Message from the Headmaster Welcome to the Spring 2020 edition of News from Chigwell. What follows is a sample of some of the activities and events that have taken place across the Chigwell community over the last six months. We are keen to enrich the pupils’ learning in the broadest sense, learning that takes place in the classroom and beyond. Read more about our pupils getting out and about on pages 17-19

including our Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award canoeists in Wales. However, we also believe that a rich and varied programme of co-curricular opportunities is important to develop character, resilience and the ability to work with others; these activities may become life-long interests and they are fun. It is also important for young people, and indeed the not so young, to work with partners in the community beyond the School. You can read more about our charitable

endeavours such as our Chigwell community running team raising considerable funds for Cancer Research UK on page 10, to helping the homeless in Harlow on page 12. Do remember that the examples given here are only a sample of what has taken place. Chigwell really is a very busy place in which pupils and staff work very hard together in support of each other and that in itself, helps strengthen the Chigwell community. n

The Sunday Times School Guide Chigwell School has been celebrating the excellent news that Parent Power has ranked them as the fourth best independent school in East Anglia. This rating is based on their superb public examination results. Parent Power is widely acknowledged as the most authoritative survey of the country’s best schools. The rankings in the secondary school league tables are determined by the percentage of examination entries gaining

A* to B grades at A-level this summer and the percentage of entries returning A* and A grades at GCSE. This is the 27th edition of the guide, which includes a national database for parents to compare the performances with other schools across the country. Chigwell School was only one of three schools in Essex to make the prestigious guide for 2020. The Headmaster, Michael Punt, commented: “We were delighted that so many pupils performed so well in their GCSE and A level exams last summer. To have a quarter or more GCSE results at grade 9 and half of A level results at

A or A* is a reflection of the dedicated hard work of both students and staff. As a school we aim to develop the whole person through a broad range of co-curricular opportunities

and the majority of the students have made a really positive contribution to the wider life of Chigwell alongside their studies. We are very proud of them all.” n

Chigwell Host London Academy of Excellence Students from London Academy of Excellence enjoyed a day of psychology presentations and personality analysis at Chigwell. The School is one of a group of independent schools which work with LAET, a maintained selective sixth form college which opened two years ago in Tottenham. The college aims to offer support for A level students in the area hoping to go on to selective universities. Some students and staff spent the day with Chigwell students working together and sharing experiences of starting A level courses in general and Psychology in particular. n

Award-winning Author Inspires Avid Readers Sarah Crossan, the current Children's Irish Laureate and Carnegie Award-winning author visited Chigwell School.

She spoke eloquently to our Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils, highlighting the need for them to carry on reading and enjoying poetry beyond their studies. Sarah explained that

they hear poetry all the time and it is not limited to just books. School librarian, Mrs Sara Bloomfield, commented that Sarah’s performance of a scene from Romeo & Juliet was

one never to be forgotten. Later, Sarah also spoke at the Senior School assembly and then took a Q&A session from our Reading Champion and Book Clubs. n

Learning+ at Chigwell Learning+ is a suite of initiatives designed to offer Chigwellians the chance to think for themselves outside the classroom.

We encourage participation and the most able particularly enjoy the chance to challenge and question, and to investigate areas beyond the curriculum. The elements of the Learning+ programme include TICs (Top Institutions and Courses),

Andrew Pennington The CAN (Chigwell Academic News), Higher and Extended Project Qualifications (HPQ and EPQ) and The Williams Project.

Tomas Cvrcek

The Williams Project is a speaker society designed to give Chigwell pupils and staff the chance to learn from experts, outside the classroom and in an informal environment. The Project is named after

Bernard Williams, one of the foremost British philosophers of the 20th century, and an Old Chigwellian. This year’s speakers have included Andrew Pennington (ex MI6) who gave a talk about the ‘Spies or Defenders?’ and Tomas Cvrcek OC who spoke on ‘The Joys and Burdens of Freedom: Eastern Europe 30 Years After the Fall of Communism.’ n

Higher and Extended Project Qualifications Year 11 and 13 students showcased their projects and research at the Higher and Extended Project Qualifications presentation evening. Working on their own, each student had designed, researched and executed a project on a topic of their own choice. From their attentiongrabbing stands, students talked ardently about their chosen topic to an audience which included pupils, parents,

teachers and governors. HPQ and EPQ projects covered a huge range of disciplines encompassing science, medicine, law, economics, politics, art and history, as well as focusing on pertinent issues such as Brexit, plastic pollution, cancer treatments and even Ovid. The efforts of the Year 11 students will be rewarded with an extra GCSE, whilst for Year 13 students their projects allow them to develop their interest in a particular area and gain a qualification equivalent to half an A Level. n

Howard and Mitchell Essay Presentation Evening

Congratulations to sixth form students, Zachary Edwards and Alice Chapman for winning this year’s Howard and Mitchell Essay Prizes.

