Reaching New Heights A
MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR AND CEO
Dear Friends and Supporters,
As we reflect on a remarkable school year, we’re filled with optimism for the future. Our mission to strengthen children and families drives continuous improvement, and we are taking flight on new initiatives with strategic planning and innovation.
In July 2023, thirty parent Policy Council representatives and staff joined forces with our Board’s Strategic Planning Taskforce to create a vision centered around three Accelerator Circles:
Innovative Practices for Family Strengthening: Here, we emphasize family engagement, child education, and meeting unmet needs, fostering resilience in families.
Workforce Development & Innovation: This circle focuses on recruitment, retention, and professional development, ensuring our staff is empowered and supported.
Strengthening Community Support: This circle works on building public and private partnerships, growing our ambassador program, and expanding our reach in Sarasota County.
With the generous support of Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, we have reached the halfway point in a six-year, $1.2 million grant, which supports the growth of our Family Strengthening Services. Our Families First Institute has seen significant enrollment growth, with 450 parents participating in our classes over the past three years. We’re also proud to offer all courses in Spanish to serve our diverse community.
As we celebrate 25 years of the Families First Institute, we honor the over 2,200 graduates of the Nurturing Dads Initiative since its start in 1999.
By embracing strategic planning and community collaboration, we are not just anticipating the future but actively shaping it, ensuring every step we take leads to a better, stronger tomorrow. With your sustained support, we will continue to reach new heights.
Thank you for being an integral part of our journey.
Sincerely,
Keith G. Johnson Board Chair

Children First serves children from birth to age five, which is the time in a child’s life when the brain completes 90% of its growth and serves as the foundation for all future development. A child’s early experiences, and the environment in which they have them, will shape a child’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. This has a direct effect on the adults they will become and the communities in which they will live. The children and families we serve experience some of the most adverse effects of living in poverty, including homelessness, food insecurity, and lack of access to healthcare. By supporting our mission, you help our community’s most vulnerable children and families soar so that one day, their hopes and dreams become reality.
EARLY HEAD START & HEAD START
Early Head Start supports family well-being through the promotion of healthy prenatal outcomes and infant and toddler development from birth to age three. Our Family Advocates work hard to ensure proper access to prenatal care for expectant mothers and provide guidance following the child’s birth. When it is time to transition to the classroom, every child receives the opportunity to develop and learn in the highest-quality early childhood environment.
In Head Start, school readiness is promoted for at-risk children, ages three to five, by supporting families through the development of the whole child. Our Family Advocates emphasize the role of the parents as their child’s first and most important teacher. Through their work with families
in setting goals and achieving self-sufficiency, children are able to join their more economically stable peers for Kindergarten, on pace and ready for success in school.

NATIONALLY ACCREDITED
Children First holds several prestigious accreditations that affirm our commitment to quality early care and education. Our Dr. Elaine Marieb Early Learning Center and North Port campuses are accredited by the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs, which uses research-based criteria to document high performance and supports ongoing quality improvement.
Additionally, Children First participates in the “Look for the Stars” Quality Rating and Improvement System by the Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County, further demonstrating our commitment to high-quality care with five accredited campuses. Our partnership site at Riverview High School is also accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), which recognizes programs meeting rigorous standards in promoting child development, health, safety, and family engagement.
Wings of Success A LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF PROGRAMS
Iam thrilled to share some wonderful achievements from the past school year! Your support has been invaluable, and it’s my pleasure to highlight the strides we’ve made together for our children, families, and staff.
In August 2023, we successfully implemented the final stages of our Management Improvement Program (MIP). This program was created after two of our dedicated directors participated in the prestigious UCLA Head Start Management Fellows Program in 2022, with the goal of enhancing support for our direct service staff. This new system has positively impacted our campuses throughout the year and further strengthened our commitment as we underwent federal monitoring from the Office of Head Start. As the provider of Head Start and Early Head Start services in Sarasota County, Children First undergoes rigorous federal monitoring in three domains: Classroom Assessment Scoring System Reviews (CLASS®), Focus Area 1 (FA1), and Focus Area 2 (FA2).
Last school year, we achieved full compliance in the CLASS® and FA1 domains. This winter, we underwent FA2 monitoring, which included a comprehensive review of our policies and practices. I’m proud to share that we were found in full compliance across all areas, with notable commendations for our educators’ knowledge, family services, and economic mobility support for families. A heartfelt thank you to our staff for their unwavering dedication!
