As we reach the finish line of another winter in the city, we hope that you are as excited as we are by the alreadylonger days and the promise of what lies ahead in the coming spring!

The best part of my job is being able to meet so many incredibly talented and ambitious women. For our first 20 on Top feature, we selected 20 women in Chicago who are on top of their game professionally-—across many fields, all making a mark. Our cover star, Revel Group Co-founder and CEO, Britt Whitfield, shines brightly on the local event scene, producing some of the city’s most spectacular soirées in Revel’s breathtaking venues.

The ongoing dialogue started by the #MeToo movement has a voice in Illinois—President-elect of the National Council of State Legislators Toi Hutchinson. In a story by Chicago Woman contributor Becky Carroll, Hutchinson stresses the importance of the inclusion of women all of backgrounds in the discussion about sexual harassment and what can be done to arrive at viable solutions.

You might have noticed that we have been quite busy at Chicago Woman. Along with the magazine, we have put together a series of events that will bring our editorial to life and help strengthen the CW community. On March 20th, we are hosting our second Beautious event, an evening of beauty and style that is perfect for a girl’s night out. We are also beyond thrilled to announce our biggest event yet, Covet Market. Launching on May 6th, Covet will bring together some of the city’s best local makers and creatives—for a day of shopping, entertainment and amazing food in partnership with Chicago’s own culinary incubator, The Hatchery. February 4 – June 24, 2018 The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center presents the Midwest debut of “Speak Truth to Power,” a major touring exhibition based on the book, “Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World” by Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights.

The photographic exhibition will highlight the experiences of over 40 courageous “Upstanders” and urges visitors to take action against human rights violations.

March 3 – September 23, 2018 This free admission exhibition will feature 36 original panels of the monumental mural created in 1989 by internationallyacclaimed artist Keith Haring with the assistance of 500 Chicago Public School students in Chicago’s Grant Park.

The mural is a reflection of Haring’s incisive draftsmanship and symbolic characters. Presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in partnership with the Chicago Public Schools, the exhibition will also feature a collection of photographs, correspondence, designs, plans, t-shirt drawings, and much more.

MUMMIES AT THE FIELD MUSEUM March 16, 2018 – April 21, 2019 See mummies as you never have before in this rare, close-up look at mummies from the two places in the world with the longest and most interesting mummification traditions: ancient Egypt and ancient Peru. Mummies concludes its highly successful national tour to open at home in Chicago. Composed entirely of objects from The Field’s own collection, the exhibition includes 14 mummies, exquisitely painted coffins, stone sarcophagus fragments, ceramics, mummified animals, and mummy masks. Visitors will also be able to virtually explore the contents of never-opened Peruvian mummy bundles to discover the individuals within: children, mothers, and the objects their families lovingly buried with them. Each story uncovered paints a picture of people from a different time.

In my role at the Women’s Business Development Center, I counsel a wide range of business leaders on how they can lead their teams to success. In my role, I’m often asked how business owners and executives can ensure women are given equal voice, recognition, and support in the workplace. While broader safeguards and programs are needed to ensure equality in the workplace—including the implementation of public policies designed to support women and other underrepresented populations on their professional journey—the path to equality starts with an organization’s leadership.

3 keys to diversity 1. RECOGNIZE IDEAS AND OPINIONS. Consciously recognize the ideas and opinions of each member of your team.

Develop and implement strategies for engagement and then give credit when their insights lead to team success.

2. ENCOURAGE DIALOGUE. Allow for open and honest dialogue within your team. Whether identifying areas for improvement, illuminating unintentional inequities, or simply addressing miscommunication between team members, encouraging honest conversations in a safe environment will make your team stronger.

3. APPRECIATE DIVERSITY. Everyone on your team has something unique to offer. There is value in differences, so welcome and seek out the diversity of opinions and perspectives in your own organization in order to make your team more representative and— ultimately—more successful. cw

As President-elect of the National Council of State Legislators, she is fast becoming a national voice on this issue. And she’s urging legislative colleagues to continue elevating this issue across the country.

“As much as some folks may want to turn the page, we aren’t going away. #TimesUp is about moving from saying #MeToo to what are going to do about it? And, how can we ensure that people without the economic security and privilege it unfortunately takes to fight publicly aren’t left behind. As far as making sure this stays relevant, it’s about no longer tolerating the way things are. I love this quote: ‘I don’t want to accept the things I cannot change. I want to change the things I can’t accept’.”

