Two World War II veterans will be co-marshals of Cheshire’s annual Memorial Day Parade this year. They are Ralph Rowland and Irvin Daubert, both 98. They are long-time Cheshire residents. According to John White, a spokesman for the Cheshire Veterans Council, the parade is honoring the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, which occurred 75 years ago on June 6, 1944, along the French coast. Nature’s healing and restorative powers explored in library talk By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

For the past 20 years, ecopsychologist Marlow Shami has taught workshops and meditations to promote the premise that the quality of our lives is directly related to our relationship to nature. The nature-based educator, artist and writer’s recent presentation “Experiencing Nature as Healer” was held April 16 at Cheshire Public Library. Shami quickly connected with her audience, inviting those who turned out to recall their experiences with

nature. She asked if anyone had a special place: a rock, a tree or garden when they were children. “Do you have that place now—and how does it make you feel?” she asked. Many answered “calm” or that they felt stresses melt away after a nature pause. “We are wired into nature,” Shami explained to the group, mainly made up of women with a few men in the mix. The problem is that we are so busy and “we are living in a culture that is consumer-oriented,” she said. People tend “to forget about the connection to na-

ture” and how important it is to our well-being. From her own experiences, Shami finds her behavior and decisions are more sustainable the more she is connected with nature. She also has been able to tap into sources of energy and creative urges by being present with the natural world. “Nature is powerful medicine,” she said. “Use what serves you in a healing, life-giving way.” “My mission tonight is to remind you what you already know, and to leave you with a tool or two to tap into those moments of grace,” Shami said. To do that, Shami taught the group to listen and hear nature’s language through a sensory experience lesson outside and a guided meditative session.

Marlow Shami

Nature’s language is a sensory language, Shami said. “You can imagine yourself there. You might be touched by the wind, the lake, the smell of the wet ground.” Nature speaks to us in so

many ways, but it’s not in English, or Spanish or Hebrew, she said. “Even the laughter of a child is nature’s language.” See Nature, A6

school received the suit. “As some of you may be aware, earlier this week, following a fair process, a student was expelled,” Anderson wrote. “This student was given a number of chances to adhere to our expectations, and the rules and code of conduct of Cheshire Academy. Contrary to what you may have read, our decision was not based on an opposition to political dialogue.” West Hartford attorney James Sullivan, who represents the family, couldn’t be reached for comment. He told the Law Tribune that Cheshire Academy expelled Mancini recently, one day after his father unveiled a website, “The Real Cheshire Academy,” detailing the school’s disciplinary action against his son. According to the lawsuit, Cheshire Academy football coach David Dykeman assured the family that the

academy is an all-inclusive community that would tolerate conservative views. The family relied on those assurances and enrolled their son in 2018, the suit said. During a class discussion about Shakepeare’s play “Twelfth Night,” Michael Mancini made general observations about sexual identity and the lack of acceptance of transgenderism in England up until the 20th Century. According to Theodore Mancini’s website,“The teacher continued on by stating that ‘some people legitimately identify as a man or women or non-binary.” His son responded by saying that “If a man thinks he is a woman or a woman a man, it shows legitimate hormonal or mental disorder. Although those that identify as things such as Demi-Queer Fox-Kin are just looking for attention,” according to the elder Mancini’s website. He claimed two classmates

The complaint also detailed an incident in a mandatory Martin Luther King Jr. workshop. Mancini said “obviously I am black” when asked to say “something that is obvious about your identity.” The lawsuit says the response was “an attempt at making a joke” and said Mancini apologized.

The Cheshire Housing Authority's Board of Commissioners will hold an open, information session on its possible plans for acquiring and building upon land at1538 South Main Street.

The lawsuit claims a teacher reported the comment to administrators despite telling students nothing said would “leave the room.” Cheshire Academy suspended Mancini for five days and told the family it would not

While the general consensus is that people have five senses: smell, touch, sight, hearing and taste, Shami noted studies done by Professor Michael J. Cohen, identify 53 senses. Among those, are the sense of gravity, the sense of seeing without your eyes, sense of balance, thirst, mental senses include emotional senses like sadness, sense of design

and space, sense of mood as it relates to a color, and our ability to articulate. Armed with this bit of new knowledge, Shami sent the group outside for a sensory experience. On the group’s return, many of women experienced thinking of their families and children when outside in front of a shrub or tree or a garden of flowers. Rita Rossi from Prospect looked at the spring flowers in library garden at the front of the building. The blooms of one spring

flower reminded her of her daughter’s favorite color, purple. The garden also brought her thoughts of her favorite peaceful place, Our Lady of Lourdes shrine in Litchfield. Judy Brady and her friend Donna Walsh came back laughing after remembering their shared childhood friendship of climbing trees and being outdoors. “If you take away one thing tonight, it’s this: ‘We are a part of nature, not apart from nature,’” she said.