In further recognition of our commitment to providing the highest quality and caliber of services possible, we underwent additional observations at the national, state, and local levels.
Both our Dr. Elaine Marieb Early Learning Center and North Port campuses received accreditation from the National Accreditation Commission (NAC) for Early Care and Education Programs.
Our partnership site at Riverview High School was reaccredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), highlighting our dedication to high standards in child development and family engagement.
The Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten classroom at our North Port campus earned an impressive composite score of 6.14 out of a possible 7 points during CLASS® observations by the Children’s Forum.
Finally, five of our centers participated in the Early Learning Coalition’s “Look for the Stars” program, receiving scores that ranged from 3+ stars to a perfect 5-star rating.
Congratulations to our staff for their tireless efforts in achieving excellence across the county!
In our ongoing efforts to support professional growth, Children First proudly participates in the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships for early educators pursuing learning credentials. This past school year, 40 of our staff members enrolled in this program!
Kathleen Sullivan
We celebrated the achievements of three staff members who earned bachelor’s degrees, three who earned associate degrees, and others who completed specialized certifications. These accomplishments significantly enhance the quality of our services, benefiting the entire community.
Moreover, we are proud to announce that Children First has been recognized at state, regional, and national levels within the Head Start community!
Four members of our team received awards from the Florida Head Start Association. Leah Jones, one of our parents, received the Beating the Odds Award. LaShawn’te Lee, our Program Operations Coordinator, was recognized for her pursuit of higher education, and Jane Shaw, Early Learning Inclusion Coordinator, received the Achievement Award for Disabilities Services. I was honored with the
Aubrey Puckett Memorial Award for my advocacy as a former Head Start parent and current Head Start Director. Three of these awards then advanced to the regional level, representing the Southeastern U.S., where Leah Jones, Jane Shaw, and I were further honored.
My recognition culminated in receiving the Aubrey Puckett Memorial Award by the National Head Start Association, an acknowledgment that fills me with immense pride and gratitude.
These accomplishments reflect our profound dedication to our mission, which continues to transform the lives of children and families. Thank you for your commitment to Children First. Together, we inspire and uplift our community’s most vulnerable as they reach new heights!
Elevating Health and Wellness IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
At Children First, our comprehensive services are a cornerstone of our commitment to fostering the overall well-being of the children and families we serve. Designed to operate seamlessly within the daily lives of our families, our program removes barriers such as work disruptions, scheduling challenges, and transportation issues, ensuring that health and wellness support is accessible and effective.
COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH AND NUTRITION SERVICES
Our program delivers a robust suite of services aimed at promoting cognitive, emotional, mental, and physical health:
Physical Activity: Our children engage in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring they stay healthy and active.
Nutritious Meals: We provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks that constitute 50% of each child’s weekly nutrition, adhering to the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines.
Health Screenings: Our children receive thorough medical, dental, hearing, vision, and social/behavioral screenings, facilitated in part through partnerships with LECOM School of Dental Medicine, the Lion’s Club, and CenterPlace Health.
Oral Health: Regular brushing after meals is encouraged, and oral health and hygiene are promoted both in the classroom and at home.
Family Support: Children’s development is fostered by the adults who care for them. We provide families with resources to address their child’s physical, behavioral, and mental health needs while empowering caregivers with tools, strategies, and consultations to support their child’s development and well-being.
Resilience Building: We provide support to help families heal from traumatic experiences and overwhelming situations.
Our program also includes specialized services such as Certified Lactation Consultation sessions, dietitian consults, nutrition and health education, gardening, and farm-to-school initiatives.
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
Our approach includes:
Georgetown Model: We have two Early Childhood Mental Health Specialists on staff who utilize this evidence-based framework for effective early childhood mental health consultation to achieve positive outcomes for children, families, and early care staff.
Perinatal Support: We offer expectant families a comprehensive curriculum on prenatal health and provide home visits within two weeks after delivery. Our mental health and health services staff conduct a twoweek newborn home visit with the family and administer a perinatal screening to determine any mental health concerns.
Early Childhood Mental Health Therapy: Our Early Childhood Mental Health Specialists coordinate referrals with our Early Childhood Mental Health Therapist to deliver timely interventions, assessments, and therapy sessions to children directly on our campuses.
Parent Support Programs: We offer Circle of Security parenting classes and Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) to enhance parent-child attachment and address behavioral, emotional, and social concerns.