These prestigious awards are in recognition for a wellresearched and written extended essay on science (Howard) and humanities (Mitchell). This year’s Mitchell essay prize was won by Zachary who wrote a piece entitled ‘To what extent

is a unified theory of physics possible?’ The runner-up for this prize was Benjamin Hamid who wrote an essay looking at links between mathematics and philosophy. This year was the first time that the essay prizes were opened for submissions

from incoming Year 12 students so it was particularly pleasing to see Zachary rise to the challenge and win in a contest with students in the year above him. The Howard essay prize was won by Alice who asked ‘Should the cognitive or behaviourist perspective be the primary focus when it comes to second language learning?’ in her piece. The runner-up in the humanities category was Julia Lasiota. Both Zachary and Alice presented the ideas contained in their papers at an event in the Swallow library which was attended by staff, students and parents. Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Dr Gillian Groszewski, would like to thank the judges for the essay competition: Mr Bryan Porter, Mr Richard Maynes, Mrs Emma Rea and Mr Simon Pepper. n

Meet the Future The Meet the Future series of informal talks are held frequently for current students to benefit from advice from recent former students (Old Chigwellians) now starting out in their chosen careers.

Harry Benjamin, who works in radio broadcasting and sports reporting, was one of the OCs to return. He discussed how studying Drama, English Literature and Geography as A-Levels before then going on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the University of East Anglia has led him into surprising professional directions. Another OC that gave a talk was Meera

Meera Ragha

I Can Engineer Competition Success The Design and Technology department was delighted that ten Year 8 pupils were once again shortlisted for the annual I Can Engineer competition run by the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE). As a result of their success, the selected pupils were invited to an Awards Day hosted by Jacobs Engineering Group, this year’s sponsors of the event. During this day, the pupils were given the opportunity to engage in hands-on engineering challenges, view the work of the finalists from other schools and hear several engineers talk about their work both in London and overseas. These presentations gave an

interesting and informative view of civil engineering, and ranged from the design of a children’s activity space in East London-designed by children and created by engineers to a high specification office building in Dubai, and even the construction of a swing bridge in rural Bolivia! The pupils also learned about the flood defence systems in place in London, which reflected the theme of this year’s competition, which was to design an innovative replacement for the Thames barrier. In response to this design brief the shortlisted pupils did exceptionally well; not only was it a huge

achievement to be a finalist in the competition, but several pupils were also given additional recognition. Thomas and Arjun were awarded the highly commended certificate in the Innovation category for their ‘ATLR’ barrier design, Sophie and Emily received a highly commended certificate in the Bazalgette Engineering category for their ‘Coast Busters’ design and Pranay and Merzi were also awarded a highly commended certificate in the Bazalgette Engineering category for their ‘ECCOW’, environmentally friendly flood defence system. Roma, Kayuki, Larissa and Eloise also did

fantastically well to receive their finalists certificates. Overall, all pupils enjoyed the day and learned a lot about the diverse work of civil engineers. n

Annual Epping Forest Schools’ Parliamentary Debating Competition At a keenly contested debate about climate change protests, between eight different schools, the Chigwell School team of Nichita and Filip were judged runners-up. The event was Nichita’s first debating competition and he

acquitted himself extremely well, backed up by the more experienced Filip. Chigwell debating students: Julia, Denys, Aleksa and Matthew all attended to give the pair their support. English teacher, Mr Roderick Lonsdale commented “Everyone agreed that it had been a most successful evening and that they had all learned a lot about different debating techniques”. n

Young Minds Quiz Local MP Candidates The School hosted a hustings-style event in which four of the candidates seeking to become the MP for Epping Forest answered a range of questions. Chigwell students were joined by others from Roding Valley High, Epping St John’s and Davenant Foundation schools and together they asked candidates about the funding

of party policies, prevention of knife crime, the future of Trident, care for members of the LGBTQ+ community and any party policies with which candidates themselves do not agree. Thanks go to Rt. Hon Dame Eleanor Laing (Conservative), Steven Neville (Green), Dr Vicky Ashworth Te. Velde (Labour) and Jon Whitehouse (Liberal Democrat) for engaging so enthusiastically and to Year 13 student, Ziyad Chaudhary who was the chairman. n

