As we go to press, we are left wondering if spring forgot our address. But now that it is May, we are finally enjoying warmer weather and looking forward to summer. For this issue, we wanted to take the idea of the Summer of Love and turn it inward: loving ourselves, our bodies (the beach gets the body it gets and that’s just the way it is) and learning how to find love with someone special. We are thrilled to have gynecologist Dr. Lauren Streicher, entrepreneur Chris-Tia Donaldson and relationship expert Bela Gandhi on our cover and have them share their advice on loving ourselves just the way we are and finding the right partner. We are also excited about our Leadhership feature, where we talked to some of Chicago’s most accomplished executives about what it means to be a woman in a place of leadership. They share their experiences about charging forward when your confidence has been shaken, how to recruit more women for corporate boards and preparing girls for leadership roles. We hope that you will be inspired by their stories and encouraged to realize your own professional ambitions with confidence and purpose. While you are out and about enjoying the sun, we hope you will come celebrate all things health and wellness at our HealthKick event on June 23 and get your beauty game in check with us at our Beautious event on July 24. We absolutely love meeting our readers at our events and we thank you for your continued support of Chicago Woman. WHAT YOU CAN DO

Paid Maternity Leave by Maaria Mozaffar The United States ranks dead last in industrialized nations for paid maternity leave. Bulgaria gives about 46 weeks of paid maternity leave and New Zealand is moving to 22 weeks. The U.S. federal government does not guarantee any paid time off after the birth of a baby. But the is a silver lining is that states are allowed to create laws for such paid parental leave and Illinois currently offers four weeks. Leaders such as, Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand and Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, whose recent pregnancies have received much attention, are moving the conversation forward. As Illinois women, we have a golden opportunity to march towards policy change in our state. Here are four steps women can take to support and improve the family leave policies in Illinois:

1 2

Identify the advocacy groups in Illinois that are working on expanding maternity leave and decide how you can support them.

Identify the legislators that would support such a move and engage them in conversation on their thoughts of expanding paid maternity leave in Illinois.

3 4

Hold a town hall to educate the voters on the trends globally and around the country on maternity leave. Finally, be part of drafting a legislative initiative in conjunction with legislators and advocacy groups. They are always looking for new ideas.

Legislative victories are won by building coalitions and identifying clear goals. Women understand that they should never have to choose between their earning potential and obligations as a parent. For many the protection of pay is a necessity. Women also understand the value of bonding time between child and parent. All progressive societies should value work and family life equally. If one is out of balance, there is dysfunction in the same societal structures we want to protect the most. Women can be the key voice in bringing this balance to the women and families of Illinois. cw Maaria Mozaffar is a civil rights attorney, mediator and legislative consultant.

ENJOY THE GREENERY For those of us who love plants and the way they bring our spaces to life, getting them back to our homes can be a challenge. And then there is the matter of how to keep them alive and thriving? Plant delivery service Welltended has you covered on both fronts. Founder Carolyn Snider has five ways to help keep your new plants green and growing: LET THERE BE LIGHT A key consideration when bringing plants indoors is the amount of sun exposure in your space. The best thing that you can do for your houseplants is to mimic their natural, native environmental conditions as closely as possible. PLANTS NEED FOOD TOO Plants need water to survive and will eventually need fertilizer as well. The number-one cause of sad plant outcomes is over-watering, so take care to understand your plant’s optimal watering routine. THINK ABOUT YOUR PETS If you have pets, you’ll want to double check the ASPCA’s guidance for non-toxic plants for pets, which includes gorgeous options like the Parlor Palm and Haworthia succulent. CONSIDER THE CONTAINER Plants’ wellbeing can be elevated even further by choosing the right container for them to live in. Choose a planter that both looks beautiful. and has the appropriate drainage for the plant. CONTINUE THE LOVE One of the wonderful things about plants is that they’ll continue to grow and flourish, as long as you care for them. Regular maintenance— like wiping your plants’ leaves and pruning old growth—will help keep them thriving! cw

LIFE SMALL BUSINESS

Tips for Marketing on a Shoestring

THERE ARE ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES TO CONNECT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK. HERE ARE TOP FIVE SAVVY TIPS FOR MARKETING YOUR BRAND. by Antoinette Arnold

Influencer programs

Establish an ambassador program by providing product or services in exchange for blog posts, social media reviews, and giveaways. Look for micro-influencers—people who may not have high numbers of followers but have their community’s attention and engagement. If you happen to be in a more niche business, such as professional services, look to your referral network to cross promote on one another’s channels.

Branded giveaways Partner with complementary brands for a giveaway. People love free stuff. Teaming up with like-minded brands allows each brand to tap into each other’s following.

