As we reach the finish line of another winter in the city, we hope that you are as excited as we are by the alreadylonger days and the promise of what lies ahead in the coming spring! The best part of my job is being able to meet so many incredibly talented and ambitious women. For our first 20 on Top feature, we selected 20 women in Chicago who are on top of their game professionally-—across many fields, all making a mark. Our cover star, Revel Group Co-founder and CEO, Britt Whitfield, shines brightly on the local event scene, producing some of the city’s most spectacular soirées in Revel’s breathtaking venues. The ongoing dialogue started by the #MeToo movement has a voice in Illinois—President-elect of the National Council of State Legislators Toi Hutchinson. In a story by Chicago Woman contributor Becky Carroll, Hutchinson stresses the importance of the inclusion of women all of backgrounds in the discussion about sexual harassment and what can be done to arrive at viable solutions. You might have noticed that we have been quite busy at Chicago Woman. Along with the magazine, we have put together a series of events that will bring our editorial to life and help strengthen the CW community. On March 20th, we are hosting our second Beautious event, an evening of beauty and style that is perfect for a girl’s night out. We are also beyond thrilled to announce our biggest event yet, Covet Market. Launching on May 6th, Covet will bring together some of the city’s best local makers and creatives—for a day of shopping, entertainment and amazing food in partnership with Chicago’s own culinary incubator, The Hatchery. Check out the Covet feature in this issue to get a sneak peek at some of the vendors. Follow us at @chiwomanmag to keep updated on all of our events to make sure you don’t miss out! And as always, thank you! Jennifer Smith Tapp Director, Editorial and Brand Strategy jennifer@chicago-woman.com

MUMMIES AT THE FIELD MUSEUM March 16, 2018 – April 21, 2019 See mummies as you never have before in this rare, close-up look at mummies from the two places in the world with the longest and most interesting mummification traditions: ancient Egypt and ancient Peru. Mummies concludes its highly successful national tour to open at home in Chicago. Composed entirely of objects from The Field’s own collection, the exhibition includes 14 mummies, exquisitely painted coffins, stone sarcophagus fragments, ceramics, mummified animals, and mummy masks. Visitors will also be able to virtually explore the contents of never-opened Peruvian mummy bundles to discover the individuals within: children, mothers, and the objects their families lovingly buried with them. Each story uncovered paints a picture of people from a different time. The Field Museum of Natural History, 1400 South Lake Shore Drive, fieldmuseum.org

COSI FAN TUTTE February 17 – March 16, 2018 Subtitled “The School for Lovers,” this beloved Mozart comedy is a probing look into romantic relationships. It starts out with a cynical philosopher’s bet that two beautiful young women can’t remain faithful to their fiancés for 24 hours. As the intrigue deepens, the young women’s affections—and those of the young men—move into a new place that’s risky and scary. The couples’ feelings reveal themselves through the sheer genius of Mozart and his brilliant librettist, Da Ponte. Così Fan Tutte is the epitome of sophisticated, thoughtprovoking entertainment. IN THEIR OWN FORM THE JOFFREY BALLET PERFORMS MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM April 25 – May 6, 2018 This is not Shakespeare’s midsummer. Swedish trailblazer Ekman astounds with this ode to the longest day of the year. Delight in joyful abandon and romance under the Scandinavian sun as dancers celebrate and let their imaginations run wild. A tour de force that took Stockholm by storm. The Auditorium Theatre, 50 East Congress Parkway, joffrey.org

April 12 — July 8, 2018 Through a lens of Afro-futurist aesthetics, In Their Own Form seeks to illuminate the myriad of ways blackness might hope to exist without the imposition of oppression, racism and stereotypes ever-present in Western cultures. Re-imagining, re-purposing, mysticism, avant-gardism, and spirituality, closely related to the Afro-futurist movement, have long been tied to the Black Experience and have functioned as a necessary escape from a fraught past and present. This exhibit prefaces personhood, both fantastical and actual, over perceived realities and is curated by Sheridan Tucker Anderson, MoCP Curatorial Fellow for Diversity in the Arts. small BUSINESS DIVERSE VOICES HELP BUSINESSES SUCCEED by Freida Curry

In my role at the Women’s Business Development Center, I counsel a wide range of business leaders on how they can lead their teams to success. In my role, I’m often asked how business owners and executives can ensure women are given equal voice, recognition, and support in the workplace. While broader safeguards and programs are needed to ensure equality in the workplace—including the implementation of public policies designed to support women and other underrepresented populations on their professional journey—the path to equality starts with an organization’s leadership.

3 keys to diversity 1. RECOGNIZE IDEAS AND OPINIONS. Consciously recognize the ideas and opinions of each member of your team. Develop and implement strategies for engagement and then give credit when their insights lead to team success.

2. ENCOURAGE DIALOGUE. Allow for open and honest dialogue within your team. Whether identifying areas for improvement, illuminating unintentional inequities, or simply addressing miscommunication between team members, encouraging honest conversations in a safe environment will make your team stronger.

3. APPRECIATE DIVERSITY. Everyone on your team has something unique to offer. There is value in differences, so welcome and seek out the diversity of opinions and perspectives in your own organization in order to make your team more representative and— ultimately—more successful. cw

Freida Curry is Manager Director of the Illinois Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) and Veteran Assistance Services at the Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC), a nationally recognized leader in the field of women’s economic development.

CLU BOOK

The problems facing Chicago’s public schools are well-documented, with solutions being harder to come by, especially for schools in the city’s underserved neighborhoods. Valerie Groth, a former social worker placed within CPS schools, offers an outline for her vision of a new education model in her book The Power of the Possible: The Dire State of Inner City Education and One Woman’s Revolution to Fix It. Groth is also the Founder and Executive Director of Ryan Banks Academy, Chicago’s first residential school for urban youth, opening this fall. Available on Amazon.com, $9.99.

The internet can be a noisy place, especially for the continuing conversation about what Feminism really means and whom is included in the dialogue. Feminist Speakeasy, a intersectional lifestyle brand for feminists, was launched by Dasha Guyton, after she tapped into a need for a one-stop destination for information about events, advice on dealing with sexist coworkers or gifts for the feminists in our lives. “I kept finding out about groundbreaking feminist events after they happened and I couldn’t find a digital publication or gift shop rooted in inclusive feminism all year round,” Learn more at feministspeakeasy.com

STYLE + GRACE

THE ART OF MEAL PLANNING by Rachel Popa

Meal planning is not just a trendy way to cook; it takes skill and knowhow to do properly. Dietician and Founder of Eat Chic Chicago Amari Thomsen gives her tips so you’ll be more likely to follow through with the healthy choices all week long. HOW AND WHEN TO PREP INGREDIENTS Prepping ingredients ahead of time is the key to sticking to your meal plan. If you can get halfway to a healthy meal before the busy week TRY IT OUT! begins, you’re more likely to finish what Get this recipe for you started and stick to the plan you set these No-Bake Maple for yourself. Get the labor-intensive and Cinnamon Pecan Bars time-consuming meal prep tasks out of and more online at the way when you come home from the chicago-woman.com grocery store. Marinate meats, make sauces and dressings, cook grains (oats, brown rice, quinoa) and prep any slow cooker meal directly in the stoneware insert, and refrigerate before plugging it in the next morning.

