Building a replacement for the existing aging concession stand is a priority for town leaders. “It’s something we desperately need,” Town Council Chairman Rob Oris. “We need to show this community we can get things done on time and on budget. Councilors budgeted $650,000 for a new, expanded concession stand and bathrooms. Vincent Masciana, the school district’s chief operating officer, said $50,000 of that total is for new kitchen equipment and another $50,000 is contingency for the project, which hopefully won’t be spent.

Red apple sangria is good for company Since I have two part-time jobs at two local vineyards that keep me constantly around wine, I’m always looking at ideas of how to use it in drink recipes. I recently celebrated my birthday by having a bunch of my close friends over and wanted to make sure I had great appetizers and, of course, a signature drink. With fall being my favorite season, I made a red apple sangria, which I displayed in a large cauldron. The great thing about sangria is you can adjust the recipe and make it sweeter, drier, or fruitier depending on your taste. I love red wine, so I made it with a base of a hearty Cabernet Sauvignon. You could use a lighter red

wine or a white wine if you want. When making this recipe, make sure you have either a large bowl or a very large pitcher because there is a lot of liquid that goes into it. After using a bottle of red wine (you can use two to make it less sweet), I added brandy, apple vodka, club soda, orange juice, and apple cider and mixed it together. You don’t have to add the vodka or brandy, but I thought it gave it a nice flavor. To add some texture, I cut up three honey crisp apples (bite sized) and tossed them into the mixture. I also added three cinnamon sticks. Let the sangria and the ap-

ples in it soak for about 4 hours, if possible, before serving. All the flavors combine better after it’s had some time. If you want to get fancy with serving it, I added caramel around the rim of the wine glasses and then dipped it into a sugar and brown sugar mixture. Then you can garnish the glass with an apple slice. Everyone really enjoyed it and I already made it again this week for a second gathering. You might like it as a change of pace during the rest of the Thanksgiving weekend when company comes over. into the liquid. Let it sit in the refrigerator for about three to four hours before serving to let the flavors marinate. Put the liquid caramel into a small bowl. Dip the rim of the wine glass into the caramel. Mix some brown sugar and sugar together on a plate. Dip the wine glass rim into the brown sugar and sugar mixture. Garnish the glass with an apple. Recount affirms Linehan win By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Democrat Liz Linehan emerged the victor in a recount for the 103rd House District race, confirming the outcome of a narrow election night contest against Republican Andy Falvey. Linehan was ahead in the race by 54 votes at the end of election night, but the margin was close enough to trigger an automatic recount, according to state rules. The recount completed Nov. 14 finished with her ahead by 77 votes, she said. The district covers portions of Cheshire, Wallingford and Southington. Cheshire election workers spent most of Nov. 14 counting the ballots cast for Falvey and Linehan in town Nov. 8. Linehan said that, given her lead, she wasn’t concerned about losing the election at the recount.

a recount would change the vote enough to swing the election. Falvey said he was tired after a “long, long campaign.” While disappointed in the outcome, Falvey said he felt he’d done all he could. He also was pleased that the campaign was run cleanly.

Linehan was joined by friends as well as lawyers representing the Democratic Party. Falvey’s campaign manager and son, Joe Falvey, was at Town Hall for the recount. Falvey is a former councilor and Board of Education member in Cheshire.

Linehan said she’s glad the election is settled and is eager to get to work “It was a number that could be seen as insurmountable,” on state issues. The disturbing election reaction While it is questionable to ascribe the word “historic” to the 2016 election, that term can rightfully be applied to the nation’s reaction to the results. Forget the protests. Anyone who has read of the infantile behavior of so many college students requiring “safe spaces” and protection from “offensive words” could have predicted their need for “cry ins” and the offer of professional counseling from college administrators. What is historic and particularly disturbing is the reaction to the election results — on every level — by the media. Historically, the fourth estate puts away the poison pens, takes a deep breath, and silently cries in their beer if their candidates have lost. They then normally award the winners, if not grudging support, a honeymoon period of objectivity and neutrality so as to allow the voters an opportunity for optimism.

Well, not this year, and not at any level. OK, so the campaign of the bombastic, over-the-top bomb thrower Trump amped up the bitterness and divisions of the body politic, and it will take a week or so for the lava to cool. But can’t we do better on a local level? One column in last week’s Record-Journal graciously said this about Len Suzio: “Suzio’s ill-deserved win promises to bring more vitriol and rancor to the Senate.” Well, what a strange message to send to your state senate representative moments after 21,618 voters sent him to Hartford. I ask these questions: are these voters now considered Meriden’s “deplorables” by the opposition party? Has it come to the point when campaigns never end? Is it appropriate for post-election analysis to keep the voters seething with anger and revenge? What is the gain for

the community and for the state? Fortunately, here in Wallingford, the temperature seems near normal. Trump actually eked out a majority here, and I suspect that was due less to rabid support for him than it was rabid disdain for Ms. Clinton.

from the Democratic Town Committee. On the contrary, I suspect they are determining how best they can convince the freshman to perhaps back some of their positions.