Se Habla Español

Create an event

If you don’t have a brick and mortar store but have products, team up with a retailer and host a trunk show showcasing new products. Host a fireside chat at an interesting venue. This idea can work for everything from foodrelated items to service-based businesses. The point is to get in front of your audience so they can meet the brains behind the brand.

A better way

Partner with local charities Find an organization that fits

Specializing in natural solutions for skin conditions, autoimmunity, fertility & more!

your target audience and partner with them on events, gift bag insertions, silent auctions, and more. Figure out which ones make the best sense for your business and make your move.

Niche events Participating in industry-specific or lifestyle events that attract your customer demographic gives your brand opportunities to meet and sell to your audience. Take advantage of hyper-local events that don’t break the bank. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to collect email addresses. cw Antoinette Arnold is founder of Authentic Noise, a boutique marketing communications and sales firm.

LIFE CAREER

5 Practices of Influential Leaders Great leadership changes the game. The amount of money invested in training and development for leaders across the country in a year totals about $70 billion. Yet, companies lose an estimated $398 billion due to bad leadership. Ask yourself: What’s the “bad leader budget” at your company? Read on for five tips to keep that budget in check. by Robyn Clark

1

Inspire change—keep things moving forward. When you take a leadership role, this is the job you sign up for. Nobody is hired as a leader to just babysit. You’re hired to move things forward and achieve new and better outcomes. Inspired people simply do and care more.

2 3

Promote learning and growth. Learning and growth develops your people and the organization. If you stay still, you end up going backward. People want to be with leaders who will take them forward. People choose their leader. We get assigned a boss, but we choose who to follow. Leadership is about influencing people and building a fan base. If you’re a leader people choose to follow, they get to be a better version of themselves, and that’s what everybody wants—a mission, powerful ideas, to make a difference, meaningful work.

4 5

Shared success matters. A leader is a steward who champions both the individual and the organization. The leaders who find that balance are the leaders who win. Self-awareness is mission critical. Self-reflect and think about: How do people experience you? How do people experience themselves when they are with you?

BANISH ACNE BREAKOUTS Acne is not necessarily a short-lived, teenage issue—it can be an extended struggle for many women filled with decades of frustration. As much as we’d like to think the right skin products or the right medication will make acne go away, it just doesn’t work that way. In order to experience long-term relief, you have to go after the root cause, which isn’t the same for everyone. Acne is an external expression of an internal imbalance that should not be brushed off as a cosmetic issue but rather looked into further. Tackling these factors can work wonders for controlling acne. by Dr. Shayna E. Peter GET ON TOP OF YOUR NUTRITION The role of healthy eating and nutritional status in acne is underestimated.

OPTIMIZE DIGESTIVE HEALTH Adopt lifestyle habits that promote healthy digestion and a healthy microbiome.

BALANCE HORMONES Work with your health care team to identify imbalances in your hormones.

MINIMIZE TOXIN EXPOSURE Skin care and personal care products can contain toxins that can be absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Addressing the above factors can work in tandem to keep breakouts at bay. A whole-person approach can improve acne with the side effect of greater health. The same treatment will not work for everyone with the same condition, so treatment approaches to acne sometimes have to be as individual as the person. Above all, in your journey toward clear skin, the goal should be health not perfection. Dr. Shayna E. WINE NOTES

beads BUBBLES fizz As the celebratory season starts, which sparkling wine is good for graduation? A spring wedding or summer solstice get together? Champagne, Cava or Prosecco? by Consuelo

It’s the season of celebrations—graduations, weddings and summer parties. Which sparkling wine to choose—Champagne, Cava or Prosecco? To be a sparkling wine it must be a natural result of the fermentation process. The grapes will influence flavor, the production method, skill and aging will affect price.

CHAMPAGNE must be produced in the Champagne region in northeastern France using the méthode champenoise-champagne method, This requires master blending of high quality grapes from different harvests and different Champagne vineyards giving it a higher price point. Many are aged a minimum of fifteen months and often up to three years. Champagne has fine beads not big bubbles, a complex, creamy body with almond, ripe peach and toast flavors. CAVA from the Spanish northern Catalonia region and often made from local grapes, is produced using the traditional method with secondary fermentation in the bottle for nine months. Refreshing, bright and very bubbly, with ripe apple, crisp citrus and juicy pear flavors, Cava has an excellent, price, quality ratio.

Martinez-Quattrocchi

PROSECCO from the north eastern Veneto region of Italy, continues to rise in popularity. Made from Glera grapes, the secondary fermentation uses large, sealed tanks called the Charmat method. It produces a light bodied, fizzy wine. Floral aromas with crisp green apple, ripe melon and juicy pear flavors. The large yields and minimum aging make it an affordable sparkling wine.

Consuelo Martinez-Quattrocchi is managing partner of Villa Gabriella, producers of certified organic balsamic vinegar, extra virgin Italian olive oil, and artisan crafted wines from Italy.