To truly bring this change to everyone, Hutchinson’s advice to her colleagues and allies is the same.

“We need to keep an eye toward diversity, bipartisanship, and an acknowledgment that sexual harassment also exists across the LGBTQ spectrum. Those of us who live in the intersections of race, class, and gender know that racist behavior can be sexualized and sexist behavior can be racialized.”

As a woman of color and a mother, she’s as vigilant that the burden to change the pervasiveness of sexual harassment cannot be left to women alone.

“It also has to be about teaching men not to harass or assault. I have two sons and a daughter. The one thing I want them all to know, is that an educated, empowered, passionate, strong woman is nothing to fear. That’s something to celebrate. And that is just as important for my sons to know as it is for my daughter to own.”

Her hope is #TimesUp serves not only as a unifying movement for men and women, but for everyone across the economic landscape. “What we are seeing is a reckoning, from low-wage workers in retail, hospitality, and the foodservice industry to entertainment and politics. The days of living under a rock are gone.” cw

COMMUNITY WHATS NEXT FOR #METOO? Few could have predicted the expose in the New York Times detailing Harvey Weinstein’s history of sexual harassment would explode into a national “reckoning” on sexual harassment, prompting a flood of stories from women in Hollywood and national media, to women in Chicago’s own Ford factory. But as the dust settles, we are left with the question: where do we go from here?

Much of the conversation around harassment has focused on well-known and influential women. Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) and our grantees believe that improving the lives of all women starts with the most vulnerable among us. Any solution to the problem of sexual harassment must include low-wage women, who are six times more likely to experience gender-based violence in their lifetime, compared to high-income women.

In 2012, CFW grantees from the anti-violence and labor movements came together in the Coalition Against Workplace Sexual Violence to explore opportunities to work together to improve the safety and well-being of working women in Chicago. As a result: two members of the Coalition founded Healing to Action“ to support

worker leaders in developing meaningful responses to gender violence in their communities.”

Worker-led solutions to gender-based violence are critical, says Healing to Action co-founder Karla Altmayer. These diverse strategies include the incorporation of sexual harassment training into workforce development programs for the restaurant industry, where at least 66 percent of women workers report experiencing sexual harassment. Another focus is the development of a leadership initiative for survivors of domestic violence within the labor movement as well as increasing workers access to legal representation through partnerships with legal aid organizations.

While the majority of low-wage workers are women (69 percent of workers earning less than $10 an hour are women, according to the National Women’s Law Center), the leadership of labor movements is still largely male.

Based on worker input, Healing to Action is also looking at ways “to empower men to help and support women, [with] concrete tools to talk about the issue with other men,” says Altmayer. cw

WHAT ARE THREE THINGS YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF SINCE STARTING YOUR BUSINESS? I am as smart as I thought I was; resourceful, too. I am far more patient than I thought I was. And, I am more ambitious than even I thought I was… It can often be rather difficult to turn my brain off while contemplating future possibilities related to the food industry in general and related to my business specifically.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY DURING THE LAUNCH OF YOUR BUSINESS? Yes. I would have marketed the café ad nauseum prior to opening in an effort to create as much buzz as possible. I would have also put more processes in place prior to opening (i.e., policies, procedures, work flows, etc.) I had some of this, but clearly not enough. I would have sought more contractor references to avoid unnecessary issues and construction delays. I would have spent more money on recruiting the best staff possible rather than relying as heavily as I did on friends and family to save a bit.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN WHO ARE CONSIDERING STRIKING OUT ON THEIR OWN? First, do it!

everyone’s opinion. Women, myself included, tend to seek too much outside input. Don’t get in your own way. Just go for it!

Second, be very careful who you speak to about your goals and plans. More importantly, be careful who you listen to.

Unfortunately not everyone will be happy for you, especially if your dreams come to fruition and theirs do not or are not. Do seek advice but do so from those who are successfully doing what you aspire to do.

WHAT IS THE MOST INVALUABLE RESOURCE FOR YOU AS AN ENTREPRENEUR? A great lender such as LISC! They have been an amazing partner for me.