Town proceeds — with caution The Cheshire Town Council has voted to change the town's plan of conservation and development to allow for more growth on a stretch of Highland Avenue from East and West Johnson avenues to Creamery Road, which planners say is a challenge for developers. If approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission, this district could allow commercial businesses such as restaurants or offices there, but not residential development. As things stand, nearly all the affected properties are zoned industrial. This could be a great thing for development in the north end of town, provided that environmental issues receive due consideration — the district would allow flexibility when building on properties that have large wetlands. The potential for increased traffic congestion along Highland Avenue (Route 10) also needs to be considered.

One such property is the nearly 50 acres owned by Eversource south of Fieldstone Court. Voelker said it's awkwardly shaped and bisected by wetlands, making development difficult. Town Council Chairman Rob Oris thought the district could bring businesses that will grow the grand list and also provide services that people can't get in town. On the other hand, Councilor Tom Ruocco, who voted against the new district, said some of his constituents don't want to see retail built up on Route 10. But while commercial development in that portion of Highland Avenue could result in more traffic congestion, Voelker said he hopes the district will encourage good design as well as shared entrances to reduce the number of driveways and improve access between developments.

Given the wetlands and traffic concerns, it is to be hoped that a careful and Town Planner William Voelker said some of the un- thorough process will lead to an enhanced grand list while developed property on the east side of Highland Avenue avoiding undesirable side effects. is a challenge for builders under the current regulations.

Kampf From A1

The work on the board has paid off as Kampf traveled to the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association’s national championships at Cooper Mountain in Colorado in late March. Competing in the 10-11 Menehune Division, Kampf took second in slalom, giant slalom and in boardercross. Kampf also competed in slope style and halfpipe, but did not place in those events. In the overall standings, he finished third among 72 kids

in his division. “It’s just fun to do,” Caleb said this week. “It’s fun to go with your friends and competing. I Iove being on top of the mountain. I’ve been doing this since I was 4. My dad taught me.” Caleb is the son on Lucy and Josh Kampf. The family has lived in Cheshire for seven years. Caleb said his favorite event is the boardercross, in which four skiers speed down the mountain at the same time. “He’s made tremendous strides this year,” Okemo Mountain School coach Luke Bonang said. “Funda-

mentally, he’s very sound and we are very happy with the strides he’s made this year. He works hard and has a drive for racing.” When in Vermont, Kampf practices with his team on Mount Hood. There are five other Connecticut skiiers on the team. This was Kampf third year of competition. “It’s pretty awesome,” Lucy Kampf said. “When he gets up there, the only thing I don’t want him to do is fall. The one event that makes me the most nervous is boardercross. If they don’t keep their lines, they can crash into each other. “But I’m proud of him this year. He’s 11 years old and he made three podiums.”

The class is set to meet twice a week for 12 weeks, on Mondays and Fridays, 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m, beginning in May. A full YMCA membership is included during the program. Start date will be determined based on registrations. For more information, contact John Phillips at 203-272-3150, ext. 511.

Police: Town man struck car with hammer during road rage incident WALLINGFORD — A Cheshire man faces charges after police say he struck another person’s car with a hammer during an alleged road rage incident April 18.

Edward Anderson, 35, of 34 Grove St., Cheshire, was arrested Thursday, April 18, and charged with breach of peace, second-degree reckless endangerment, and third-degree criminal mischief.

Police responded to Citgo, 326 S. Colony Road, for a re-

port of a road rage incident, according to police. The incident began between Anderson and another driver on Route 15, with each driver claiming the other drove with intent to harass, the report said. Anderson and the other driver exited the highway in Wallingford and Anderson struck the other driver’s car with a small hammer, the report said. Police found a hammer in Anderson’s possession, the report noted. Anderson was taken into custody and later released on $10,000 bond. His court date was not immediately available. lsellew@record-journal.com 203-317-2225 Twitter: @LaurenSellewRJ

COMMENTARY

Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be things that last.” Furniture Barn owner Fred Reich made a similar observation. “There isn’t a market for this type of business anyAs I recall, it was by coincimore,” he said. “We don’t fit dence a few years ago that in any longer to where (cuswhile I was trying to clear out my mother’s apartment I tomers) want to shop.” came across an article entitled something like “Nobody Wants Your Parents’ Stuff.” There have been many similar articles, so it’s hard to recall the precise one. By Jeffery Kurz Record-Journal staff