Whatever the budget or occasion, think about how your sparkling will be enjoyed. To maintain the fizz, serve sparkling wine chilled at 45°F. Do not store for more than one week, the flavors diminish at cold refrigerator temperatures. Not sure which sparkling to choose? Ask your trusted wine merchant for recommendations. cw

COLOR ME

happy You want to feel relaxed and happy in your space— whether its your home or office. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you choose your hues. by Maura Braun

WHAT COLORS DO I RESPOND TO? These should be colors that make you feel happy. Start by looking at your wardrobe. Colors that you are drawn to may be the right color for your home or office. Whether it comes in as an accent color or it is the overall wall color including in your interiors can make you feel productive, yet relaxed.

HOW DO I WANT TO FEEL? The psychology of color plays right into our emotions and can determine if we’ll have a relaxing and productive day or a frustrating day. For instance, colors with a red or yellow base promote positive emotions.

FROND to ROOT by Katie O’Reilly, Those of us who have ever tried their “green thumb” at gardening quickly realize it’s not as easy as it seems. That heirloom carrot batch we hoped would produce at least enough for summer use, yields barely enough for a garden salad. Plus, the time and care it takes to nurture a garden goes without saying. However, this humbling experience does gift us with something— appreciation for all parts of the plant. No longer are we willing to cut off those gorgeous green carrot tops and just discard them in the trash. These can be used as another gift from this precious plant. These fronds and leaves can be transformed into carrot top pesto or chimichurri when mixed with other herbs. So often we see the chef on TV just toss away the fronds of fennel and only use the bulb! At this I scream, “there so much flavor in those fronds.” Their vibrancy and licorice flavor are a perfect accent for any seafood dish. Take a close look at what you’re using and a closer look at what you’re not. Frond to root is the creative way to cook! cw Katie O’Reilly is Chef and Host of Katie O’s Food Carnival television show and Co-President, Kenmare Catering. TIPS & TRICKS EAT

Infuse Korean flavors and ingredients into crowd-pleasing favorites to entice even the pickiest of eaters into trying something new. Bo Saam Pulled Pork Sliders with jalapeños and sweet pickles are a great way to get the party started. For a more interactive experience, create a Korean taco bar complete with braised beef bulgogi, black pepper tofu, cucumber kimchi, and ssamjang (spicy-sweet Korean BBQ sauce). Snacks from a local Korean or Asian market (we love the new H-Mart in the West Loop) work nicely in an appetizer or dessert spread. They add an authentic touch and make pulling together a party that much easier. From shrimp chips to popsicles—the fun and vibrant packaging alone is enough to grab your guests attention.

DRINK Soju is a great liquor to add to your bar selection. It’s perfect chilled and served with citrus and your favorite mixer. We love a good selection of beers, but our favorite is Icing Grapefruit Sparkling Rice Brew. The insta-worthy cans are your new patio pounders for an alfresco summer night.

DESIGN Bright color is everything when designing your K-party— the more pinks, yellows, and oranges, the better. Mix prints, patterns and neons to energize the evening. Be bold and throw color on everything that will stand still—including tropical leaves.

GIFT Korean beauty masks are a thoughtful touch. Place a few of your favorites on a tray in the restroom as a cheeky and unexpected detail. Your guests will be thanking you the morning after what is sure to be an unforgettable night.

LOVING YOUR BODY by Lauren Streicher, M.D. As a gynecologist, the concept of “loving your body” takes on a slightly different perspective. Ok, a really different perspective. Fifteen years ago no one was particularly concerned with the appearance of her private parts as long as everything worked the way it was supposed to. Today, women are incredibly self-critical when it comes to the appearance of their genitalia. So what has changed? It’s simple. Pubic hairstyles. Along with the “less is more” trend comes the ability to clearly see what things look like and many women often spend an inordinate amount of time and energy worrying about the appearance of their external genitalia. At least once a week a woman asks if she looks “normal” and sometimes requests surgery to change the appearance. The most common procedure requested is a labioplasty, a plastic surgery to shorten the labia minora (the small lips that herald the entrance of the vagina.) Some women, when reassured that their labia are perfectly normal, still want a “trim” based on their idea of what is attractive. Some women avoid being sexually intimate since they think their labia are “too floppy.”