ART & DESIGN

Alice Hume Exhibition The School Gallery displayed an exhibition of stunning textiles by artist Alice Hume. For her show at Chigwell, Alice selected a number of

her woven textiles pieces, images of her studio and also development work from her sketchbooks. As well as presenting many incredible final pieces, the exhibition also provided a fantastic insight into Alice’s working methods

and the sources which inspire and inform her textiles. Head of Art and Design, Mr Edwin Aitken, said that “we were also delighted that Alice visited school and led a fascinating Art+ workshop for our KS3 pupils connected to basic

weaving techniques. This session was greatly enjoyed by all of the pupils who attended it, and they were really pleased that they could exhibit the final weaves that they completed during their workshop alongside Alice’s work in the school gallery.” n

Heavy Metal and Still Life Painting Art+ Workshop On Open Day pupils in years 7-9 had the opportunity to participate in a practical painting workshop led by Dr Tom Cardwell. For his workshop at School the pupils investigated new ways of representing the theme of ‘still life’ and produced a series of

stunning, collaborative paintings that reinterpreted images from contemporary visual culture. Tom is a senior lecturer at Wimbledon College of Art and a recent graduate of the University of the Arts London (UAL). In 2017, he completed his practice-based PhD in painting and his doctoral thesis ‘Still Life and Death Metal:

painting the battle jacket’ where he employed painting practice to examine the customised jackets made by heavy metal fans. His research has been published in several academic journals and he recently presented elements of his work at the conference: ‘Teaching Painting; Painting the New’ at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. His own

meticulous and highly detailed paintings have been exhibited widely and in these images Tom has explored themes connected to Dutch still life painting of the Golden Age, subcultural symbolism and expressions of personal narrative and identity in popular image traditions. In 2020 a book based upon his research will be published. n

House Music

One of the high spots of the Senior School year is the annual House Music competition. The event is designed to engender a really positive house spirit with all members of

each of the four senior houses, Years 9 to 13, rehearsing and performing together. The competition provides an enjoyable evening of musical entertainment. Each of the four houses perform three items together and all the arrangements are devised by the pupils themselves. The first

item is for small groups and the second is for ensembles. Finally, in item 3, all members of each house danced and sang their chosen house song. Once again New Hall was packed with parents and returning Old Chigwellians, such is the popularity of the event. The entire evening showcased a good

CHARITY

Chigwell School’s Charity Runners Just under 100 Chigwell School parents, staff, and Old Chigwellians ran in the Royal Parks Half Marathon for charity again this year. The team had a wonderful day running in the capital and the race took the athletes on a spectacular route past many of London’s most iconic sights. All the hard work and fun saw them raise just over £87,000 for Cancer Research UK. The Chigwell team organiser, Gill Punt, commented that it was superb to see so many of our Chigwell community come together for an exhilarating and exhausting event which has raised such a staggering total again for such an important cause. Selena Colmer, the Senior Manager Sports at Cancer Research UK, said, “Every year Chigwell School come out in force and fundraise enthusiastically for CRUK with a huge range of events that engages everyone: staff, alumni, governors, parents and pupils. Congratulations to each and every one of you who have taken part in an event. Whatever you

have done – pulled on a pair of running shoes or supported someone else’s challenge, you are making a difference. You are helping Cancer Research UK to save lives and improve quality of life. Thank you all for your support and every penny you raise is helping us to make faster progress towards our goal of three in four people surviving cancer by 2034.” n

Eren Pars Cup Match The annual Eren Pars memorial football match was fiercely contested once more between our Year 12 and the Year 13 students. Eren died from cancer on 25th May 2012 three years after leaving Chigwell. His parents and the School inaugurated the match between the two sixth form teams in his memory and this year it was won by only one goal, by the Year 13 side.

This was after two successive Year 12 victories. Mr and Mrs Pars generously gave money to the School to be donated to the charity of the choice of the winners, and this year the Down’s Syndrome Association was selected. Deputy Headmaster, Mr David Gower, commented: “The boys not only had a good game of football but also knew that they helped to uphold the memory of Eren at the School.” n 10 | 11

Biennial Staff Panto Chigwell Staff took to the stage to raise money for charity in a version of Jack and the Beanstalk. The staff panto contained the usual mix of slapstick comedy, audience participation and in-jokes that was greatly appreciated by the two packed houses. Sixth Form Drama scholars Immy Peck, Rosie

Singha and Emma Jones bravely undertook to direct the twenty or so members of staff and, through ticket sales and the generosity of the audiences, over ÂŁ2000 was raised for Haven House and Smiles with Grace, both local charities. Deputy Head David Gower who played the villain commented that it was amazing to see what could be achieved in such a short rehearsal period and was delighted with the amount of money raised. n

