me ss age from our he a d of school de a r friends,
We inspire our students to: • develop a strong Jewish identity through an integrated curriculum within a nurturing, stimulating, and creative environment
As I write my Annual Report message to you, I am distracted by the news coming out of Israel. Since October 7, I have been checking the news multiple times a day. My message to you this year is that we have an amazing school. 2022–2023 was CJDS’s 20th Anniversary, and we honored exactly 20 faculty and staff who have given their creativity and expertise to our school for ten or more years. Our Educational Leadership Team is talented and dedicated, as is our Operations Team. Our faculty are outstanding, creative professionals. Our Security and Maintenance teams go above and beyond. Our Parent Committee leadership is incredible, and 100% of our parent body contributed to our Annual Campaign. Finally, our CJDS Board of Trustees has vision and tremendous commitment; together, we have created a school in which we can all feel very proud.
• become a community of Jewish learners • respect and appreciate diversity • love Torah, Israel, Hebrew language, and prayer • be contributing, caring and knowledgeable members of our community, our country, and the world” Our Vision Statement says the following in relation to Hebrew, Israel, and Jewish education: “At Chicago Jewish Day School, Jewish tradition informs our curriculum, calendar, celebrations, and daily schedule. We are committed to transmitting an in-depth knowledge of sacred Jewish texts and rituals, tradition and customs, and Jewish history. Our students gain fluency in reading, speaking, and understanding Hebrew language and literature, both classical and modern… Students also discover how to have a significant and joyful relationship with God, how to pray as a Jew, and to appreciate the centrality of Israel — the people and the land. Through this knowledge and experience, our students build meaningful Jewish lives…
As I watch Israel fighting for its very existence, I can’t help but think about our Mission and Vision. Our Mission states:
Chicago Jewish Day School weaves values of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) into every aspect of the school experience. Faculty, students, and parents are strongly encouraged to participate in activities that improve the world and promote justice, peace, compassion, and respect.”
“Chicago Jewish Day School creates for its students a standard of excellence in both Jewish and General Studies. Our students develop a passion for learning and a strong sense of themselves as Jews and as human beings.

During this stressful time in the history of Israel, our school community jumped into action. Students wrote cards and collected money for Israel through numerous fundraisers. Our parents organized chesed activities and additional fundraisers. We reached out to Israeli members of our school, as well as both our current and former shinshinim. Lastly, we welcomed both new and returning families to our school who were living in Israel and integrated them seamlessly into our community. To our wide community of donors, we know you are contributing, too. So this year, when you read our Annual Report, read it with the understanding that your gifts are not only supporting our existence as a school, but the future of our people as a whole. We are creating today’s and tomorrow’s leaders, literally ensuring the Jewish future and, God willing, the future of Israel. My message has always been a thank you and never an ask. This year, I am going to break from that tradition. I am asking you to increase your gift to CJDS while you also give a gift to Israel in their time of need. Your increased gift to CJDS truly will make a difference in the education of each child, and it will contribute to our next generation of Jewish leaders. Praying for peace, These words from our Mission and Vision are no longer who we aspire to be; they represent who we are. How do we know? We know by the assessments we conduct in school and how our teachers strive to meet each student’s individual needs. We know by the feedback we get from summer camps, youth groups, and high school teachers about the type of students that consistently come from CJDS: students who are kind, who are confident leaders, who advocate for themselves, and who create positive relationships with others. We know by the academic preparedness of our alumni as they enter high school and beyond. We know from the colleges our graduates attend and from the activities they engage in, which reflect leadership, social action, and Jewish commitment in so many different ways.
Ms. J (Judy)

t h a nk you to t he 2022–2023 pa rent commit t ee
As I reflect on the 2022–2023 school year and CJDS’s 20th Anniversary, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for our extremely talented and dedicated faculty, 20 of whom have been at CJDS for ten or more years. Gratitude for the administration who led CJDS through another wonderful year with flexibility and grace. Gratitude for the CJDS community that embodies warmth and kindness. With two current students and two alumni, I have been fortunate to be part of the CJDS community over a span of many years. Through Shabbat dinners, culminations, graduations, play dates, phone calls, parents nights out, and much more, our family has shared so much with CJDS. It takes work to create intentional community, and CJDS has gone above and beyond to welcome families from all walks of life and sects of Judaism into the fabric of this beautiful school. I am overwhelmed with appreciation for the work of those who built CJDS from the ground up and for those who continue to build it today.

