Elections - The Candidates '14/15

Page 1

* VOTING STARTS MIDDAY 17TH MARCH ‘14 *

STUDENTS’ UNION ELECTIONS 2014-2015 On 17th March voting will open for the Students’ Union Annual elections. This is your chance to pick the team of students that will run your Union next year; every student can vote so it’s really important you have your say. Voting can seem confusing so here are some common questions and answers about UCSU elections. How do I vote? Unlike voting in general elections you won’t see ballot boxes and voting papers around, that’s because voting is entirely online. Simply log in to Portia and you will see a banner at the top of the page saying ‘SU Elections’ click on that banner and you will be taken to the online voting system - log in with your normal University username and password. When do I vote? Voting is open from midday 17th March to 5pm 20th March. How do I find out more about the candidates? The candidates will be out campaigning for your vote from Mon 10th March, so if you see them make sure you say hello and ask what they will be doing for you next year. They will also be putting up posters and distributing other publicity so keep an eye out. Every candidate has also produced a statement of who they are and why you should vote for them and there’s a link to this on the voting page, so you can make sure your fully informed before you vote. I want to ask the candidates questions in person, how can I do that? The SU will be holding ‘Election Question Time’ events on both campuses which the candidates have been invited too. Come along listen to the candidates speeches and ask them questions about their plans for your SU times and locations below: Mon 17th March - 5.30pm at The HUB

1

Tues 18th March - 3.30pm at Zee Bar I’ve heard UCSU uses an unusual voting system, how does it work? If you’ve ever voted in a general or local election you will find the UCSU’s voting system is a little different. For each position rather than just voting for one candidate you rank the candidates in order of preference (number 1 for your favourite number 2 for your second favourite number 3 for your third favourite and so on) if one candidate receives more than half the 1st choice votes they are elected but if no candidate does (say there are four candidates and they each get roughly 25% of the vote) then whoever comes last will be removed and their votes reassigned to their number 2 choice, this continues until one candidate has more than 50% of the votes. This is much fairer than the other system and means that nobody can be elected without the support of half the voters. Will giving somebody a second preference harm my first choice in the election? No, the only way your vote will be transferred away from your first choice is if they could not possibly win, so you can’t harm your first choice by picking a second. It’s a very good idea to put second and third choices as they can often be the deciding factor in an election and even if your favorite doesn’t win it might mean a candidate who shares many of their views will. When will the results be announced? The results will initially be announced at the Elections Party in The HUB, then posted on the SU website and on Portia. The first results will be announced at 9pm and the final results should be out by 11pm. Come along and support the candidates by celebrating with the winners or commiserating the unsuccessful candidates.

VOTE SCARLETT - We Can do it!!! I am in my third year studying Theatre Performance and Dance. I am running for the position of President. I have been an active member within the Students Union throughout my time at University being involved as a Course Representative, Welcome Representative for on campus students as well being elected as Faculty Representative for Businesses, Arts and Humanities in my second year. This is where I was able to build the course representative system that was recognised by NUS. I also sat on academic board meetings with the University to help aid students with issues that arose within the courses. This year I have had the opportunity to work within the Union as the Admin Assistant for finance. Therefore widening my knowledge on the Students Union and how I can use this to help benefit you the students. I am running for President as I believe I can be the best voice for you. My involvement within the Union and the rapport I have with the University will help to assist your student experience. To do this I would like to make the students aware that UCSU is a registered charity therefore I’d like put forward UCSU as Charity of the year so all money raised can go towards Academics, Welfare, Sports, Societies and Events to provide more for you from your Students Union. As a third year I recognise the need for more employment opportunities and would like to focus on supporting students further than just their time at University and so hold recruitment fairs on both campus’ including interview workshops, CV building, postgraduate advice and information for graduate schemes. “Haaaaaaaaaave you met Ted?” Hey there! I’m Ted, a third year Event Management student based on the Bognor Campus and I’m running to be your UCSU President 2014/15. A bit about me - I have been an active part of the SU for the last two years, being the Bognor Regis Campus Officer this year in what has been a huge year for the development of the campus. In this role I worked closely with the SU to improve the Bognor student experience as best I can. This means one thing – I already am part of the SU and know exactly how things tick!