WHAT MEN THINK ABOUT THEIR PARTNER’S LABIA labia 57.1% “Ijustlovetheher way they are.” I don’t think 31% “about her labia.” “She has a labia?” 8.9% I wish they were 2.5% “shorter”

This is particularly the case for midlife women who are newly single, feeling insecure, and want to reinvent themselves. While there is no question that comfort with one’s genitals is associated with sexual confidence and enjoyment, I can assure you it is not necessary for women to go under the knife to have attractive genitals. Let’s face it. The average guy would probably flunk even the simplest quiz regarding the appearance of his partner’s parts. I found it hard to believe that men really were concerned with the length of their partner’s labia, so I decided to do a survey about what men think about their wife’s/ partner’s labia—see the results above! Clearly women’s perceptions say a lot more about how they want to look rather than preferences men have. Other survey questions confirmed that most men are completely unconcerned about the size of a woman’s breasts, butt, or thighs when it comes to being sexually attractive. What men do appreciate is a woman who is confident and clearly enjoys intimacy. And one more thing—in every survey, one thing was consistent: Attention to hygiene. So love your body as it is and take a shower. cw

LOVING YOURSELF, JUST THE WAY YOU ARE by Chris-Tia Donaldson

How one woman embraced herself and built a company Ten years ago, when I graduated from Harvard Law School and was preparing to start my first job at one of the biggest law firms here in the city of Chicago, I had a major problem. How was I going to wear my hair to work.? Like most black women, I straightened my kinky, curly hair using a chemical relaxer for the majority of my life in order to be seen as beautiful and to make my hair more manageable. However, this process was not only time consuming, but also expensive, painful, resulted in scalp burns, and exposed you to a wide variety of toxic chemicals. I thought there has to be a better way—a more natural way—and that’s how tgin was born. In my final year of law school, my intuition took hold and I decided to forego relaxers, opting to use heat to straighten my hair instead. At the time, I saw marked improvements in the strength and overall health of my hair, which was not being compromised chemically. Still, I longed to wear my hair in its curly state, but found the lack of products on the market and traditional ideas of what a professional black woman looked like in Corporate America (e.g., Claire Huxtable) to pose a significant challenge. As a result, I wore a wig for the first two years as a lawyer while I experimented with formulations for products that would allow me to wear my hair in its natural state. Despite putting in 80 hour weeks as an M&A lawyer, I was told during my first year review that I didn’t have what it took to be a lawyer at a top firm. When looking back on this experience, wearing a wig and not being able to be my authentic self were chief factors contributing to this outcome. From there, I moved on to another law firm, where I begin writing a book, Thank God I’m Natural: The

Ultimate Guide to Caring for Natural Hair. It provided women with the information and resources they needed to go natural. At no point did I think the book would go on to become an Amazon best-seller or be featured in USA Today, Essence, Black Enterprise and various other media outlets. The book proved to be groundbreaking, since this information was presented at a time when Facebook was in its early infancy and YouTube was just gaining traction. The book’s success took me across the country to different book signings, churches, hair expos, and libraries, where I spread the gospel of “loving yourself just the way you are” and amassed a large following online in the process. This grassroots community fell in love with the information we were providing, when, the requests for products grew louder, I listened. After partnering with a chemist, I launched a line of products called the tgin Moist Collection, which promised just three things—softer, moisturized, manageable hair. This was groundbreaking at the time, considering that the vast majority of products on the market where developed to help black women straighten their natural curls, not embrace them. cw

Summer is the perfect time to bring on new love, or to bring some sizzle to the relationship you already have. Heat things up this summer:

IF YOU’RE SINGLE Become Psychotically Optimistic This mindset gets rid of all of the negative beliefs/thoughts that we WON’T meet someone because we are too old, too heavy, too damaged, etc. Adopt a philosophy of optimism under any circumstances—and rewire our brains to say, “Love will come to me—it’s a when, not an if. ”

Get Outside All year long, we wish to get off of dating apps and meet people “in real life!” Summer is your chance to do that! Get ready for the amazing neighborhood festivals, Grant Park concerts, baseball games, you name it! Take off your headphones, put your phone in your purse, and look to meet people organically by smiling and making eye contact—the good old-fashioned way. Some things never get old. Make a Matchmaker’s Calendar Think about three people you can put on your calendar as your June, July, and August matchmakers. These should be three people you know well, who are well-connected, extroverted, and like connecting people. They are assigned to setting you up with at least one person during their month. It can work—a client did this and married Mr. June!

IF YOU’RE IN A RELATIONSHIP Date Night with 36 Questions (that lead to love) Psychologist Arthur Aron put together a list of 36 questions that total strangers could ask each other and fall in love within one session. The questions brought intimacy and vulnerability in an expedited fashion. It’s fun to have a date night—even if you’re already in love and ask each other the questions! AN INTERVIEW WITH

DEVIN W. BLACKBURN

With over a decade of experience in tax planning and structuring, Chicago-based tax attorney, Devin W. Blackburn, is busy fielding questions about the recent tax overhaul from longtime clients. Here are her insights on the changing tax laws.

