Residents reminded about CodeRED system

Artists share their work at annual market By Steven Scarpa Special to the Record-Journal

Every piece of art has a story behind it, and local artists working in all genres had an opportunity to share their handiwork and those stories this past weekend at Artsplace’s annual market.

By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Town officials are reminding residents to register phone numbers for Cheshire’s emergency alert system following a prison escape.

Artsplace, located on Waterbury Road, held the second consecutive day of its annual market Sunday. Approximately 30 artists were on hand to sell a wide array of creations, from painting and crafts to jewelry and clothing. Artist Mally DeSomma, a Waterbury painter, was pleased with the amount of patronage the market received. “I am really impressed with how many people have come through. It’s a fun thing,” she said. One of 85-year-old Cheshire resident Nina White’s creations was a plein air – outdoor – painting of a picturesque farm house in Semonza, Italy. She lived near that house for a time and was drawn to committing it to canvas. “I’m just trying to capture something that creates a little excitement in me, like a scene, something I feel I want to document, something I see. I’ll want to remember that place,” White said.

Fire and police department officials can use CodeRED to send a message to thousands of phones and did so on Halloween when an inmate escaped from Cheshire Correctional Institution. But some residents said they didn’t get the call.

Fire Chief Jack Casner said the problem is more and more residents are dropping their land lines and haven’t yet registered their cell phones.

White has been painting for over 60 years, beginning with a more photographic style and evolving into more impressionistic work. “It was always just a passion for me, even when I was young,” White said.

Chambers gather for Casino Night at R-J By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — The stakes were high for members of four local chambers of commerce who vied for networking time and jackpot prizes Wednesday night, Nov. 14. About 250 people attended the four-chamber “Casino Night” So-

cial hosted by the Record-Journal in partnership with the Midstate, Southington, Quinnipiac and Cheshire chambers of commerce. ”Any time you can bring the business community in a region together, it’s great for all,” said Dee Prior-Nesti, executive director of See Casino Night, A3

ing what she wants. Clinton resident Keelin Brett, 33, designs jewelry inspired by what she sees in nature and near her home by the sea. She essentially hand sews tiny glass beads into tiny branches that resemble coral, creating elaborately detailed pieces. She came to art from a circuitous route: “I wanted to be a paleontologist,” said Brett, who double majored in art and political science in college.

“I thought, how does he do that? I was fascinated by it,” Brett said. “I am trying to

Of all of the vendors, Alex Whatton, a 33-year-old West Hartford resident, had the widest array of original creations, a mix of quilting, pottery, and painting. “I’m a dabbler,” she said. She grew up around Artsplace — her mother Joan Pilarczyk is director of the organization. She majored in animal behavior at the University of Connecticut, but three months working in a laboratory cured her of that interest. A move to a New York City suburb prompted her to rethink her career path and through a bit of good luck a temp job led to enrollment in the Parsons

School of Design. She created Dirt Studio, named for the amount of clutter and houseplants in her studio.

“I look at the colors of the fabric in my studio and I mix them together so that it looks less like fabric and more like a painting,” Whatton said. While all the work might be unique and the artists’ perspective and motivations different, there is one common element to everyone’s story: “There is so much beauty where I live,” said North Branford painter Patty Meglio.

Town Council Chairman Rob Oris said the system is a good way to get out emergency information quickly.

Severe weather and public safety issues, such as the prison escape, are examples of when it’s used.

Casner said other towns and cities use similar systems for things like fundraisers and community events, which he feels decreases its effectiveness.

“It’s a good system to have in place,” he said.

Divorce and Automatic Orders By Lisa J. Cappalli

Whether expected or a total surprise, getting served with divorce papers represents a reality that stimulates a range of emotions. A natural reaction to the resulting mixture of fear and anger, in different proportions for different people, is to take some action. The spouse may, for example, seek control over assets, like bank accounts, or hide them to protect them from the other spouse or to punish the other spouse by doing

The Automatic Orders don’t provide complete protection. The reality is that dishonest and frightened people violate court orders. Others take actions before the divorce case starts that would be prohibited by the Automatic Orders after it is started. The Automatic Orders apply only to the divorcing couple. They don’t require, prohibit or punish third parties like banks, credit card companies, insurance providers, family members or anyone else from doing anything. Considering divorce or already divorcing? It’s never too early to educate yourself about the Automatic Orders. You might consider a consultation with a lawyer about how the Automatic Orders impact your particular situation and perhaps to explore options to supplement them.

Forum tackles opioid scourge Legal and health professionals, community leaders, and others affected by the crisis attended the event, and summit participants will spend the next seven months researching topics and creating an action plan. Jennifer Gerarda Brown, dean of the QU law school, said: “The program’s primary objectives are to generate policy recommendations to tackle the opioid

crisis; identify programs to help and support those afflicted by opioid addiction, including their families, towns, schools, communities and treaters; to de-stigmatize the disease; and to offer hope to those who have been affected by opioid addiction.” The group’s findings will be presented on June 7, 2019. We hope some sound solutions will be unveiled. Too many lives have been ruined by opioids. 4 things to know about the Livestrong program By Ashley Kus Record-Journal staff

WALLINGFORD — For a decade, cancer survivors have returned to physical activity through the nationwide Livestrong fitness initiative offered at hundreds of YMCA branches across the country. Here are some things to know about the program from the team at the Wallingford YMCA.