Why vote for me? As President, every aspect of your Uni experience is my concern and priority! I want to ensure that whilst you’re at this Uni you enjoy it – whether you are on the Bognor or Chichester Campus. My main points of my campaign, plus reason for running, link back to two words – “experience” and “communication”. If elected I want to ensure that students on both campuses get the student experience they deserve, ensuring that all voices are heard with the Union being proactive in supporting and representing you!

So, what are my polices?  

     

Communication - I plan to put a huge focus on communication to ensure that events and opportunities to do with the Union are heard about, working with the Officers to make sure this happens! Students forums - I was nominated by the SU joined the Board of Governors at the University in September 2013, meaning that I can represent your voices to the biggest decision makers at this Uni. More forums = More feedback for the Union. I will make a point that they happen on both campuses. LRC times: Extended opening times until 1am in the LRCs on both campuses with the knowledge that the safety bus would be operating to ensure you’re getting home safe! Safety: I will work with the Union to ensure a Sexual Harassment/Assault policy document is created and made readily available, so people know where to turn and the consequences for inappropriate actions. UCSU book trades: I propose a partnership with your course department(s) to create a UCSU book trade system, where books are traded in to be reused, rather than you having to buy new. Mature and Part-Time Students: I will be working closely with their Officer to ensure they have the support required to balance their Uni/family lives but also achieve their very best at whilst at Chi. How?... One method is encouraging all lectures to be filmed before being posted online! Societies: I will work closely with the Societies Federation and its President to ensure that societies (as well as sports clubs) get the support they deserve; making sure the two groups get enough coverage on both campuses. Alumni Matters: I want to establish a relationship with the alumni, ensuring that regular contact is kept with former students to ensure they are aware of Union developments and/or activities; as well as providing an opportunity to share their stories with current students; whilst (if possible) using the link to provide you potential job opportunities through the Alumini.

It is important for everyone to know that the manifesto above will be constantly built upon. As your Union President, issues that your voices raise will go on my manifesto throughout the year, therefore I intend to work with the SU, its Officers and the University to ensure you are getting the experience you deserve!

Want results? Make sure you’ve voTED! 5

Hi, I’m Jodie, and I’m a third year Sports Therapy student here at Chichester. During my time at university I have been an active member within the students union having been Sports Therapy Co-ordinator and member of the Sports Federation Committee for the past year. I have also worked for the union at both Zee Bar and The Hub as a member of bar staff and represented the union in sport throughout my years here, including being president of the Women’s Rugby Club during this last year. What I want to achieve as your President... 1. Improve the university employability rates. According to the Complete University guide, graduate prospects at the University of Chichester are currently below national average and I want to make it my responsibility to put initiatives in place in order to improve these figures. University is not just about graduating with a degree it’s about setting yourself up for the future. 2. Maintain and improve links with the local community. Having strong links with businesses and organisations in the community can provide students with further work placement opportunities and even increase the possibility of future career and job prospects. 3. Increase the opportunities for students to get involved within the union. I want people to realise the importance of making the most of their time at university. There are already so many opportunities to get involved but I want to widen the activities available, particularly in recreational sport and media. I want to work to increase the number of recreational activities on offer within the university with programmes similar to that of No Strings Badminton, whilst I also want to introduce a new union magazine for students to write for and appear in to increase awareness of union activities. I also want to encourage participation in current union activities with initiatives such as the Keep Wednesday Free campaign which I hope to re-establish. 4. Establish an open door policy. I believe I have what it takes to represent you as a student body no matter who you are, what you study or what you believe. This is your union and I want you to have your voice heard.

Jodie

ABOUT ME: I’m Abi, currently studying History with English and I'm asking for your vote for Student Union President, alongside Roz for Vice President. This year I have been an Open Portfolio Officer, which has cemented my passion for working with and representing students from all backgrounds, and I wish to continue this, changing things that really matter to students. As a History Course Rep for three years, I have gained an understanding of what students want as well as the necessary knowhow in taking any issues to the appropriate level. This year I was the off-campus Welcome Rep for BOC helping freshers that may have felt isolated integrate into uni, as well as aiding first years find houses. This first-hand experience has highlighted what needs to be improved.

Communication:

We already have a great relationship with the University, who genuinely want to hear feedback from, and work with, the Students' Union to continually improve uni life for all students. However I feel that communication can always be improved, especially between campuses. One way this can be achieved is through the suggestion of an information app that can be downloaded onto smartphones/tablets.

