MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
Parade showcases ‘truly thankful’ By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff
Flag bearers stand at attention in front of the veterans memorial next to the Cheshire Town Hall during the town's Memorial Day Parade on Sunday. Organizers estimated around 4,000 people lined Route 10 for the procession, which went from Highland Elementary School to Cheshire High School. Stopping in front of the memorial to the hundreds of service members from Cheshire, two marching band buglers broke off from Sunday’s Memorial Day Parade to play taps in memory of those who didn’t return. Before the buglers were called forth, American Legion Chaplain Randy Tapp gave a benediction, calling for the thousands gathered to never forget the sacrifices that have been made for their freedom. “Grant us hearts and minds that are truly thankful. Help us to fully appreciate the price that they paid at places like Bunker Hill, the Battle of New Orleans, the Alamo, Gettysburg, San Juan Hill, the Ardennes, Omaha Beach, Iwo Jima, Pork Chop Hill, Khe Sanh and most recently, the Middle East,” he said. “Thank you for those who gave the last full measure of devotion and laid down their lives for this country.”

Route 10.
“It’s a great little town to have something like this,” he said. “I thought it was tremendous.”
Irvin Daubert, one of the two 98year-old World War Two veterans who were the parade marshals, said Led by the Police Department and it was the most people he’d seen at a followed by cars marked as carrying Memorial Day Parade.

After an extensive search and a close vote, the Board of Education has hired an assistant superintendent from within the district. Marlene Silano, a former Chapman School principal and the district’s K-8 curriculum coordinator, was chosen from among nearly 100 applicants.
“She has always just been incredibly impressive. Her breadth of knowledge is great, she’s very detailed Silano and considerate,” said board member Marlena Soble. “It’s always been a pleasure and I’m very pleased to support your appointment.”
She’s going to fill the position vacated by Shawn Parkhurst, former assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, who left last year to take a superintendent job in Windsor Locks.
Members in opposition to her appointment said they were looking for someone from outside the district who’d have a fresh perspective.
Silano received praise from all the board members. She was appointed in a 4-3 vote last week.
Neeta Vatti voted against Silano’s appointment, saying the district would have been best served by an external

candidate. “I believe it is beneficial and important for someone new to view a situation,” she said. Vatti, a Democrat, joined Republicans Tony Perugini and Adam Grippo in the vote. All said they were confident Silano would do a good job and had served the district well in her previous roles. “I find it hard to understand decisions to not vote for someone who is clearly the best candidate for the job, especially if those who are not voting are convinced that you’re going to do a great job, which I already know,” said board Chairwoman Kathryn Hallen. Pulisciano joined in 1985 as a freshman. He was the fifth head coach in program history behind Arlene Salvati, Jeff Gold, Paul Adams and Mark Ecke. Under Pulisciano’s watch, the Rams won six Southern Connecticut Conference regular-season titles and four SCC Tournament champi-
onships, along with the two state crowns. Cheshire finished 6-10 this spring. “Like I told the kids in the locker room, I’m not going anywhere,” Pulisciano said. “I’m still teaching another nine or 10 years. You will see me at almost every game, except when I’m watching my daughters. I’m still going to be in school and there. I’m still willing contact all of the college coaches I know for them. My wife and I went to our daughter Mia’s game with Endicott in the Division III playoffs and, once I got there, I knew I needed to spend more time with my family. Twenty six years is a long time to spend away from the family and I knew it was time to move on.”
“It’s tough to step away; we have put a lot of heart and Pulisciano and his wife soul in the program,” he added. “It’s going to be hard. Francis have a son, Ricky, and three daughters, Mia, It’s going to hit me a lot Ava and Giada.

Strawberry Festival and Craft Fair set for June 8 Cheshire’s Strawberry Festival and Craft Fair, now more than 80 years old, returns to town on Saturday, June 8. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Church Green in front of the First Congregational Church in the center of Cheshire. Admission is free, and free parking is available behind the church or behind Town Hall across the street. As always, the Festival will feature naturally sweet strawberry shortcake with Cheshire-grown strawberries. Also available will be hamburgers, hot dogs, snow cones, popcorn, chocolate covered strawberries, and more. For our guests’ conve-
nience, we will have an ATM on the church grounds and we will accept credit cards at the food and ticket tents. An integral part of the Festival is the annual Arts and Crafts Fair, featuring more than 35 juried artisans and handcrafters from four states. Jewelry, hand carvings, pottery, glassware, candles, paintings and much more will be on display and available for purchase. Businesses and organizations of all types will have displays at the Cheshire Community Expo. Festivalgoers can learn all about the for-profit and non-profit businesses involving health and fitness, remodeling,
martial arts, insurance, real estate and others. For the kids, there will be the ever-popular inflatables, including a 51-foot obstacle course. Toddlers will enjoy ring toss, pretend fishing, golf, and other games. Of course, there will be face painting, and for older children (and adults!), henna body art. Live music, provided by the Cheshire Community Band and the Irish-American folk group Band o’Brothers will keep things lively on the Green. For more information, visit www.CheshireStrawberryFestival.com.