HOW TO SHOP

Once you have planned out the meals for the week ahead, write down all of the ingredients you will need for each (be specific!). Then do a quick audit of your kitchen—crossing out items that you already have on hand. Organize your shopping list by grocery store department to make your trip most efficient. When items on your list are on sale, buy in bulk. For example, purchase five pounds of ground meat and divvy it up into one pound portions. Store each portion in an airtight bag, flatten for easy storage and quick thawing, and then freeze it for later!

RECIPES TO USE

One-pot and slow cooker recipes that can be made in large batches are perfect for meal planning. Things like soups and stews can all be made in big quantities and then stored in the freezer for later meals. cw

NEED TO KNOW

FROM

#MeToo TO

#TimesUp Illinois State Senator Toi Hutchinson has served as a passionate advocate against sexual harassment in Illinois politics. As President-elect of the National Council of State Legislators, she is fast becoming a national voice on this issue. And she’s urging legislative colleagues to continue elevating this issue across the country. by Becky Carroll

“As much as some folks may want to turn the page, we aren’t going away. #TimesUp is about moving from saying #MeToo to what are going to do about it? And, how can we ensure that people without the economic security and privilege it unfortunately takes to fight publicly aren’t left behind. As far as making sure this stays relevant, it’s about no longer tolerating the way things are. I love this quote: ‘I don’t want to accept the things I cannot change. I want to change the things I can’t accept’.” To truly bring this change to everyone, Hutchinson’s advice to her colleagues and allies is the same. “We need to keep an eye toward diversity, bipartisanship, and an acknowledgment that sexual harassment also exists across the LGBTQ spectrum. Those of us who live in the intersections of race, class, and gender know that racist behavior can be sexualized and sexist behavior can be racialized.”

20

chicago woman

MARCH/ APR IL 2 0 1 8

As a woman of color and a mother, she’s as vigilant that the burden to change the pervasiveness of sexual harassment cannot be left to women alone. “It also has to be about teaching men not to harass or assault. I have two sons and a daughter. The one thing I want them all to know, is that an educated, empowered, passionate, strong woman is nothing to fear. That’s something to celebrate. And that is just as important for my sons to know as it is for my daughter to own.” Her hope is #TimesUp serves not only as a unifying movement for men and women, but for everyone across the economic landscape. “What we are seeing is a reckoning, from low-wage workers in retail, hospitality, and the foodservice industry to entertainment and politics. The days of living under a rock are gone.” cw

COMMUNITY WHATS NEXT FOR #METOO? Few could have predicted the expose in the New York Times detailing Harvey Weinstein’s history of sexual harassment would explode into a national “reckoning” on sexual harassment, prompting a flood of stories from women in Hollywood and national media, to women in Chicago’s own Ford factory. But as the dust settles, we are left with the question: where do we go from here? Much of the conversation around harassment has focused on well-known and influential women. Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) and our grantees believe that improving the lives of all women starts with the most vulnerable among us. Any solution to the problem of sexual harassment must include low-wage women, who are six times more likely to experience gender-based violence in their lifetime, compared to high-income women. In 2012, CFW grantees from the anti-violence and labor movements came together in the Coalition Against Workplace Sexual Violence to explore opportunities to work together to improve the safety and well-being of working women in Chicago. As a result: two members of the Coalition founded Healing to Action“ to support

by K. Sujata

worker leaders in developing meaningful responses to gender violence in their communities.” Worker-led solutions to gender-based violence are critical, says Healing to Action co-founder Karla Altmayer. These diverse strategies include the incorporation of sexual harassment training into workforce development programs for the restaurant industry, where at least 66 percent of women workers report experiencing sexual harassment. Another focus is the development of a leadership initiative for survivors of domestic violence within the labor movement as well as increasing workers access to legal representation through partnerships with legal aid organizations. While the majority of low-wage workers are women (69 percent of workers earning less than $10 an hour are women, according to the National Women’s Law Center), the leadership of labor movements is still largely male. Based on worker input, Healing to Action is also looking at ways “to empower men to help and support women, [with] concrete tools to talk about the issue with other men,” says Altmayer. cw

Black F&B

Many stories abound regarding the food scene in the city, but often left out of the narrative are black professionals working in all aspects of the industry. A new website called Black Food & Beverage, seeks to expand the scope of the culinary landscape. Founders Angela Burke and Alisha Sommer on the inspiration for Black F&B: “Contributions black men and women have made to America’s food culture are substantial yet often overlooked. Until robust stories that accurately reflect the diverse group of people who make up the food and beverage industry are told, the narrative is incomplete. We hope Black Food & Beverage is a step toward filling those gaps and broadening the conversation.” Learn more at blackfandb.com

THE TALBOTT HOTEL REDESIGN Chicago has no shortage of places to satisfy design lovers and hotels are some of our favorite spaces to get our aesthetic fix. We are especially loving the modern refresh of the Talbott Hotel, spearheaded by Chicago-based design firm KARA MANN. “We wanted to maintain the historic authenticity of The Talbott Hotel, so we chose to keep the majority of the existing moldings, but infused modern architectural elements to eloquently articulate the updating of the hotel. The selection of new furniture and lighting were layers of modern and traditional to give a nod to the hotel’s past and future,” Mann explains.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE SHOW Whitney Reynolds, host of the Whitney Reynolds Show on PBS, has penned Beyond the Interview: A 52 Week Guide of Inspiration— sharing a deeper dive into the stories of her guests. Released on March 26! whitneyreynolds.com/store

TALES FROM THE TRENCHES

Evelyn Shelton OWNER, EVELYN’S FOOD LOVE

WHAT ARE THREE THINGS YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF SINCE STARTING YOUR BUSINESS? I am as smart as I thought I was; resourceful, too. I am far more patient than I thought I was. And, I am more ambitious than even I thought I was… It can often be rather difficult to turn my brain off while contemplating future possibilities related to the food industry in general and related to my business specifically. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY DURING THE LAUNCH OF YOUR BUSINESS? Yes. I would have marketed the café ad nauseum prior to opening in an effort to create as much buzz as possible. I would have also put more processes in place prior to opening (i.e., policies, procedures, work flows, etc.) I had some of this, but clearly not enough. I would have sought more contractor references to avoid unnecessary issues and construction delays. I would have spent more money on recruiting the best staff possible rather than relying as heavily as I did on friends and family to save a bit. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN WHO ARE CONSIDERING STRIKING OUT ON THEIR OWN? First, do it! Don’t overthink it. Don’t ask