Graduation Fair: The university massively supports its

students during their degrees, however I believe that more can be done to help students prepare for life after uni. A centralised Graduation Fair on both campuses, linking students and businesses would improve on existing services.

Support: Support is offered to all students by the union

however I believe more can be done to include mature students for example helping those with children balance uni life with childcare.

Bognor: Bognor has an amazing new venue that has been hugely successful, I will continue supporting bigger and better events at the Hub and lobby to improve the bus services for greater interaction between campuses.

You: You are reason the for the Students’ Union and this will be the focus of any campaign and

changes that the Union makes. I want to bring attention to issues that affect individuals, e.g. mental health issues. It is too easy for an individual to believe they are on their own; the diversity that each individual brings adds huge positives to the uni. However, without a strong support structure, what is and should be a positive for the uni, can be a negative for the individual. For this I would work closely with the Liberation Officers to make everyone feel safe, worthwhile and included. Your experience at uni should be positive, both work and leisure. As President of the SU I would have an open door policy to all students on both campuses so that any student can feel that they are able to come and have their issue represented. I promise to spend more time in Bognor so that there is a presence on both campuses.

Who am I? Hi, I'm Lizi Mutter and I am your current Vice President. I graduated in 2013 after studying Dance and English. I first took part in a Students’ Union election in 2011. The Students’ Union became a huge part of my time at University and so I wanted to ensure all students were aware of the opportunities on offer to them through the SU and also maximise all that UCSU is offering to its members, and so three years later I’m still running in the elections and still passionate about the work I’m doing. Why am I running for Vice President? During my year as Vice President I decided to put a big focus on the Welfare work the Students' Union does. This has included giving extra support to our liberations officers (Black & Ethnic Minorities, Women’s, Disabilities and LGBT officers). I have done this through supporting liberation events as well as providing more thorough training on welfare. However I feel I could build further on the welfare work I have started this year. My first year as Vice President has been a huge learning curve and I feel a second year would allow me to progress what has already been started. Last summer I spent a lot of my time getting used to my new role as Vice President so I would like to use this summer to start my manifesto points as early as possible. My main priority for the summer would be to plan out a welfare calendar for the year. A pre-planned calendar would ensure that the SU are promoting a variety of events throughout the year so that the wellbeing of our students is constantly a priority. I want to find fun ways to promote things such as sexual health, personal safety and stress relief as well as other events that could greatly help many of our students. I think a key way to help promote welfare work and to get more students engaged in liberations events would be to offer extra funding to sports teams and societies. This funding would be available to sports teams and societies who get involved in supporting events such as Black History Month, Disabilities History Month, LGBT History Month or National Women’s Day. This funding would help our sports teams and societies to grow whilst also promoting equality within all of our clubs. Everyone has a right to study at University and everyone has a right to enjoy their time at University. I want to make sure I’m reflecting these principles in all the work I do. Vote Lizi Mutter No.1 for Vice President for an Utterly Mutterly good time at University.

VARIETY, ACTIVITIES AND MAKING THE MOST OF OUR UNI TIME: Most of us came to uni to grow, get better at what we love, have a memorable time and meet likeminded people who give good hugs! But instead we’re overwhelmed by lack of sleep, lack of variety and coursework stress. I will work with the Societies Federation, Sports Federation and Events Officer in creating a wide variety of relaxing or fulfilling events to enrich the more social side of university life. I will make these open to all groups, including offcampus, mature students, international students and those who commute. I will work towards creating the benefits, variety and downtime needed for all students to work effectively, immerse themselves in the social and recreational aspects and leave with the university experience they paid for.

11

ABOUT ME: My name is Roz and I’m running for SU Vice President alongside Abi for President, because if it wasn’t for their support and targeted influence across the uni I’d still be that student who’s too busy, stressed or tired to even read a manifesto! I’m an English and Creative Writing student who’s lived and worked as a Residential Advisor on both our campuses across all three years, working closely with the university to bring student concerns forward. I’ve seen the strengths, benefits and focus points of the student support system that need change and more importantly, how these concerns change for each year. People know me as trustworthy, good at giving advice and going beyond the conventional ways to get things done! Our uni has improved in many ways in the time I’ve been here - if something is working well I will keep the funding and attention in the right areas. If there’s areas you’re not happy with please don’t think twice about drawing my attention to them! We can hatch a cunning plan - I like a challenge, that’s how I ended up doing this 

STRENGHTENING STUDENT SUPPORT: None of the details matter when coursework, careers and social stresses overwhelm everything else. Most of us refer to the SU as the bar - I want to raise awareness of all the things the Union already does, working with the other officers to make sure students get maximum benefit from support they don’t even know is there! Financial, mental health, accommodation or coursework support from the SU made the difference between me being able to deal with pressures and singing offkey One Direction at a stranger in Zee.

