Both accounts are FDIC-insured up to the maximum allowable limit. Platinum Savings offer available in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA. Fixed Rate CD offer available in AL, AZ, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NM, NV, NY, PA, SC and VA. Portfolio by Wells Fargo® customers are eligible to receive an additional interest rate bonus on these accounts.3 1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 12/10/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Wealth, Business Banking or Wholesale customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed.

2019 Dream Big! college savings competition

School Notes

The Robert T. Kenney Scholarship Program at the American Savings Foundation is accepting applications from current high school seniors, current college students and nontraditional adult students who will be enrolled in college for the 2019-2020 academic year. For more information and to apply, visit asfdn.org or call 860-827-2556. Application deadline is Sunday, March 31. The Women’s Club of Cheshire, Inc. is offering a scholarship to a Cheshire woman who is seeking to further her education at an accredited college for a better employment opportunity. For more information and an application, contact Jane Richards at 203-272-8249. Application deadline is Sunday, March 31.

All Night Grad Party The Cheshire High School PTO sponsors a substance-

Typically, parents of senior students plan the party, but rely on parents of underclassmen. Many help with decorations, fundraisers and more. Help is needed with food pickup and delivery, as well as a large space where volunteers can paint and store materials. Any parent who would like to help should email Maura Esposito and Laura Lombardo at AllNightGradParty@CheshireHighPTO.com or sign up online at surveymonkey.com/r/

NKJF2P6.

PTO PTO membership is not required to attend meetings; however, by joining, membership fees helps support all the initiatives the PTO engages in throughout the year to enhance Cheshire High School students. CHS PTO now offers the ability to pay for membership online. Visit the new CHS PTO website at cheshirehighpto.com. The Citizen prints achievements of local students. Policy requires verification from the school, i.e., a copy of the letter, email or certificate received by the student.

third grade students are asked to share artwork depicting what they want to do after they go to college. Fourth through eighth grade students are asked to answer in a 250-word essay how they will change the world after college. Entries are judged based on theme, originality and creativity. Drawings will also be evaluated based on

artistic design and attractiveness, while essays are also judged on overall grammar, spelling and punctuation. Printable entry forms, official rules and additional details can be found at CHETDreamBig.com. No purchase is necessary to enter or win. Entry deadline is Friday, March 29.

Saturday program for middle school girls Sacred Heart Academy, 265 Benham St., Hamden, has scheduled Experience Excelsior for girls in grades 5 to 8, 9 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 30. Richard Chevrolet has many green practices in place on site, including solar panels to power the facility, LED lights to reduce energy consumption, waterborne paint used in the body shop, computer controlled HVAC system, photocell controls for outdoor lighting, recycling waste oil and charging stations for electric vehicles. The Green Dealer program aligns with GM’s companywide efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. GM designed the program to encourage dealers to implement green initiatives as part of their operations, create a network for sharing best practices and help other dealers begin or advance their sustainability journey.

Mental health training

DELICATE ART Adele Kasinskas works on her pysanky egg Sunday afternoon at her home in Cheshire. Pysanky, or pysanka, comes from the Ukraine, it’s pronounced “PIH-sahn-kah,” with all short vowels. The art of pysanky involves "writing" often complex designs in wax on an egg. Repeated applications of wax and multiple dye baths follow, after which the designs are revealed when the wax layers are heated by candle flame and subsequently removed with gauze. The completion of one egg averages more than three hours.

Chesprocott Health District has scheduled free Mental Health First Aid training, over two days, April 2 and 4, 4 to 8:30 p.m. at Cheshire Town Hall, 84 Main St. A light meal is included. Registration is required and seats are limited. Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid 8-hour certificate training provides community members with tools to respond to someone who is in crisis. It also helps participants to recognize the signs and symptoms of a developing mental health or substance use problem. To register, visit eventbrite.com (event #55705034257) or contact Valerie English Cooper at 860-671-0674 or venglishcooper.mhfa@ gmail.com.

At last we have the beginning of a real New England winter. After those fits and false starts of the last two months, it snowed a real, measurable amount. That’s what winter is supposed to look like in the northeast. Snowshoe, ski, snowmobile and cross country enthusiasts can now get out and have some winter fun.

HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S MALE & FEMALE NOMINEES .

A19

..........

MADISON LARKIN

TYLER ROBERTSON

Sheehan girls basketball coach Mike Busillo likes to point out that junior Maddie Larkin does a lot of the “glue things” for the Titans. That stick-to-itiveness is paying off. With Larkin coming off the bench, pounding the boards and scoring 14 points, the Titans won their opening Class M state tournament games over Prince Tech and Sacred Heart to advance to the quarterfinals. They host Weaver on Thursday with a trip to the final four on the line.

It was deja vu all over again. For a second straight year, the Sheehan hockey team won the SCC/SWC Division III Tournament. For a second straight year, the Titans were led by goaltender Tyler Robertson, who repeated as Most Outstanding Player. The senior backboned the 2-1 semifinal win over Hand, then had another one-goal outing in the 10-1 waxing of JBWA in the final. Robertson and the Titans are seeded No. 4 in the D-III state tourney.