everyone’s opinion. Women, myself included, tend to seek too much outside input. Don’t get in your own way. Just go for it! Second, be very careful who you speak to about your goals and plans. More importantly, be careful who you listen to. Unfortunately not everyone will be happy for you, especially if your dreams come to fruition and theirs do not or are not. Do seek advice but do so from those who are successfully doing what you aspire to do. WHAT IS THE MOST INVALUABLE RESOURCE FOR YOU AS AN ENTREPRENEUR? A great lender such as LISC! They have been an amazing partner for me. Access to capital is vital to a new business, so partner with a lender who understands that. A lender whose mission and vision aligns with yours. A lender who sees

your vision and supports your dream is vital to your overall success. LISC did that for me. Start-up costs can present a financial strain. You must have enough cash to succeed which can mean the difference between moving forward, staying at ground zero or possibly failing. Choose to move forward with a great lender. A great staff ranks as high as access to capital. When you are a start-up, a passionate entrepreneur, it can be challenging to hire individuals who see your vision as plainly as you do. It is imperative to hire individuals who will ride the wave with you through the rough period; not always easy. It’s cliché but good help truly is hard to find. Remember also to share the rewards with those who help you build, grow and realize your dream. cw

SPRING REFRESH

YWCA x FMLA The oldest and largest women’s organization in the region, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, recently implemented six weeks of paid family leave. This past February marked the 25th Anniversary of the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).“We have gone a step further than FMLA requires by offering paid leave to our staff,” stated YWCA Metropolitan Chicago CEO Dorri McWhorter. “It is important for the YWCA, with its mission of eliminating racism and empowering women, to walk the talk and be a role model for the type of advancements and policies that we want to see employers adopt more broadly in the workplace.”

PHILANTHROPY SPOTLIGHT

Grace Hou PRESIDENT OF WOODS FUND Chicago Women in Philanthropy will honor Grace Hou, President of Woods Fund at their annual luncheon on March 24th. Hou, and CWIP leaders, talk to Chicago Woman about Woods Fund and being catalysts for positive change in Chicago.

We witnessed a lot of upheaval regarding immigration and race relations in 2017. What kept you going every day and how important was it for Woods Fund to be impactful in these areas? I think what we witnessed was an uncovering of the underlying animus and hatred that has been directed toward immigrants and other communities of color for decades. There were certain segments of the population well aware of the white supremacists among us, but many of us who weren’t directly impacted by it and weren’t watching for it. But in the midst of all the divisive rhetoric and hateful actions, what keeps me going is knowing that I am on the side of humanity, that I am a small part of a large resistance, and that we are the antidote to hatred and othering. At Woods Fund Chicago, we actively support organizations and people who are every day fighting the brutality of structural racism and poverty. For me and for them, there is not an option to stop ‘going’ because we believe in justice and equity for all. The work of Woods Fund is critically important because—regardless of what the political climate is—community organizing is democracy and ensures that those most impacted by policies have a voice and a say.

We live in one of the most multicultural yet segregated cities. How does the work at Woods Fund help to bridge that divide and strengthen our city? Woods Fund Chicago is a philanthropic institution. Our primary objective is to fund the work of community and neighborhood organizations to engage their constituencies to action and to amplify their voices and stories. We fund several coalitions and collaborative efforts that bring together people and organizations from different parts of the city, from different faiths and races, and from different experiences and backgrounds. Through the work of our grantees, community organizers, and advocates—despite all of our differences, we are united in a fight for power to dismantle the de facto systems and structures that have for decades divided and oppressed these communities. We fight for a better city for all of us.

WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS OF CWIP AND WHY THE ORGANIZATION IS SO IMPORTANT? CWIP is an important place for women because of the many ways it can provide various opportunities for learning and support. From helping women learn how to navigate professional relationships to the mentoring program, CWIP is a place where women are supported by other women in ways that don’t usually happen in their professional settings. ARE THERE ANY NEW INITIATIVES THAT OUR READERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT? HOW CAN SOMEONE GET INVOLVED WITH CWIP? CWIP is a volunteer-run membership organization and anyone can join! In addition to our new racial justice programming, we typically hold four other programs and networking events throughout the year. Our Women’s Leadership Mentoring Program pairs emerging leaders and mid-career professionals with mentors that can help take their career to the next level. We also always need volunteers for committees, which is a great way to build your network. — CAROLYN NOPAR, CO-CHAIR, CWIP, NOPAR CONSULTING

LIFE PET LOVE

her story PAULA FASSEAS FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN, PAWS CHICAGO

Over the next two years, Alexis and I learned the terrible story of mass euthanasia of cats and dogs in Chicago, and developed a solutions-based plan to address the plight of homeless pets and raise public awareness on the staggering number of pets that were being killed in silence at traditional shelters. In 1997, very few people knew that homeless pets were being killed. Virtually no one knew the extent that more than 42,000 cats and dogs would die that year in shelters. We founded PAWS Chicago that year as an advocacy organization to bring attention to the plight of homeless animals and engage the community in becoming the solution to pet overpopulation. On May 30, 1998, PAWS Chicago was launched with an adoption event, Angels with Tails. The message that homeless pets needed to be saved was taken to the public. The event was held on the streets and in the boutiques of the Magnificent Mile where local businesses enthusiastically agreed to showcase the animals in their storefronts. That single event brought the plight of homeless pets to the foreground, leading to

WHY GO NO-KILL? When you adopt from a no-kill shelter, you don’t save just one life, you save two. Not only are you saving your pet, but you’re opening up space for another pet at risk. With millions of homeless pets killed in the United States each year, it’s hard to think of a good reason not to adopt.

continued public and media engagement that evolved over time into the PAWS we know today. PAWS Chicago was founded to mobilize people to help homeless animals. Since our founding, I’ve continued to focus on bringing people into the animal welfare community and engaging them to take action in ways that help save homeless pets. From our thousands of volunteers, foster families and adopters to our outreach initiatives to the free and low-cost spay/ neuter and medical services we offer, we work to mobilize people to be the solution for homeless pets. Since our founding, the community has reduced the killing by 80 percent. We are getting closer to our goal of a No Kill Chicago! cw

My animal welfare awareness moment occurred while rescuing a stray dog (I named Pippen) from the Greek island of Crete in June 1996. He would follow our family everywhere we went that summer, and stole my heart. I learned that Pippen would have been poisoned once tourist season ended, and was shocked that Greece would treat its animals with such cruelty. Pippen’s story inspired my daughter, Alexis to help homeless pets back home. As a high school sophomore, Alexis signed up to volunteer at a local animal shelter to fulfill her community service requirement. She was shocked when she learned that instead of saving pets, the shelter was replacing basic medical care with euthanasia. A simple sneeze was a death sentence.

