A conversation with

ELENA CARDONE BUILDING AN EMPIRE

The Queen of her Empire, Elena has designed, constructed and protected a life outside of the ordinary. She has inspired a legion of women and men to create their own empires; lives that are truly fulfilling and beyond the average. She counts her current job as her most important one – Chief Family Officer, where she is a loving mother, fierce wife and loyal friend.

Elena, what do you believe in? I believe in Spirituality, and I believe I can not be destroyed even though this body can be destroyed. So to me, honor integrity, love; those are the things that I am bringing with me wherever I go next. That’s what I’m working on in this lifetime; setting myself up for the next lifetime. I think in the future. But these are conversations that not everyone wants to talk about.. You lived through a successful acting career. How did you transition from being an actress to being a spiritual individual? In 1991 I moved to Los Angeles to become an actress and a model and mainly to escape New Orleans. I had kind of gone the wrong path so I went to L.A. to straighten myself up and become a better person. In the year 2000, I decided to give up the use of drugs. I was never a drug addict but I was a recreational drug user. So after a very successful acting career I decided to try something new and I thought to myself “What is life like without any drugs or alcohol, and who do I have to be or become; what is that person like that can get me to the next level? ”. After this conscious decision life completely turned around because now I had the confidence in a social situation to be good enough; to just being me without having to depend on a substance to make me feel good. Now I just depended on me and who I am, and how am I interested enough and that’s how I began to grow into a spiritual being and started to figure out who I am rather than what I was avoiding and couldn’t confront; now I started confronting myself. Who were the most influential people in your life to become who you are today? There are three influential people in my life. My parents and my husband. My mother and father were my very first role models. My mother was the breadwinner in our home so I learned so much about being a financially strong woman. She taught me about resilience and how even if everything was falling apart, you can still keep it together. My father

opened up my tough side. It was no secret, I was a daddy’s girl from the very beginning. My father taught me how to shoot, and play sports. He taught me how to be active in this life. He taught me to never be intimidated by a man and that I can hold my own around men. My father is where I got my never settle mentality. His greatest lesson: challenge yourself and think beyond limitations for they do not exist. Needless to say, my husband Grant Cardone is my biggest mentor. I am his biggest fan, he’s taught me so much. This man pushes me to my limits and it isn’t always pretty, but I appreciate it because he wants me to reach my full potential. I watch Grant every single day, and every single day, he influences me to be better, do better. He has earned my unshakable trust and devotion for life. What’s the biggest challenge you have overcome to get where you are today? So when the financial crisis and economic collapse happened in 2008 I asked my husband Grant “what does this mean?’’ and looks at me and says “this means we are going to die”. At that point I said “Excuse me? Do I look like death to you? I am pregnant with our first child. I was like “no, no, no, no ,no” wrong thing to say to me; I don’t die, so you go to your office and stay there until you figure this thing out because I’m not dying. So he went to his office and wrote his first book “if you are not first you’re last”. He wrote that book in three hours and after that he comes back and says “This is a book, it is not going to make us rich but I know what I have to do and I will never make you worry again. At that moment it was like nuclear devastation going off in our house. We were under the biggest lawsuit we’ve ever been in. His business as he knew it was over, the economy collapsed and I’m pregnant with our first child. That’s when I had to look at the drawing board and make a decision and that’s when I decided to trade in my acting career in order to trade up. I decided at that moment I was pushing all my chips on him. He had a business that was financially buyable and I knew that if I could back him with my visions, my

26

ideas, supporting him for whatever he needed to get this new thing up and running, I was all in on that, I was all in on us. It was the biggest risk I had to overcome as a woman in my life because you don’t think I had the thought “never depend on a man, oh, here’s the guy than in 10 years he’s going to cheat on you when you age”, you know all these things like you’re giving up your career, you’re such a sell out or now you’re a golddigger and you’re being taken care of! I had all that going on in my head! I had to just accept it and stood there knowing that I am strong enough, I’m powerful enough in any situation in my life to land in my own two feet. It could happen that I could be extremely humiliated but no one is taking me down. I “always” win, excuse my language! I’m a winner and I will never be a victim no matter what happens to me, I am not a victim! Now the irony of the entire situation is that my whole life I thought I had to be independent and never depend on a man, and now I depend on a man and he depends on me. And I have found more strength and power as a woman though a man! These same words would have made me want to vomit 20 years ago! And now I sit here and say them and own them and it is what it is! How does building your empire and love correlate? This is what I talk about in my book “Build an Empire” - Find the one you trust and build an empire. Love is not a given, love is something you create. I don’t have this “I’m madly in love with my husband feeling every second of the day. I don’t live in a fairytale, if I want that feeling I have to create it. So when that fairytale feeling wears off, you have to have the trust and then the love comes from hitting your goals and your targets and you fight battles side by side, and you have each other’s back and you accomplish victories together; that’s real love. Love to me is, you make me a better person, I make you a better person and we freaking conquer the world “that’s love”. Elena Cardone - Author Build an Empire - How to have it all.

DON’T BE AVERAGE. GIVE YOURSELF A CHALLENGE AND GO CREATE A DYNASTY. THIS IS WHAT YOU WERE BORN TO DO!

VERONICA ESPINEL

BEAUTY REFLECTS IN KINDNESS OF THE HEART

I am passionate about helping others through my work and I realized that this is how I get all the motivation I need to keep going.