Access to capital is vital to a new business, so partner with a lender who understands that. A lender whose mission and vision aligns with yours. A lender who sees

your vision and supports your dream is vital to your overall success. LISC did that for me.

Start-up costs can present a financial strain. You must have enough cash to succeed which can mean the difference between moving forward, staying at ground zero or possibly failing. Choose to move forward with a great lender.

A great staff ranks as high as access to capital. When you are a start-up, a passionate entrepreneur, it can be challenging to hire individuals who see your vision as plainly as you do. It is imperative to hire individuals who will ride the wave with you through the rough period; not always easy. It’s cliché but good help truly is hard to find.

Remember also to share the rewards with those who help you build, grow and realize your dream. cw

Grace Hou PRESIDENT OF WOODS FUND Chicago Women in Philanthropy will honor Grace Hou, President of Woods Fund at their annual luncheon on March 24th. Hou, and CWIP leaders, talk to Chicago Woman about Woods Fund and being catalysts for positive change in Chicago.

We witnessed a lot of upheaval regarding immigration and race relations in 2017. What kept you going every day and how important was it for Woods Fund to be impactful in these areas? I think what we witnessed was an uncovering of the underlying animus and hatred that has been directed toward immigrants and other communities of color for decades. There were certain segments of the population well aware of the white supremacists among us, but many of us who weren’t directly impacted by it and weren’t watching for it. But in the midst of all the divisive rhetoric and hateful actions, what keeps me going is knowing that I am on the side of humanity, that I am a small part of a large resistance, and that we are the antidote to hatred and othering. At Woods Fund Chicago, we actively support organizations and people who are every day fighting the brutality of structural racism and poverty. For me and for them, there is not an option to stop ‘going’ because we believe in justice and equity for all. The work of Woods Fund is critically important because—regardless of what the political climate is—community organizing is democracy and ensures that those most impacted by policies have a voice and a say.

We live in one of the most multicultural yet segregated cities. How does the work at Woods Fund help to bridge that divide and strengthen our city? Woods Fund Chicago is a philanthropic institution. Our primary objective is to fund the work of community and neighborhood organizations to engage their constituencies to action and to amplify their voices and stories. We fund several coalitions and collaborative efforts that bring together people and organizations from different parts of the city, from different faiths and races, and from different experiences and backgrounds. Through the work of our grantees, community organizers, and advocates—despite all of our differences, we are united in a fight for power to dismantle the de facto systems and structures that have for decades divided and oppressed these communities. We fight for a better city for all of us.

Over the next two years, Alexis and I learned the terrible story of mass euthanasia of cats and dogs in Chicago, and developed a solutions-based plan to address the plight of homeless pets and raise public awareness on the staggering number of pets that were being killed in silence at traditional shelters. In 1997, very few people knew that homeless pets were being killed. Virtually no one knew the extent that more than 42,000 cats and dogs would die that year in shelters. We founded PAWS Chicago that year as an advocacy organization to bring attention to the plight of homeless animals and engage the community in becoming the solution to pet overpopulation.

On May 30, 1998, PAWS Chicago was launched with an adoption event, Angels with Tails. The message that homeless pets needed to be saved was taken to the public. The event was held on the streets and in the boutiques of the Magnificent Mile where local businesses enthusiastically agreed to showcase the animals in their storefronts. That single event brought the plight of homeless pets to the foreground, leading to

Since our founding, I’ve continued to focus on bringing people into the animal welfare community and engaging them to take action in ways that help save homeless pets. From our thousands of volunteers, foster families and adopters to our outreach initiatives to the free and low-cost spay/ neuter and medical services we offer, we work to mobilize people to be the solution for homeless pets.

Since our founding, the community has reduced the killing by 80 percent. We are getting closer to our goal of a No Kill Chicago! cw

My animal welfare awareness moment occurred while rescuing a stray dog (I named Pippen) from the Greek island of Crete in June 1996. He would follow our family everywhere we went that summer, and stole my heart. I learned that Pippen would have been poisoned once tourist season ended, and was shocked that Greece would treat its animals with such cruelty. Pippen’s story inspired my daughter, Alexis to help homeless pets back home.

As a high school sophomore, Alexis signed up to volunteer at a local animal shelter to fulfill her community service requirement.

