Tobacco use in town parks will be prohibited beginning later this month after a Town Council vote to implement the policy. Parks and Recreation Director Bob Ceccolini said the ban was “overwhelmingly approved” by the parks commission. “There are many reasons for it, health being a huge one,”

Cheshire judge tapped for appeals seat HARTFORD — Superior Court Judge Maria Araujo Kahn, a Cheshire resident, has been nominated to serve as a Connecticut Appellate Court judge. On May 2, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy also nominated Superior Court Judge Nina Elgo, of West Hartford, to serve on the Appellate Court. If both are confirmed by the state legislature, “this will become the first time in state history that the Appellate Court has been represented by a ma-
jority of female judges,” according to a statement from Malloy’s office.

Malloy said Kahn and Elgo “have proven themselves to be fair, reasoned jurists who have served with distinction.”
She received her bachelor’s degree from New York University and her law degree from Fordham University.
Kahn was first appointed to serve as a Superior Court judge in April 2006. She serves as co-chairwoman of the Access to Justice Commission and Limited English Proficiency Committee, and as a member of the Sentence Review Division of the Superior Court. In addition,
Elgo was first appointed to serve on the Superior Court in May 2004. Elgo and Kahn were nominated to fill vacancies created by the recent retirements of Herbert Gruendel and Robert Beach Jr., who took senior status.