RHEANNA HASTINGS
BRIAN CARABETTA
A veteran staple of the Platt girls tennis program, Rheanna Hastings returned to the No. 2 singles slot this spring for her final season and compiled a record of 10-7. The senior co-captain could claim some city bragging rights. She won both of her matches against Wilcox Tech and both of her matches against Maloney, including a 6-2, 6-4 straight-setter against the Spartans’s Alissa Hoffman in last Wednesday’s season finale.
The CTC Tournament did not end the way the Wilcox Tech baseball wanted. For a second straight year, the Indians were denied by Cheney Tech in the finals. But what a ride for the 16-7 Tribe, and Brian Carabetta was a big part of it. The senior threw a five-hitter in the 8-0 quarterfinal shutout of Norwich Tech. He tripled and scored and tagged a two-run double in the 5-4 semifinal win over Platt Tech, then tripled again in the 14-6 championship loss to Cheney.
MYCHAEL GALLAHER
BRETT HUNTER
Mychael Gallaher commanded the Athlete of the Week spotlight during the indoor track season when she set the Maloney girls record in the 55 meters at 7.79 seconds. The senior returns here in the outdoor season after winning the javelin at 98 feet at the CCC South championship meet. Gallaher threw for 111-5 earlier this year at the R-J Invitational, a season-best distance that gave her the No. 1 seed heading into Tuesday’s Class L state championship meet.
Senior Brett Hunter saved one of his biggest matches for Southington boys volleyball’s biggest opponents (so far) this season: reigning Class M champ Newington. The middle blocker drove home nine kills and piled up a remarkable seven blocks in Southington’s 3-2 win over the Indians that closed out the regular season. Hunter and the 22-0 Blue Knights later beat Newington in the CCC Tournament final and take the No. 1 seed into the Class L state tournament.
EMMA WATKINSON
ANTHONY LUPO
At the end of the year, the R-J likes to tip the Athlete of the Week cap to multi-sport athletes whose contributions span the seasons. Greetings, Emma Watkinson. The junior is a setter in volleyball, 5-foot-10 guard in basketball and first baseman in softball. Watkinson slugged four home runs this spring, including two in one game vs. Sheehan, and drove in the game-winning run in the SCC semifinals against Amity during Cheshire’s march to the crown.
Sheehan boys lacrosse heads into its Class S state tournament opener Wednesday against Waterford holding the No. 4 seed and a record of 12-4. That’s the best regular-season record the Titans have had in their six-year history and it has them making a third straight postseason appearance. One senior who been aboard for all those achievements is Anthony Lupo. He had a hat trick as the Titans reached the 10-win plateau and he’ll continue playing at St. Joseph.