BOGNOR STUDENTS: I lived on Bogbados camp for my first year and have heard all the constant promises to improve it. Enough of the divide! If elected I will focus on improving events and facilities at Bognor (using creativity and resources beyond the Hub), spending more time at Bognor Campus and giving Bognor students the choice and variety to enjoy their uni experience as much as they came to here to do. Also I will improve the bus service, which could benefit from better frequency, rates and a weekend service. To strengthen these improvements, I will focus on better communication between us and the university.

Roz and Abi ask for your vote! TEAM INSIGHT – BETTER TOGETHER @VoteTeamInsight

Don’t be Nuts, Vote for Boult! Hello, my name Rebecca Boult, a second year studying the BMus Music Performance Degree. I am currently the Music Society President, and also part of the Societies’ Federation Committee. Through these experiences I have gained knowledge and understanding of what it is to be part of a team and make decisions. I have been in charge of the organising and running of events and being in charge of my own committee. I have the drive to get things done and right attitude to get there. The University of Chichester’s Student Union is one of which I find is able to fully engage with students and I would like to become the Societies Federation President as I have the drive to work on behalf of the students as I have already been involved in running my own society and I feel that my experience would be useful and appreciated within the union. I have the right attitude and I am always up for trying something new. I work well individually and as a team which would be useful when working with the Exec team. I thrive off positive energy and I love to be busy. I love meeting new people and encouraging people to make a change and get involved with student led events. I am willing to try to make everyone’s university experience the best time of their lives! I aim to make a difference to the University, by making societies as big as they can be. And build upon the success of the last few years. I want there to be a loads of societies that want to start up and I want to see more events being run by societies every week. I want there to be a thriving community where societies are being spoken about and everyone wants to be involved with them. I want the societies to have our own day where we are celebrated, a day where we can show what we are made of and what we do. By doing this we can then make our societies bigger and better creating a bigger name for ourselves… Which then makes more people want to sign up and create a society that they can run and be a part of. There should be that many societies that you should have no excuse not to be part of one! This should then make us as big as the Sports Federation! We will make Mondays as big as they can be and everyone will want to come and join in! So that your experience is the best it can be, we could try to create a day for people who don’t play sport can be involved in something that your society runs and goes on throughout the day like a ‘game day’ for nonsport players. This way it is more inviting for everyone to be involved and targets everyone and not just a specific group of people. If you’ve ever looked at a society and thought ‘why isn’t there one that suits you’? Then you can create your own. And include you and your friends. Get involved!

Hello, I’m George, I’m 21 and I have been at the University now for 3 years. I will be going into my final year of Community Sports Coaching and I am running for the position of RAG Officer. Raising awareness for charities has always been a passion of mine. I think given the opportunity I would be able to help raise even more awareness and money for even more charities next year. Before I started university I used to volunteer at a local school helping disabled athletes in sport. This was my first experience in helping the less fortunate which then inspired me to do even more.

Since then, I have taken part in the Great South Run, raising money for a charity called Footprints

I also competed in a futsal tournament that was raising money for the Steve Bernard Foundation who was a former University of Chichester Student.

I would like to carry on the great work that has been done this year and try and raise as much money and awareness for as many various charities as possible.

One life, one love, one community!

Volunteering is my life! Since being in hospital at a young age for a brain tumour my life has been about helping others. Now I want to share this with you, by setting up fundraising events within the university and local community that get you the experience needed to get you the best career in life. Not just that fun and enjoyment out of it too! As I know when you think of volunteering you think of TV campaigns or children in need, and okay volunteering is that. But it is also you and us a COMMUNITY working together for the things we believe in regardless of the odds. So if elected I would use my position as volunteers officer to help those who have a passion to help a cause or selected charity to deliver workshops and pop up events or help in reaching the event you want. Also I would use the role to set up and work with other Student officers within the university to create and run fun days and weeks where through the week where we if volunteering is your dream or you have an idea for a campaign I will try my best to get quest speakers and those from leading charities to come an work with you to help you make your dreams reality.