She was shocked when she learned that instead of saving pets, the shelter was replacing basic medical care with euthanasia.

A simple sneeze was a death sentence.

AGIORGITIKO RED WINE Hard to pronounce, the Agiorgitiko grape is indigenous to Greece and cultivated throughout the islands. Hearty and adaptable, it is a small, thick-skinned grape used to make inexpensive Greek export wine. It is also blended for a light, juicy rosé or full-bodied, bold red. Flavorful, fragrant, and very fruit forward, it goes beyond drinking with just Greek fare. Enjoy with flat bread pizza, aged cheeses and roasted meat.

BARRAIDA DOC RED WINE From the north-central region of Portugal and made from the Baga (“berry” in Portuguese) grape. Wines made with Baga are overlooked as the grapes were used for large volume bulk wines, including bargain-priced rosé. Oak-aged and blended with other varietals, it is affordable, fragrant, very food-friendly and matures nicely. Pair with a hearty stew or chili, soft goat cheese, even fresh tuna, bacalhau (cod), grilled octopus or squid.

TREBBIANO WHITE WINE Indigenous to central Italy and widely cultivated by the ancient Romans as they conquered Europe. This prolific grape is blended with other grapes and used in cognac and brandy. Dismissed by wine snobs due to its large volume, it produces ordinary to extraordinary wines. Several regions offer an acidic, crisp, medium bodied wine. Try a Trebbiano Abruzzese, Spoletino or Toscano. Enjoy alone as a single sipper, serve with grilled chicken or shellfish. cw

THE IMPORTANCE OF AFFECTION When working with couples, I frequently check-in with them about the presence of affection in their relationship.

I want to know, how frequently do they hug, kiss, hold hands, or make an affectionate gesture towards one another. In strained relationships, it is not uncommon to hear that there is little to no affection between partners.

by Dr. Anne Brennan Malec, PsyD, LMFT Common reasons that keep partners from engaging in physical and verbal affection include: lack of quality time, not being an “affectionate type” of person, not wanting to give their partner the wrong message (e.g.

“I am just being loving, which does not also mean that I want sex.”), he or she seems mad at me so I try to avoid them, being frustrated for being the partner who always initiates affection, or just not feeling very loving towards them. All of these reasons for avoiding affection can make sense in a given relationship, but with the research about the importance of affection in a relationship, this reasoning may be short-sighted.

Do you remember when you first met your partner? Do you then remember the building excitement of the first

touch with him/her? Recall those powerful feelings, that excitement of wondering when he or she would grab your hand. And when it finally happened, it usually did not disappoint, did it? Research has found that holding hands affects both our brains and our physical wellbeing, and our relationships.

A study out of UCLA reported that human touch leads to the release of oxytocin, which is known as “the love hormone”. Oxytocin is responsible for increasing feelings of compassion, trust, and generosity, while decreasing fear and anxiety. Pretty remarkable what such a simple and instinctual behavior can do. Touch also reduces pain because of the serotonin that’s released.

As infants show us with the grasping reflex, humans are hard-wired to connect. Handholding is instinctual.

Researchers have found that adults who fail to receive regular and consistent human touch are susceptible to developing depression and anxiety disorders. The Touch Research Institute (TRI) reported that the skin is a sense organ and needs stimulation. When fingers are interlaced the body can respond with one’s heart rate and blood pressure falling, which leads to increased feelings of relaxation.

What’s holding us back from embracing this? Today’s growing obsession with our phones and social media over personal physical contact may unintentionally be affecting this. So, what can we do to shift this paradigm?

It may be as simple as instilling in ourselves the mindfulness to outstretch a hand more often to those in our lives who matter most to us. One thing is certain: our entire bodies, from our nerves to our brains, respond positively to touch and crave it from the time we’re born. Whether it’s due to instinct, comfort, intimacy or love, touch brings us closer to each other both physically and emotionally—and is a necessity for our overall well-being.

As we’ve seen, humans are not only creatures of habit, we’re also creatures of comfort. We gravitate toward situations and people who make us feel as content and secure as possible. Besides feeling secure through touch, one can feel affection verbally. Verbal expressions of affection are the words you speak intended to validate your positive feelings of love. Make it a daily habit to express your thanks, gratitude, and appreciation for all that your spouse brings to your life. Challenge yourself to notice things your partner does to create a safe and secure home, bring home a paycheck, provide loving care for the entire family—and then tell them what it means to you.