THERESA LYNCH

BOBBY ALLAN

A loss to Hillhouse in the second round of the Class L girls basketball touranment brought a close to the high school careers of Lyman Hall’s seniors, including Theresa Lynch. A true-blue collar player for LH, Lynch played all 23 games this year, averaging 4.7 points and 4.3 rebounds. As R-J sportswriter Sean Kroffsik said, Lynch “sets all the picks and does all the dirty work; an easy player to root for.” Lynch will continue her career at Manhattanville College.

For the Hall-Southington hockey team, advancing to the CCC South finals took some sting out of not qualifying for the state tourney. Southington’s Bobby Allan was a driving force in the conference run. The sophomore had a hat track in the 5-4 semifinal win over WMRP, including the game-winner in overtime. He scored two goals and assisted on a third in the 9-5 loss in the finals to E.O. Smith. For the season, Allan had 18 goals and 13 assists.

ELYSE BOOTHROYD

BRYCE MCCLENDON

As the first nominee from outside of the Record-Journal’s core schools, Coginchaug sophomore Elyse Boothroyd pushes the Athlete of the Week envelope. This is because she has pushed the envelope in the Lyman Hall/Cogichaug boys swimming program. Boothroyd broke the Coginchaug 6-dive record several times during the dual-meet season, hitting for a high of 237.05. She opened the postseason placing third in the SCC Championships at 383.45.

Playing alongside not only a 1,000-point scorer (John Soto), but a 2,000-point scorer (DeJuan Ransom) can get you lost in the headlines. Nonetheless, Wilcox senior forward Bryce McClendon has been a big part of the Tribe’s success over his four-year career. McClendon had the go-ahead basket in last week’s CTC quarterfinal win over Kaynor Tech. He’s averaging 6.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.5 steals going into the state tournament.

Tips for tracking wildlife By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

rels and other rodents, he said.

A thick fresh blanket of snow is the perfect canvas to search out clues of wildlife that live alongside us here in suburbia.

Nelson recommends amateur trackers pick up a copy of Tom Brown Jr.’s “Field Guide to Nature Observations and Tracking,” and “Tracking and the Art of Seeing: How to Read Animals Tracks and Sign,” by Paul Rezendes, which has color photos.

Not so fast, says long-time resident and well-known amateur naturalist, Eric Nelson. Looking for animal activity after snowfall can be a good time to find tracks, but tracking can be done at any time during the year, Nelson said. If you would wait a day after the snow, that would give the animals the chance to move about again and increase your chances of finding prints. More importantly, though, tracking involves a lot more than looking for animal footprints, said Nelson. Other clues of animal activity would include droppings and signs of feeding — for example nuts or acorns that have been chewed by squir-

“We can also track birds and insects,” he said. When tracking birds, you can find their footprints and also their nests. The best time to find the nests of birds is during nestbuilding season in the late winter and early spring, and again in spring and summer when the birds are busy catching insects to feed their nestling babies. Evidence of wildlife can also be found in other ways. Oak trees are great places to look for signs of mammals, deer, squirrel and wild turkeys. In this way, plant and tree identification are good skills

to have. A white oak’s bark is white, the leaves have rounded lobes, opposed to red oaks which have pointed lobes. Squirrels cache the acorns by burying them underground. In the winter, squirrels will dig them up. You’ll see the evidence by way of the ditches they make in the snow, the removed soil and leaf litter, said Nelson. Bears rub their backs on trees, whitetail deer will use their incisor teeth to scrape and eat the inner bark or floem layer. Male deer make antler rubs on aromatic trees. “Originally, it was thought deer rubbed the bark to remove velvet on the antlers,” Nelson said. Now we know deer “scent mark” the tree trunks, he said, adding that deer will mark multiple trees in a line to create a “scent trail.” “Smell is king of senses,” said Nelson. “They depend on their senses to learn

about each other, to find mates and to detect danger.” Wild canine, red fox and coyote, leave scat (fecal droppings) in prominent areas so other animals take notice. If you find bones and fur in dried out scat, it’s likely to be from a wild predator like a fox, coyote or bobcat. Meadow voles are interesting to seek out. They are a food source for a lot of predators, including cats, fox, coyote, hawks and owls. “Any area where you find voles, you’ll find other predators.” Much like humans, mammals use road systems to move about, said Nelson. When not using human-made trails, they’ll

make their own. It allows them to easily travel and helps conserve energy, he said. Meadow voles, for example, create little runways under the grass and in winter, under the snow. “Their runways look like bobsled tunnels,” said Nelson. Some of Nelson’s most coveted finds include the pelvic bone of a fox and intact deer antlers. Generally, deer lose their antlers in December and January. Oftentimes, smaller rodents will find them first and gnaw the calcium out of the bones, so when you actually come across them, “they are a treasure to find,” he said.

Foster, adoptive parenting sessions Klingberg Family Centers has scheduled Foster & Adoptive Parent Information Sessions for the first and third Wednesday, and the second and fourth Monday, of each month at the main campus building, 370 Linwood St., New Britain. The no-obligation session reviews how to share your home as a safe place for a child in need of foster care and how to provide stability as a therapeutic foster parent. An overview of the process and support provided to all foster and prospective

adoptive families will be reviewed. Walk-ins are welcome; RSVP preferred. For more information and to RSVP, contact Nicolin Carr at 860-832-5536 or nicolin.carr@klingberg.com or visit klingbergfosterandadoption.org.
