Fabiani elected to chair school board By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
Kathryn Fabiani is the new school board chairwoman following a recent vote. She replaces Cathy Hellreich who stepped down from the position but remains on the board. Fabiani, a Democrat who was vice chairwoman, is in the second year of a four-

year term. Four board members are up for election next year. Democrats hold a majority of the board.
Anne Harrigan, also a Democrat, replaces Fabiani
as vice chairwoman. Hellreich said she has family commitments that don’t allow her to devote enough time to a leadership position. She was pleased with Fabiani’s election. “I think Kathryn is going to do a great job,” Hellreich said. “She’s run meetings before and she’s got a great head on her shoulders.”
Fabiani, 64, said the school district has to address aging buildings and choose a personalized learning system. She hopes to improve communication between the board and the public on both issues.
She’s an attorney with Brenner, Saltzman & Wallman, a New Haven law firm.
Parents had strong opposition to the Summit online learning platform, which was withdrawn earlier this year. a domestic disturbance. Cameron Pernin, 29, barricaded himself inside his residence, and when police arrived, Pernin walked outside wearing a bullet-resistant vest and fired at officers.
“We did not necessarily communicate very well,” Fabiani said of the failed Summit effort. “That’s really going to be my focus.” A plan to replace Dodd Middle School with a new grade 6 to 8 building near Cheshire Park, the first step in a district-wide renovation plan, failed to pass the Town Council.
Aquilino, Nastri and Durkee returned fire, striking Pernin in the left hand. After being struck, Pernin barricaded himself inside again, surrendering minutes later. He was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
“I was tremendously proud of them and I am humbled to be the chief,” police Chief Neil Dryfe said. Cheshire police, like all officers around the state, receive training throughout the year that prepares them for lifeand-death situations, Dryfe said. Durkee, who was the onscene supervisor, credited the dispatchers for gathering information and relaying it to the officers.
Dispatcher Ron Henri works at his post at the Cheshire Police Department on Friday, Dec. 14. Five officers and two dispatchers, including Henri, were recognized for their actions during an officer-involved shooting earlier this year. Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

No officers were injured. A woman and an infant involved in the domestic incident safely escaped the home before shots were fired.

Esty’s 5th District legacy Voters in the 5th Congressional District sent Elizabeth Esty to Washington to work on their behalf, and she did not take that responsibility lightly. Even now, with her days in office numbered, the Cheshire Democrat continues to do the people’s business. The Connecticut Mirror reports that Esty still meets with constituents and is helping gun-control advocates draft a list of priorities for the next Congress. Also, Esty helped shepherd one last piece of legislation — the Women in Aerospace Education Act — into law. “I’m still getting things done,” the third-term congresswoman said. And mediation isn’t just for the “easy” cases. It can be especially effective for hard, complex situations, such as where the spouses are business partners. In one successful mediation, we were able to separate the different business interests so each spouse became an independent business owner. In another, the spouses achieved their goal of continuing as business partners even after the marriage ended.

The best way to find out if mediation is right for you is to consult with an experienced divorce attorney. He or she can help you figure out if mediation is the better and feasible alternative to traditional litigated divorce.

gun safety laws." With a solid record to run on, the expectation was that Esty would present a daunting, perhaps insurmountable, challenge to any Republican trying to unseat her in 2018. That was before it emerged that Esty’s chief of staff, Tony Baker, had sexually harassed a female employee, going so far as to make death threats and physically assault her. (Baker has denied the assault allegation.) And yet, Esty kept Baker on for three months, and had him accompany her to the Democratic National Convention. To make matters worse, she arranged $5,000 severance pay for him, signed a nondisclosure agreement, and even gave him a good recommendation while he looked for his next job. When this disturbing story came to light, Esty was contrite, admitted mistakes and wisely decided not to seek a fourth term. Beginning in January, Democrat Jahana Hayes will represent the 5th District, while Esty, 59, will begin the next phase of her life. “She’s going to be missed. Not only by her constituents but also by those fighting against gun violence,” said Rep. Mike Thompson, DCalif., who worked with Esty on the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. We wish Esty well. While she made mistakes in Washington, she also did some important work there.

Re-enactment highlights open house By Steven Scarpa Special to the Record-Journal
Hannah Curtis Lewis was annoyed at her new son-inlaw Rufus Hitchcock. It took her three hours via horse and carriage to get from her home on the other side of town to Hitchcock’s house for his holiday party, and she wouldn't have a chance to freshen up before guests arrived. “My son-in-law should’ve said just come over Saturday evening, but no invitation was extended,” she said. “But then I remembered my daughter is married to a very rich man so it is OK.” This little bit of fictional his-
torical family intrigue came from the historical re-enactors playing the roles of Lewis, Hitchcock, and his wife Hannah Lewis at the Cheshire Historical Society’s annual holiday open house held Sunday afternoon at the Hitchcock Phillips House located on Church Street. The party is a yearly tradition for the society going back to 1972. “Every year we try to do something special and different,” said Diane Calabro, president of the historical society, who also re-enacted the role of Hannah Curtis Lewis. Thomas Mulholland and Taylor Solomon, both 19-
year-old town residents, leaped into the roles of the newly married couple, who were wealthy and prominent members of Cheshire society. Mulholland, who has helped run the town’s graveyard storytelling tours, pulled Solomon in.
“She had a few miscarriages too,” said Solomon, who portrayed the new bride. “It’s interesting to see how they lived.”

Action on school plans needed, say education advocates By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
Following the collapse of a deal to buy the former Alexion Pharmaceuticals campus for a new school, education advocates hope the Town Council continues to consider how to modernize school buildings. split on the issue.
“That facilities master plan is sitting there aging along with two plans from each decade,” she said. “There needs to be a path forward.”
She said the education board and the council began shortly after that meeting on the upgrade plan and on the possibility of buying the empty Alexion building.
Last summer, the council voted against sending a $106.4 million plan for a new middle school to referendum. It was the first step in a $400 million plan to replace or renovate a host of town schools and included moving Dodd Middle School. Republicans were opposed sending the plan to referendum with Democrats you that it’s not.” The juvenile with the gun was released to the custody of parents. Dryfe said state law didn’t allow for locking up the juvenile in this case.
Dryfe said he had no evidence that the juveniles found in the car had committed the thefts in Cheshire since stolen cars are often passed between people.
Rob Oris, Town Council chairman, said he wants consideration of state law regarding juveniles on the town’s legislative agenda for its representatives in the General Assembly. Oris said car thefts are a statewide issue that should be addressed in Hartford.
But Dryfe added, “I can’t tell

It’s just a matter of time before someone gets hurt.” The pattern in Cheshire has been thieves checking for unlocked cars in driveways and sometimes stealing cars if the keys are in them. Patti Flynn-Harris, a Democratic councilor said she was willing to restart the conversation about building updates with education officials. “A lot of the conversation has to start with the BOE,” she said. “We’ve been waiting for them to come forward with some ideas.” Ferguson said she believed a lack of communication led to opposition from the council to the facilities master
plan developed by Board of Education consultants. Oris said it was in large part due to the cost of the project. “It was a $400 million project with phase one at $100 million,” he said. “That kind of project wasn’t sustainable on the backs of the taxpayers.” Oris said the council and education board tried hard to come up with a viable alternative that balanced school needs and the town’s finances. jbuchanan@record-journal.com
