINE
Tanea Howard is a proud mother to five beautiful and loving children. As a devoted parent, she strives to provide the best knowledge, resources, and skills possible for her children to ensure their healthy growth.
“Whether it’s encouragement, compassion, or connecting us to resources, the love and care my family receives has completely transformed our lives.”
—TANEA HOWARD

Established in 1978, the Teen Parent Program was founded by a group of concerned citizens and community leaders who saw the need for an educational program for pregnant and parenting teens. With students able to stay in school, knowing their babies are in a safe and nurturing environment, all parents are guaranteed the right to an education.

In 2010, Children First partnered with the Sarasota County School District and became the official childcare provider for the Teen Parent programs at North Port and Riverview high schools. In addition to having highly qualified teachers in the classrooms, parents receive one-on-one guidance and support from their Family Advocate as they seek self-sufficiency and success.

Sunshine and Success

A MESSAGE FROM JESSICA ROGERS,

As we commemorated two historic milestones with the celebrations of Children First’s 60th Anniversary and CEO Philip Tavill’s 25th Anniversary, our constellation of community funders and partners were supporting our mission every step of the way.

From special volunteer efforts and “give back” days through our #60for60 initiative to the successful launch of The Challenge for Changing Lives and raising more than $2.3M, this past year brought much needed sunshine into the lives of those we serve.

We are deeply grateful to our Diamond Circle, a dedicated group of extraordinary supporters leading the charge in advancing the mission of strengthening children and families together, for inspiring our community to join The Challenge with their collective gift of $1,060,000. We also wish to thank our 60th Anniversary Co-Chairs and Committee for their commitment to providing the highest level of service to our mission possible.

While the Partners for Green Places initiative brought further sunshine to Children First through the installation of new solar panels at our main campus, our virtual Fairytale Ball helped to unleash “the sparkle within” during our Diamond Anniversary gala, raising nearly $370,000 in support of our children and families. Children First was named a Top 50 Best Nonprofit to Work For nationwide by The Nonprofit Times and was named as one of the top workplaces in Sarasota-Manatee for the third consecutive year by the Herald-Tribune.

We were thrilled to be back in person for our annual fall events, Flip Flops & Fashion and Rockin’ Lobster! We are proud to announce that because of you, we met and exceeded our goal to purchase new playground equipment and shade structures for our children.

In December, the community came out to honor Philip for his tenure as Children First’s CEO. Thank you to everyone who has walked alongside Philip throughout the past 25 years, to everyone who joined us in his special celebration, and all who have made a gift in honor of his steadfast service to our community.

Special thanks to the entire Board of Directors, as well as many past members of the board, for their collective gift of $150,000 to name the Executive Suite at the Dr. Elaine Marieb Early Learning Center in Philip’s honor. Their generosity is helping to seed our endowment as a tribute to Philip’s commitment to the future of Children First!

During the SRQ Good Hero Philanthropic Awards, longtime staff member Bonnie Eskell and the entire Children First Diamond Circle were recognized as ambassadors of the incredible spirit of giving back in our region, as well as their significant impact in realizing the Children First vision. Our holiday heroes helped us to end the year in a positive light after adopting every child and family in our program this holiday season! What a joy it was to share the support of our community with those we serve on top of celebrating such special milestones for our agency.

As newborn babies are welcomed into our Children First family, children move on to Kindergarten, happy, healthy, and confident, and parents find self-sufficiency and success, we know that your critical support helps those we serve shine brighter than ever before.

DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY BRINGS
Jessica Rogers

Our #60for60 Campaign was formed during our 60th anniversary year to highlight the collective partnership from the community led by businesses, individuals, and groups that has created six decades of success and service in support of Children First. Thank you to everyone who helped our anniversary campaign become a success!

Challenge Accepted!

THE CHALLENGE FOR CHANGING LIVES

Our community raised over $2.3M in honor of our agency’s 60th Anniversary during The Challenge for Changing Lives.

The matching gift challenge was led by the Diamond Circle, a dedicated group of extraordinary supporters leading the charge in advancing the mission of strengthening children and families.

Their combined contribution matched, dollar for dollar $1,060,000, given by hundreds of individuals and couples, private foundations, and corporations, all within our local community.

The key philanthropists comprising the Diamond Circle membership include: two anonymous donors, Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation, Dawn and Mitchell Epstein, Julie and Brock Leach, Joan and Dr. Bart Levenson, Katherine and Frank Martucci, Elenor Maxheim in loving memory of John Maxheim, Keith Monda and Veronica Brady, Leslie and Dick Rivera, Gaye and Jack Schwarz, Karen Solem in loving memory of Charles Forman, John Bean and Alexandra Jupin, Lisa and John Giglio, Carol and Richard Kalikow, Bob and Lin Williams, Alison and Howie Madsen, Jo and Stan Rutstein, Mike Rutstein, and CEO Philip Tavill.

“As we celebrate Children First’s 60th Anniversary, we are deeply grateful for this heartfelt support that will

WE MADE IT! Our deep appreciation to the Diamond Circle Members who made The Challenge for Changing Lives possible with a collective $1,060,000 match, and to the members of our community who met this challenge to raise a total of $2.3M for at-risk children and families. result in social, educational, and economic dividends now and well into the future,” says CEO Philip Tavill.

“It has been amazing to see this trailblazing philanthropy from some of our most passionate supporters inspire a community-wide challenge that was not just met but exceeded,” says Vice President of Philanthropy Jessica Rogers. “This is a beautiful representation not just of this historic milestone for our agency, but of the greater Sarasota community’s vision to create equal access to opportunities so that all can thrive.”

Our entire Diamond Circle, alongside staff member Bonnie Eskell, were honored for their incredible contributions to our community at SRQ Magazine’s Good Hero Philanthropic Awards in December of 2021.

“Bonnie and the members of the Diamond Circle were recognized as ambassadors of the incredible spirit of giving back in our region, as well as for their significant impact in realizing the Children First vision. We are deeply grateful for this steadfast support that keeps our mission moving forward each day,” says CEO Philip Tavill.

Good Hero Awards 2021
“The shared commitment from our Diamond Circle members and all who joined The Challenge is an investment, not just in the futures of our children and families, but the future of our community and the world we live in.”