COMMUNITY COLLABORATION
With the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation, we have hired an Early Childhood Education Nurse to bolster our comprehensive services and empower families with essential skills, resources, and tools to foster healthy lifestyles for their children.
As she integrates into her role, she has begun conducting the two-week newborn home visits in collaboration with
the Early Childhood Mental Health Specialists and Family Advocates. In addition to managing policies and procedures related to child illness and health alerts, she has created a resource guide for Medicaid-accepting dental offices and pediatric providers in Sarasota and Manatee counties. Furthermore, she delivers health-related training on topics such as Safe Sleep and contributes a Child Health column to our newsletter for parents.
This past spring, we partnered with the Perinatal Mental Health Coordination Hub and First 1,000 Days Suncoast to host two focus groups with Children First parents and caregivers in both North Port and Sarasota. This initiative highlighted the aspirations and challenges faced by families, addressing goals like home ownership and career advancement, and discussing barriers such as community violence and childcare gaps.
We also collaborated on diaper and wipes distribution initiatives in North Port and Sarasota, while simultaneously offering essential information and resources to parents.
Our collective efforts, supported by invaluable community partners, are vital in empowering families and enhancing the well-being of the children we serve. Through continuous improvement and dedicated service, Children First remains committed to nurturing healthier, more resilient families.
HEALTH & INCLUSION SERVICES
All children enrolled at Children First receive medical, hearing, vision, and dental screenings with support from our partners and volunteers from the healthcare community. Children who require extra support can receive early intervention for diagnosed
disabilities, developmental delays, and emotional or behavioral issues.
We have a team of Early Learning Inclusion Coordinators and Early Childhood Mental Health Specialists who provide individualized care or refer a child to our strong network of community partners.

Championing Community VENICE PIER GROUP
Venice Pier Group and the Pachota family have a storied history of championing children and families across Sarasota County.
Over the years, Venice Pier Group (VPG) has created a legacy through their active participation and sponsorship of major community events.
Our dedicated partnership, which began in 2008, took root with the creation of the Flip Flops & Fashion fundraising event, hosted at VPG’s esteemed Sharky’s on the Pier restaurant, situated directly on the Gulf of Mexico.
Now in its 17th year, this event has become a staple in the community, consistently selling out as attendees celebrate by the sea with a day filled with sun, fun, and fashion. Guests revel in delicious fare from Sharky’s, enjoy the fresh gulf breeze, and watch friends and colleagues showcase the latest fashions while impactful stories from Children First families highlight the significant difference made by supporters.
“Venice Pier Group and the Pachota family’s unwavering dedication has been instrumental in our mission to empower and uplift vulnerable children and families. Their commitment goes beyond hosting events or providing hospitality; it’s
about making a lasting difference in our community,” says Children First CEO Philip Tavill.
In 2012, the partnership expanded with the inception of the annual Rockin’ Lobster Beach Party, held the Saturday following Flip Flops & Fashion. This event offers a relaxed, beachside atmosphere where attendees enjoy live music, delectable fare from Fins at Sharky’s, and heartfelt testimonials from Children First families. It’s a perfect blend of leisure and philanthropy, creating an immersive experience that draws the community together for a common cause.
“At Venice Pier Group, our commitment to strengthening the community is at the heart of everything we do. Supporting organizations like Children First is a natural extension of our mission to serve local residents and visitors alike, while actively participating in events that enrich our community,” says Justin Pachota, President of Venice Pier Group.
Together, Venice Pier Group and Children First exemplify the power of community collaboration, working hand-in-hand to change lives, one child and one family at a time.
Making Lasting Connections THE
NEW SARASOTANS
The New Sarasotans club has welcomed residents to the city since 1956 to help them get to know their new home and make friends. Although primarily a social group, the club also supports local nonprofit organizations through philanthropy and volunteering. For the past three years, Children First has been their selected community project.
New Sarasotans club membership consists of up to 110 women who have moved to Sarasota within the past six years. President Eunice Grippaldi joined when she and her husband became full-time residents, and she served on the committee that chose Children First as the club’s community project.
“It ticked off a lot of boxes,” Eunice says, explaining that New Sarasotans particularly enjoy supporting nonprofits that serve children, women, and families.
After touring Children First, she and her committee confirmed it was a perfect fit. “It was love at first sight,” she says. “When we left, we talked about how we were connected to it.”