Timely closure of contracts is essential, but one must also ensure that any business deal has the potential to be profitable. LIFE THROWS US CURVE BALLS. ARE YOU PREPARED? Twenty-one years ago, my parents got a divorce. While that seems like a pretty normal statistic, people affected by divorce know how terrible the experience is for a family.

To put it bluntly: it sucks.

Like many women going through the process, my mom was quickly faced with tons of legal fees and left financially devastated. She worked two jobs to ensure that my brother and I were okay. The lion was unleashed, and soon after, I started taking business classes at the local community college.

From there, I earned my degree in Business Economics at Penn State, and then had the pleasure of working for some of the best firms on Wall Street. I soaked up knowledge on how to understand the markets, built investment portfolios, received licenses and designations that provided me with the know-how to become a credible financial planner. All of this education gave me the tools to become financially independent and help my clients achieve their financial goals.

Today, I’m extremely proud to report that my mom has recently retired at the early age of 64. She has the highest credit score possible (honest to God!), ZERO debt, a paid-off house, and a sizeable nest egg to enjoy her golden years. I taught her to pay herself first, and save for the future. The best part: she listened.

HOW ONLINE DIVORCES FAIL

We live so much of our love lives online: meet our match, announce our relationship status, Evite friends to showers and weddings, get gifted with online registers, and plan honeymoons through brand-name travel sites.

What about legally ending a marriage online? It sounds very appealing and blessedly impersonal. Everyone dreads the messiness of he said/she said, the costs of legal fees, and the elongated pain and drama depicted in the epic movie “The War of the Roses.”

The fundamental problem with online divorces is that marriage is a legal relationship that carries legal rights and duties with it. Undoing that legal relationship is complex.

You do not want to wake up years later to find that the IRS or some other creditor has not been successfully dealt with by your divorce agreement and that the liability is still knocking at your door. Worse yet, you do not want to find that car or boat that you agreed to give up was involved in a major crash with your ex at the wheel and your name still on the title.

You may think lawyers are biased against online divorces because they are taking business away, but that is not true. The fact is that many of the online attempts to divorce create complicated clean-up work for lawyers.

Divorce procedures themselves differ from state to state and sometimes county to county, so the one size fits all model can frustrate and even sabotage your attempts to be civil and efficient. Somewhere between too much war and too risky a peace, there are good divorce solutions.

Choose your attorney carefully and work with them proactively to have the best outcome for you and your children. Be assured that the largest percentage of cases do settle. “The War of the Roses” was just a movie. Most couples will never experience that kind of drama.

New Tax Reform­— Answers to Common Questions At Calamos Wealth Management, we are committed to engaging and supporting women on sophisticated wealth planning topics while helping them proactively navigate their financial landscape. As women create and control an increasing share of wealth, their economic influence both at home and in the workplace continues to grow as well. To help women feel prepared and confident in their understanding of how the new Tax Act may affect them, below we have summarized some common questions and related answers:

Congress stated the new Tax Act would provide tax savings for all Americans. Is this the case? Although the new Tax Act may

benefit the majority of Americans, single taxpayers with income over $157,000 and married couples with income over $315,000 likely will pay higher taxes.

This result seems likely because these taxpayers previously spent more time in the 28% bracket before progressing into the 33% bracket. These same taxpayers now will spend less time in the lower 24% bracket before progressing into the 32% bracket while losing key itemized deductions that have been reduced or eliminated under the new Tax Act.

How has the primary mortgage interest deduction changed?

How does it affect a taxpayer’s current loan that exceeds the new limits? For taxpayers who had outstanding mortgages prior to December 15, 2017, primary mortgage interest remains deductible up to $1 million of principal. Certain mortgages on pending transactions also were

grandfathered under the prior rules.

This grandfather provision applies to those transactions under contract by December 15, 2017, purchased by January 1, 2018 and closed by April 1, 2018. New mortgages will be deductible up to principal amounts of $750,000.

For all purposes, primary mortgages apply to totals on primary and secondary homes combined.

Can taxpayers still deduct interest paid on a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC)?

Does this answer change if there is no primary mortgage but only a HELOC? Is the HELOC then considered a first position loan and thus tax deductible?