Senator Len Fasano stands a chance to become the leader of the State Senate given the 18-18 tie. He ran unopposed Mary Mushinsky won her — again. There are reasons umpteenth term. Incumfor that, the most obvious bency is a powerful tool, and one is that he has built a Mary skillfully used hers by stellar reputation as an aprelying on her “bring home proachable, available reprethe bacon” message. Wallingford actually put Liz Linehan over the top in her very close race with Andy Falvey. This was another campaign completely devoid of vitriol, and we can expect all voters — and Andy Falvey especially — to wish her well. That’s just the, well, American thing to do. Running for office is a real grind, and in many ways a thankless one for the ones not chosen. We do an injustice to all the voters when we attempt to maintain the overhyped campaign rhetoric past the point that a winner is chosen. I never thought I could ever say this, but perhaps our journalists could follow Hillary Clinton’s example and put the country/state/ town ahead of their own disappointment. Stephen Knight is a former Wallingford town councilor.

IT’S ALL GOOD

Quality time with Oprah By Diana Carr Special to the Citizen

I love Sundays. For me, they’re pure magic. It’s the day of the week when the world stops just outside my door, and I am nestled in a cocoon of utter safety and bliss. For starters, I have five hours of SuperSoul Sunday on the Oprah Winfrey Network, wherein Oprah interviews spiritual teachers. Which means that by day’s end I am a different person, if only temporarily. I am of the opinion that there is Something that wants only the best for me, and is walking with me every step of the way. I am “the master of my fate, the captain of my soul.” (That phrase is from a book I read in high school. I

can’t remember which one, but it has stuck with me ever since.) The world is my oyster. Everything’s coming up roses. I’ve got this, whatever “this” is. I tell friends that it is always best to call me on a Sunday. That’s the day that all is right with my world, and I am spewing all kinds of wisdom. I’m really smart on Sundays, I tell them. By Saturday, not so much, as I am in dire need of my Oprah fix by then. It is a time of “no worries allowed.” There are no bills to think about, no kids to fret about, no “I should have done this” or “I shouldn’t have done that.” It’s like I’m on my own private little island, where the winds blow nothing but prosperity and excellent health and all good things. I always make sure I have special snacks

to eat, which bumps everything up a notch or two. In the summer, after my time with Oprah, I am in my pool. In the spring and fall, I am reading by my stream. In the winter I am curled up with a good book. Life is good. When I was growing up, Sundays were always set apart as something special. We had a big dinner at noon – usually corned beef and cabbage or a pot roast. After that it was customary for people to “go for a ride.” That was before we worried about gas prices and waste of our resources. We would sightsee, and check out people’s houses as we drove by, with my stepfather making comments all the while. “Oh, what a horrendous color.” “I like that landscaping.” “They need to trim those bushes.” You would have thought he was a

Realtor. In the summer we would go down to the Guilford docks and watch the boats, or the Griswold airport and watch the planes. Often ice cream was on the agenda. We would sometimes pop on over to a friend’s house. In those days it wasn’t considered rude to just drop in on someone. We all did it. And then, of course, I had my favorite show, “Lassie,” at 4. Life stood still on Sundays, and let us catch our breath. What was even better was when I was deemed old enough to stay home by myself, while the folks were out cruising around. The freedom was intoxicating! I would turn up the radio so loud that it shook the house, and dance all around the kitchen. I would call my

friends and talk as long as I wanted. I treasured those times. Sundays never have lost their charm for me, nor will they ever. I nurture my soul, I stretch my spirit, I take a little sabbatical from life, I recharge. And yes, come Monday morning I may have picked up my burdens again. But it’s nice to know that I will be putting them down again in a matter of days. I’m striving for a Sunday mentality for the rest of the week, too. This might take a while. Early voting needed The recent election was the first presidential contest in which eligible voters could take advantage of same-day registration. In Meriden, 325 people were able to register on Election Day and voted. That’s a good thing if you ask me and a credit to local election officials. But the problems that occurred, with dozens of people having to be turned away at the 8 p.m. deadline, further demonstrate the need for early voting, which 37 other states and the District of Columbia have in some form but Connecticut does not.