T

he very first thing you feel when meeting Veronica is warmth. There is a very special energy around her that makes everyone feel at ease when you meet her. She is not only a successful business leader, but she’s also a great support to her local community on causes that matter. She was born in a small town in Ecuador where people coexist in harmony and living in community is possible. These aspects of growing up were imperative as a child because that is how Veronica learned to empathize with the needs of others. Veronica established her residence in the United States only 7 years ago and started to further her specialized her studies in business, aesthetics and beauty. Along the way, becoming a savvy business woman through various endeavors. Now with the great satisfaction in the level of excellence achieved at Red Market Miami located at the Bal Harbour Shops, Veronica is truly living her passion. Veronica, what do you attribute the basis of your core values? I grew up in a very loving family, I truly believe that was the basis of my spiritual formation and core values. I always relied on my skills and my effort to forge a profession and apply it to the workplace with ethics and enthusiasm. I feel this is the reason why today I’m committed to activities of a social nature. Having a sense of family outside my own is something that deeply fulfills me; the time I share with someone who needs a hand is truly rewarding. As a child did you have dreams that match your reality today? It’s not that I wasn’t able to envision my current life; but as a child I wasn’t clear that I would be assisting others through what I do. However; helping people and contributing to making their lives better has always been within me.

The beauty industry has been a natural path for me. Women always trusted me with giving them tips on how to make them feel pretty and that is a great feeling! I just love that!

look on the outside. Beauty reflects in kindness of the heart; I strive to provide the tools for women (as well as men) to feel confident to project their inner qualities and to shine!.

The beauty industry is challenging, what were the main reasons you decided to be in it?

Social media is a big distraction and makes it easy to get lost in comparisons, envy and despair. I believe extremes are dangerous and we must work on ourselves as much in the inside as we do in our external looks.

There is so much about the beauty industry I love. The opportunity to be a positive influence and support for women and for them to see the best in themselves is really is the main reason. The emotional impact beauty and wellness have on my clients is immensely gratifying to me, and I get to see it everyday, I cannot ask for more. Miami is a great City, I feel very fortunate to be here where life has allowed me to make a home for myself and my inseparable companion and inspiration, my son Paulo. He is the reason for everything I do. And just like in any industry in a growing City, yes there are tough aspects. But when you are driven, consistent, and passionate about what you do, nothing can stop you!

Being successful comes with many responsibilities. What were the challenges you had to overcome to ensure a balance between family and your business? I married and became a mother at a very young age. After my separation I was on my own; I went through my fair share of hardships and had many obligations. I knew I had to succeed for me but especially for my son, that motivated me and kept me on the right track. It was challenging for me to maintain balance in the early years, but now that I look back, I know every difficult day I went through was absolutely worth it. As a young woman entrepreneur, do you see yourself becoming an advocate for beauty and women empowerment through your business? Absolutely! Beauty is not only about how you

28

Could you share with our readers, what are you currently doing to support your community? Through my business I get to meet a lot of amazing people involved in wonderful efforts in different arenas. Together we are constantly finding ways to collaborate and partner with these individuals and their organizations. This year we have supported The Adrienne Arsht Center, The Little Lighthouse Foundation and The Jack Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, amongst others. I have been personally involved with these organizations for several years. As I grow, I find myself devoted to causes that primarily involve support for the arts, children’s education and issues that directly affect women.

MAYRA JOLI, ESQ. YOUR AMERICAN DREAM STARTS HERE

As one of South Florida’s most active immigration attorneys, Ms. Joli has accumulated a remarkable number of victories on behalf of her clients in various immigration courtrooms. She has litigated cases throughout the entire United States.

B

orn in Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic. Mayra grew up in a small neighborhood called Cristo Rey (Christ the King). “I always had big dreams. I have seen every moment in life as a stepping stone to advance myself and as a moment to be enjoyed. I remember every aspect of my childhood and young adulthood as the most precious time of my life,” Joli says. I always thought I wanted to be an architect. I loved to draw pictures of anything with a piece of carbon on the hallway walls in the patio of our childhood home. My mother complained I was going to be a starving artist, which was her perception of people who painted. I lived with my head in the clouds and relied on my art as the solution to cope with any adversity in life. When I attended a required pre-university meeting with a vocational counselor, the person determined I was not architect material. She said I was better suited to be a nurse. Not knowing how or where to direct my attention and certainly knowing for sure I did not want to be a nurse, I decided to forget about the whole art thing and started college. Sometime in the early 1980’s, I watched a movie called “The Verdict” starring Paul Newman, with Spanish subtitles. The plot in the movie and the impact of it was so clear that at that point I decided, that is it! I will be an attorney! Yup, it was a movie! I am an attorney today, thanks to Paul Newman. Successful women usually go through a series of life challenges before they become accomplished. Was there ever a time when you felt like giving up? If so, how did you bounce back? Short answer…I have never given up! I don’t know the feeling of quitting or to stop believing in myself. I am a woman of strong beliefs and do not get shaken by anything. If at any point I was/am/will feel inclined to give out or give in, I just change my mind in a more positive way.

Mayra, we understand that you married really young. Was your husband part of your career success and how was he essential to your life path? Ha! thanks for the compliment! Relatively, when compared to “the old times” and “new wave” I was a late bloomer. I looked one generation behind in age because mileage can really ruin the appearance of a good motor vehicle…and I had very low mileage, for a 1965 model. Nonetheless, “mi gringo” as I call my husband is only 7 years older than me. We have been together since the ‘90s. We have a super handsome, super loving, super educated, 14 year old son, Ishmael “mi dindo.” And yes, behind all my success, my husband has been the greatest man who has helped build every aspect of my life and my career.