WINE

notes Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah, we’re familiar with these wines, but what about wines from lesser known grapes? The wine world is multicultural with thousands of equally delicious, indigenous (local) varietals re-emerging from vineyards across the globe. The wine will be authentic, usually from a smaller, less commercial wine producer offering an interesting flavor profile for a delicious drinking experience. Unfortunately, lesser-known wines are often ignored by trendy restaurants, hipster wine bars or passed over by wine shop owners who want a standard wine with a ”pretty” label. Ask a trusted wine merchant for help to discover these under-the-radar varietals. by Consuelo Martinez-Quattrocchi

AGIORGITIKO RED WINE Hard to pronounce, the Agiorgitiko grape is indigenous to Greece and cultivated throughout the islands. Hearty and adaptable, it is a small, thick-skinned grape used to make inexpensive Greek export wine. It is also blended for a light, juicy rosé or full-bodied, bold red. Flavorful, fragrant, and very fruit forward, it goes beyond drinking with just Greek fare. Enjoy with flat bread pizza, aged cheeses and roasted meat. BARRAIDA DOC RED WINE From the north-central region of Portugal and made from the Baga (“berry” in Portuguese) grape. Wines made with Baga are overlooked as the grapes were used for large volume bulk wines, including bargain-priced rosé. Oak-aged and blended with other varietals, it is affordable, fragrant, very food-friendly and matures nicely. Pair with a hearty stew or chili, soft goat cheese, even fresh tuna, bacalhau (cod), grilled octopus or squid. TREBBIANO WHITE WINE Indigenous to central Italy and widely cultivated by the ancient Romans as they conquered Europe. This prolific grape is blended with other grapes and used in cognac and brandy. Dismissed by wine snobs due to its large volume, it produces ordinary to extraordinary wines. Several regions offer an acidic, crisp, medium bodied wine. Try a Trebbiano Abruzzese, Spoletino or Toscano. Enjoy alone as a single sipper, serve with grilled chicken or shellfish. cw

THE IMPORTANCE OF AFFECTION When working with couples, I frequently check-in with them about the presence of affection in their relationship. I want to know, how frequently do they hug, kiss, hold hands, or make an affectionate gesture towards one another. In strained relationships, it is not uncommon to hear that there is little to no affection between partners. by Dr. Anne Brennan Malec, PsyD, LMFT Common reasons that keep partners from engaging in physical and verbal affection include: lack of quality time, not being an “affectionate type” of person, not wanting to give their partner the wrong message (e.g. “I am just being loving, which does not also mean that I want sex.”), he or she seems mad at me so I try to avoid them, being frustrated for being the partner who always initiates affection, or just not feeling very loving towards them. All of these reasons for avoiding affection can make sense in a given relationship, but with the research about the importance of affection in a relationship, this reasoning may be short-sighted. Do you remember when you first met your partner? Do you then remember the building excitement of the first

touch with him/her? Recall those powerful feelings, that excitement of wondering when he or she would grab your hand. And when it finally happened, it usually did not disappoint, did it? Research has found that holding hands affects both our brains and our physical wellbeing, and our relationships. A study out of UCLA reported that human touch leads to the release of oxytocin, which is known as “the love hormone”. Oxytocin is responsible for increasing feelings of compassion, trust, and generosity, while decreasing fear and anxiety. Pretty remarkable what such a simple and instinctual behavior can do. Touch also reduces pain because of the serotonin that’s released. As infants show us with the grasping reflex, humans are hard-wired to connect. Handholding is instinctual. Researchers have found that adults who fail to receive regular and consistent human touch are susceptible to developing depression and anxiety disorders. The Touch Research Institute (TRI) reported that the skin is a sense organ and needs stimulation. When fingers are interlaced the body can respond with one’s heart rate and blood pressure falling, which leads to increased feelings of relaxation. What’s holding us back from embracing this? Today’s growing obsession with our phones and social media over personal physical contact may unintentionally be affecting this. So, what can we do to shift this paradigm? It may be as simple as instilling in ourselves the mindfulness to outstretch a hand more often to those in our lives who matter most to us. One thing is certain: our entire bodies, from our nerves to our brains, respond positively to touch and crave it from the time we’re born. Whether it’s due to instinct, comfort, intimacy or love, touch brings us closer to each other both physically and emotionally—and is a necessity for our overall well-being. As we’ve seen, humans are not only creatures of habit, we’re also creatures of comfort. We gravitate toward situations and people who make us feel as content and secure as possible. Besides feeling secure through touch, one can feel affection verbally. Verbal expressions of affection are the words you speak intended to validate your positive feelings of love. Make it a daily habit to express your thanks, gratitude, and appreciation for all that your spouse brings to your life. Challenge yourself to notice things your partner does to create a safe and secure home, bring home a paycheck, provide loving care for the entire family—and then tell them what it means to you.

Anne Brennan Malec’s practice, Symmetry Counseling, offers a broad range of services. For more information on affection, or to speak with a couple’s therapist, please call Symmetry Counseling at (312) 578-9990 or visit symmetrycounseling.com.

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD

FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL BUSINESSES By Cherilyn G. Murer I have a vision for a new business—it’ll be great! And so it goes. Another entrepreneur is born into the world of business ownership. But what will keep the business afloat when a large percentage of start-ups fail? The key to sustainability is a business plan that takes into account the many changes in the marketplace which inevitably occur. A new business does indeed start with a vision, a good idea and a viable niche market. But staying power requires much more, starting with adequate capitalization throughout the life of the business. To succeed, an entrepreneur must wear many hats. Regardless of personal disposition, a business owner must concurrently maintain a triad of emphases: • Ongoing new business development;

Chicago Woman magazine is a community bringing women together. We believe in supporting one another. We are a platform for just that. Behind every successful woman, there is a tribe of successful women that have her back. We are that tribe. GET INVOLVED. hello@chicago-woman.com

• Internal operations, training, and management; • Product or service quality control and accountability. Timely closure of contracts is essential, but one must also ensure that any business deal has the potential to be profitable. You need to fully understand the financial impact and consequences of the contract. What does it cost to deliver the product or service? Is there a sufficient profit margin? The day-to-day issues of business ownership include the ability to manage the following: • Human resources—salary and benefits; •C ompliance with state and federal guidelines, including appropriate behavior in the workplace; • Equipment maintenance and capital improvements, and • Staff diversity of expertise with employees who complement each other. It isn’t sufficient to just do the work. One must exceed client expectations for quality and timeliness of service delivery. The product or service must be priced competitively with allocated resources sufficient but not excessive. Entrepreneurship is the backbone of American business. There’s a lot that goes into making it succeed but there’s much to gain! For those who are willing to take the leap, be assured it can be the most exciting, rewarding time of your career and your life.

