Headmaster’s Letter to Parents

April 2021

Dear Parents I hope you have had a happy Easter and, like many of us, are looking forward to the term ahead. Despite the restrictions, I am delighted that various activities have taken place over the holidays and I hope there will be many more opportunities for pupils to be actively involved outside the classroom over the coming weeks. Best wishes Michael Punt

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh The School marked the sad passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh with the flags at half-mast. We express our gratitude for the establishment of the DofE award scheme that has taught generations of Chigwell students about outdoor skills, resilience and team work, while making a difference to the community.

This is so that beliefs about concepts such as “natural”, “homemade”, and “fried” can be considered equally to nutritional information like calories, salt, and saturated fat content. We recently hosted a ‘Meet the Future’ talk with Natasha Gandhi, a former Chigwell Student, who is in the final year of studying for her doctorate in Applied Psychology at Warwick University. Congratulations to Sahib (IVth Form) who starred in To Topknot or Not. The film tells the story of Jag, a fourteen year old Sikh boy, who grapples with the decision as to whether he should cut his hair to fit in with his friends or wear a turban to honour his family’s values.

DofE Bronze Award Led by Mr Andrew Bewick, Head of Outdoor Pursuits, we congratulate all our students who recently completed the Bronze DofE expedition. They learnt the practical skills needed to independently navigate a 15k hike and undertook camp craft activities such as pitching tents and cooking. They also developed skills such as group management, collaboration and resillence. Mr Bewick was impressed by how quickly the groups got up to speed, given the impact of lockdown over the past twelve months and praised all involved for completing the award. Girls’ Football Coaching Course

Cricket Success for Sally

During the Easter break, girls from UII, LII and UI attended Chigwell’s first ever girls’ Easter football camp on our new 3G pitch. They learnt new skills such as passing, control and running with the ball. The girls were fully engaged with the fun skills and games sessions and particularly enjoyed the shooting and finishing to goal. The course has been a great introduction to the summer term, which is flooded with girls’ football fixtures. With girls’ football growing again this year, it bauds well for the future. A big thank you to Mr Steven Moore who worked with the students over the three days.

We are delighted to say that Sally (UVth) has been asked to be part of the Sunrisers Regional cricket Emerging Players Programme for 2021. She took part in four trials over ten hours of cricket (including a session at Lords), against the best under 19s from Middlesex, Essex and Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire, We are very proud of this recognition – well done Sally! “Sally has worked very hard over the past few years and I can see why she has been rewarded! This is the start of good things for her!” – Mr Frank Griffith, Head of Cricket