In 2010 I felt that nothing else could go wrong and also took my life as I knew I wouldn’t be the same as anyone else and hated who I was. Chichester University has help me to see that in one life, one love and one community you can make a huge differencing being yourself! Regardless of ability or and being made to feel that you are wrong or useless is the worst thing in life and within the role if elected I would ensure that everyone is able to join and get accredited for their effort or contribution to the community and university as you are what matters!! Thank you for taking the time to read my manifesto!

Events Officer Manifesto:

Being in my second year studying a sports course, it is safe to say I have had a fair share of the good nights

out offered at Chichester, especially being a member of the women’s rugby team.

Working at the Students Union Zee bar, has allowed me get to know a lot of the students and meet people from a variety of courses, not just sport. I feel like I

have a very friendly personality which makes me very approachable.

As Chichester is a small university, I feel like it is the most important thing to expand on the events available and create a wide-ranging variety of events and activities that appeal to all of our interests, including non-alcohol events!

I am prepared to work with everyone in the upcoming year to expand on your ideas to make Chichester be known for their amazing events.

I want to increase the number of student led events within the union, it’s your union so tell me what you want and together we can make it happen!

I want to make sure everyone can experience the social aspect of university, whether you drink or not, taking into consideration both campus’s as well as mature students and alternative nights!

Most importantly, I want to make sure that students have the most amazing year

that they will never forget from first years enjoying fresher year to final year students ending their university life with a bang. I want to bring all the year groups together to make the most of events as possible.

Manifesto Hi, my name is Hannah-Marie Hill and I am an English and Creative Writing student running for the position of Media Officer. I am a very driven student who loves a challenge and has a passion for writing, editing and creating; all aspects that would be of great use in a Media role. I have recently founded the Film Society and recruited the members through Facebook, University website and by promoting the Society at Refreshers Fair and Societies Day. I have also advertised our events through posters and Social Media sites. I not only have an interest in Media, but can also use my skills – and role if elected – to help other causes to be seen. With newsletters being published, more people would become more aware of the Societies, events and activities going on around both campuses. With the support of Media more students can be heard, and it would be easier for people to communicate; through sites, blogs, email and so much more. I would then also be able to help give more people a voice throughout the university, such as our Liberation Officers. I also believe that everyone should be given opportunities to find help and get advice through the use of Media. I would be able to support students equally by providing mediums containing information which could help their welfare whilst studying at the University Of Chichester. I believe that I can bring new ideas to the University and Students’ Union, in order to help promote the campaigns, policies and events. Through Media communications everyone can have the chance to express their views, to promote their societies and to publicise their events. As Media Officer I could help make this become a reality. “Be Seen. Be Heard. Be Equal!”

Hi I’m Rosie Tugwell I’m a third year Physical Education (QTS) student with a love for photography and art. Having worked for the students union at Zee Bar as a photographer and social secretary of the Women’s Rugby team I have been an active member of the students union. As social secretary I have been responsible for heading up events for the rugby team and updating all social media networks including our twitter feed, instagram and facebook page. I am a confident and outgoing person and think I’d be great as your media officer for the coming year.

As the media officer for the students union I would like to… 

See the return of the students union magazine with student writers and editors giving the students the opportunity to promote their work

Continue to promote the work of the students union across social network to ensure students are kept up to date with activities within the union

Work closely with businesses and organisations in the local community to provide students the opportunity to gain work placements and experience in media centres and further promote the university in a positive light.

To gain the university further external publicity be it an article in Chichester Observer about our amazing volunteer work or in BUCS magazine for our high-flying sports teams. I want to get the University of Chichester the good publicity it deserves.

