SITE ANALYSIS

SITE This site is in a conservation area of special architecturalor historic interest, which is considered worthy of special attention, protection and improvement.

It is the combination of buildings, street pattern, trees, open spaces and other features, which give a conservation area its distinctive character rather than individual buildings.

The Crescent is part of the A6 main arterial route to the north and west linking Salford and Manchester with the national motorway network and adjacent towns. This road provides a spine at the centre of a pedestrian walkway network allowing free access throughout the conservation area. To the north of the main road there are a number of walkways between the educational and civic establishments, with links into and through Peel Park to the northern University campus, Frederick Road in the north, and Meadow Road across the Irwell in the east. To the south of the A6, there is free pedestrian access between the squares of Albion Place and Acton Square that offer quiet resting areas. To the rear of the former Fire Station access can be gained to the attractive Fire Station Square, although this is a private residential area. It is anticipated that the proposed reinstatement of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal will offer an opportunity to provide additional pedestrian links within the area. Work on the Irwell City Park initiative may improve links between Peel Park, the adjacent riverside walkway and the areas to the east of the river.

SITE ANALYSIS WAS DONE TO STUDY WHETHER THE SITE HAS ADDIQUATE TRANSPORATION LINKS AND WHETHER THE ROAD TOWARS THE SITE HAS ENOGH WIDTH TO CARRY THE MODULAR UNIT, SINCE IT IS PREFABRICATED OFF SITE AND TRANSPORTED TO THE SITE.

UNIVERISTY CAR PARKS OTHER CAR PAR STUDY ON EXISTING CARPARKS NEARBY WAS DONE TO UNDERSTAND WHETHER IS THERE ANY NEED FOR FURTHER ADDITION OF CARPARKS FOR THE CLIENTS IN THE SITE. FROM THE STUDY ,IT SHOW THERE IS LOTS OF CAR PARKS NEAR THE SITE, OWNED BY UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD AND MY CLIENT IS A STUDENT IN THE UNIVERSITY, SO THERE ISNT ANY NEED FOR FURTHER ADDITION OF CAR PARKS SI NCE HE CAN USE IT FOR FREE, AND THE FAMILY DOESNT HAVE A CAR.

BUILDING HEIGHTS NUMBER OF FLOORS Building heights were studies so as to understand how the shading from the near by buildings would affect and wheither is there any distraction of views from near by buildings and the possibility of shading and screaning of sunlight might occur, and also to comply with the surronding building height so as it look similar to the near by buildingd, since it is in the conservation area, i did not want it to be like a juxtaposition architecture.

To the southeast of The Crescent, in an area that were originally fields and gardens canal side wharves were constructed, linking through to Oldfield Rd. The Canal; originally terminated at this location, but in 1808 a link with the River Irwell was created through the development of five locks. This canal link and the wharves have subsequently been filled and the area is now occupied by various industrial uses.

Lark Hill and Peel Park: Lark Hill Mansion, dated from 1792, originally stood to the north of The Crescent. A public park was laid out and opened on the grounds surrounding the mansion and the meadowland to the north in 1846. The park was named after Sir Robert Peel who had been a key figure in the campaign for public parks and who had also contributed funds towards its creation.

It was designed by Joshua Major & Son and its layout was typical of its time, with a formal avenue leading down from the ornate gateway that was constructed on The Crescent. The park was later enlarged and developed further through the provision of more formal terracing and a flight of steps. However, relatively little of the original design remains today, with Salford Museum and Art Gallery and parts of Salford University now having been developed on southern parts of the original park.. Having played an important role in the creation of the public free libraries movement, the mansion house on the Lark Hill estate was opened as a Free Museum and Library in 1850,

Perhaps the most significant post-war development in the area was the widening of the A6 in 1964. This resulted in its original width being almost doubled and effectively severed any links with the River Irwell below.

Throughout the 1980’s, environmental improvement works were carried out to pedestrianise Acton Square and formalise Albion Place as a pedestrian square, following the closure of the Fire Station, which itself became the Viewpoint Gallery before its current day use by the University.

Overall development of the built environment: The figured ground plans below show how the layout of buildings in the area has changed from the late 1800’s to present day. The locations of the built up areas are broadly unchanged, with development continuing to front the main route of The Crescent in the south and clusters of development flanking the line of the railway. The exception is the expansion of the university through the north-south spine of the area.

Plan 4: Built form in 1894 However, there has been a significant shift in building footprints. The pre 1950 form was of smaller buildings that defined street layouts (often in a grid), which made the area permeable and comprehensible. From the mid-twentieth century there was a move away from these smaller buildings, towards much larger modern education facilities, whose size reflects the need to accommodate almost 21,000 students and 2,500 members of staff today. These buildings tended to be set within larger plots containing areas of open space and car parks, resulting in the much more fragmented urban form that we see today.

Due to the ppresent pandemic situation he spent 95 % of his day inside his accomodation, and studying online , so he needs a space to do drawings and modelling and space should have lots of lights, he is coming from a hot and shinny country and ended up in a cold country and during pandemic which can have a serious effect on his mental stability, he use to do lot of o gardening back home so he likes to have a space where he can some plants and enjoy the fresh air..He wants it to be a bright space and needs a view (balcony if possible) .

CLIENT STUDY AND REQUIREMENTS aA family of three, mom, dad and son .Dad is 30 years old who works in a softwares field who currently works from due to pandemic, mom who is 28 years old who work as nurse in salford royal hospital and son who is 4 years old who goes to nursery.

The family spent lot of time with in the house, the need to be a average neither too big or small, they are so lazzy to clean the big apartments, so they want it be tiny and cozy with lots of bright light entering and a balcony with a seating space for three.