5 tips to stay in shape at any age from 60-year-old bodybuilder By Kristen Dearborn Special to the Record-Journal
“Nothing motivates me. It’s a lifestyle,” she said.
right for your body, you have to experiment,” Schweers said.
She started competing in bodybuilding competitions 20 years ago in the Physique division of the National Physique Committee. The now 60-year-old recently came in second at the 2019 NPC Powerhouse Classic in East Haven in the Women’s Physique Masters Over-35 category and third overall.
2. It’s all about your mentality
The NPC is the largest amateur bodybuilding organization in the United States.
“Bottom line is, if you want to change your body you have got to change your mind,” she said.
Schweers also is a personal trainer at Montanari Brothers Powerhouse Gym in New Haven.
3. Train smarter not harder
She encourages her clients to stay healthy and reminds them that age is just a number.
Schweers said in order to make noticeable changes in the way that you look or physically feel you have to examine your attitude and find out what is holding you back from achieving your goals.
Schweers is grateful that she didn’t overdo it early in her bodybuilding career. She avoided common injuries that weightlifters suffer due to lifting heavily while neglecting proper form.
Her own fitness routine consists of three-hour workouts daily. Here are five tips from Schweers for staying fit: “I train very hard, but I train very smart” Schweers said of 1. No one can tell you her weight-lifting regime.
how to eat An essential tip Schweers teaches her clients is to understand macronutrients. “Fat, carbs and protein with every meal,” she said. Schweers recommends steering clear of fad diets and focusing on balanced nutrition. She added that she eats five times daily, but doesn’t necessarily encourage others to do the same. “No one can tell you what is
She recommends beginners and older people, especially, always warm up before beginning a workout program.
4. Don’t expect to see changes right away Schweers said she didn’t see significant changes in her body until about two years after she started strength training. No amount of cardio or aerobic exercise in her 20s to 40s, changed her body like weight lifting.
“If you want to change your body you need to weight train” said Schweers. Resistance training can be touted as one of the most effective ways to burn fat and build muscle. A person’s body composition can change over time as new muscle forms.
5. Compete with yourself Although Schweers gets up on stage with dozens of competitors from all over the the country in physique competitions, she said, “I’m not really competitive.” Schweers was drawn to competing because she fell in love with bodybuilding-style training after meeting her mentor, Mike Katz, a former American International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness professional bodybuilder. She said training is about being stronger and better than she was the day before. If you’re interested in Theresa Schweer’s expertise you can email her at trainwiththeresa@gmail.com Kristen Dearborn is a Wallingford native, NASM certified personal trainer and author of the blog dearfitkris – https ://dearfitkris.com/

Cheshire emotions run to the extremes in SCC finals OT loss in lacrosse followed by walk-off victory on diamond Record-Journal staff
WEST HAVEN — Cheshire knew both heartbreak and exhilaration in Saturday’s SCC Tournament championship games.

They had three athletes named Most Outstading Player of their respective tournaments —relief pitcher Ian Battipaglia in baseball, catcher Jade Barnes in softball and hitter Colby Hayes in volleyball. There was an additional hero in Cheshire’s baseball victory over Amity. It was Battipaglia’s battery mate, Matt Costello. The senior catcher connected for a tworun double that tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. It was Costello’s second-run producing double of the game. In the first inning, Costello had followed up a leadoff double by Paul Villecco to stake Cheshire to a 1-0 lead. Villecco got the winning rally going in the seventh by drawing a walk. Ryan Cyr followed with a single.
Matt Costello waited for his pitch Saturday during the SCC Tournament championship game against Amity in West Haven and he got it — not once, but twice. Costello put Cheshire on the board with a RBI double in the first inning, then doubled home two more runs in Cheshire’s seventhinning rally that defeated the Spartans 4-3. scored two runs in the top of the sixth against starter Rob Roles and initial reliever Joe Sabo to take a 3-1 lead. Battipaglia doused the flames with two strikeouts. The victory was the 22nd in a row for Cheshire, which takes a record of 22-1 into its Class LL state championship defense. The Rams are seeded No. 1.
Costello ultimately scored the winning run when Matt Downing singled and Amity committed an error on the play.
So, too, are the Lady Rams in lacrosse. After Saturday’s 1110 OT heartbreaker against Guilford, they’ll be even more fired up to take out nemesis Greenwich in Tuesday’s opening round.

Kurtz had a great game with eight saves. Annie Eddy, the SCC Player of the Year, scored three goals and assisted on four to lead the offense. Raegan Bailey added a hat trick. Annie Acquavita scored two goals and set up a third. Mikayla Crowley and Taylor Warburton had single goals. Most of the scoring came in the first half, which ended with the Rams up 8-6. It was a half of streaks. Guilford bolted to a 5-2 lead. Cheshire answered with six straight goals.

DAR HONORS VETERANS
MORE PHOTOS FROM THE PARADE
For Memorial Day, members of the Lady Fenwick DAR Chapter rendered honors and placed flags on 94 graves of Revolutionary War veterans at the town cemeteries (Old Hillside, Cheshire Street Cemetery and St. Peter’s) and three plaques, including the one at Town Hall. These veterans are remembered every year by the DAR Chapter. Among the family names honored were Atwater, Brooks, Gaylord, Hall, Hitchcock, Humiston, Ives, Norton, Peck, Rice, Talmadge, as well as many others. Pictured is the plaque at Old Hillside Cemetery.