St. Paul’s Cathedral We are immensely proud of our Chapel Choir for their performance of Evensong at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral. Evensong is a free and open service where visitors from all over the world come to experience a moment of serenity. More than six hundred were there to hear our choir’s glorious sound. It is always an

honour to be invited to sing in this world famous Cathedral with its magnificent acoustic sound. Director of Music, Howard Ebden said ‘There are exquisite moments at the end of musical phrases, listening to the notes reverberate around the nave.” This year, the Chapel Choir sang Like as the Hart by Herbert Howells, along with his setting of Psalm 26 and Charles Villiers Stanford’s Evening Canticles in A, op 12. n

Primary Schools’ Music Festival More than 100 children from local Essex schools spent an entire day at Chigwell School for 2019’s Prep and Primary Music Festival for children 7-11. They took part in a variety of workshops, from music technology, song-writing, to introductory string experiences. Parallel to this, children had a day of orchestral coaching, culminating in a late afternoon celebratory concert. Director of Music, Howard Ebden

remarked how harmoniously the day’s events blended together. It presented the children a chance to try out a new instrument, and it gave our own Music Scholars the opportunity to introduce and encourage their initial attempts. Sessions were led by our music professionals including former students, who came back to share their expertise. James Botcher, choral lay clerk at York Minster, led percussion coaching and displayed his unique beat-boxing talents. Rhea Gupta, Clare College Cambridge Choral Scholar, inspired enthusiastic children to compose original music. At the

end of the concert, the children formed one big choir to sing Julian Lennon’s song, a plea to

save the planet, ‘Saltwater’ and ‘This is the Greatest Show’ from ‘The Greatest Showman.’ n

Junior School Concert The Michaelmas Term Junior School Concert was one of the strongest yet, featuring music from eleven of the larger ensembles. Music ranged from a wonderful display of skill and technique in Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance from the Junior Percussion Ensemble; Haydn’s Finale from The Bird Quartet by the String Septet; Sticks and Tricks from the Junior Drumline; Abraham’s Woza Wena from the Modern Music Ensemble. In addition, we

had excellent and vibrant performances from the Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs under the direction of Mr Joel Goodman and Ms Susie Proctor. A medley of show stoppers from The Lion King from the enormous Intermediate Orchestra finished off what was a spectacular evening of music from the younger pupils in the School. The Director of Music, Mr Howard Ebden, commented on how proud he was to be making such brilliant music with such young and happy minds and went on to congratulate the team spirit which this Music Department engenders among pupils and staff. n

Candlelight Service A big thank you to everyone who helped us fill St. Mary’s Church, Chigwell for our ‘Christmas by Candlelight’ Service. The Chapel Choir sang a moving version of Once in Royal David’s City, along with Joubert’s There is no Rose, Part’s Bogoroditse Djevo, and Masters in the Hall by Willcocks. This year we were joined by two Junior School girls’ choirs; one

singing Bullock’s Scot’s Nativity and the other, Beck’s Someone Told the Geese. Parents, staff and guests joined together to sing favourite Christmas carols with organ accompaniment by Mr Simon Winters. The evening was woven together by Senior heads of Houses and the Headmaster, Michael Punt, reading through the story of the Nativity. We appreciate the generosity of St Mary’s for hosting our service. Money was collected to support the ‘Streets2Homes’ charity. n 14 | 15

Barcelona Football Tour Fifty Chigwell School footballers took part in a development tour to Barcelona. Staying in the coastal resort of Salou, the group trained at the Salou Football Complex on 3G pitches. As always the highlight was the trip to the Camp Nou stadium where everyone was amazed and inspired by the trophies, changing rooms, and entire stadium. Over the course of the five-day visit,

the footballers took part in four training sessions, one self-conducted, as well as two training sessions with the Catalan Coaching federation and one with the La Liga side, Espanyol CF. The pupils took part in two fixtures and the standard of opposition was very good and all eight matches were extremely competitive. All members of the touring party had plenty of football over the five days and there was a dramatic improvement in all, especially their understanding

of the game. The group was complemented on its behaviour on many occasions during the

tour and were great ambassadors for their school both on and off the pitch. n

Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Eight Year 12 students completed their DofE Gold Canoe Training expedition in South Wales.

The first day was focused on paddling skills, rescue training and navigation which was carried out on Llangorse Lake on the edge of the Black mountains. Evenings were spent with lectures on camp craft