LIFE THROWS US CURVE BALLS. ARE YOU PREPARED? Twenty-one years ago, my parents got a divorce. While that seems like a pretty normal statistic, people affected by divorce know how terrible the experience is for a family. To put it bluntly: it sucks. Like many women going through the process, my mom was quickly faced with tons of legal fees and left financially devastated. She worked two jobs to ensure that my brother and I were okay. Our family made extreme sacrifices to rebuild. This is not a new story for over 50% of the marriages that terminate each year. It is however, one of life’s curve balls. Their transition was hard on me and negatively impacted my behavior. My mom decided that the best therapy would be for me to attend “Camp Entrepreneur” at Seton Hall College in Pennsylvania during junior year of high school. I will forever be grateful for this experience! It fueled my entrepreneurial spirit, and I earned a certificate of achievement from the National Education Center for Women in Business. The lion was unleashed, and soon after, I started taking business classes at the local community college. From there, I earned my degree in Business Economics at Penn State, and then had the pleasure of working for some of the best firms on Wall Street. I soaked up knowledge on how to understand the markets, built investment portfolios, received licenses and designations that provided me with the know-how to become a credible financial planner. All of this education gave me the tools to become financially independent and help my clients achieve their financial goals. Today, I’m extremely proud to report that my mom has recently retired at the early age of 64. She has the highest credit score possible (honest to God!), ZERO debt, a paid-off house, and a sizeable nest egg to enjoy her golden years. I taught her to pay herself first, and save for the future. The best part: she listened. That is why I started MEL Consulting Co. and created the exclusive 6-month comprehensive program, “Achieving Financial Independence for Women.” I teach women how to take control of their money and incorporate the necessary life skills to stand on their own two feet. I’d love to empower you to build a strong financial foundation and create wealth, while planning for life’s curve balls. When a tooth is extracted, it is best to replace it so the teeth next to it and above/below it do not shift out of place. That can create a new bite that is not ideal and can negatively affect your chewing and TMJ. There are three main ways to replace a missing tooth: an implant/ crown, a bridge, and a removable partial denture. There are pros and cons involved with each choice: Implant/Crown: PROS: C an be flossed normally It will never get decay Adjacent teeth are not altered CONS: M ost expensive option Takes 4-6 months to complete 3 Unit Bridge: PROS: G ood option if adjacent teeth already have crowns Can be completed in 3 weeks Can be kept healthy with good home care CONS: A djacent teeth will need crowns Special floss needed to floss under bridge I f either supporting tooth gets decay, the entire bridge needs to be replaced. Removable Partial Denture PROS: L east expensive option Clasps can be metal or gum colored Can be completed in 2 months CONS: I t is removable It needs to be cleaned after eating, food may get caught underneath There may be slight movement when chewing DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT DENTAL CARE THAT YOU’D LIKE TO HAVE ANSWERED IN THIS COLUMN? HOW ONLINE DIVORCES FAIL

By Gemma B. Allen

We live so much of our love lives online: meet our match, announce our relationship status, Evite friends to showers and weddings, get gifted with online registers, and plan honeymoons through brand-name travel sites. What about legally ending a marriage online? It sounds very appealing and blessedly impersonal. Everyone dreads the messiness of he said/she said, the costs of legal fees, and the elongated pain and drama depicted in the epic movie “The War of the Roses.” The fundamental problem with online divorces is that marriage is a legal relationship that carries legal rights and duties with it. Undoing that legal relationship is complex. You do not want to wake up years later to find that the IRS or some other creditor has not been successfully dealt with by your divorce agreement and that the liability is still knocking at your door. Worse yet, you do not want to find that car or boat that you agreed to give up was involved in a major crash with your ex at the wheel and your name still on the title. You may think lawyers are biased against online divorces because they are taking business away, but that is not true. The fact is that many of the online attempts to divorce create complicated clean-up work for lawyers. Divorce procedures themselves differ from state to state and sometimes county to county, so the one size fits all model can frustrate and even sabotage your attempts to be civil and efficient. Somewhere between too much war and too risky a peace, there are good divorce solutions. Choose your attorney carefully and work with them proactively to have the best outcome for you and your children. Be assured that the largest percentage of cases do settle. “The War of the Roses” was just a movie. Most couples will never experience that kind of drama.

Gemma Allen is an experienced divorce attorney dedicated to providing the best results for families. Learn more at www.laddenallen.com or by connecting at 312-853-3000 gemmaallen@laddenallen.com. MARCH/APRIL 2018

Sometimes you find amazing dishes in unexpected places like a Dublin food walking tour featuring traditional and contemporary fare from a range of bakeries, food halls and cheese mongers. Wherever you go, there’s always a new taste to be discovered and below is a rundown of the best for going around the world in 180 plates! by Kathy Schutz

Locally in Chicago we have two great companies who offer food-based trips. Sunita Vira offers retreats in Santa Fe and India for 2018. Please your palate in a variety of ways,

whether you’re looking for an immersive 12-day cultural tour of Vietnam or smaller samplers. Tour with a food blogger to sample delicacies and rarities while learning about the role food has played throughout Vietnam history including the incorporation of dishes introduced by foreign occupiers such as the French. Prefer to be more hands on? Try a cookery class in Bangkok, featuring the sights and smells of bustling markets and learning Thai cooking techniques for your favorite classics. Take a pasta master class in Bologna and discover why the city is known as la grassa e dotta (the fat and learned one) famous for its cuisine and universities. Go on the cutting edge of French cooking with a creative fusion and specialty dinner in Lyon, France. One company pairs travelers with hand-picked local hosts for authentic, intimate food experiences. WOMEN & WEALTH:

New Tax Reform— Answers to Common Questions At Calamos Wealth Management, we are committed to engaging and supporting women on sophisticated wealth planning topics while helping them proactively navigate their financial landscape. As women create and control an increasing share of wealth, their economic influence both at home and in the workplace continues to grow as well. To help women feel prepared and confident in their understanding of how the new Tax Act may affect them, below we have summarized some common questions and related answers:

Congress stated the new Tax Act would provide tax savings for all Americans. Is this the case? Although the new Tax Act may

benefit the majority of Americans, single taxpayers with income over $157,000 and married couples with income over $315,000 likely will pay higher taxes. This result seems likely because these taxpayers previously spent more time in the 28% bracket before progressing into the 33% bracket. These same taxpayers now will spend less time in the lower 24% bracket before progressing into the 32% bracket while losing key itemized deductions that have been reduced or eliminated under the new Tax Act.

How has the primary mortgage interest deduction changed? How does it affect a taxpayer’s current loan that exceeds the new limits? For taxpayers who had outstanding mortgages prior to December 15, 2017, primary mortgage interest remains deductible up to $1 million of principal. Certain mortgages on pending transactions also were

by Mohini McCormick, CFP®, VP, Senior Wealth Advisor and Ian Rivero, CFP® , Wealth Advisor

grandfathered under the prior rules. This grandfather provision applies to those transactions under contract by December 15, 2017, purchased by January 1, 2018 and closed by April 1, 2018. New mortgages will be deductible up to principal amounts of $750,000. For all purposes, primary mortgages apply to totals on primary and secondary homes combined.

