WOMEN – A WASTED RESOURCE September 2017 marked a monumental day for the women of Saudi Arabia. King Salman announced that women could obtain driving licenses from the 24th June 2018 without permission from a male guardian. By March 2019, it was reported that at least 70,000 women had been issued their licenses, and seven female driving schools were opened, quickly filling the missing market in the economy. Subsequently, the sales of cars rose by 145%, and due to joint demand, created a new market for insurance for women. Repair workshops are also expected to benefit. This would increase the incomes of people within the car industry, leading to a positive multiplier effect across Saudi Arabia, as these employees can afford to spend more in other industries. Saudi Arabia’s main export is oil that initially facilitated the growth of the economy. However, commodities are a very volatile market. Hence, after the price of oil plummeted in 2014, the young crown prince announced ‘Saudi Vision 2030’ to initiate the reform of the Kingdom, reducing reliance on the dwindling oil revenues and instead investing heavily in renewables.