Many of the Facebook comments on the R-J’s coverage of same-day registration

That’s exactly what happened to me last year. After moving from one town to another I had mailed in a change of address card. But when I got to the polls on Election Day I still wasn’t on the list. My driver’s license listed my old address so I had to go home, find proof of residency, then go to Town Hall to register. An official there called my previous voting district and we waited for about 15 minutes for a call back before I could vote. The whole process, starting with my first attempt to vote, took well over an hour. Fortunately for me it was earlier in the day oth-

erwise I might have found myself standing in line and possibly out of luck. Early voting eliminates this pressure. In the states that have it, “the date on which early voting begins may be as early as 45 days before the election, or as late as the Friday before the election,” according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The average start time is 22 days before the election. Reach Eric Cotton at 203-317-

People were turned away because, while state law allows anyone who is registered and in line by 8 p.m. to vote, the process of sameday registration is more

Still, it’s extremely regrettable that any eligible voter who makes the effort should have to be turned away. The system should encourage participation, not make it more difficult. That was the idea behind same-day registration in the first place. The solution is rather simple – early voting.

criticized people for waiting until the last minute. But in many cases the would-be voters actually did make the effort to register beforehand as the coverage pointed out. But for some reason their names weren’t added to the voter rolls, which they did not discover until getting to the polls.

involved. If the person was registered in another town, for example, officials have to call the other town to make sure that person hasn’t already voted there. As they go through the process of registering voters, those same officials are fielding the same sorts of phone calls from other districts and checking the voter list. Without a firm 8 p.m. cutoff, the process would drag on, increasing the chance of errors and delaying the outcome of the election.

Tavern has become a music destination SOUTHINGTON — With bands seven nights a week and a bar layout designed by a former musician, Jeff Vitti’s Tipping Chair has established a reputation as a destination for quality music. Vitti played live music himself and ran an entertainment company for 20 years before opening Tipping Chair at 1783 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike in 2014. His idea was to run a bar with a live band seven days a week and thus far it’s worked.

Tipping Chair is also the only venue where Addison Station trusts the sound system. Vitti said his frustration with poor sound, inadequate lighting or a crowded stage led him to make sure those things would be right for bands coming to his bar. Bryan Kearney of The Berna-

dettes is scheduled to play Nov. 26. “We’ve been there once and we look forward to going back,” Kearney said. “It’s a nice place, nice vibe.” He’s particular about the types of places his band will play. Sometimes the chemistry isn’t right with the owner or patrons and The Bernadettes won’t come back. Consistently good bands are important in establishing a bar as a live music venue, Kearney said, and draws fans of

music in general rather than just followers of a particular band. Vitti compared band selection to consistently good food. “I’m very picky about who’s on stage,” he said. “If you go somewhere and have a great burger, you want it to be consistent (next time).” With patrons coming from throughout the state as well as New York and Massachusetts, Vitti said he’s hoping to expand to allow for more

dining. Vitti said he wants to be the best in all aspects of the business, although he was most familiar with the music scene when he first started. That’s unique among bar owners. “I’m working in reverse. I’m getting experience on the food end and the business end,” Vitti said. jbuchanan@recordjournal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

While the music can be an afterthought at other establishments, Roberts said patrons at Tipping Chair know they’re going to hear a good band even if they’ve never heard of the artist. It’s also rare to find a bar that’s having live music every night of the week.

Boyer, Guetens gather in the gold By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff

butterfly and left it with another gold medal. She swam away from the field with a winning time of 55.95.

NEW HAVEN — Cheshire had a pair of golden girls on Tuesday night in the CIAC Class L swimming championships.

“It was very exciting,” Boyer said. “We just wanted to do our best as a team. Getting those points was all that I wanted.”

Junior Liz Boyer was a double-winner in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle. Senior Cameryn Guetens was tops in the 500 free.

In the 500, Guetens led the entire race. Runner-up Abigail Francis of Wethersfield followed closely until the final few laps.

Both girls delivered on expectations at Hutchinson Natatorium on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University. They were the top seeds in the events they won.

“I wasn’t expecting it, but I really trained hard all season,” Guetens said. “Overall, I’m just so proud of the team. We wanted to win it all, but this was awesome. We all swam fantastic.”

Boyer set a new Class L state record and Cheshire school record in winning the 200 freestyle in 1:50.97. She took the butterfly in 55.95.

The four first-place victories did not, however, earn Cheshire the Class L team banner. That remained with Darien for a sixth straight year. The Blue Wave outpointed the runner-up Rams 729.5 to 666.5

Deubel (5th, 2:09.93) and Samantha Grenon (6th, 2:09.99) scored in the 200 IM. Shannon Lindsey was eighth (25.47) in the 50 free, where E.O. Smith’s McKenna Dale defender her championship

finish in 1:52.20. Loughlin, a freshman, added a seventh-place finish in the 200 IM (2:12.23).