THE CANDIDATE SARAH MASTERSON P32

Ever since starting at the University Of Chichester I have always wanted to be involved in some way or another. Initially this was just at a departmental level – as a Course Representative – but by half way through my First Year I was feeling encouraged and inspired to get involved even more. This was because Chichester moulded a new me; someone who wanted new challenges, who was willing to try new things, and who wanted to be involved in a variety of events and activities across both campuses. – Even when unsuccessful (which, of course, there have been times) I have climbed back onto my horse, persevered, and tried again. Throughout the past two and a half years I have remained as a Course Representative, with the addition of having been a R.A.G. Volunteer and Low Alcohol Social Welcome Representative since Second Year. Second Year also saw me sit on the Societies Federation Committee; providing me an insight to the workings of the Students’ Union. By December 2012, the Society Of Alternative Socials (SAS) had been born; with its foundations lying within the Low Alcohol Group. It had also been proven to be a major hit from students of all year groups, and of all different sorts of backgrounds – as an ALTERNATIVE way of socialising. – The first University Society of its kind. This unique group has allowed for many students to appreciate that adapting into University life is probably the hardest component of University, especially if you are not one for the big crowds. Admittedly, this past year has been my most challenging yet, however through the adversity I have followed the light towards the end of the tunnel, and (as a result) have become a stronger person. I have always tried to find the positives in everything, and so these have helped to empower me to develop both as an individual, but also within the role. I therefore feel that this next year will help me to materialise the work that has only just begun in the broad – and somewhat challenging – nature of the role. Integration, Disability Awareness, and Accommodation are just some of the areas of interest – in relation to the Welfare And Equal Opportunities Officer position – which I hope to be able to build upon from the foundations I laid this year. I have a good listening ear, and so am always happy meet up for a chat over a cup of Coffee or Hot Chocolate; as well as willing to take forward any comments, complaints, or suggestions to the relevant meetings. I will strive to use all my experiences of university and the roles I have undertaken to ensure that all students, no matter what gender, sexuality, ethnicity, disability or who they are, can have an enjoyable experience of life at our university. And to continue to cut down the numbers of students dropping out/leaving the university before they can realise their potential, so that they can… “Be Seen. Be Heard. Be Equal!”

Manifesto, candidate: Shellie Green, position: Disabilities officerAs someone who copes with a learning disability, as well as living from a young age alongside a physically handy capable family member, disability, has always been a matter that has been of much importance to my life. It was apparent to me from a young age that those that suffer from disabilities, whether they are physical or otherwise, do not always have a say in the way they are treated, or a voice in choices that are made on their behalf. This is why I would like to be elected as disabilities officer for the student union. If elected I would offer myself as a voice to any individual who suffers from any disability, or an individual who feels they may have an un noticed disability, that may have issues that want to be addressed by the University of Chichester. Though personal experience I know that it can sometimes be difficult to express feelings that come with disabilities. But as someone who has grown up with Dyslexia, my confidence in expressing these issues has grown. And I now feel that I am an approachable and confident enough to help those who want to raise issues that they may not have the confidence to address alone. I would offer my assistance as either a figure of support or someone who addresses this issue on behalf of someone who does not want to address the issue at all, but wants a situation dealt with. Asides from this amongst other key issues that students may have, one of the aims I wish to address as disabilities officer would be to address the way in which ALL lectures deal with dyslexic students. Most lectures seem to have a good grasp on the challenges that face individuals that suffer with this condition, but some express somewhat an attitude of disregard to these challenges. I’m sure that this issue is also not exclusive to those who suffer from dyslexia, but also from any individual who suffers from any disabilities. Another of my aims would be to attempt to introduce a support network for those who are diagnosed with disabilities at university. Many people are unaware of learning disabilities such as dyslexia and dyspraxia until they get to university, the prospect of now living with these conditions can prove a daunting one. I would like to look into the possibility of offering these students the opportunity to talk to a fellow student with the same disability that can reassure them, and share their experience. I feel these students would aspirate this, as there are many students I know who have asked mutual friends for my help in claiming of DSA allowance. This highlights to me that not only do they find me approachable, but know that I am someone who is proud to raise awareness of not only the disability I suffer with, but who highlights the importance of using you disability as a positive factor- and using it to strive towards personal goals, no matter how big or small. I would be honoured and proud to become an officer for the UCSU, and if elected would be keen to be involved in any aspect of development I could assist in. I feel I would offer a voice, friend and any support needed, to everyone and anyone who may require it.