You have built one of the most successful Immigration Law Firms in Miami and have helped thousands of people in their process. Why immigration law? I’ve always worn my heart on my sleeve and cheered for the underdog. In the immigration law practice, I found a way to translate that energy into helping people. You will see me at the detention facility...in my heels...smiling and doing the hard leg work for those who cannot speak for themselves. Many of our cases are very complicated and time consuming. Sometimes, the work is like solving a puzzle. Like a Rubik’s cube. I enjoy finding ways to win, especially with unorthodox “out of the box” thinking. Helpling families stay together is a thrill I never get tired of. Besides, I enjoy the battle, which makes winning for our clients even sweeter. Would like to share with our readers what drove you to run for congress in 2018, and would you run again and why? There were several reasons I ran for congress. I wanted to continue doing what I do best, which is to serve, but on a greater platform.

30

Also, I thought I could bring an honest voice to the political conversation, independent of some of the extreme views of the major political parties and special interest groups which tend to run “the swamp” of government. That is why I ran as a non-party affiliated candidate. Additionally, my experience with the media revealed a level of disingenuity in reporting the news that I wanted to correct. Politics and the media are often both fraught with deceitfulness, despite the claimed “good faith” of politicians and “independence” of the press. I wanted to break through all the false narratives and deliver a message of truth, optimism and hope. While running my congressional campaign, I encountered the good, the bad, and the ugly...a lot of bad and ugly. Nonetheless, I enjoyed every minute of it because I had my family and friends with me and it became a personal affair, a matter of pride. Our campaign inspired thousands of people who believed and still believe in the principles I espoused during the campaign and share the same basic values of individual responsibility, reverence for one’s faith, respect for one’s family, and veneration for our country, the United States of America...the greatest country on Mother Earth. Will I run again? I never say never!! Why? From the carbon marked hallway walls in Cristo Rey to the halls of the U.S. Congress...why not?

A conversation with

ANNA STEPCHENKO

HELPING PEOPLE DISCOVER THEIR UNIQUE POWER WITHIN Anna Stepchenko’s main focus when working with people is to help them reveal gifts they were born with. By applying the Human Design system in her practice, Anna gears people towards discovering their unique gifts, strengths, specific roles and correct direction in life.

I

first came to the US as an exchange student back in 2006 after becoming a finalist of The Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program, where I competed with thousands of other students for this prestigious scholarship award. It was my childhood dream. After spending 1 year in the U.S., my mind completely expanded and I got to both imbibe the myriad of cultures and flavors of values, dialects, and foods from all over the world, and also share my own culture, language and world views with my new friends, teachers, and colleagues. My life changed forever by this experience. I planned to finish my studies in International Economics in my motherland, Ukraine, and return to the U.S. Once I was back in 2011, I got swirled by the field of real estate, studying the ABCs with top brokers and experts and providing my services to people from all over the world. For the last few years you have been intensively studying and practicing Human Design, how did it influence and inspire you? When I was standing at the crossroads deliberating on the endless topic “what’s next?” the answer came from the Human Design System which is undoubtedly one of the most precious gifts I have ever received. Soon after noticing positive and qualitative changes in my life it became clear to me that not only did I need to incorporate this system into my daily routine, but also master it professionally in order to share it at a high and deep level with others. I always felt that pursuits of stereotyped goals society imposes on people get them carried away in directions which are often far away from their soul purpose. I was surprised to learn in my own Human Design experiment how impactful my specific aura is and how to surrender to my inner authority in order to avoid situations which would not be useful for my growth and instead, engage in those which would increase my conscious awareness. I surely have become more peaceful and determined as my friends and family have told me. I also gained more understanding of my own purpose and what role I play in this complex mosaic of life. Hence, I got inspired to use my inherent gifts in influencing others and have already received many testimonials

from people who have gained deep insights and “aha” moments in the answers they were seeking after consulting with me. My own Human Design helped me map up their best genetic traits and gave them the courage to explore their gifts. What is Human Design’s core focus? I’d like to start off by emphasizing that our energy is the primary driving force of the vehicle we navigate on our daily basis “the body”, therefore, such energy must be invested correctly in order to produce maximum returns. Using the authority of the mind, meaning our power to make decisions, not only creates resistance but also adds frustration, bitterness, anger and disappointment in our lives. Why does it happen? This is where the Human Design system comes into play. Our mind has no direct connection to even one of the 4 body motors that constantly, or not (depending on your unique design) produce energy to turn thoughts and ideas directly into manifestation. This is how unequipped our mind is to be relied upon in the decision-making process. Human Design system always refers to the “true self” and “not-self” where the true self is our body-centered intelligence versus the conditioned mental programming of the not-self. Based on the explanation above, does this mean that our mind is no longer needed? The mind is absolutely needed, but it has to be used correctly. One of my teachers compared the mind to a librarian who is very knowledgeable and knows the exact location of the books and files he manages. Does it mean the librarian must be a CEO? Not at all. All it means is that he possesses enough qualities to collect, process and conceptualize information. How do you perceive Human Design? My own perception of Human Design incorporates 3 keywords: awareness, uniqueness, and quality. By designating our body and mind with their appropriate roles we start