Since selecting Children First, New Sarasotans have volunteered in a variety of capacities. Members have assisted in classrooms, helped prepare meals in the kitchen, packaged donations and hygiene kits, and volunteered at fundraisers. The club also makes a monthly financial donation to their community project.
Eunice says members feel fulfilled and emotional whenever they go to Children First.
“They have a smile on their face from the moment they walk in until the time they leave and can’t wait to come back,” she says.
For Eunice and several other New Sarasotans who are former educators, Children First’s mission and operations hold special appeal. “It’s a well-oiled machine that should be a model for other schools,” she says. “When I met the leadership team, there isn’t anything they haven’t thought about to bring their best game to their jobs.”
While New Sarasotans’ official support of Children First will end soon as the committee selects a new nonprofit partner, Eunice says many club members have already stated that
they plan to continue volunteering on their own.
“It just brings such wonderful feelings,” she says. “You feel so welcome to be a part of it. They make it a happy place.”

Taking Flight
Abby’s journey with Children First began two decades ago when she was just a child herself, attending the program in 2003.
Now 21, Abby is employed with Children First as a Kitchen Assistant. Her role there is more than just a job—it’s a testament to her resilience and determination. After completing the Job Skills Training program through our Families First Institute, Abby found her place in our agency’s supportive environment. But her path to this point wasn’t easy.
Abby has faced her share of challenges, including two devastating losses in her family. This was such a tumultuous time in her life that she dropped out of school. Yet, even in the face of hardship, Abby never gave up on herself. Last year, while pregnant with her daughter, Valencia, she earned her high school diploma.
Determined to create a better future for her children, Abby also completed a program to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, obtaining her license just weeks after her daughter Valencia was born—a month ahead of schedule!
Family has always been at the heart of Abby’s life. Her mother, Bridget, who has worked at Children First for more than 20 years, is a pillar of support. Bridget, along with Kwame, a Family Advocate at Children First and her mother’s partner, helped Abby navigate the challenges of postpartum depression after Valencia’s birth. Abby’s younger sisters, Lilianna and Sofia, also play an essential role in her life, caring for her daughters and helping whenever needed.
Abby’s two daughters, Valencia, now seven months old, and Violet, one year old, are the center of her world. Both girls are enrolled at Children First, where Abby feels completely at ease entrusting their care to the loving and highly qualified staff. Valencia has started sitting on her own, is now holding a bottle, has learned to wave, and is exploring the art of rolling over.
Abby’s oldest daughter, Violet, is becoming a social butterfly, thanks to support from our agency’s Early Learning Inclusion services. Recently, she has been recommended for therapeutic support after completing an evaluation with our comprehensive services team and has begun speech therapy.
The family-focused environment has been instrumental in the development of her children. Through Abby’s engagement and experiences, she has grown not just as a mother but as a person, learning to advocate for her children and herself with confidence.
For Abby, Children First is more than just childcare for her daughters —it’s a community that has nurtured her growth and the growth of her family. “This is the greatest organization I have ever been a part of, and I will always be grateful for my Children First family.”
True courage is like a kite— a contrary wind raises it higher.
Family well-being and parent engagement is a cornerstone of our work. It’s critical that we strengthen our parents in order to support the success of their children. Every family at Children First works with a Family Advocate to set and meet financial, educational, and occupational goals.
Because of the high-risk population we serve, we must address the complex issues our families face and work to stabilize the family as a whole. Family Advocates provide the support, encouragement, and resources families need to achieve self-sufficiency. Together, they create action plans to accomplish their goals.
Vocational Family Advocates help parents and caregivers strengthen their position in the workplace. They help parents to increase job skills, advance their education, and find employment. They also connect parents with job training resources available in the community.
Beyond the Clouds
Charlene Young is no stranger to family. As a devoted mother, aunt, and big sister, she has always made family her priority. With four children in her care, her household is a lively and loving one, held together by strong bonds.
But it’s her journey with Kamari, her little brother whom she officially adopted in February 2024, that has brought her the most profound sense of completion and joy.
Kamari faced challenges from the very beginning. Born prematurely and exposed to substances before birth, he spent his first month in the hospital receiving the care he needed to grow stronger. Charlene couldn’t bear the thought of him ending up anywhere else. “He’s my baby brother, and I didn’t want him going anywhere else,” Charlene said with a determined heart. Now, Kamari is a thriving, energetic two-year-old—though Charlene jokes he’s going on sixty-two. “He keeps me on my toes. He’s so smart, knows his colors, counts, has full conversations, and even advocates for himself. I love every moment with him.” Charlene learned about Children First through her history with the agency. “My oldest son Jacquez attended the program back in 2004,” she recalled. So, when a caseworker from the Department of Children and Families suggested Children First for Kamari, it was a natural fit.
