“You’ve effectively taken a group of individuals and frozen their pay,” Talbot said. “They look around and see everybody else who works for the town continuing to get pay increases. It’s a bad message to send to our non union, long-tenured employees.”

union positions are fixed. Once a non-union employee reaches maximum pay, any wage increases are calculated and given as a lump sum at the end of the year. Council Chairman Rob Oris, a Republican, opposed the plan and suggested a pay system that regularly compares wages to those earned in the private sector instead.

Town Manager Sean Kimball said his previous employer, the town of Simsbury, had a market-driven pay system. Tom Ruocco, a Republican councilor, also voted against the pay plan.

Under the two-year proposal, the largest increase for an employee was 7 percent.

“Had her plane landed 24 hours earlier, this would have passed last night,” Talbot said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

EDITORIAL

COMMENTARY

But will they vote?

Make state more affordable for seniors

“Dear young people, don’t vote! Everything’s fine just the way it is.” That’s the punchline of a series of spots that have been seen lately on TV and on social media, intended to encourage young people to register as Democrats. In these announcements, people who look to be in their 60s or 70s mock younger people for their traditionally lousy voter turnout. And it’s true: A national poll taken earlier this year showed that only 28 percent of people aged 18 to 29 said they are “absolutely certain” they’ll vote on Nov. 6, compared to 74 percent of seniors. But something else is happening, in this state and across the country: Voter registration is surging, especially among young people. According to data from the Connecticut Secretary of the State’s office, in the last midterm cycle, as of Oct. 10, 2014, only 7,960 Connecticut residents in the 18-25 age bracket had registered to vote. As of Oct.10 of this year, 51,659 young voters had registered — more than six times as many — whereas, in a midterm election such as this, the lack of a presidential contest usually depresses the number of new registrations. “It’s tremendous,” Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill told The Connecticut Mirror. “I feel like I’ve been waiting all my life for young people to turn out, and now they have. Just in September, we had more than 20,000 registrations.” And voter registration in Connecticut doesn’t end until Oct. 30. Those are big numbers for this small state. Although voter registration in Connecticut has surged for all age groups, the biggest increase is among young voters, aged 18 to 25. Among the new voters who registered here from the 2016 election through the end of September 2018, the unaffiliated outnumber the total number of Democrats and Republicans. One question that comes to mind is: Why? Merrill suggests that the 2016 election “seems to have galvanized voters.” Then there were the hearings over Judge Brett Kavanaugh, which dramatized a sharp political divide for a huge TV audience. There is also a celebrity factor: A surge of new registrations was reported by Vote.org, a national voter registration organization, after the singer Taylor Swift informed her 112 million Instagram followers that she was endorsing two Democrats in her home state of Tennessee. The big question, of course, is: Will the newly registered young people actually vote? We have no way of knowing, but such a dramatic surge in registrations will surely mean a substantial increase in turnout. And we hold to the belief that greater participation in the democratic process is a good thing. Previously published in the Record-Journal.

The Rams established a 1-0 lead in the first half, then pulled away in the second. “Lyman Hall is a very good team ; they’re very tough. They’re the kind of team where we have to stay on top of them because, if you don’t, they’ll get bigger and bigger,” said Cheshire coach Artur Branco. “We were up just 1-0 at halftime and we knew that we needed to put up one or two more to kind of kill the game because they are very resilient and they have players that can really hurt a team at any given time.” See Soccer, A18

Soccer From A17

“We’ve been this way all year long. We have trouble hanging with the better teams,” said Lyman Hall coach Arnie Jandreau. “We’ve been within one goal everytime except for this one and against West Haven. We’ve been in the games, but right now we’re just trying to make the tournament. If we make the tournament, I think we could surprise a lot of people.” Last Tuesday, the first half was close throughout. Both sides had opportunities to put the ball in the net. Cheshire connected 21 minutes into the half, with Mayano dishing to Fuentes. Going into the second half, Cheshire went on an immediate attack. Within two minutes, Fuentes connected on his second goal of the game.

About five minutes later, Fuentes picked up an assist after setting up Donahue for the third Cheshire goal. With a 3-0 lead, Cheshire didn’t relent on the attack. The Rams controlled the ball for the vast majority of the second half and Mayano scored twice to complete the 5-0 victory. Ranked and still undefeated, Cheshire is poised as one of the top teams in the state. “There’s a lot of facets of the game where we really need to get better if we want to compete with the next tier of teams,” Branco said. “We’re working towards that and, hopefully, when the time comes, if we’re lucky to be in a situation ... to compete with those teams, we’ll do well.” On the other hand, Lyman Hall had a very respectable first half. The Trojans hung in there for the first 40 minutes, but fell

apart in the second half. Lyman Hall has been plagued by injuries, having lost three of its starters. The Trojans have also been dealing with a bear of a schedule through the early parts of the season. “We have so many injuries right now; we’ve been hurt the past four games,” said Jandreau. “I just wanted nobody to get hurt today. “We hung in there for a while, but we just can’t play with a team like this right now. I think they started nine seniors and I’ve got four sophomores in there. You just can’t compare it. They’re a good team, I don’t want to take anything away from them. Jane Fisher, Wallingford Public Library executive director, is slated to receive the Community Impact award Oct.18 at an awards luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn in Wallingford. The regional awards honor women nominated by the Quinnipiac and Greater New Haven chambers’ membership. Fisher was nominated by co-workers and friends.

