SITTING The Silent Killer

rolonged sitting…It’s the new smoking.

As I sit here in front of my computer, my thoughts turn to, well, sitting…and how it’s killing us. And it’s my job, as a fitness coach and personal-training studio owner, to get you moving because it could mean your life.

Studies have shown that we sit as much as 13 hours per day. Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, who coined the phrase, “sitting is the new smoking,” says that prolonged sitting can increase your

risk of developing serious illness, such as cancer, heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, high cholesterol and even depression. For every hour we sit, according to Dr. Levine, we lose two hours of our lives.

The World Health Organization has identified physical inactivity as the fourth biggest preventable killer on the planet, with an estimated 3.2 million deaths per year.

As humans, we are built to move, and moving in return helps keep us healthy. As a fitness coach, I see the adverse effects of prolonged sitting every day. An estimated 80 percent of our clients come in with some sort of pain or symptom due to lack of movement and mobility.

When you sit too long, your glutes (your butt) shut down and become weak. This forces other muscles to compensate for your glute weakness and often results in lower back, knee or hip pain. The upper body is affected as well, causing headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck and shoulder pain.

Worse yet, you are still prone to suffer from these weaknesses even if you participate in a consistent exercise program. When you prevent your muscles from activating, by sitting most of your day, they don’t perform at 100 percent and will become dormant. You can’t train a dormant muscle.

My job as a coach is to help individuals understand that being healthy isn’t just about working out, getting your 10,000 steps, or eating well. It’s about moving more often, taking care of your entire body and mind, thus creating a lifestyle to live happier, healthier and longer.

Here are a few tips to help decrease sitting in your life: • Reduce the actual time you sit each day; aim for only three to four hours • Move after every 30 minutes of sitting for at least two to five minutes • Pay attention to your posture • Exercise at least 30 minutes daily

• Perform 10 to 15 minutes of mobility or stretching exercises daily

We are ultimately responsible for our own health. It’s up to us to make it our top priority.

DIRECTIONS

1.) In large bowl, mix crabmeat, panko bread crumbs, parsley, bell pepper, mayonnaise, egg, seafood seasoning and lemon juice.

1 pound lump crabmeat 1/2 cup panko (Japanese-style) bread crumbs 1/4 cup parsley, finely chopped 1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper 2 tablespoons Duke’s mayonnaise 1 egg 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning 1 tablespoon fresh-squeezed lemon juice 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons butter lemon wedges or slices for garnish

2.) Using your hand scoop crab cake mixture and form into palm-sized cakes.

3.) Place cakes on a baking sheet or plate and refrigerate to set the cakes and let ingredient meld together.

4.) Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.

5.) Carefully place crab cakes into pan and cook 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown.

6.) Serve with lemon wedges, drizzled Lemon-Dill Sauce and salad for a light summertime meal.

LEMON-DILL SAUCE

1/4 cup Duke’s mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream 2 tablesppons French-style mustard 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon white pepper 1 tablespoon lemon juice dill weed to taste, finely chopped (fresh dill will provide more dill flavor, but the dried herb can be substituted) 1.) Combine all ingredients into bowl and mix thoroughly. Refrigerate for 1 hour prior to serving.