When exactly does this go into place? The tax bill passed the House and Senate late December, was signed into law by President Trump on December 21, 2017 and applies to 2018 and beyond. In other words, you will see the impact on the 2018 return that will be filed in 2019. Now is the perfect time to have a conversation with an attorney or accountant to minimize the impact of new changes.

Corporations clearly got a tax cut, but what does this mean for small business owners? The corporate tax rate has been

reduced to a flat tax of 21%. But owners of pass-through entities can rejoice as well. Sole proprietors, S-Corporations, partnerships and LLCs will be able to deduct 20% of the total amount from taxable income—much better than the current regime which taxes pass-through income at the ordinary income tax rate of business owners. The downside: For owners of service businesses such as attorneys, accountants and doctors, the deduction is phased out if income exceeds $157,500 ($315,000 if married).

How will the new tax laws impact Chicagoans? While there are no changes specific to Chicago,

state and local taxes are no longer fully deductible. Beginning in 2018, state and local taxes are only deductible up to $10,000. With Cook County property taxes steadily rising, many homeowners pay more than $10,000 annually and will certainly be impacted by this new limitation.

THE EMOTIONAL SIDE OF WEDDING PLANNING

A DINNER PARTY FOR OUR TIMES By Cherilyn G. Murer

By Gemma B. Allen The month of June unmistakably reigns as the most popular month for weddings. Along with the event planning, consider gifting each other with relationship planning, too. 1) Premarital counseling is a plus, no matter how little or how short. One couple told me that all they had the time to do was to take an online compatibility quiz and talk through their differences, but even that helped. Ideally, two or three sessions with either a mental health professional or clergy is best. 2) Make time for those really hard discussions when the honeymoon is over…who will pay the bills; if and when you want children; what religion, if any, will you practice, and how much time will you spend with each other’s families. 3) Commit to having not only the best wedding, but also the best marriage. Often lost in the silver and crystal choices are heart-to-heart talks about how you will make decisions going forward. It really does not matter which determination-making protocol you agree to, as long as you both adopt the same one! 4) Repeat often the magic mantra of Communication, Compromise, and Compassion. 5) Face the fact that just the wedding itself is stressful. Forgive each other in advance for the drama of wedding jitters and for the ups and downs of the rest of your life to come. Actually, wedding planning itself can be good practice for marriage, since so many realities of life are involved: relatives, friends, control, financial consequences and, of course, each of your own unique psyches. If you can make the time while wedding planning to weave in emotional planning for your lives together, you are much more likely to live happily ever after.

If you believe that careers are built on relationships and exposure to different ideas, a business dinner party is a great facilitator. Whether casual or formal, the common element of a dinner party is camaraderie and conversation. Food and wine enhance the experience, but it’s the integration and connection of people that will make it memorable. Start by deciding on a location. The most intimate setting is your home when you pull back the veil and reveal the personal side of your life and lifestyle. A restaurant is a perfectly acceptable option, especially one that reflects your personality. Setting a date in today’s hectic society can be difficult, but it’s easier if you keep the guest list to 8 to 12 people. Select guests who have a common interest such as love of travel or are in similar industries. I typically call a few people individually and offer two optional dates before committing to a date and time, then follow up with an email. When planning the menu, make sure you know any dietary restrictions of your guests. As the hostess, it’s up to you to guide the conversation, and it shouldn’t be all business. Mention a story in the paper or talk about a major event that may be coming up. While politics has traditionally been off limits, I believe it’s fine to discuss current events. If your guests voice strong opinions, all the better! Should you offer to provide information or make third-party connections, be sure to follow up. Finally, smile a lot and have fun, and your guests will too. And don’t be surprised if your reputation for hosting successful dinners sets you apart enough to win that new piece of business or a job promotion.

Two Important Changes to Illinois Spousal Maintenance By Christina Castrejon, CFP® and Jennifer L. Lavin, P.C.*

Divorce often causes significant financial stress. Anyone contemplating or litigating a divorce needs to prioritize financial planning.

Christina Castrejon, CFP is a Wealth Advisor with Calamos Wealth Management, where she advises individuals and families on strategies to pertaining to investments and wealth planning. She was named to Investments News “40 Under 40” Class of

Without in-depth financial planning, a divorcing spouse risks making uninformed decisions about how to handle divorce settlement funds. For example, in one extreme case, a woman who received a large monetary settlement left the entire sum sitting in cash—for years, foregoing substantial gains achieved in financial markets during that period.

Soon, that carrot will be gone. Instead, spousal maintenance payments will no longer be tax deductible for the maintenance payor, and no longer included in the taxable income of the maintenance payee. This is a permanent change to federal tax law that applies to divorces finalized on or after January 1, 2019.

Financial planning should be an early priority in any divorce proceeding, not merely after the fact. Spousal maintenance, formerly called alimony, is one key focus. In Illinois, judges first determine whether spousal maintenance is appropriate and then, if so, what the amount and duration should be.