DOMINIC OLIVERI

JACKIE IZZO

For much of the season, Dominic Oliveri was not the leading runner for Maloney cross country. He was, however, the reigning Meriden boys champion. Last Tuesday, in the city meet with Platt and Wilcox Tech, Oliveri returned to the head of the pack to defend that title. The junior covered the 3.1-mile course at Hubbard Park in 18 minutes flat, persevering in a three-way battle with teammate Reynaldo Torres (18:12) and Wilcox’s Donny You (18:20).

Southington cross country coach Dan Dachelet spoke highly of Jackie Izzo as she came into her freshman year. Dachelet was onto something. Continuing a season that opened with a first place in a freshman race at an invitational in New York and an 11th-place finish at an invite in Philadelphia, Izzo set a new Southington girls 5K record with the 19:28 she ran last Tuesday at Northwest Catholic. She’s also run a 19:59 at West Hartford Reservoir.

ROBERTO SALAS

MORGAN KICKLIGHTER

Sophomore running back Roberto Salas continued to build upon his breakout season (and that of the Platt football team as a whole) in last Friday night’s 26-19 victory over Wethersfield at Falcon Field. Salas piled up 265 yards and one touchdown on 30 carries. That’s a career high — so far. For the year, Salas has 751 yards and 5 TDs on 89 carries. That makes him the area’s second-leading rusher at the midway point of the regular season.

Although she’s still only a sophomore, Maloney’s Morgan Kicklighter was the heavy favorite to win this year’s Meriden girls cross country championship. She went into last Tuesday’s meet as defending champ and was putting up the best times this season among the city teams. Kicklighter did not disappoint. She cut more than a minute off last year’s winning time, blazing the 3.1-mile layout at Hubbard Park in 21:52 to out-pace the field by 1:05.

WES TERZI

ARIANA PERLINI

Sheehan quarterback Wes Terzi was a bright spot in last year’s Class M quarterfinal loss to Joel Barlow. Last Friday, in the rematch, he was absolutely stellar. Terzi completed 15 of 18 passes for 284 yards and four TDs in the Titans’ 49-6 romp. It was another night of high-efficiency offense for Terzi and the T-Men. With Terzi completing better than 65 percent of his passes (53-for-81, 848), Sheehan is averaging 47 points and 434 yards a game.

Cheshire volleyball improved to 15-0 this past week and, along the way, earned coach Sue Bavone career win No. 500. No. 1 in the Class LL playoff rankings, the Rams have been so dominant they’ve swept all but one match. And while they’ve been getting offense from multiple sources, their anchor on defense is indisputably Ariana Perlini. The junior libero had a season-high 25 digs against Amity, the lone team to take a set off Cheshire so far.

Late rally falls short for Rams Cheshire’s McAlinden notches 2 long TDs in loss to Fairfield Prep Record-Journal staff

CHESHIRE — The Cheshire football team battled back in its quest for its first victory of the season, but eventually dropped a 28-14 SCC Tier 1 contest to Fairfield Jesuits 28 Prep under the lights Rams 14 of Alumni Field on Friday night. The loss dropped the Rams to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in SCC Tier 1 on the season. The Jesuits (4-1, 2-1) opened the

Iaropoli threw four TD passes, including three to Finn Duran. The first was a 61-yard connection with 4:59 left in the first quarter.

The pick led to Iaropoli’s third touchdown toss of the half, and his second to Duran. This one went for 10 yards with 30 seconds left on the clock to push the lead to 21-0.

Later in the quarter, Cheshire gambled with a pass on a fake punt, but didn’t convert. Alex Frione intercepted Iaropoli to start the fourth quarter, which gave the Rams great starting position at their own 46, but they didn’t take advantage. The Jesuits expanded their lead midway through the fourth with Duran’s third TD catch, a 57-yard reception, to push the lead to 28-14 with 6:12 left in the game. Those would be the final points of the contest.

The Jesuits doubled their lead to 140 on their first play of the second quarter, a 50-yard touchdown catchand-run by Sam Roberto down the left sideline. On Cheshire’s next drive, QB Colby Griffin found wide receiver Dan Skibitcky, who leapt over two defenders for a 52-yard catch. That drive, however, ultimately stalled on a Nick Morris interception of Griffin

Guilford (12-3) fought hard to spoil the special night, but the Rams were not having any of it. “After the week we’ve had, relief is one of the things I

am feeling, but I am also excited,” Bavone said. “I am excited for the girls because they can remember they are a part of this. The kids are what make us tick. I would not have gotten to 500 if they did not pull it through tonight.” Bavone also reflected on what this milestone means to her. “It means a long time. I just keep thinking about how many kids went through this program [who] I coached and who still stay in

Cheshire was still able to take momentum into the halftime locker room. Jake McAlinden received the ensuing kickoff and trucked it back 95 yards to get the Rams on the board.
