THE MAGIC OF THE UNEXPECTED
a note from the team
With each unfolding spring, the world awakens anew, bringing with it a spectacle of serendipity—those joyful, unexpected moments that seem to stitch the disparate threads of our experiences into a beautifully coherent tapestry. Just as nature bursts forth with its vibrant blossoms, each element perfectly timed and placed, so too do the stories within this journal reflect a similar harmony.
This season, we explore the marvel of connections. Like the artful convergence of lines in a painting, each stroke contributing to a greater vision, or the quilt comprised of many fabrics, each piece telling its own story yet together forming a comforting whole. These are the serendipitous moments that we cherish—where the unexpected brings not just surprise, but joy.
At The Children’s Home, we witness daily how lives intertwine. Our children, each with their own past and dreams, are like seeds finding their place in the soil, growing toward the sunlight of their potential. They learn from those who have walked before them—those who have turned their trials into triumphs and are now paving the way for others. This chain of influence and improvement, of dreams nurtured and futures built, forms the new traditions that our children will carry forward.
As we turn the pages of this journal, let’s reflect on our own lives and the serendipitous events that have shaped us. Each experience, each person we meet, contributes to our story. And as we share in these narratives, we find that what might have seemed coincidental was instead a piece of a larger, more beautiful design.
Thank you for being an essential part of this journey, for every moment of support contributes to the enduring legacy we build together. This spring, may you find joy in the unexpected, see the beauty in the unfolding, and celebrate the serendipitous symphony of life.
“When I saw him again after all that time, it felt like a lost piece of myself returned home.”

How one donor turned two passions into life-changing impact
ples became the difference. Awoken by thoughts of the child trafficking survivors she'd recently learned about and the unethical puppy breeding practices she witnessed firsthand, Christian was driven to action.
This convergence of concerns led to a serendipitous night of planning—mapping out a business model that would marry her passion for ethically breeding and raising puppies with her desire to help the rescued kids living a world away.
Thus, Doodles Making a Difference was born.
For nearly a decade, Christian has given 25% of her profits to supporting the care and education of rescued children. For all that time, she has remained one of the kids' biggest champions, and finally, in 2024, she got to meet them face to face.
The story of The Children’s Home unfolds as many building projects do - brick by brick - but its also painted with broad strokes of community effort and unexpected blessings.
It begins with an empty field surrounded by rice paddies and the dream of many, destining it to become more than just soil and grass. It was to become a home - a sprawling sanctuary for over 1,500 child trafficking survivors to reclaim their childhoods and prepare to live bright futures.
First came the four-year collaborative task of building the structure itself. Next, the completion of projects and rooms - a multi-phase project we're still watching unfold.
A pristinely laid paver drive made for play, transport, and dust reduction. A Medical Center outfitted with essential staff and equipment to care for the health of every child. Gardens, carefully tended, now lush with the fruits of labor and learning. A security wall, funded by a grateful graduate, to provide increased protection for the kids.
All made possible by the radical generosity of many.
Inside, rooms that once echoed with the hollow promise of potential now buzz with technology and unity. A computer lab and indoor assembly hall here, a multipurpose room and tailoring center there—each space meticulously outfitted to foster learning, creativity, and camaraderie among its young inhabitants. The walls, freshly painted in hues as lively as the spirits they shelter, tell silent stories of joy and the artful splashes of life.
This haven, continuously woven from the threads of past, present, and future, stands as a living quilt of serendipity.
As it grows, so do its children, each nurtured not just by the physical structure, but by the love and dedication that built it, brick by brick. It's a beautiful unfolding, reminding us that every thread matters, each moment building upon the last to create something truly magnificent.

We desire to do things uniquely better. To be lifelong learners, innovating where possible while also holding fast to time-honored traditions. To not be held back by fear of failure, and instead set our goals realistically high, adjusting when needed.
To view feedback as a gift that is key in helping us serve the rescued kids better. To communicate every story, email, social media post, financial decision, impact update, and booklet to the very best of our ability, showing you just how significant your support is. So we can end human trafficking forever.
A RECIPE FOR SERENDIPITY
Just like a batch of Kitchen Sink Cookies—where leftovers create something unexpectedly delicious—the story of The Children’s Home and the rescued kids is a reminder of how seemingly unconnected pieces can come together to make something beautiful.
Whether it’s leftover Valentine’s Day chocolates, a mix of Easter candies, or even the last crumbs of a favorite snack, Kitchen Sink Cookies show us that life’s little leftovers can spark the sweetest surprises. They’re the perfect metaphor for the serendipity we see at work every day: kids finding joy, hope, and purpose in what once seemed broken.
INGREDIENTS
2 sticks room temperature salted butter
1 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs + 1 yolk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
2 cups old fashioned oats
11/4 cups holiday chocolate candies
1 cup chopped mini pretzel sticks
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips/chunks
1/2 cup white chocolate, butterscotch, or caramel chips
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and vanilla until combined. Beat in the eggs and 1 egg yolk, one at a time, until combined. Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Beat in the oats.
3. Fold in 1 cup of the chocolate candies, the pretzels, chocolate chips, and choice of white chocolate, butterscotch or caramel chips.
4. Roll the dough into 1/4 cup size balls. Place 3 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
5. Transfer to the oven and bake for 8 minutes, then rotate the pan and bake another 2 minutes. Pull the pan out and push the remaining chocolate candies into the cookies. Bake 2-3 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet. They will continue to cook slightly as they sit on the baking sheet.
6. Eat warm or let cool and store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