Can taxpayers still deduct interest paid on a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC)? Does this answer change if there is no primary mortgage but only a HELOC? Is the HELOC then considered a first position loan and thus tax deductible? Likely no, in either situation. Under the new Tax Act, taxpayers only may deduct interest on primary mortgages, unless HELOC is used specifically for home improvements and is within deduction limits.

How has the estate tax exemption changed? The estate tax exemption has doubled under the

new Tax Act. Each taxpayer now has a personal estate tax exemption amount of $11.2 million; married couples can now shelter up to $22.4 million from estate tax. Congress will adjust these amounts for inflation over time. It is important to review your old estate plan. State estate taxes may now present problems that did not exist before. Even though a taxpayer may not be subject to the federal estate tax due to its higher exemption amount, that taxpayer may still be subject to a state inheritance or estate tax in light of significant changes Congress has made to estate tax laws over time since June of 2001. Those taxpayers should update their estate plans to account for their particular state laws to avoid triggering the applicable state estate tax prematurely. Estate plans that use self-adjusting formulas should also be reviewed to ensure the resulting trusts and funding amounts still reflect intended results among beneficiaries. If you have any questions, we encourage you to contact us, or your tax professional, to explore how the new laws may affect your personal situation.

20 ON TOP THE LIST

BRITT WHITFIELD CEO, THE REVEL GROUP

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU. Professionally: All of these women have inspired me by their own work or have challenged me to rethink all of my ideas: Brenda Jacobsen, Sarah Banasiak, Lynn Kiley, Colleen Hickey, Katrina Markoff, Marley Finnegan, Connie Falcone, Jodi Fyfe, CC Ryan, Marina Birch, Jacqui Scott, Kelly Cavanaugh, Nicole Orlando, Sara Barg, Molly Brewe, Lauren Warnock, Heather Guillen, Susan Thompson, Kathleen Whitfield, Bridgit Lombard, Caroline Lubbers, Jenni Suvari, Liz Vetter, Mindy Segal, and Courtney Wright. Personally: Rebel Wilson—she stole my look, so I stole a couple of her go-to gags. Just kidding, I taught her everything she knows and she still stole my look.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. Honestly, I’m proud that it worked. It’s weird to say out loud, but there are times when I sit back and think—holy shit, we survived. We survived a recession, and our own inexperience, and all the trials of normal adult life and all the little disasters of owning a business. I think no matter how confident an entrepreneur is, there are these “woah” moments. I’m also proud that we have kept up the culture of fun and flexibility that drove me to start my own company in the first place.

THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR? Staying focused. I have a dog named Tada who acts like a living metaphor for how my brain works: “This smells good. There’s something shiny. Someone new is here. Everything is exciting.” I see the value of my own enthusiasm but it can make it harder for me to stay on task. Luckily my team appreciates my strengths and is patient about my weaknesses. Tada might know how to sit and stay if he had a team around him like I do…

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” “If you can’t beat ‘em, feed ‘em.” BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. No one is going to give you any power—you just have to take it (given to me at a bar, where all the best advice comes from).

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY DURING THE LAUNCH OF YOUR COMPANY? There are so many things I would have done differently— no amount of planning can protect you against setbacks. But the thing I would always, always do the same is what Clint (Chief Operating Officer) and I did the first time we booked a big job. We had been living on the change between our couch cushions (and my mom’s couch cushions, and the cushions of anyone still nice enough to let us in their house). We put our hearts and souls and asses on the line to land our first big one. And that night we bought tickets to Ireland and lived like idiot kings for a week. It was irresponsible and debaucherous, and it was the exactly right thing to do.

WHAT WOULD YOU TEACH YOUNG GIRLS AS A BUSINESS OWNER AND A MOTHER? Be first. Be kind. Be awesome.

JAMIE HAYES FASHION DESIGNER, PRODUCTION MODE

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU. I’m part of a group called the League of Women Designers. We meet on a monthly basis to talk about design and entrepreneurship. I’m constantly inspired by the women JAMIE HAYES in the group who work in many different facets of design—interior architecture, product design, graphic design, and metalwork. We share knowledge, resources, and ideas. It’s such a gift to learn from other women. And it’s a great place to share both successes and challenges.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. Working with Chicago Fair Trade to help pass a City of Chicago ordinance mandating that city workers’ uniforms be made without the use of sweatshops.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS…” My love of local music! Our city has and has always had amazing music from jazz to soul to house.

BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE.

We learn most from our mistakes and we gain confidence in overcoming problems. I’m much more willing to take risks. I’m no longer so worried about getting everything right on the first try.

SMITA SHAH

DANIELLE ROBAY

PRESIDENT AND CEO, SPANN TECH

CO-HOST, WCIU’S THE JAM

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU.

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU.

Professionally, Indra Nooyi. I saw her speak at the Economic Club of Chicago—the intellect, balance and grace of her personality—seriously. She was quoting The Devil’s Dictionary and talking about playing the guitar and her children… and, of course, she is the CEO of Pepsi.

Barbara Walters, Robin Roberts, Joy Behar, Jane Pauley, Andrea Mitchell, Giuliana Rancic, Oprah (her SOUL and ability to connect cannot be duplicated!), Chelsea Handler, and Sophia Bush.

Personally, I am inspired by moms— working and stay-at-home—but especially single moms. Rain or shine, healthy or sick, good day or bad day—they do it.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. Being a champion for women and women’s voices as co-host of WCIU’s The Jam!

FAVORITE THING TO DO FOR A NIGHT OUT IN THE CITY. Definitely go to a show! The theatre in our city is INCREDIBLE-—we have such talented artists. I try to support the theatre community as much as possible and I leave on an high every time I leave a show!

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” My GRIT…or my 847 gold necklace by Patty Rodriguez.

SMITA SHAH

BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. “Build roots. If you don’t build roots when you’re young you will topple over later.” —Steve Carlston, GM of NBC Los Angeles. DANIELLE ROBAY

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. We did an EEO count and found that we had 50 percent minorities and women. We weren’t BRIDGET COUGHLIN looking for it, just hiring the best people we could. And it was there—so amazing.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” I love Chicago pizza. BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. When you are young and start a business, you are given a lot valuable advice. However it can be confusing, so the best advice I have gotten was to take advice, but it is up to you to ‘take it’ or ‘throw it in the garbage.’ You have to use your own judgment.

BRIDGET COUGHLIN CEO, SHEDD AQUARIUM

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU. My female colleagues in the Museums in the Park and other cultural attractions. I learn so much from them on profound issues like Board relations around hard topics or simply a good book to read. In Chicago, nonprofits collaborate and share. This open-access type model makes our cultural organizations stronger.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. In 2017, Shedd Aquarium changed our access model moving Illinois discount days to be Illinois free days. It was the right business decision and the right thing to do for our community but it was really complicated to implement and sustain operationally.