Manifesto Hello my name is Isaac Nerval, and I am a History student re-running for the position of Disabilities Officer and this is my manifesto on why you should elect me for the said position. I am a strong follower of the socialist ideology, and therefore a student very dedicated to making things equal for others, and especially to those in need. I am what you could call a leveller, holding the view of that everyone is equal and therefore should be provided with equal opportunities. I have always looked out for the minority, the underdog, and/or someone in need. I believe that anyone should be given the opportunity to do anything they wish, be it disabled or not. This is because I look at someone disabled and feel that they can and should be allowed to achieve their goals and to reach their full potential. As I believe that obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it, and this I feel is the case with anyone disabled or not, so long as they are given the support and encouragement that they need. The disability of a human should not prevent them from being able to do what they want. This is a university and union that can be proud of its achievements of listening and looking after those in need. I will strive to make more and more disabled people feel at home at Chichester, making it an experience they never forget. I want to get people to have the same feeling and experience I’ve had here and the help I have gained to help to succeed despite my autism and dyspraxia. In the past, I have been told that I wouldn’t do certain things due to my autism and dyspraxia. I have since proved people wrong thanks to the support that I have received to reflect my sheer determination to improve. I also have had the privilege of having friends who have had disabilities of different variety, but due to their determination and the support they have received they have led quite extraordinary lives and fulfilled their potential. This is how I know that with the right support, a disabled student can gain the experience and achievement they so choose to attempt. And this is why I am re-standing, because I believe that anyone should be allowed to do anything they desire, and I believe that they should gain that necessary support and I will always be available to all disabled student who are unable to find anyone in the disability offices. Via Facebook, or e-mail, I am humanitarian who always wants to help fellow students.

THE CANDIDATE NICOLE READ P38

37

Let me introduce myself... My name is Nicole Read, a first year Musical Theatre student based on the Bognor Regis Campus and I am running to be your next Bognor Regis Campus Officer for 2014/15! I am a hardworking, passionate student who aim's high in all that comes my way. Being part of a community is extremely important to me, as I've loved being a Bognor based student this past year, whilst thoroughly enjoying being a keen society member and attendee of the newly founded Hub! I'm so passionate about this wonderful, small community this campus holds that I want to work with the SU, it's societies and officers to ensure that YOU get the student experience you deserve, giving this campus a voice they can hear 4 miles up the road to Chichester! So if you like what you see, carry on reading to find out more! Why do I want to be your next Bognor Regis Campus Officer? Being a part of something special makes you special; a quote that I've always been inspired by. Being a first year student, so far I've had an incredible and memorable time, from the start of fresher's week with Hub events such as Track to The Future, to being half-way through my first year studies. I now want to give back that same student journey that I've had, by engaging with everybody to ensure they get the best out of their student experience. I want to maintain the fantastic work that the previous officer achieved to develop the campus in a huge way, whilst taking small steps towards even bigger developments. Therefore, being a strong voice for this campus will give me a sense of achievement to know that I'll be making YOUR time living on Bognor Campus: unique. What I want to achieve as Bognor Regis Campus Officer, if you vote for me! 

The extension, or change in dinner time hours on the Bognor campus by working closely with Elior. As a Musical Theatre student, I've unfortunately been forced to miss dinner times due to my timetable clashing, as the same goes for Music with Musical Theatre and Primary Education students' timetables. These students are paying £157 a week for catering which they are missing out on. Working with Refuel Student Union Shop on the Chichester Campus to bring a larger stock to The Hub to ensure to sell more stationary on campus, as students lack this service on the Bognor campus. This would also include notepads, pens, pencils, folders, sandwiches and more of a variety of cooking and homeware for students than the Hub already sells. The suggested creation of a new Bognor based officer for the UCSU known as "The Hub Officer" to ensure there is an official role who is responsible for engaging with students who know what events to put on. Therefore, we would both work very closely with The Hub and staff to improve on Bognor nightlife and events. Wham! evenings have been lacking with student popularity, meaning the Hub has been lacking on funds which could be used for more advertising and for these bigger events.

Be a part of something special, and vote for Nicole Read for Bognor Regis Campus Officer together, we can all have a special student experience.