So there’s at least a double whammy going on: the trend away from the mom-andpop shop and toward the mall or online, but also what’s perceived as a changing nature in people. Young people, we hear, don’t want to be tied down. They want

to be able to move from place to place without the worry of excessive baggage. Even though it’s been more than a decade, it’s probably still too early to adequately register the impact and consequences of another double

whammy, the advent of the smartphone, as in Apple’s phenomenally successful iPhone of 2007, and the rise of social media. When students exit a classroom with their noses in their See Kurz, A26

If you’re of the baby boom era, this is familiar territory. The furniture, heirlooms, memorabilia — pretty much anything — that comes under the general definition of “stuff ” as described in that headline is not nearly as prized as your parents, or even you, may have once assumed. There are those who have basements full of this “stuff,” the inheritance of generations, and it’s a dilemma. My parents grew up during the Great Depression and came of age during the Second World War. The things of the world — the tangible stuff that you could hold, put your finger on, wear, caress or even kiss — had value, precisely because it was tangible, and that value increased, almost exponentially, if that thing had connection to family, or friends, or history. “That’s Aunt Kate’s rug” was an explanation that needed no further explanation — at least I wasn’t going to ask for one. Now, times change and trends come and go, but there are those who suspect there’s something more fundamental going on these days, and that’s reflected in an observation recently made by a customer of Cheshire’s Furniture Barn, which is closing after more than a half century of business: ”These days, young people are not interested in quality. They want to change their decor all the time.

JORDAN DAVIS

ARAYANA AGLI

Here’s another good comeback story for Sheehan. Coming off injuries suffered in a car accident last March, junior Jordan Davis not only returned to help the Titans reach the Class M state semifinals in football in the fall, he’s blazing new ground this spring in track and field. Competing in javelin, Davis has finished first each time out, be it in SCC meets or at the R-J Invitational. He won the latter event at 169 feet, 5 inches, his season-best so far.

Arayana Agli came in the door as a freshman new to tennis and, by her sophomore year, was seeing time at No. 3 doubles. This spring, as a junior, she’s blossomed as a solid singles player for the Spartans. Playing in the No. 3 slot, Agli goes into this last week of April with a 4-1 individual record. She’s beaten opponents from Platt, Wilcox and Plainville in straight sets and lost to Hall. Her top match? A stirring 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 rally against New Britain.

JAMES THERIAULT

BROOKE LYNCH

The Wilcox baseball team carried streaks of six wins and four shutouts into the current week. The author of the latest was James Theriault. The junior fired a 5-inning no-hitter in Friday’s 13-0 win at O’Brien Tech. Theriault was overpowering. Of O’Brien Tech’s 15 outs, 13 were by way of the K. Theriault was also 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, following up on two-hit, two-bag games against Whitney Tech, Goodwin Tech and Bullard Havens.

The Southington girls lacrosse team scored 94 goals in getting out to a 5-2 start. Fourteen of those goals belonged to junior midfielder Brooke Lynch, who had four in last Monday’s 11-8 win over Berlin and three more in Thursday’s 13-9 loss to Amity. More than that, Lynch is a true field general. “She is super-consistent, leads on and off the field,” reported coach Jillian Pomposi. “Great midfield play. She’s always super-aggressive.”

JOHN VUMBACK

TORI TALENTO

How’s this for a turnaround? On Opening Day, the Maloney baseball team lost to Bristol Central 22-3. Just over two weeks later, the Spartans beat the Rams, 4-3, in 9 innings in Bristol. Sophomore pitcher John Vumback laid the foundation for that victory with six innings of four-hit ball and five strikeouts. Vumback did not get the decision, but he is due. He’s worked at least six full innings in all three of his starts vs. BC, Bristol Eastern and Berlin.

Though only a sophomore, Victoria “Tori” Talento already occupies big shoes for the Platt softball team. She’s the catcher and she bats No. 2 in the lineup. Last Thursday, Talento introduced herself to the city rivalry series with a big game against Wilcox Tech. Talento laced a RBI double in the first inning to get Platt on the board and later cracked her first varsity home run, a two-run shot in the fourth, to help the Panthers secure a 9-2 victory.

A generation is growing up that knows nothing but instant access at the swipe of a finger or the push of a button (someday, probably sooner than later, you won’t even have to bother with such touchy-feely things as pushing buttons or swiping fingers). How do you sell furniture to these people? If you weigh it against the expanse of human history, this has happened in a very short period of time, a very rapid move from the tangible to the virtual. And it’s a move also toward the ephemeral. Things that are in the cloud are not likely to last. Why should it come as a surprise that people who have grown up with this “reality” should not be inclined to be tied down? And yet, you have to wonder: Has human nature really changed? Nostalgia is as strong as ever, if not more. People still have great affection for the virtual games they played growing up, whether it’s Donkey Kong, or Oregon Trail or Legend of Zelda.