32

shifting and expanding our own awareness followed by receiving a unique experience that transcends our life to a whole new level of quality. Human Design is undoubtedly a very versatile study comprised of so many layers and angles making it the science of differentiation and self-discovery. It’s a synthesis of astrology, quantum physics, genetics, biochemistry, the Chinese I Ching, Kabbalah, and the chakra system. How can such a complex study be applied in our daily lives? Regardless of its complexity and depth there are 3 core components: type, strategy, and authority, and they can be instantly applied upon our session. There are 4 main types of human beings: Generators (The Builders), Projectors (The Guides), Manifestors (The Initiators), and Reflectors (The Discerners). Each and every one of us was born with a certain type that stays with us throughout our entire life. Using our personal Strategy and Authority helps us navigate our lives in an authentic, self-empowering way letting our thinking minds become objective observers versus ultimate decision makers. What advice would you like to give to women who are in search of their right career and perfect relationship in life? Dear women, my best advice for you is to be truthful and honest with yourself. What is it that you really want? Switch your mind off for a second, feel it, embrace it and afford yourself to go for it! Don’t let illusionary fear of failure stop you by settling for less than your heart desires. Going into the unknown is always risky yet so worth the try! Sometimes our biggest gifts come in ugly packages, and it’s only up to us to perceive them either as dead ends or as a divine driving force to grow, to overcome obstacles and to shine like a star! Together we can map out the best route for you to decondition from all the limiting beliefs, fears, and blockages that keep you away from experiencing your true self and the abundant range of opportunities the Universe has in store for you.

A conversation with

JOSE ISAAC PERES

At the outset of his transformative career in development, self-made Brazilian billionaire José Isaac Peres quickly learned that while it was gratifying to sell a product, it was infinitely more rewarding to bring happiness to people.

T

hat mantra subsequently formed the basis of Peres’ focus and drive -- fueling his meteoric rise within the real estate industry and serving as the inspiration behind the award-winning, highly sought-after projects he would go on to create. From an early age, Peres – born in the Ipanema neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro - was recognized as a Phenom and a trailblazer…sharply attuned to the market and its intricacies. It was while he was studying economics at the Universidade de Brasilia that he started his first company, Veplan, which became the first real estate company to be listed on the Brazilian Stock Exchange. Peres then went on to become the founder and CEO of Multiplan Empreedimentos Imobilarios, which, today, is the largest Brazilian retail real estate company and one of South America’s most respected development firms. Over the course of the last four decades, Peres’ hands-on involvement with Multiplan has yielded more 35,000 residential units throughout more than 350 projects in Brazil and beyond, as well as one of the most renowned shopping mall portfolios in Latin America. Now, Peres has his sights on Miami Beach, where he lives part-time. His latest boutique condominium, 57 Ocean, has just broken ground on Millionaire’s Row… and it’s already making an indelible impression on high-net-worth consumers worldwide.

Here, Peres gives CHIC Miami Magazine an exclusive look into the life and plans that will shape the future of this iconic enclave and his vision as a real estate mastermind developer. Mr. Peres, can you share with our readers how you started your career as a real estate developer and what do you attribute your success to? I was in my early 20’s, studying economics, when I realized I had an aptitude for real estate. I first sold a friend’s apartment for more than expected. Shortly thereafter, I purchased land and sold my first building in a span of just 15 days - and while it was still in the planning stages. I may have been new to the industry, but I was quickly learning how to navigate it. I then took a leap and started my own real estate business, Veplan, which went public in 1971.

That was the same year I built my first shopping mall in Iberapuera. Collectively, those initial experiences gave me an immeasurable understanding of the industry and its inner workings. I was always looking ahead, thinking about the long-term, and envisioning a project’s potential impact on a global scale no matter its location. When did you start to appreciate a sense of architecture, good design and top quality in construction? I have always had a love for architecture. It’s been a passion of mine since childhood and, for that matter, the reason why I’ve been consistently focused on ensuring that the best team of architects, interior designers, and contractors are assembled on every project. 57 Ocean is no exception. When we set out to develop this building, we embarked on a painstaking curation process…soliciting five of the world’s best architecture firms to determine which one would be the perfect fit. Over the course of your career, you have developed over 35,000 residential condo units in over 350 projects within Brazil and South Florida. Why did you decide to return to Miami at this time? When I decided it was time to return to Miami, I refused to settle for anything less than a legacy project…one that would lay the foundation for a larger real estate platform in the city I’ve loved since I first built the Il Villaggio condominium two decades ago. In the same way that Il Villaggio was a landmark project in the ‘90’s, changing the landscape of Ocean Drive. I want 57 Ocean to be an iconic building on Millionaire’s Row. Already, this project is one of the most talked about in South Florida, singled-out by high-end buyers worldwide for its array of holistic wellness amenities and services. Your projects focus on sustainability. Could you expand on what are the important factors you considered when creating 57 Ocean condo? I always envisioned a quiet, sustainably-built contemporary building that emphasized healthy living right on the Atlantic.

36

The challenge was to locate a piece of land that highlighted the city’s best assets: Access to major traffic arteries, direct placement on the beach, and enough space to offer owners numerous ways to live a full and well-balanced life. 57 Ocean catalyzed that vision on a 220-foot oceanfront site, bringing to life a one-of-a-kind boutique condominium that is connected to nature in meaningful ways – most especially through its use of natural materials, elegant architecture, intelligent design, indigenous landscaping, and the most coveted amenity in the world: direct access to the ocean. This project will also be a Gold LEED-certified residential building, which is yet another reflection of how we continue adhering to the highest standards of sustainability and craftsmanship -- from the selection of top- quality materials, to the smart design choices that will positively impact the surrounding community for generations to come. You are currently in the middle a competitive real estate market, when you first began this project, did you face any challenges and what did you do to overcome to ensure success? Hurdles are always going to be a factor when you conceptualize a new, high-end residential project, especially one that’s sited on the water - from securing the best location to crafting the most intricate designs. The process is a meticulous one, but we pride ourselves on being extremely thorough. We launched 57 Ocean last October in the midst of a softer market, but we have tremendous confidence in Miami and Miami Beach, specifically. There is always going to be a desire among luxury buyers to live on the ocean – especially in a resort-like setting such as this one…an enclave that focuses on wellness and offers a myriad of top amenities that promote and facilitate this curated lifestyle. As of today, 57 Ocean is one of only a few condominiums being built in Miami Beach, so the appeal to have access to that kind of new, high-quality construction is considerable for domestic and international homebuyers alike. I’m positive that when are finished building 57 Ocean, people are going to say, ‘Wow, it’s better than I ever imagined.’ I’m thrilled for what’s ahead.