Kamari started attending Children First when he was six months old, and the change has been remarkable. His highly qualified teachers have been pivotal in his development. Although he initially struggled with separation anxiety, the staff have worked closely with Charlene to ease the transition. “Consistency is key. He tells me he wants three hugs before I leave, and once I give them, everything’s okay.” Kamari has adjusted beautifully, growing more independent and confident each day.
As an active participant in the Children First community, Charlene attends family engagement activities and works alongside the educators and staff to ensure Kamari’s success. She was also nominated for the prestigious Galaxy Awards, celebrating parents and caregivers for their outstanding achievements.
For Charlene, Children First is more than just childcare. “The staff all love Kamari, and his smile melts your heart. I’m so happy he’s there. Thank God for Children First and Bailee, my Family Advocate. She always keeps me organized and engaged, and I couldn’t do this without their support.”
Bailee is equally proud of their accomplishments. “Charlene and Kamari are a delight to be around. Charlene is a friendly face, always positive despite challenges. She exemplifies advocacy for Kamari’s needs and has stepped up to be a model caregiver. I’m so proud of them both!”
As Charlene reflects, she sees herself not just grounded in her role but also soaring beyond the challenges she’s faced. “It’s like we’re flying together, above the hardships, rising with love and support.” The joy she feels with Kamari and her children propels her higher into the clouds, and together, they embrace the boundless possibilities of the future.
The Families First Institute strengthens our most vulnerable families. Parents learn important tools to create positive and enduring changes at home. Classes include Budgeting & Family Finances, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Job Skills Training, Tools for Being a Great Dad, Job Skills Training, Circle of Security, and Positive Solutions for Families.
With the support of Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, we have expanded our services. This includes the addition of Vocational Family Advocates, a Parent Training Program, and an expansion of the Families First Institute. Our goal is to help families increase the strength of parent-child relationships, family well-being, and family self-sufficiency.
Reaching for the Skies
Children First operates our program sites to best serve the families meeting the eligibility requirements for Head Start and other programs. Children from families with incomes below the poverty level, and other guidelines based on risk factors, are eligible for services. All families are then prioritized for enrollment based on individual need.

New Horizons
Olivia Lay is the proud mother of Jahkai, her bright and energetic three-year-old son. However, the road to their success hasn’t been without challenges. As a young first-time mother, Olivia has faced the complexities of balancing her own education and career aspirations while ensuring the best possible future for her child. With the help of Children First, she has been able to rise above these obstacles and build a thriving life for herself and Jahkai.
Here is a part of Olivia telling her story: “Months prior to having my son in 2021, I graduated and completed the Cyesis program at North Port High School. This program is offered to students who are teen parents or soon to-be parents, like myself at the time. In doing so I gained one of the biggest benefits: securing a spot for my child at Children First. Since being enrolled with this organization, my son continues to learn all the necessities and everything in between—he has flourished in reaching so many milestones.
Being a first-time mother does have its challenges. However, with the help and guidance from Children First, there’s nothing I haven’t been able to achieve! I have seized many opportunities for professional, academic, and personal growth. I am currently a student at the State College of Florida working toward earning my Associate of Science degree in radiography.
My goal for my career stems from being in the medical academy all four years of high school. This path offers stability and flexibility for my son and me. While taking college classes, I am also employed as a Home Health Aide. As of now, I reside at Our Mother’s House, a critical partnership that provides stability for single mothers as we work toward our goals, as well as creating a better life for not only ourselves but our children too.
I have enrolled in the Families First Institute, completing courses in Budgeting, Circle of Security Parenting, Job Skills Training, and the Parent Training Program. I also have become a voice for other families at Children First by being elected to the parent-led Policy Council for the second year in a row, representing the Early Head Start families at the Venice Campus.
As part of the Council, I help make decisions that guide Children First’s mission and encourage other parents to be their child’s most important advocate. Children First is a big helping hand in shaping who my little family is today. As a single mother who worries about everything, I feel more than confident having my child attend Children First.”