We do not yet know how Illinois law will adjust to these changes. Illinois currently employs a spousal maintenance formula that judges may apply, or from which judges may deviate, after having first determined that maintenance is appropriate. This formula is based upon the old tax treatment of maintenance. Illinois may update its maintenance formula to “catch up” to federal tax law, but how and when remains uncertain.

Often, divorcing spouses negotiate a marital settlement agreement about spousal maintenance. A recent change in U.S. federal tax law has the potential to make those negotiations more contentious. As of January 1, 2019, federal tax law will no longer allow the spouse paying spousal maintenance to deduct the maintenance payments from gross income when calculating federal taxes owed. Previously, that tax deduction has sometimes been the “carrot” that has led a reluctant spouse to agree to maintenance payments.

In the meantime, financial planning during divorce proceedings is especially important. For example, a financial advisor can run scenarios to determine likely outcomes from various combinations of asset divisions and maintenance schedules to help women ensure a proposed settlement has the potential to support the standard of living during the marriage. Another important change to Illinois maintenance law involves both the income threshold pursuant to the main-

Before 2018, if the court determined that a maintenance award was appropriate, judges typically used the Illinois maintenance formula where the spouses’ combined gross annual income was less than $250,000. In 2018, this income threshold increased from $250,000 to $500,000. This means that more Illinois high-net worth couples may find the maintenance formula applicable to their circumstances. Additionally, in 2018 the Illinois calculation of the duration of maintenance changed to incorporate more gradual increases in a potential maintenance award based upon the duration of the marriage. Taking the emotion out of some business decisions. I am passionate about what I do and otherwise wouldn’t be doing it. That being said, in business and being a leader there are often tough decisions that have to be made. JENNIFER I try first to be compassionate NICKERSON and of course think VICE PRESIDENT through consequences, OF RESTAURANT OPERATIONS, LEVY RESTAURANTS but I also have to filter decisions based on what is best for the business. Communicating such decisions is sometimes challenging and still to this day can weigh on me.

When I first became CEO of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) 20 years ago, I inherited an organization that was in financial freefall due to mismanagement. As a first-time CEO, I was immediately faced not only with nearly $1 million in debt, but with the task of communicating this issue with the membership at large. It was clear that transparency should be a priority while I worked with the board to improve the organization’s financial position. It was ultimately a learning moment for myself as well, as I came to truly understand the importance of leading with clarity, honesty and direct communication— something I carry with me to this day.

Working through the Recession of 2008, I looked for ways to keep as many of our staff employed as possible while still reducing expenses in order to stay profitable. As lawyers who are women of color, our confidence is easily shaken when people doubt that women of color are smart enough to succeed in law school or talented enough to make it in the legal profession. The good thing is, we’ve learned to thrive on this doubt and use it to drive us as we change the paradigm for women of color lawyers and law students. Our work is not in vain because there are a number of legal firms and departments that know and appreciate the value women of color bring to the profession.

LEADERSHIP CAREER

As it happens I am a person with deteriorating vision loss. As such, I have had to learn a lot about accommodation and compromise in the various arenas where I lead. This has afforded me one great attribute of leadership: HUMILITY..

Getting comfortable with my style of leadership has taken a while. I’m a connector and listener and enjoy teamwork and doing things together. I like to process, reflect and then speak or act. My way of leading is not typically an aggressive, in-your-face style. I influence through persuasion, not intimation. It has taken awhile for me to know, and accept, that my leadership style is different, yet effective at getting work done.

JULIE STARK, M. ED.

MICHELLE BROWN

EXPERT IN TALENT DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY AND CORPORATE TRAINING DESIGN

MANAGING DIRECTOR, AIRPORT OPERATIONS, UNITED AIRLINES

As a new mom of twins, I questioned whether to still pursue the partner track (and even full time work) until a [woman] sponsor of mine sat me down, worked with me, counseled me, and instilled a level of confidence in me that I didn’t quite have for myself at that moment. Sponsorship is a crucial element of career development because it’s about having a colleague willing to put his or her political capital at risk to help you personally.

JANET FOUTTY CHAIRMAN AND CEO, DELOITTE CONSULTING, LLP

WHAT WAS THAT MOMENT WHEN YOUR CONFIDENCE IN YOUR LEADERSHIP WAS SHAKEN?

“Do I belong here?” Leadership requires confidence, but I am sure I am not the only woman whose confidence has been shaken from time to time by the “imposter” syndrome. Just one example—in the Situation Room in the White House, I needed to speak with authority as a group of us were called upon to brief President Clinton after the horrific Oklahoma City bombing. What confidence would anyone have in my words, if I was afraid they would notice that I was not even supposed to be there? I am over that now, but the lesson from experience is that confidence counts. For me, it is based on being super prepared at all times. However, a healthy dose of humility helps make that confidence palatable to others and keeps me grounded in the reality that, no matter how smart I think I am about something, I have much to learn from every situation and every person I meet.