Darien’s Kaki Christensen broke the state record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:01.93. Guetens also had plenty of friendly faces in the pool during the 500. Stevens was fourth (5:08.58) and Han was fifth (5:09.20).

The Rams were seeking their first state title since 2009. Cheshire’s hopes were hurt by a disqualification in the 200 medley relay to start the meet.

“I didn’t turn in the relay card in time,” Mascolo said. “Luckily, it wasn’t the determining factor. We still would have lost by nine points. I’m thankful it didn’t come down to that. It breaks my heart their race didn’t count because of an administrative error.”

In the breaststroke, Cheshire’s Lily Kurtz was fifth (1:04.08) and Deubel eighth (1:09.37). Lyman Hall’s night was highlighted by a school record in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Kristie Driscoll, Nicole Cislo, Casey Loughlin and Sarah Beverage swam the Trojans to a third-place GOT

Guetens won her race in 4:56.48 and later joined Boyer, Jordyn Deubel and Julia Stevens on the 400 freestyle relay, which closed the night with a victory in 3:31.51, another school record.

The Rams had plenty of points outside of their two champs. Joining Boyer in the championship heat of the 200 freestyle were Guetens (3rd, 1:52.82), Stevens (6th, 1:56.49) and Esther Han (7th, 1:56.56).

Boyer wasted no time making her mark. She won the first individual race of the night, the 200 free. Boyer pulled away from a tightly contest race in the final 50 yards. Her 1:50.97 swim shattered the previous Class L mark of 1:51.70 set in 2001 by Bristol Central’s Kelly Harrigan.

21st annual powderpuff game a hoot this year again, they all work hard,” Gilhuly said. “They’re becoming a family.”

By Bryan Lipiner Record-Journal staff

With the game days away, excitement is building.

The Cheshire and Southington powderpuff teams recently prepared for their 21st annual meeting.

“They’re getting psyched to play, they know Southington has a lot of girls,” Gilhuly said in an interview in advance of the event.

Kickoff between the Rams and Blue Knights was scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cheshire High School. Southington holds an 11-9 series lead over Cheshire and has won the last three meetings.

A powder puff practice at Cheshire High School in Cheshire on Nov. 6.

Last year, the Blue Knights shut out the Rams, 10-0. Late in the third quarter, Southington’s Kelsea Allen broke a scoreless tie when she ran 63 yards for a touchdown. Emily Maciejewski added a 27-yard field goal late in regulation. The game is the final for retiring Cheshire head coach George Gilhuly, who began working with the team as an assistant coach in 2000.

| Justin Weekes, For the Record-Journal

Before Cheshire, Gilhuly coached several sports at Sheehan and Lyman Hall high schools in Wallingford, and Platt High School in Meriden. Gilhuly said he is retiring due to other commitments. He said he will miss watching the team build a bond.

Almost 30 girls signed up for the Cheshire team this year. The group includes some juniors. “I got a bunch of great kids

has been anticipating the game for several years. “I’ve been wanting to play for a while,” she said. “My sister played in it in 2013 and she was captain too and four years ago I was waiting and it’s finally here.” Though Woodruff hopes to defeat New Britain, she said there is greater excitement for the Cheshire game. “We definitely want to win both obviously, it would be fun to do that,” she said. “But Cheshire since they are our rivals we are more pumped, because we are always trying to beat them in every sport.”

“They have a lot of enthusiasm and spirit,” Kemp said. “They know Cheshire is going to be good. The games always come down to the wire.” Kemp agreed. Southington running back Michelle Woodruff said she

“For this group, it’s the Cheshire game they want.”

“Like everything, you go on,” Gilhuly said. 1270581

The new stand will include six stalls in the men’s and women’s bathrooms. It’ll be located slightly closer to Cheshire High School and include more frontage for concession sales, Masciana said. The new building will also be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Cheshire schools experienced a raft of personnel changes following the departure of former School Superintendent Greg Florio. Following his appointment, Parkhurst said it would be difficult to replace Detrick. “I’m honored to take over that unique task,” he said. Parkhurst came out the favored candidate from about 30 applicants. Cathy Hellreich, board chairwoman, said it was a rigorous selection process.

Parkhurst will make $149,000 annually. He was making nearly $160,000 in a similar role in Wallingford.

Sandy Pavano, another board member, also praised Parkhurst.

“I’m very happy and pleased that Mr. Parkhurst will be joining us,” she said. “I think he’s going to be a terrific addition to our administrative staff.”

“I’m sure it’s going to be very difficult to replace Scott, but I believe Shawn will be a perfect addition to Cheshire,” she said.