Grateful for the unwavering support of Children First and their community partners, Olivia reflects on how far she and Jahkai have come. She states, “We wouldn’t be where we are today without this organization. I am so thankful for Children First, and I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
Our Mother’s House of Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice, Inc. provides shelter and guidance for single mothers and their children who may otherwise experience homelessness. Mothers work toward self-sufficiency by attending life skills classes on topics such as parenting, self-esteem, nutrition, and financial literacy.
Children First partners with Catholic Charities to provide childcare and family advocacy services directly on campus, ensuring that resident children receive Early Head Start services while their mothers attend school or work. The licensed and certified programs prepare children to enter Kindergarten healthy and developmentally on par with their peers from more stable socioeconomic backgrounds.

LETTER
ASoaring Together
FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF PHILANTHROPY
s we reflect on the past year at Children First, our hearts are filled with immense gratitude for your contribution to strengthening our mission. Your unwavering support made our 2023–2024 school year one of remarkable achievements and profound impact, and I am thrilled to share some of our milestone moments with you.
On April Fool’s Day, we embarked on a magical journey “Through the Looking Glass” at our 23rd Annual Fairytale Ball. Thanks to your generosity, this enchanting evening surpassed our expectations, raising over $600,000!
The Future Scholars Fund reception was another highlight of the spring, where we celebrated the children and families benefiting from our 529 College Savings Plan initiative. Since its inception in 2021 by anonymous donors, this program has grown with the support of community champions, now benefiting over 60 families in soaring to new heights through education.
At our Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, we celebrated our team of nearly 700 volunteers for their extraordinary contributions. From classroom support to serving on a committee, our Board of Directors and Leadership Team honored their commitment and the difference they make for our children and families. We also took a moment to recognize PGT Innovations for their generosity, which supported our Butterflies infant classroom through the Brighter Futures initiative.
In October, we launched our $600,000 matching gift challenge led by our Changemaker Collective. This initiative, comprised of leaders committed to creating change in our community, inspired extraordinary generosity. Thanks to their matching support, we raised over $1.2 million! We extend our heartfelt thanks to the key philanthropists in the Collective: Anonymous, Keith Monda & Veronica Brady, the Jean Delynn Foundation in honor of Elenor Maxheim, Dawn & Mitchell Epstein, Lisa & John Giglio, Stephanie & Allen Hochfelder, Brock & Julie Leach, Joan & Dr. Bart Levenson, Elenor Maxheim, the Jerome & Mildred Paddock Foundation, Linda Rhault, Gaye & Jack Schwarz, Karen Solem, Joe & Nora Stephan, and the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
In addition to supporting the Collective, the Toulmin Foundaton made a second, powerful two-year commitment to establish a crucial new role: the Early Childhood Education Nurse. This position, along with their previous gift, enhances our services and equips families with essential tools for cultivating healthy lifestyles for their children.
Our fall 2023 events, including the 16th Annual Flip Flops & Fashion Luncheon and the 11th Annual Rockin’ Lobster Beach Party, were truly spectacular. Flip Flops & Fashion, a sunny day on the Gulf, allowed us to enjoy a fashionable and philanthropic afternoon while hearing from inspiring parent Leah Jones, who was recognized by the Florida Head Start Association for overcoming significant obstacles on her pathway to self-sufficiency.
At Rockin’ Lobster, guests savored a stunning sunset, celebrated our mission, and heard from parent Renee Sensenbrenner about our agency’s critical support of her daughter through our early learning inclusion services. Thanks to you, these events were the most successful since their inception!
In November, we gathered with our Circle of Friends, a dedicated group of supporters who have given over $25,000 cumulatively. This intimate celebration, hosted by Dawn & Mitchell Epstein, provided a chance to hear from senior Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist Arianne Kopacz about the critical work being done with our children, families, and staff, as well as Bill Villafranco, trustee of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. Bill’s tribute to Virginia, whose legacy of philanthropy has greatly influenced our work, was a poignant reminder of the impact we are making together.
Jessica Rogers
Finally, our holiday season was brightened by our incredible Holiday Heroes. Thanks to the generosity of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Andrea Capek and the Realtor’s Association of Sarasota/Manatee, and many others, every child and family in our program was “adopted” and celebrated. Your kindness made this holiday season truly special.
As we look back on these accomplishments, we are reminded of the profound difference your support makes in the lives of the children and families we serve. Together, we are creating lasting change as our families soar higher than ever before. Thank you!
