Property eyed for more trail parking By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

A state grant could help the town buy a house and property off West Main Street in order to add parking for Farmington Canal Heritage Trail users. Town officials are working on a purchase agreement for the 19th century home at 55 Railroad Ave., according to Economic Development Coordinator Jerry Sitko. After demolishing the house, the quarter-acre lot would be used for an additional 15 parking spaces. Sitko said the trail is heavily used and that there are only 12 spaces designated for the trail in the West Main Street area. Drawing more people will likely provide a boost to area businesses.

International Food Festival is on a mission By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

Food is the universal language. No matter the country or culture, it brings us together. To quote James Beard, “Food is our common ground, a universal experience.” To that end, this Saturday’s 3rd Annual International Food Festival aims to bring out town residents

with an amazing array of mouthwatering international dishes representing countries from around the globe. The event is organized by students in Cheshire High School’s Distressed Children International group. Approximately 20 students are involved in DCI-Cheshire, a children’s humanitarian aid organization, founded in Cheshire in 2003 by

Dr. Ehsan Hoque and Dr. Brian DeBroff. “We have a very active DCI chapter at the high school,” said Ann Marie Fumo, DCICheshire office coordinator. The students in Cheshire High School’s DCI club range in age from freshmen to seniors, she said. Fumo said the students do all the work to organize the See Food, A12

The Town Council voted 8 to 1 earlier this month to apply for a state grant to cover the estimated $300,000 cost to buy the property and convert it into a` parking lot. If the town received a $240,000 grant, it would need to contribute $60,000. Town Councilor Tom Ruocco, a Republican, opposed applying for the grant, which he described as “one expense we can do without and one less grant we can ask from the state.” Additional parking could be the latest in a number

Meriden woman charged in kidnapping By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff

CHESHIRE — A second woman has been charged in an April kidnapping in which four people reportedly assaulted a man and held him captive before stealing almost $1,000 from his bank account. Allison McMahon, 20, of 2 Botsford St., Meriden, was charged last week with conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit thirddegree identity theft. On April 3, police were notified that a 19-year-old man was being treated at Hartford Hospital after a report-

ed kidnapping. The teen told police a teenager he met on social media, later identified as Audrey Bennett, 17, invited him to her home. When he arrived, two men, later identified as Ewart Haynes, 19, and Amari Fox, 19, assaulted him, according to an arrest warrant. Bennett also reportedly hit him in the head with a hammer, took the man’s wallet and demanded the PIN number for his bank card. One of the men also struck him with a baseball bat. The man said the trio then tied his hands, put him in his car and drove to his bank, where he was forced to withdraw $340. He also told police one of the two men punched McMahon in the face after an argument because she wanted to let

him go, the warrant said. Hayes and Fox drove to various gas stations to receive cash back during transactions with his bank card. The total amount taken from the man’s bank account was about $969.

Police went to Bennett’s home and found evidence of an assault, including blood in the kitchen sink and on the kitchen floor. Haynes was arrested on June 4 and charged with first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, first-degree robbery, fourth-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, third-degree forgery, payment card fraud and conspiracy to commit all of said charges. McMahon was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court Nov. 26. Attorney Charles Thompson said McMahon had minimal involvement in the incident and turned herself in once she learned about the warrant. Bond was set at $100,000.