the y e a r in re v ie w cjds’s 20t h a nni v er s a r y brought opportunities for both reflection and celebration. Over the course of the past 20 years,
CJDS has grown from seven students to 230, from five faculty and staff members to 65, from a small rented space at St. Alphonsus Church to our forever home on California Avenue. Thank you to the incredible CJDS community for joining us in celebrating this milestone!
school t heme “Be of the students of Aharon, loving peace and pursuing peace.” (Pirkei Avot 1:12). This phrase reminds our students of their responsibility on this earth — to use their skills, talents, interests, and questions to build bridges with one another, to embrace and learn from the differences that make each of them unique, to find their passions and share them with their communities, and to seek out peace and offer it to others.
20t h a nni v er s a r y honoree s In celebration of our 20th year, we honored the 20 faculty and staff who dedicated their careers to CJDS for 10+ years. Each of these individuals has played a monumental role in shaping the school that we are today, and we cannot thank them enough for their contributions.

mission, v ision, a nd ac tion en v ironmenta l ac t ion CJDS began composting in partnership with WasteNot Compost, and the Middle School Compost Club initiated fundraising efforts to support the program. CJDS also joined the Jewish Climate Leadership Coalition as well as the Jewish Youth Climate Movement.
e x pa nding horizons CJDS has cultivated relationships with outside educational organizations and programs, such as Poetry Pals and Facing History and Ourselves. Throughout the year, different grades led fundraisers and participated in community service projects for a number of non-profit organizations, including HIAS and Cradles to Crayons.

mission, v ision, a nd ac tion isr a el e x t ension Our Grade 8 students experienced the CJDS Israel trip in its entirety (IsraelNow program + CJDS extension) for the first time since the pandemic began. These students returned to us with a strengthened understanding of Israel as well as an increased sense of connection to the Jewish people and our history. Students carry their Israel experience and many years of learning with them, leaving CJDS prepared to engage as proud Jewish citizens in high school and beyond.
rebuil ding communit y In honor of CJDS’s 20th Anniversary, we brought together our community in more ways than ever. Parents, grandparents, alumni parents, and donors joined us for coffee and pastries with Head of School, Judy Finkelstein-Taff. Over 50 alumni came back to CJDS for the annual Alumni Pizza Party and viewing of the Middle School Musical, Singin’ in the Rain. Members of our community joined us for many weeks of Kabbalat Shabbat, as well as Parent Committee events, grade culminations, and graduation. It was a year of festivities, to say the least!

l e a rning sp otl ight s l ow er school Our Grade 5 students embarked on an Age of Exploration unit in which they “traveled” the world, delved into the perspectives of various explorers, and examined the enduring impacts—both positive and negative—of their discoveries. Along the journey, students also “met” influential Jewish historical figures, toured significant Jewish sites, and explored different primary sources. Developing research skills, students used their ability to discern credible sources while immersing themselves in non-fiction texts and websites detailing the history of different explorers. They organized their research, crafted compelling thesis statements, and showcased their comprehensive understanding through diverse mediums—writing, poster creation, and the design of a tool reflective of what might have been used during their explorers’ journeys or something applicable in today’s modern era. This hands-on experience involved deconstructing technology, utilizing components from computers and other devices to explore their internal workings. The students acknowledged the ways in which such innovations can both help and harm entire communities from ancient times to the present day. Grade 5 students culminated their learning with a masterful musical performance for family and friends!

In what has become a highly anticipated annual tradition, our Kindergarten “traveled” to Israel, spending a week learning about the history and culture of the Jewish homeland. Our teachers went above and beyond in ensuring that their trip was as engaging, fun, and educational as possible. Prior to departure, students divided up into planning committees, with each group taking ownership over an element of the trip to ensure it would run smoothly. From flight attendant to security guard to snack provider to airplane builder, each student had an important role. Once in “Israel,” our Kindergarten students invited their families to come see their hard work in action and partake in the fun!
Grade 6 students put their critical thinking skills and craftsmanship to use in a study of ancient civilizations, a unit which spanned across both Humanities and Judaic Studies. Students examined the life and culture of ancient Egypt and Hellenistic Judea through the use of ancient tools, many of which are still used today. A visit to the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, where students met with a museum design expert, helped spark creativity as students planned their “Museum of Ancient Civilization.” In this culminating project, Grade 6 students designed, built, and displayed hand-made replicas of ancient tools paired with written explanations of their applications in society.