FAVORITE SPOT FOR A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT. Wow, I need a favorite place! Right now the best spot has been Girls’ Night In. Being new to the city, I am still meeting lots of new people and so far the best has been being invited to people’s homes or inviting them over to my home to come sit on the couch and chat (over a glass of good red wine).

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS…” Since moving almost two years ago I am thrilled with how the people of Chicago come out of winter hibernation and get outside!

My mom, Mamie Til, Shirley Chisholm, Nina Simone, all the women who have and who are pursuing their dreams, and have fought for equality; because with doing that, I know they have had many battles to fight, and walls to tear down. We continue to function with a strong perseverance.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT.

I’m proudest of my first film, the first film I directed, and still having the opportunity to connect with people through emotions.

FAVORITE SPOT FOR A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT. Summer House and Gilt Bar.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” no ketchup on my hotdogs.

JOSEPHINE LEE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, CHICAGO CHILDREN’S CHOIR

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU. I am constantly humbled and inspired by the young women in our programs across the city. The potential I see in these students, as young as eight, at every rehearsal and performance is enough to give anyone hope for the future of this city, country and world.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. I’ve been with Chicago Children’s Choir for most of my career, starting as an in-school conductor in 1999. The founding mission of the choir is so simple, but as relevant today as when it was founded during the height of the Civil Rights Movement: to bridge cultural divides between youth. I am most proud of the retention of this mission as we’ve grown. Today, Chicago Children’s Choir is one of Chicago’s Premiere cultural institutions—performing with worldclass artists and traveling the world. But our central focus for our nearly 5,000 students now remains the same as it was when we were one choir in Hyde Park.

FAVORITE SPOT FOR A NIGHT OF SELF-CARE. AIRE Ancient Baths is my go-to.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. I feel proud of and grateful for my work with the Museum of Contemporary Art, with whom I’ve co-produced two large-scale events— Prime Time, the museum-wide party when we booked Jamila Woods, Noname and more elevating femme artists and aesthetic, and the MCA’s 50th Anniversary weekend, when we booked literally hundreds of Chicago artists to highlight the diverse and dynamic cultural landscape of Chicago. Having the opportunity to connect local artists to big platforms such as institutions like the MCA is such a special honor. I love seeing artists thrive and grow in their practice and reach.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS…” my strong work ethic. Chicagoans are some of the most industrious and dedicated you’ll find; we’re not above putting in the work and generous with our time and resources.

DEANA HAGGAG FOUNDER, UNITED STATES ARTISTS

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU.

You can feel the healing there. You go and are completely transported.

Moms! Many of my closest friends have had babies in the last few years and I am in complete and utter awe of their superhero skills.

THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” that I revel in the beautiful diversity

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. I love the people I work with!

of this city.

We have a dreamy team and I feel proud to have played any part in bringing them together.

KRISTEN KAZA FOUNDER, NO SMALL PLANS PRODUCTIONS

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU.

The women in my orbit are my inspiration. My friends and collaborators (often one and the same) are entrepreneurs, artists, makers and hustlers. I value a collaborative over competitive spirit and intention both in personal and professional relationships. The women who are currently really motivating me are those who have made an unapologetic commitment to their practice and mission.

FAVORITE SPOT FOR A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT. Recently, I’ve loved Lost Lake on the border of Avondale and Logan Square. Who doesn’t need a tiki bar in the winter?

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” my profound affinity for hot dogs. BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. Say thank you! And send a card when you can!

ALICIA DRISKILL FOUNDER AND CEO, EVOLVEHER

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. Launching evolveHer is definitely my biggest accomplishment. Creating something in your career that not only actualizes your own vision, but provides a platform for women to connect and collaborate is very fulfilling. So many women and men have reached out to share their support of a dedicated space that empowers the women of Chicago. I’m thrilled to bring this to the community.

FAVORITE SPOT FOR A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT. I love the back patio at RM Champagne Bar in

at “The Jewels”… but maybe the most Chicago thing about me is that while I have this nice, fancy TV job and a great manicure, I am not above dragging furniture out to the street to save my parking space. Hey, if I dig it, I “dibs” it.

had the pleasure and privilege to build and lead and the impact we collectively have had. I always strive to leave an organization better than I found it and the only way to do that is to set the vision, bring the right people around the table, and go execute.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS…” The Cubs! My husband is from St. Louis

FAVORITE SPOT FOR A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT. I’ve lived in Chicago since 1998 and love

and is a huge Cardinals fan so we have a little bit of a rivalry in our house.

BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE.

Make bold decisions. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the “what if’s” and to over-analyze every detail, but most people don’t regret taking the big leaps—they typically regret waiting so long to do it!

TYRA MARTIN SENIOR PRODUCER, WGN

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. I’ve been with the most watched television show in the third market in the country for 20 years. That’s very rare, but also very Chicago. This is a working town. I’m at a legacy station. There’s a lot of honor and nostalgia that goes along with our call letters. But it is absolutely not lost on me, that I’m a 20 year veteran, who happens to be a black woman. Being me in the meetings, hallway conversations and decision making makes a difference. We are certainly all more alike than we are different, but when different voices come together, THAT is how harmony is created.

FAVORITE SPOT FOR A GIRL’S NIGHT OUT. When I can stay awake late enough, I want to get out with friends to walk and eat and laugh. Chicago is beautiful at night and unmatched for people watching.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” I love House music, I shop for groceries

exploring all the nooks and crannies of the city. My three favorite places are Lincoln Park Zoo, Steppenwolf Theater and Wrigley Field. Each feeds personal passions— support of animals, great cultural enrichment, and hanging out with friends at the ballpark.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS…” that I am never afraid of the cold or the wind! Being raised in Milwaukee and spending most of my adult life in Chicago—I’m a true Midwesterner. The values that Chicagoans embody—to support one another, to believe that a win for one of us is a win for all of us, and to always be kind are ones that I try to live every day.

BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. My mom told me that my life story will be built from the choices that I make day-to-day, year-to-year, and that I should act like an owner in everything I do. Figure out what is important to you over time—not necessarily what others think is important). Make intentional choices that bring you the greatest personal happiness. You may want to walk down a path that everyone around you thinks is crazy or risky. If you have conviction, make the brave choice and take it.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. Becoming CEO of The Hatchery Chicago. I get the opportunity to work with my favorite people—food and beverage entrepreneurs— while also getting to make impactful decisions that will change the future of food innovation in Chicago and help create job opportunities in under-served communities.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” The most Chicago thing about me is my desire to wear summer clothing the second the temperature hits 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED. The best professional advice I have received is to just do! Like most women, I have suffered from the feeling of impostor syndrome. I was always a perfectionist and wanted to be 100 percent prepared for every challenge that came my way. It was only when this was brought to my attention that I realized I was making excuses and missing opportunities. As women, we often don’t give ourselves enough credit and rarely like to deem ourselves as experts. I have spent my whole life trying to understand as much as possible about the food and beverage industry. I still have much to learn, but I have equally as much to share and am thrilled to be in the position I’m in today.