Health Benefits According to the American Cancer Society, physical activity and a healthy diet is recommended for cancer survivors to help prevent reoccurring disease. “We have goals of improving the participants’ strength, endurance, flexibility and balance,” said Eileen Farmer, program coordinator at the Wallingford YMCA. The program teaches survivors things like cardiovascular and weight training. By staying fit, participants may be able to recover faster and even do physical activities they never tried before.

Instructor Sheryl Harle, of Kensington, encourages participants of the Livestrong program at the Wallingford YMCA, 81 South Elm St., Wallingford. Photos by Ashley Kus, Record-Journal

she said. After the program, Harle said she was able to do physical activities, including mowing the lawn, which she previously did not have the strength to do. As an instructor she has seen similar results.

“We introduce group fitness classes ... things that maybe intimidated them in the past or they were just curious about,” Farmer said. The 12-week program is results-based, with an assessment at the beginning and end.

“We’ve seen people come in with walkers or canes and leave without them,” she said.

“We’re seeing less reoccurence with our exercisers,” Farmer said. “They’re also realizing that they have overall better health from just being more active.”

The classes include 20 to 30 minutes of cardio followed by strength exercises and activities like Pilates or Zumba. A nutrition class is also part of the program.

Response

Participants work out in the 75 minute Livestrong classes twice a week. The co-ed classes are open to anyone who is over the age of 18 and has had any type of cancer.

Staples sends arrow through Cheshire’s plans Defending champs stymied only so long by the Rams’ defensive ploy By Ron Buck Special to the Record-Journal

WETHERSFIELD — Cheshire field hockey relied on its defense during a remarkable season. But it could only hold Staples in check for so long Sunday in the CIAC Class L championship. Second-seeded Staples broke a scoreless game just under 12 minutes into the second half, added an insurance goal about five minutes later and went on to defend its Class L championship with a 2-0 victory over the top-seeded Rams at Wethersfield High School. Cheshire (21-2), content to let Staples (22-1) maintain possession throughout the game’s first 40-plus minutes, didn’t pressure the Wreckers until Staples scored with 18:17 left in the game. Staples, frustrated through the first half by Cheshire’s defense, finally got a ball past Alexis Hemstock on its 12th penalty corner of the game. Kyle Kirby scored both of the Staples goals on set plays off penalty corners, adding her second goal with 12:55 to play Cheshire, forced to come out of its defensive mindset after conceding Kirby’s first goal, still didn’t manage a shot on goal during the game. The Rams wound up allowing 16 corners. Hemstock made 14 saves. But as soon as Krirby’s first goal got past her, it was only a matter of time before the Wreckers would be celebrating their second straight Class L title. Cheshire was seeking its first state championship in field hockey since 2011 and 10th in program history. Sunday marked the fourth time the Rams have lost in the state

out a shot on goal.

“I’m really proud of the way the girls played,” Cheshire coach Eileen Wildermann said. “We played a defensive game on purpose. We intentionally played a low press in the first half. And because it was working so well and keeping them frustrated, we continued to do it.”

“Our plan was to play a low press because they are very offensive and score a lot of goals,” said Eddy, one of Cheshire’s 17 seniors. “We didn’t want it to be a highscoring game. It was working.

Cheshire defended all nine of Staples’ corners in a scoreless first half. Coming into the game with a schoolrecord 19 shutouts, the defensive philosophy was working.

“After they scored that first goal, we put the pedal to the metal offensively. We got a couple of shots and corners. It didn’t go our way, obviously, but we gave it our all.”

Anchoring Cheshire defense was Eddy. She had plenty of help, as Olivia Salamone, But to win, the Rams would Jade Barnes, Brianna Floyd, need to find offensive some- Sophie Cremo and Taylor where. tinuously in the first half. Hannah Paprotna triggered each penalty chance, sending balls to Madelaine Ambrose and Kirby on set plays that didn’t seriously challenge Hemstock. “It was frustrating at first, getting corner after corner,” said Kirby, whose OT goal beat Darien in the state semifinals. “But we knew eventually we would get a goal as long as we kept pounding. “At halftime we talked about not holding onto the ball too long,” added Kirby. “Once you make a move, take the shot, because if you get the ball on goal, even if it hits the goalie’s pads, it’s another chance. The most important part was getting shots on goal.” “We adjusted (after the first half ) to get more time at the top of the circle,” Staples head coach Ian Tapsall said. “We got a little frustrated in the first half, but you are al-

ways going to get a lucky bounce if you keep putting the ball on goal. We told them to take a quick shot as soon as you can.” Kirby took her coach’s advice to heart, as she took shots off passes from Paprotna instead of making a second pass. Neither of Kirby’s shots hit Hemstock’s pads. Her first goal came after she dribbled around a Cheshire defender and beat Hemstock low and to the right. Her second goal came directly from Paprotna and beat Hemstock from the top of the circle. Up until Kirby’s first goal, Cheshire was content to form a defensive wall around Hemstock. Outside of the penalty chances, Kirby took the only other Staples’ shot in the first half. “We knew were up against a really skilled team,” Crowley said. “We wanted to keep thing defensive until at least halftime.”