In my years of experience in corporate America, I rarely saw other Black women represented in positions of leadership. I knew that because of where I came from, some people—maybe even subconsciously—doubt my capacity for leadership. I worry that after years of facing discriminatory attitudes, young women may begin to believe that their detractors are right. But over the years, I’ve learned to find an internal source of confidence that doesn’t depend on anyone else’s validation. Ultimately, I had to fight to win my position, but I did it, and under my leadership New Schools for Chicago opened more than 80 new schools across the city. I came to know and respect even those who initially doubted my capacity for the job. I’m now proud to be paving the road for our next generation of female leaders. CAREER LEADERSHIP My daughter’s bookshelves are filled with books on successful women. It paints the picture of possibility for them. We need to do more to eradicate the unconscious bias that prevents girls and women from standing up and being leaders.

KIM SVOBODA CEO & EXECUTIVE COACH

Building confidence and teaching relationship skills through consistent mentoring is invaluable to both young girls and boys. We also need more early childhood literacy programs that will help ensure that young children are fluent readers and can comprehend what they read.

CHERYL SKENDER VICE PRESIDENT OF STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIPS, SKENDER CONSTRUCTION AND BOARD PRESIDENT, FRIENDS OF PRENTICE

I have a 10 year-old daughter and if there is anything aside from teaching her to be a kind and responsible person, my number one goal is to ensure she knows she has the power to be a strong leader. There are, of course, positive lessons I hope my daughter picks up directly from me by leading by example and exposing her to the work I do. That being said I also truly believe programs such as Girl Scouts of America, Girls on the Run, student council and youth leadership groups through her faith are beneficial in developing leadership in our young girls today. JENNIFER NICKERSON, VICE PRESIDENT OF RESTAURANT OPERATIONS, LEVY RESTAURANTS

WHAT MORE CAN BE DONE TO CULTIVATE LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN YOUNG GIRLS?

As I meet young female students in our schools, I see enormous leadership potential. They are ambitious and bold. If those traits wane among older girls and young women, we PHYLLIS LOCKETT know that this is not CEO, LEAP INNOVATIONS a problem inherent to females—rather, we are failing to foster girls’ ambition in the early years. Starting at the earliest ages, we need to create learning environments that promote student agency, empower student choice, and provide rigorous learning opportunities for all students that meet their individual needs, strengths and interests.

Unless we raise this generation to love themselves, they will never be capable of leading, following or collaborating with others. So before we talk about leadership skills, we need to help our young girls get grounded and rooted in a foundation of self-awareness, self-confidence and moral authority. JACQUI ROBERTSON, HEAD OF TALENT AND D&I, WILLIAM BLAIR

RAHEELA GILL ANWAR CHIEF SALES, CLIENT SERVICE, MARKET STRATEGY LEADER BPI GROUP

As female leaders we need to talk about leadership and mentor young girls so that they will model leadership behaviors. We should teach girls that they are resourceful and if or when you fail, you should learn from it as most mistakes are recoverable. We don’t have to be perfect. MICHELLE BROWN, MANAGING DIRECTOR, AIRPORT OPERATIONS, UNITED AIRLINES

Often, girls are given tactical opportunities that don’t require them to be creative or lead. That doesn’t help them learn. They are missing the chance to be a part of the decision on how to do something. Girls need to be given these opportunities from their earliest interactions.

LEADERSHIP CAREER Brand yourself for the career you want not the job you have. It is important to believe in yourself and what you are capable of first before others see you in that same vein.

1. Find mentors and advocates. People are very willing to help when they see that you are earnest and are willing to work. You need men and women to help you. Look for the people that are successful and have influence and seek them out. 2. Focus on your executive presence—start dressing and acting as if you are in the role that you seek. 3. Strive to be a leader among your peers. Be invested in the success of others. The more you give, the more you get. KIM SVOBODA

JESSICA YAVITZ, VICE PRESIDENT, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, CHICAGO FIRE

CEO & EXECUTIVE COACH

When it comes to career advancement, the barriers are much higher for women. From the onset, you need to be able to clearly state what you do and what you want to achieve. You also need the willingness to fearlessly defend your abilities and ideas. True leaders should also be able to demonstrate a knowledge outside of their area of expertise.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN WHO ARE INTERESTED IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS?