AUTUMN MERRITT

AUTUMN MERRITT CO-OWNER, SIR & MADAME

THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU. My mother, mother-in-law, daughter and tribe of girlfriends continuously inspire me in all aspects of my life.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. I am proud of the ability to operate a business and maintain a professional role as Membership Manager at Soho House.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. I’m most proud of the fact that I forged my way on my own for eleven years before officially joining the family business in 2014. Prior to coming back to Smithe I held various account management roles at FCB and Leo Burnett, and then I took a sales management job within Microsoft’s advertising group. Professionally, although it’s an obvious choice, I’ve looked up to Oprah Winfrey for as long as I can remember. From her humble beginnings, to her continuing to break every glass ceiling imaginable, and of course her incredible willingness to give back, she is truly unstoppable and undeniably a role model to all women. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is definitely a woman who inspires me professionally and personally. She has dealt with a bustling career, juggling motherhood’s demands and experiencing extreme loss. I have learned a lot from her grace and honesty. I am also very inspired by my two female mentors, Wendy Levi Lienhart who encouraged me into PR and has battled cancer twice with humility and fierceness and Janet Cabot who taught me everything about grace and class.

PROUDEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT. Creating a business that is focused first on the value of KINDNESS above all else. I love standing up for that in our society—we all need more of it. It’s free. It makes you feel good. It makes the recipient feel REALLY good.

“THE MOST CHICAGO THING ABOUT ME IS...” my agency. We work with the biggest and best companies, personalities and brands in the city and I’m so proud to be a Chicagoan. We get to work with the Mayor’s office a lot and that’s always an honor. I’m Chicago’s publicist—I go everywhere telling people how proud I am to be a Chicago girl.

BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE.

Richard Melman, Chairman of Lettuce Entertain You, once told me that before I grew my company too quickly, I should only hire people that reflect my values and vision for my company. He made me write them down. I defined my values as kindness, creativity, passion, hustle and integrity and now I hire/develop my team based on those five values! He has the best advice always and I’m so lucky to have him in my corner. He jokes that he’s MY publicist.

COOL for KIDS Dining out with kids in the city can be tricky. One missed nap can wreck everything, drawing disapproving stares from diners trying to enjoy their wine pairings. No worries- here are three spots that city-dwelling families can enjoy.

HERITAGE RESTAURANT AND CAVIAR BAR

With a kid’s menu for breakfast, brunch as well as snacks, sides and entrees, this Humboldt Park destination is a place that little ones can approve of while offering mom and dad a dose of cool in the process. The bite-sized breakfast sandwich sliders are tailor-made for a lazy Saturday morning. 2700 West Chicago Avenue, heritage-chicago.com

BAPTISTE & BOTTLE

Nestled inside the Conrad Hotel, this restaurant has a special kids’ menu and they take breakfast up a notch by offering a free Kids’ Amuse starter and a free bowl of cereal for children. Busybodies can occupy themselves with Wikki sticks as well as a Conrad Chicago teddy bear, while waiting on their plate of pancakes to arrive. 101 East Erie Street, 20th Floor, baptisteandbottle.com

NICK’S PIZZA AND PUB

In the pantheon of easy, family-friendly places, the neighborhood pizzeria always ranks near the top. Nick’s boasts an extensive menu, including lots of dishes perfect for tiny hands. A recent visit in the early evening found kids actually running around with not even one instance of side-eye in the place. 2434 West Montrose Avenue, nickspizzapub.com 50

PAYING IT FORWARD WHITNEY’S WOMEN SPRING IS UPON US AND SO IS BUSY SEASON FOR ONE AMAZING NONPROFIT MAKING THEIR MARK NOT ONLY IN CHICAGO BUT ALSO ACROSS THE GLOBE. MEET

Beth McCostlin

THE MIDWEST MANAGING DIRECTOR FOR UNICEF USA, WHO’S ON THE MISSION TO SAVE THE WORLD. Interview by Whitney Reynolds HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH UNICEF? Trick or Treat for UNICEF, of course! When I was in High School I was really active with Key Club (a service organization under the Kiwanis International family) and was fortunate to serve in leadership positions on the local, state and national level. In addition to partnering around Trick or Treat for UNICEF, we also raised funds to help eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD). At the time it cost only five cents to help protect a child globally against IDD—and for me, it was my first introduction to this concept of global development and that just pennies could absolutely save and protect lives! I grew up in a pretty small town in northern Illinois—so this sense of global connection was life changing for me! Fast forward, and I joined the UNICEF USA team in Chicago six years ago and have been working to fundraise, educate our community and advocate on behalf of children with our friends and supporters across the Midwest.

HOW ARE YOU CHANGING THE WORLD? I’m one of those lucky people who gets to work in my dream job! I’m grateful every day that my job is to help connect Chicagoans’ and Midwesterners’ commitment to make the world a better place for children through philanthropy and action with our extraordinary UNICEF colleagues and partners who are on the ground in 190 countries doing the work. And at home, I’m the mom of a five-year-old and three-yearold! My husband and I take our responsibility to help them grow and be thoughtful and kind little citizens very seriously. We try to talk a lot about how we can make our world more beautiful and what it means to be helpers. WHO’S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE? My awesome husband—because he’s an awesome dad and challenges me to be a better mom. My parents and grandparents—my whole childhood my parents and grandparents were always running to meetings for the boards they served on or events in support of our church and community. It comes to me as no surprise now, that I ended

up in nonprofit work and that I’ve spent now over 50 percent of my life either serving on or supporting volunteer boards! QUOTE YOU LIVE BY? The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In college I framed of poster of it and it has since followed me from every dorm, apartment, job, cube, office since then! HOW CAN PEOPLE JOIN THE MISSION? There are many ways to join our movement to put children first: advocate, volunteer, donate. Know the issues affecting children. Join us at the Gala. Call your legislator to advocate for children. Get involved with Kid Power. Each one is crucial to helping UNICEF ensure that every child has a safe and healthy childhood. cw For more ways to get involved, please visit unicefusa.org/help

OneGoal is a coalition of teachers, students, school leaders and education advocates working to close the college degree divide that prevents millions of students from accessing a life of choice and opportunity. “The impact of OneGoal on my school has been huge. We have a group of scholars who are so excited and hopeful about school who hadn’t been before joining OneGoal. Now everyone wants to be in the program!”

Sasha Fawaz OneGoal Program Director at Catalyst Maria Charter School

WHY ONEGOAL?

THE NEXT GENERATION NEEDS MORE, NOW.

Today, high school students from low-income communities—the vast majority of whom are students of color—face enormous systemic barriers to attend and complete college. OneGoal was built by, and is led by, teachers who see, every day, that their students have the ability and talent to succeed. We believe the college graduation gap is a solvable problem, and we can’t rest until all students—not just a select few—have a real opportunity to earn a college degree, and the life that comes with it.