BEHAR & FONT

B

ehar Font and Partners, P. A. was founded by registered architects,Robert Behar and Javier Font, each with over thirty-five years of architectural design, project management and development experience for a wide variety of project types that encompass all phases of commercial, hospitality and residential development. In addition to the practice of architecture, Behar Font’s principal’s involvement in the community entails serving as board members to the City of Miami’s Urban Design Review Board, the City of Coral Gables’ Planning and Zoning Board, as well as multiple non-for-profit organizations. Miami has always been known for its art deco and iconic architecture. How does your firm continue this legacy, but also contributes to the expanding development of Miami? Many cities are identified by their architecture—especially the skylines, whose silhouettes give a lasting expression. In Miami, we have some very impressive buildings that contribute to our skyline and the city’s identity. When we take on a new project, we strive to maintain consistency with our design philosophy. It is our fundamental belief that every project shall not only be unique and sensible to its contextual surroundings, but it must also create an identity that will last beyond our time.

It is impressive to witness the magnitude and diversity of projects you have developed in your careers as Behar Font but could you tell us about the core values and philosophy of your firm? From the inception of Behar Font & Partners, P. A., we made a conscious decision to diversify our work amongst numerous sectors of the development industry. We understood that although architecture and development tend to be cyclical businesses, these cycles typically occur in individual markets and some sectors may actually be very strong at the same time other sectors are struggling. This diversity we’ve committed to has not only guaranteed the longevity of our firm the past

29 years but has also given us experience in almost all architectural building types. To this end, we are currently involved in projects of almost every kind, such as condo high-rises, affordable housing, apartment buildings, retail centers, hotels, office buildings, and more. Robert and Javier, the uniqueness of your work has its own blueprint. What is that signature that makes Behar Font different from other architecture firms ? We are very passionate about architecture, we like to get very involved in every project and represent our work in a manner that is consistent with what we are known for. Many people will see our work and say, “Oh, that’s a Behar Font Project!”, and over the years we have developed that consistency that makes us who we are today. Even though all our projects are different, there’s always that signature that defines us. We don’t like to say we are better than anyone else, but what has been successful to us is that, with limited budgets, we have produced excellent work. As a firm, that is the strongest asset we have had because we understand architecture, we understand construction, and we understand development and everything that is required to achieve great results. That is our uniqueness—we do things differently than other architecture firms. It is easy to draw a pretty picture, but if that pretty picture doesn’t work, it stays on paper. When we draw a pretty picture, we are aware of what it will take to bring that project to fruition. We are stunned by the your latest project “Okan Tower” in Downtown Miami. Could you share with our readers how did you decide on the architectural structure for this mega highrise condo building? It’s a tremendous honor to be involved with this project. Rarely does a project come along with such profound significance. Before we started putting ideas together, our team researched important and influential Turkish images and symbolic references for inspiration.

40

From the beginning, the design of this building has been an evolution of poetic imagery. Our goal was to blend the two cultures and, as such, the tulip was incorporated into our design because of its beauty and majestic form. Mixed with the vibrant culture of Miami, the design of the structure began taking shape and creating a powerful design statement. Standing at 72 stories and 895 feet tall, it will be among the tallest buildings south of New York City. The Okan Tower will be very instrumental in creating an image that will always be associated with Miami. What advice would you give as professionals to our readers on how to become a successful individual? In our opinion, one of the main reasons why we’ve been successful is that we’ve never been afraid to take on a challenge. Architecture is a difficult career in the sense that when you start you have very little experience and it takes many years to get an opportunity to design a great building and even longer to see it to completion. This is why you see architects whose work does not become recognized until they are 60 or 70 years old. We have been successful in being hired for projects for which we had little experience. It is a monumental task to sit across the table from a person and tell them, “We’ve never design a hotel before, but we are going to design the best hotel you have ever seen”, that is how we’ve achieved our success—not being afraid to believe in our abilities and taking the steps that are required to do the things we’ve never done. That’s what has gotten us to all these sectors and to where we are today. It obviously gets easier after you’ve had some experience; it is easy to tell someone, “These are the last five hotels we designed!” However, doing your first one is the toughest one; you just can’t be afraid to do it, you just have to do it! Basically, you have to take chances!

A conversation with Hessam’s process is intuitive by nature. He approaches a canvas with no direct idea of the composition, palette or artistic fundamentals. He comes from a place in his heart, a place of emotion wherein a feeling is expressed.