CHERILYN MURER PRESIDENT AND CEO, CGM ADVISORY GROUP LLC

Cultivate networks inside and outside your organization to stay connected, and ensure you are aligned to both a mentor and sponsor throughout the course of your career who can both coach you and also stand up and fight for you. JANET FOUTTY, CHAIRMAN AND CEO, DELOITTE CONSULTING, LLP

CAREER LEADERSHIP If you want a seat on a corporate board, begin by making a concerted effort to identify opportunities. Also, seek support and support other women in identifying companies where your skills, expertise and perspective will be welcomed and recognized.

JACQUI ROBERTSON HEAD OF TALENT AND DIVERSITY & INCLUSION, WILLIAM BLAIR

CHERILYN MURER, CGM ADVISORY GROUP LLC

Look to non-traditional pools of talent. Embrace candidates with nontraditional profiles. Invest in programs that support the advancement of women from senior management roles to executive leadership positions, which DANIELLA T. LEVITT in turn become EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, LEADING WOMEN EXECUTIVES; AUTHOR, ENTREPRENEUR the pipeline AND MEMBER BOARD OF DIRECTORS, to boards. CHICAGO SINFONIETTA

Those currently serving on these boards must make it a priority. Start with nonprofits. What’s your passion? Find a nonprofit that’s aligned with that passion. They need people desperately. But more important, people who are willing to work hard to move the nonprofit forward in funding and building revenue. It’s hard work but begins to build your network. Make impact by serving in different capacities on these boards. “Bloom where you’re planted” in other words and then let your success on non-profit speak for itself as you network to get on corporate boards. Women account for just 18 percent of C-level employees— women of color account for 3 percent. Women can beat these odds. To start, we can gain an edge by identifying niches in the corporate world and becoming experts in high-demand areas. For example, boards are often looking for candidates with finance and risk management skills.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO BRING MORE WOMEN ONTO CORPORATE AND NONPROFIT BOARDS?

In order to position yourself for governing roles, you have to first be prepared. Organizations, like the Chicago Foundation for Women and Chicago United, help prepare business leaders for corporate and non-profit board involvement. NICOLE JOHNSON-SCALES, FIFTH THIRD BANK

Often through the selection process the challenge is that a company is looking for prior board experience and many women don’t have that yet. Non-profit boards are a great way to start to learn about the governance process and how to participate on a board with other board members. Gaining access to your own company’s corporate board meetings provides additional insight and exposure to those eventually interested in for-profit boards.

SUZANNE M. BURNS GLOBAL INDUSTRIAL, DIGITAL, PRIVATE EQUITY AND BOARD PRACTICES, SPENCER STUART-CHICAGO

After building your experiences in these areas you will be more marketable for board roles, especially if you have expertise in governance, strategy and digital technology. Also seek out programs such as Northwestern University’s Women’s Director Development program as a way of learning about required board skills and networking with other women with the same aspiration.

Marley Kayden, WHO IS MAKING HER MARK WITH “BACK 2 SCHOOL ILLINOIS.” Interview by Whitney Reynolds

WHY IS BACK 2 SCHOOL ILLINOIS IMPORTANT TO YOU? Back 2 School Illinois is important to me because it makes such a huge difference in the lives of children who desperately need help. In Illinois, 1.2 million children live in low-income households and nearly 50 percent of those kids live below the poverty line. Imagine trying to do your homework but not having a pencil to do it with because your parents cannot afford to buy one for you. While this may sound outrageous, it happens far more than you realize and B2SI wants to ensure no child ever finds themself in this position. In doing so, B2SI has donated nearly 5 million school supplies to children throughout the state. In addition, the organization’s college scholarship program has sent more than 25 students to four-year universities.

60

MAY/ J UNE 2 0 1 8

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED? I originally connected with the charity through my job. As soon as I met Matthew Kurtzman (B2SI CEO) and a few of the students B2SI has helped, I knew this group would be a part of my life forever. I have proudly been supporting the organization for three years now. The good that they do is beyond words. Once you spend time with this wonderful organization and see the immense difference it makes in the lives of our state’s children, you’re a volunteer for life. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GIVE BACK? I give back because it makes me feel whole. Because everyone should. Because I am fortunate enough to be in a position to have a platform that can help make a difference. To not use that platform would be wasteful and selfish. If you have the power to make a difference or have a positive impact on the life of even just one person, you should do everything you can to help. Whether it’s money, time, or even just a smile and a conversation, you can truly have an impact on our world. If we don’t make it better, who will? Plus, research

I have always been a champion of charities that aimed to better the lives of children and animals, but since Grace’s birth, I find myself being more profoundly impacted by their missions and the stories of those they help. I am not sure if it is hormones or my newfound perspective, but I feel even more compelled to contribute since Grace has been in my world. As a parent, it is my responsibility to raise a child who knows and understands the importance of making a difference in her community. Raising a daughter in the current social and political climate is both terrifying and exciting. My husband and I intend to teach Grace that even if you just change one life, you’ve changed the world forever. cw
