Childhaven is a founding member of the Skyway Coalition, which focuses on community-led development without displacement. The Skyway community has experienced decades of systemic racism and is home to the state's highest percentage of Black families. Yet, historically, King County has failed to invest in Skyway. In partnership with the Renton Innovation Zone Partnership (RIZP) and members of the Skyway Coalition, Childhaven provides Skyway families with early learning, mental health, and access to multiple resources for health and healing, strengthening the building blocks for a vibrant, diverse, and thriving community.

At childhood, a crucial time when mental health is most important, one client faced adversity. As an adult without a support network, they faced the challenges of addiction and being without shelter while nine months pregnant.

When their daughter was born, they were determined to change the course of their lives. Then they found Childhaven. Together with the Childhaven team they created a family-centered care plan, that supported their daughter at every stage of early life and in rebuilding theirs. Through their hard work, they are both now thriving.

As a mother of two daughters, ages thirteen and one, and an immigrant who does not speak any English, this mom experienced barriers to accessing the services she needed to become stable in her community. She and her family were connected to Childhaven’s Healthy Start program and a Home Visitor team member. With the help of the Home Visitor, she can now support her daughter’s social, emotional, and physical needs. When she contracted COVID-19, Childhaven was there to provide rental assistance and basic necessities for her children. Whether diapers, toys, or learning activities, this family is connected to relationships and support they need to thrive.

In the past 5 years, Childhaven has gone from serving 350 kids and families to being well on our way to meeting our goal of serving more than 3,000 by 2024 to meet growing community needs.

A single mom and caregiver of three active girls and one beautiful baby credits Childhaven’s continuum of care with changing her family’s daily life. In partnership with her Family Support provider, she has accessed community resources, has many of her family’s physical needs met, and thrives as a Family Support group leader. With Childhaven’s supportive services, she overcame stressors that she faced, and the outcomes are now very positive.

The key to this success is finally feeling less alone in her struggles as a parent and her connection and trust built with her Family Support provider and thus stronger relationships with her children.