B

orn in the ancient center of the Persian Empire in the town of Shiraz, Iran in 1951 the roots of an enlightening heritage are deep within Hessam Abrishami. It is indisputable that the abundant history and enriching ways of this great land have upheld a legacy of traditions both cultural and artistic. The impact of such flourishing surroundings is immeasurable. He starts with a single stroke of color applied to the canvas. He stays within the emotion he desires to share, holding that feeling in his heart. As he applies the colors that best express those feelings, the form of the work begins to emerge. Figures come to life, places are created, and a painting is completed. Hessam has often stated that he feels his mind would cloud the process and the purity in his art can only come from a place of unrestrained emotion. You cannot analyze or invent emotional imagery, it has to be experienced with the heart. His work has evolved through a long process, from his traditional training in school to the rejection of the classical processes which appeared more abstract in his early years, eventually emerging as the work we know today. Hessam, could you tell us about the people you met along your life and decisions you made that shaped your journey.? My journey began in Iran when I was in the eighth grade; my art teacher asked the class to draw anything we wanted. This was the very first time I have ever attempted to draw. “We were free to pursue our own interests in Mr. Moezzi’s class. That day I recreated one of his portrait drawings, by hand of course, and turned it in as an assignment. He took quite a long time to examine the piece. I expected an angry response, possibly accusing me of plagiarism. He took quite a long time to examine the piece. I expected an angry response, possibly accusing me of plagiarism. Instead he simply said “you are better than me”, and I received and “A”. This may have been the turning moment that shifted my passion into obsession. As an artist, what inspires your work? The way I think, the way I feel, my philosophy about life and society inspire me and it shows in my work.

Your practice is informed by many different stylistic and cultural traditions. How would you define your artistic style? My technical style is Abstract expressionism. My two strongest influences are movement and color. The movements of a female or male figure specifically when dancing along with their expressions highly influenced me and my work. It is their body language that I paint. The world is beautiful and full of color. I see color as a language. It speaks to me and I talk back with my work. Different colors evoke different emotions in me.

44

HESSAM ABRISHAMI

Can you talk to us about your journey of study and the development of your very unique style? I try to be myself. When I am myself, it never looks like any other persons work. I try to work from my knowledge and my point of view and this makes me different from other artists. With my background coming from Iran, I have a different experience so it shapes me, it doesn’t mean it is better or worse than others, it’s just me! What do you hope the viewer will take away from your paintings? For anyone who is newly introduced to my work, I mention that behind my brushstrokes is over 40 years of experience. People will always find elements that they can relate to in my work. And every day they would find something new in the painting. My paintings are a story I am telling. But a story that lets you fill in the blanks. Everyone will see something different and that is ok. There is no right or wrong just each individual’s interpretation.

What do you want people to know about Hessam Abrishami? I am no different than anyone else. I am just able to express myself using a canvas as well. Do you have a favorite painting within your collection, and if so why is this your favorite piece of work? Painting for me is very personal. The process is very personal. Each painting I create carries a part of my soul with it wherever it goes. So my favorite painting is always the most recent one I’ve completed. It is the closest to my heart at that moment. They may not all be masterpieces, but I love them all the same in that moment in time.

Any word of inspiration for those young artists who are trying to make their way in this industry? Experience as much art as you can. Visit museums, art galleries, exhibitions and art fairs. Creativity breeds creativity. Create all the time. Listen to your feelings and emotions. Be unafraid and let that show in your work. Follow that path and practice until your art flows from within you without forced effort. To view Hessam’s work visit: ABRA Gallery 2014 NE 155th Street. “IT IS TRULY A PLEASURE AND AN HONOR TO BE ABLE TO WORK HANDS ON WITH PEOPLE TO ELIMINATE PAIN AND EDUCATE THEM ABOUT THEIR BODIES”

JUANCARLOS MUGUERCIA Structural Integration & Yoga Therapy Practitioner 58

C H IC M IA M I

How I help clients reconnect with their bodies How were you introduced to Yoga Therapy & Structural Integration? I had been doing deep tissue massage for 8 years and did well the first 5 years. I worked at a spa full time and saw clients privately at their homes part time. After building up a big enough private practice, I left the spa and was just doing house calls full time. I was giving great massages and getting good feedback from my clients, so my clientele grew pretty quickly as the word got out. After a while I noticed that the deep tissue work was offering only very temporary changes for my clients and also for myself as I was getting my own weekly massages. I was kind of frustrated and looking for something more, I felt as if something was missing. Shortly after putting those thoughts out into the universe I was walking around the neighborhood and stumbled across a small yoga studio. I spoke briefly to the teacher and she invited me to come for a free class. It took me about a month to take her up on that free class, but after my first class I was hooked and started practicing yoga at least 5 times per week. I felt so amazing after every class, I could really feel my body opening up with how all the different poses would stretch my muscles and everyday I felt more and more limber. I could instantly feel the benefits of oxygenating my body with conscious deep breathing. I felt more alive than ever before. My body felt activated and limber. This also had an affect on my mental state, as my stiff body reflected a stiff and overactive mind. A few months into the yoga practice I did not only feel my body becoming limber, but also my mind. I could feel myself getting calmer and calmer, being more observant and less reactive. Yoga is a moving meditation and it was benefiting my life in many ways. I wanted to learn more and advance my practice so I decided to sign up for the next yoga teacher training to become a certified yoga instructor. During the yoga teacher training something clicked and I started using the yoga stretches in my massage sessions and having my clients breathe deeply and consciously throughout the sessions. I started getting incredible feedback immediately and my clients were leaving the sessions feeling much more limber and relaxed than before.