THE CANDIDATE ROBBIE MCILWRICK P40

39

Hi there, my name is Robbie and I’m a Sports Coaching Science student and I am also the current Chichester Campus Officer. I wanted to become the Chichester Campus Officer for the Student Union because I wanted to be able to help others like myself. I am a nice, friendly guy who is easy to talk to, and I’ve taken a lot of student’s comments on board and tried to take them forward. As it stands, I’m trying to push forward a few things around the campus. A few of these things are increasing the car park size, getting more water fountains around the campus, getting the campus a nicer look to it as well as library related issues including the amount of computers. What am I going to do if I am re-elected? As I have had not too much time to push forward the things I would like, I would like another year to be able to really push these things that matter to you, the students. I’d like to be able to take more of your views forward and get you all the things that you want to see on campus. I would also like to be able to create more accessibility for the students to forward ideas, and I would also like to increase the links with the Bognor Regis campus. Why am I running for this role? I believe I have performed well over the course of the past few months in my current role, but I still feel like I can do a lot more for the campus and the students upon it. I’m very easy to talk to, and very down to earth and I believe these are good traits to have for this role. I also want to ensure that the students get what they want for the campus, as well as increasing the links with Bognor and creating a better campus for you, the students.

Manifesto Sarah-Louise Boulding Live For the Memories Hi there! Sarah here, I’m a 1st year Musical Theatre Student applying for First Year Open Portfolio Representative. Since joining the Student Union team in November as a ‘First Year Open Portfolio Officer’, as well as working behind the bar at Zee Bar, I have met so many people and I have found that there is so much more that we students can achieve by working as a team. As Open Portfolio Officer I would;  Be a helping hand with STUDENTS, helping forward them on to the appropriate people, helping them with any dilemmas/ problems that occur.  I will hold open forums to hear the students’ voices, making sure that YOU have the best university experience as possible.  Making sure that the new student intake for 2014 have a smooth start being available to make sure they feel welcome and happy. I feel that the connection between the students, the Students Union and the Staff at the University, as well as Chichester Council itself, is crucial. It would be a pleasure as well as an enjoyable challenge to uphold that connection with all of these bodies. Everyone has a voice, but most stand back, reluctant to be involved. I am very open and easy to talk to. I admit, sometimes, I can be very blonde in my approach, but all things considered when it comes down to it, I fight for what I believe in.

Thank You for taking time to read this. Happy Voting! Feel free to contact me on sbouldi1@stu.chi.ac.uk

Break the barrier between international students, EU students and home country students by encouraging and organising integrating activities, e.g. hosting an international week, organising sport and fun events for everybody to participate in throughout the year Review and compile the rights of international students across all different areas of student life Represent our international students and bring up those issues that are relevant to them and their particular circumstances, e.g. accommodation, banking, immigration Organize campaigns relevant to those issues Help international students to get involved at activities hosted by the Student Union Represent you all over the university and at both campuses Arrange regular meetings where international students will get the chance to express their university experience and if necessary, take appropriate steps for change

Vote for me, Simone Schmidt, to be your International Student Officer to represent the views and opinions of our international students, help you where needed and make your Chichester experience just as rewarding as it is for all of us. As your International Student Officer I want to make life in Chichester for all old and new international students a blast and help you and them to overcome any appearing problems, be it adjusting to the new culture, homesickness or academic or administrative issues. As an international student myself I understand the issues with all the difficulties one might face when they first come into the country, including housing, opening bank accounts, ridiculous fee charges, oral communication, discrimination among many others. Over my life I have been travelling and living in many different countries and meeting people from all over the world. These experiences have defined who I am, as well as strengthen my belief in multiculturalism and diversity. International students are an integral part of the University of Chichester and will continue to be long into our future. International students enrich the cultural fabric of the communities in which they live and study and provide diverse perspectives and contribute unique knowledge and experience, which benefits the whole community. Therefore I (respectfully) have to disagree with Mr Cameron: Multiculturalism and its merits are not dead! Vote for me, Simone Schmidt, as your International Student Officer to represent and feedback the views of you as international students here at Chichester University!

So don’t hesitate any longer! Vote Simone Schmidt, your number one choice for International Student Officer! Making the world better since 1988 – Simone Schmidt

It has been almost a year since I was elected to be women’s officer and so far these changes have been made at UCSU:  A union specific sexual harassment policy that is about to be implemented!  Union bar staff have now been trained in identifying sexual harassment  International Women’s Day is to be celebrated for the first time at our Union. What are the plans for next year?  Stamp the sexual harassment policy all over fresher’s week – make it a big point in induction talks to ensure our students have a safe, happy time at university!  Get some more speakers at our union to promote more of a buzz around gender equality!  Make Women’s Day 2015 even bigger! I’ve really loved working with UCSU and I’m pleased to say some changes have happened over the last year – please vote for me so I can continue my work!