Likely no, in either situation. Under the new Tax Act, taxpayers only may deduct interest on primary mortgages, unless HELOC is used specifically for home improvements and is within deduction limits.

How has the estate tax exemption changed? The estate tax exemption has doubled under the

new Tax Act. Each taxpayer now has a personal estate tax exemption amount of $11.2 million; married couples can now shelter up to $22.4 million from estate tax. Congress will adjust these amounts for inflation over time. It is important to review your old estate plan.

State estate taxes may now present problems that did not exist before.

Even though a taxpayer may not be subject to the federal estate tax due to its higher exemption amount, that taxpayer may still be subject to a state inheritance or estate tax in light of significant changes Congress has made to estate tax laws over time since June of 2001. Those taxpayers should update their estate plans to account for their particular state laws to avoid triggering the applicable state estate tax prematurely.

Estate plans that use self-adjusting formulas should also be reviewed to ensure the resulting trusts and funding amounts still reflect intended results among beneficiaries.

We survived a recession, and our own inexperience, and all the trials of normal adult life and all the little disasters of owning a business. I think no matter how confident an entrepreneur is, there are these “woah” moments. I’m also proud that we have kept up the culture of fun and flexibility that drove me to start my own company in the first place.

THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR? Staying focused. I have a dog named Tada who acts like a living metaphor for how my brain works: “This smells good. There’s something shiny. Someone new is here. Everything is exciting.” I see the value of my own enthusiasm but it can make it harder for me to stay on task. Luckily my team appreciates my strengths and is patient about my weaknesses.

There are so many things I would have done differently— no amount of planning can protect you against setbacks. But the thing I would always, always do the same is what Clint (Chief Operating Officer) and I did the first time we booked a big job. We had been living on the change between our couch cushions (and my mom’s couch cushions, and the cushions of anyone still nice enough to let us in their house). We put our hearts and souls and asses on the line to land our first big one.

And that night we bought tickets to Ireland and lived like idiot kings for a week. It was irresponsible and debaucherous, and it was the exactly right thing to do.

The founding mission of the choir is so simple, but as relevant today as when it was founded during the height of the Civil Rights Movement: to bridge cultural divides between youth. I am most proud of the retention of this mission as we’ve grown.

Today, Chicago Children’s Choir is one of Chicago’s Premiere cultural institutions—performing with worldclass artists and traveling the world. But our central focus for our nearly 5,000 students now remains the same as it was when we were one choir in Hyde Park.

THE MIDWEST MANAGING DIRECTOR FOR UNICEF USA, WHO’S ON THE MISSION TO SAVE THE WORLD. Interview by Whitney Reynolds HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH UNICEF? Trick or Treat for UNICEF, of course! When I was in High School I was really active with Key Club (a service organization under the Kiwanis International family) and was fortunate to serve in leadership positions on the local, state and national level. In addition to partnering around Trick or Treat for UNICEF, we also raised funds to help eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD). At the time it cost only five cents to help protect a child globally against IDD—and for me, it was my first introduction to this concept of global development and that just pennies could absolutely save and protect lives! I grew up in a pretty small town in northern Illinois—so this sense of global connection was life changing for me! Fast forward, and I joined the UNICEF USA team in Chicago six years ago and have been working to fundraise, educate our community and advocate on behalf of children with our friends and supporters across the Midwest.

HOW ARE YOU CHANGING THE WORLD? I’m one of those lucky people who gets to work in my dream job! I’m grateful every day that my job is to help connect Chicagoans’ and Midwesterners’ commitment to make the world a better place for children through philanthropy and action with our extraordinary UNICEF colleagues and partners who are on the ground in 190 countries doing the work.

And at home, I’m the mom of a five-year-old and three-yearold! My husband and I take our responsibility to help them grow and be thoughtful and kind little citizens very seriously. We try to talk a lot about how we can make our world more beautiful and what it means to be helpers.

WHO’S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE? My awesome husband—because he’s an awesome dad and challenges me to be a better mom. My parents and grandparents—my whole childhood my parents and grandparents were always running to meetings for the boards they served on or events in support of our church and community. It comes to me as no surprise now, that I ended

up in nonprofit work and that I’ve spent now over 50 percent of my life either serving on or supporting volunteer boards!