Incorporating all the different stretches and breathing techniques made a huge difference and the effects were lasting much longer than just a regular deep tissue massage. After about a year of teaching yoga and incorporating yoga therapy into my massage practice, one of my yoga teachers mentioned to me that there would be an advanced body work training that I might be interested in. At first I was skeptical because I would usually be disappointed with most trainings as they were always more of the same and I wouldn’t learn anything I didn’t already know, however this training on structural integration completely blew my mind. How does Structural Integration help people feel better? Structural integration works with the connective tissue (fascia) which is a web with multiple layers that holds all the muscles together. the container of the muscles, Think of it as the wetsuit of the body. Creating length in the fascia would make incredible structural changes and create alignment in the body that I was never able to achieve with just deep tissue and stretching. I had never seen anything like it and it changed the way I approached body work completely. In creating space in the connective tissue, the muscles really have room to let go and truly lengthen for very long lasting changes and better overall alignment. Can you explain how does Structural Integration work? The structural integration work focuses on realignment of our pelvis and spine along with the rest of our structure instead of just treating symptoms of misalignment (sore, tight and shortened muscles). This work gets to the root of the issue, which is always a structural one. With getting this work done on myself I was able to permanently eliminate chronic neck pain which I was only managing before with deep tissue massage and stretching, and I was able to provide these results for many of my clients, many of which were even considering back surgery. After this work they were able to completely heal and avoid surgeries doctors told them would be necessary and unavoidable.

How did you realize Structural Integration could be integrated with Yoga? I’ve always been one to integrate everything. I learn along the way so it was natural for me to combine these modalities, and the results were mind blowing. I was getting much faster and longer lasting results than ever before. In creating space in the connective tissue I am able to also create more length in the muscles so they are no longer short and pulling the structure out of alignment, in integrating these modalities it allows the body to remain in alignment. Also the conscious deep breathing in the sessions aids in bringing more oxygen to the muscles accelerating the healing process and allowing the release of tension and stress at a rapid rate, directing the client to dive into the area of discomfort and consciously let it go, creating length out of that shortened place intrinsically, with all areas of injury there is a disconnect so it is my job as a bodyworker to assist my clients in reconnecting with those areas which the body begins to guard creating shortness and chronic tension patterns , it is necessary to restore the energy flow to those areas. With just deep tissue massage you do not gain true body awareness, alignment or lasting length throughout the body. We must begin addressing the body holistically to invoke lasting change and expansion. It is truly a pleasure and an honor to be able to work hands on with people to eliminate pain and educate them about their bodies, helping them become more aware of how they are carrying themselves and their bodies through the day and watching for tension patterns while learning to simply be in their bodies moving organically, fluidly and pain free. Body awareness is key to living a pain free life. Pain is a huge distraction and will affect many areas of our life because when we are in pain it not only affects us but it affects everyone around us. It has been my life’s work to eliminate this distraction for thousands so they can focus on what they love and cherish, and I plan to continue serving all that I cross paths with on this beautiful journey. I feel that I have cracked the code to pain free living in our human vessels, and I want to share it with as many people as possible. How does Feng Shui work for those unfamiliar with it? Feng Shui is an ancient art form that has been utilized for centuries to help dynasties maintain their fortunes and happiness. It works with the natural forces of the universe and elements of nature to create balance and flow in all areas of one’s life. Living beautifully with modern Feng Shui as a lifestyle simply has taken the ancient principles and integrated them into the lives and environments of today. Its Philosophy is that our homes are a mirror of what’s going on within us . Our spaces are very different now being built in tall skyscrapers, very disconnected from the earth. Feng Shui will help connect your energy with the powerful energy of the universe to support your life to thrive. How does living in a Feng Shui inspired interior affect the overall energy of the person living in the space? When we are aligned and thriving within an environment that is matched to the nature of our true inner human design and heart’s desires, it opens up a huge opportunity to elevate your everyday living to a whole new level - it’s a true 360 degree approach to lifestyle. The interior becomes a work of art expressing your authentic soul-style.It is a holistic approach to deliberately designing your life, environment and how you live your life.. Being surrounded with artistry and beauty that reflects your essence will make you feel Joy, and when we Love with where we live, loving all life is greatly expanded. Elyse, could you expand on how you practice the life changing magic of modern Feng Shui to bring more Joy to your clients lives? The Feng Shui style I practice raises one’s vibrational consciousness and awareness. It also expands the heart chakra energy by integrating the right colors, elements, and directional placement of the furnishings and art with the specific elements designed for the individual. I have been trained in energy clearing and activation so each consultation sets in motion a new energetic pattern that helps my clients manifest their intentions and hearts desires. It is Life By Design - Feng Shui. As an intuitive channel, this gift assists the process of transmitting information to the client during the consultation for their spiritual evolution. Being trained in the shamanic Intuitive school of Feng Shui, then later in the classic method, and. after 30 years of working with people coast to coast, selling stuck properties, helping individuals launch purpose

driven businesses, and bringing people together in healthier relationships, I can say it totally works. I use the principles of both systems to help shift the energy and open up new pathways for my clients to experience their lives expanded, happier and more peaceful. What makes it Modern is simply the way it all is executed. The enhancements and cures are all installed as beautiful customized elements. The art and sacred objects all fit in with the overall design and empower the clients energy.

Once people become aware of a new expanded perspective of holistic luxury living, a beautiful transformation begins to take place. A new world opens up for most of our clients as they discover a higher understanding of who they really are and what they came here to do. In this awakening, there are numerous opportunities to create a more deliberate life of elevated experiences, in business ,relationships, personal health and wellness. When everything is operating with more alignment the magic can happen in your life.

What is the difference between average high end interiors and a truly curated soulful space?

What are the steps to take to begin this process if someone is interested in help so that they can live and work in more harmony with their uniquely designed environment and business?

Much of what we are seeing in the current interior design industry which I believe creates a cold impersonal feeling for the residents is the result of a basic disconnect. There’s a misalignment coming from both the client and the designer from what I have observed. The client isn’t connected to what they truly want or even like from a soul level, and the designer is not connecting to their clients on a very personal level, nor asking deeper questions other than the typical surface, visual and lifestyle questions. This occurs because the client is not involved in the process correctly from the beginning. Most design firms have lost the personal connection in operating as a big business. I do see the direction & trend in interior design bringing in more of the sacred so it evokes an emotion and provides a spiritual lift helping people feel they are truly living in a home designed for their soul. My company curates lifestyles, not just spaces. We are holistic in our approach and in order to do that we get to know our clients on a deeply personal level, in the process they get to know themselves on a deeper level. It’s a beautiful soul- inspired synergy relationship. Chad, how does the business and lifestyle coaching services you provide support the work Elyse does with her clients?

We have a proprietary system to help guide people back home to their Soul-styled self, and aligned business model. It is a powerful blueprint to live a higher vibe life where you and your environment and business are woven together as a beautiful tapestry. The best place to begin is with a Soul Signature design session,or wealth dynamics profile- we can proceed with the design or refresh of the interior environment if it is needed after that.

Your Energy is Your Currency

Energy is everything at the most fundamental level

Since everything is energy and all energy is connected, we can work long distance as effectively as in person. Since I work with people all over the United States and also from other countries, most of my sessions are through video call. -- Brian Aguirre

hen we mention currency most think of money. When I imagine currency I see a current, like the electricity that flows and powers our devices, invisible yet absolutely real and tangible. Like all things, currency is energy and it flows from one to the other in exchange for goods and services. Our personal energy also flows back and forth; we exchange our energy with others. You must have noticed that you enjoy spending time with certain people, perhaps with animals and or nature, and that when you do so it results in a sense and feeling of well-being. Similarly, you must have noticed that other interactions or activities leave you feeling drained. Have you considered who you are sharing your energy with? Where you are investing it, and why? By asking these questions we are pondering who we are sharing our time, our space and our life with. We must use discernment as a form of self-care. We would be wise to invest our energy only where mutually beneficial for all parties involved, and that includes us Is there any proof that everything is energy? We can look to recent discoveries in the field of Quantum Physics to realize that scientists have discovered at the most fundamental level of matter, the atoms, we observe pure energy fields. The atomic structure is energy vibrating and interacting at different frequencies. Everything is energy at the most fundamental level. For those of less scientific inclination I can say that there are many people who can feel, interpret and work with this energy, also known as chi, prana or life-force. The ability to perceive energy can be cultivated by various methods and practices such as meditation, yoga, tai-chi, just to name a few of the most well known practices. Is energy related to financial currency, the law of attraction, and similar concepts we are currently seeing in the wellness movement and mainstream spiritual teachings? Yes, absolutely. Our energy is also our creative power. As we have more of our creative pow-

er available to us, we become more capable of co-creating and manifesting our intentions into the physical world, this is the process of spiritual energies made manifest in physical reality. This is related to a spiritual law you may have heard which dictates “as within, so without”. Think of abundance not necessarily as an accumulation oh physical things. Try to imagine is as a state of being, a sort of openness, a sense of wholeness and plenitud, an energy that flows through you and manifests in the physical world as everything you need, including financial matters. Abundance includes money but it is so much more than that. It is health, connection, joy, laughter, love, purpose, peace, contentment, the list can go on and on. This is a lot to take in for someone who is not yet very familiar with spiritual concepts. Could you expand on it? Yes, it can feel like that sometimes. With this I will also mention that the more in alignment we are with our spiritual purpose the more support we receive from the Universal intelligent energy that permeates all things. How can we discover our purpose and live in “alignment”? Embark on a journey of soul searching and self-discovery. As you begin to walk, the way itself will appear before you. Trusting yourself, the Universal intelligence and the Divinity that exists within and permeates all things will greatly assist you in this journey towards self-realization. In this process, the support of a well-qualified energy healing practitioner can be of great assistance. Are there any simple practices you can share that can help our readers create more abundance in their lives, any practical advice? Yes. Two of the most simple practices are also the most powerful, as it often is, simplicity is the key. The first one is gratitude. “Practice being and feeling grateful for every-

63

thing that you perceive as being good in your life, count your blessings daily.” Do this first thing in the morning and at the end of each day. Practice this for at least 21 consecutive days and see how the way you feel starts to shift and notice how it attracts more things in your life to be grateful for. Focus on the feeling of gratitude. Then see if you can begin to see the blessings in those areas of your life which you do not perceive to be so favorable at this time. The second one is giving. “Practice giving without expectations of receiving anything in return”. Simply give for the joy of giving. It can be giving to help someone, it can be donating things you no longer need or don’t use often, it can be volunteering, it can be whatever feels right for you to give. This will create a feeling of abundance within you. Here I will share another spiritual law: “Giving and receiving are two sides of the same coin, it is the same thing.” I believe these two practices alone, gratitude and giving, can shift anyone’s life powerfully. Does prayer work, is praying effective in this process? “Prayer followed with action rooted in Faith and Knowing you are powerful, worthy and supported is one of the most profound practices I know of. When you combine prayer with proper fasting practices, you are on the next level”. How can someone work with you if they wish to be supported in creating wellness in all areas of their life, live in alignment, grow spiritually and find wholeness? There are two main ways that I can work with you to assist you in these matters. One is in person if you are in Miami, FL. The other one is long-distance via various methods of video conference or phone. We are not limited by time or space in this work.
