SCHOOL CLOSURE POLICY

As a rule, when PPS cancels school due to unforeseen circumstances, such as inclement weather or power outages, the Enrichment programs will also be canceled. However, there are times when the decision may be made to still hold all or some enrichment classes that day.

In the event that classes have been canceled, a teacher or off-site business may have the option to hold class. Please check the EfL website (ppscommed.org), your email and/or contact the business where your class is scheduled to be held.

Please have a current email address in your profile.

REFUND POLICIES

A full refund will be issued if it is necessary for us to cancel a class/ program because of insufficient enrollment. If the enrolled student calls within three business days before the first class meeting, a refund will be issued, minus a $10 processing fee. If you cancel after the deadline, you will not qualify for a refund.

No refunds or credits will be issued for one-time programs unless request is received at least three business days in advance. Once a class begins, no refunds will be given. A $25 fee will be assessed for returned checks.

From the Summer Technology Exploration Program (STEP) camps to a variety of fun sports camps, there is something for everyone.

Our youth dance classes and the KKOS Drama camps return for another exciting season.

Summer Academies, offered through Curious Kids, are a great way to try a new activity.

They offer a wide variety of experiences from painting your own canvas to an all-day adventure in Saugatuck. Try one or try them all, before and after childcare is available.

Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis online, by phone or by stopping by the appropriate office.

Busy Bodies Busy Bodies is designed to accommodate the needs of exercisers of all ages and fitness levels. Build strength, endurance and balance while improving posture and stamina with this great all around workout! This class is a 50/50 combination of choreographed aerobic exercise and body sculpting, ending with a stretching segment guaranteed to ease your muscles, slow your breath and calm your spirit. Level 1: A one-hour beginner level class. Players will be introduced to ground strokes, volleys, serves, and overheads as well as positioning on the court for singles and doubles. This class will meet others and a “Fun” way to exercise. Ages 18+ Level 2: This is the next step after completing the Level 1 class or for those who may have played the game in the past and are looking to get started again. This 1½ hour class will review and practice the shots covered in the Level 1 class with emphasis placed on more competition, including singles and doubles play.

Ages 18+ Level 3: This class is for 2.5 to 3.0 level players. It introduces strategy and positioning for both singles and doubles play. Each session will feature drills/situational point play followed by supervised competitive match play. Ages 18+

Junior Tennis Junior Tennis will introduce players to basic tennis skills, scoring, court positioning and etiquette. Age appropriate equipment will be used to aid in skill and confidence building.

Ages 3-6 (Red Ball) - Introduction to simple stroke mechanics, balance, throwing, catching and footwork.

A 36’ court, a softer and slower ball, and a lower net will be used to aid in skill and confidence building.

Ages 7-8 (Red Ball) - The focus is on developing rally skills, working with a partner, footwork, and stroke mechanics with the goal of working toward point play. A 36’ court will be used to help develop rally skills and develop confidence.

Ages 9-11 (Orange Ball) - Learn the fundamental grips, footwork and swing paths. Rally and serve skills will be a predominate theme, with the goal of playing points. A 60’ court and a slower orange ball will be used to help develop rally skills and confidence.

Ages 12-18 (Green/Yellow Ball) - Learn fundamental grips, footwork, and stroke mechanics. An emphasis on rally and serve skills will help players to learn the fundamentals of how to play a match.

Champion Force Athletics is a fun and exciting program for students ages 4-15 with or without previous experience. Students will learn jumps, kicks, arm motions, stunting, cheers and chants and learn a pom dance routine. Students will learn the necessary skills needed for school cheerleading tryouts. Our program works to build self-confidence, poise, self- esteem and physical fitness. Division 4 is an advanced division for returning students. This camp provides instruction and practice of the fundamentals used to be successful in the game of basketball. Campers will work with current and former Mustang basketball coaches and players in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Current Portage Northern players and coaches will run this camp focusing on offensive skills.

Football Camp @ CHS K-6 Come join this instructional and fun youth

football camp! The coaching staff will run a Punt, Pass and Kick competition in the morning.

During the afternoon, players will participate in a 7 on 7 tournament. The teams will be picked at random and there will be one coach working with each team. Incoming Grades K-6

7-12 PC Coach Mick Enders will be conducting this camp, open to all area players. Special attention will be given to all offensive and defensive positions. Bring tennis shoes, football cleats and, if you attend a different district, bring your own helmet. Lunch provided. Football Camp @ NHS This camp will provide each athlete with a solid foundation of the basic fundamentals of power training and football. All athletes will receive instruction on strength, speed and conditioning training, along with football skills and techniques.

This 6 day camp will meet June 18, 19 & 20 and will resume on July 23, 24 & 25. Athletes must bring a padlock, football cleats, tennis shoes, shorts, t-shirt and a healthy snack. PAC GENERAL INFORMATION Portage Aquatic Club was developed for age group swimmers who wish to cultivate their swimming ability. The program runs September through July. PAC is open to swimmers ages 6 and older who can swim the length of the pool. Participants are encouraged to swim the maximum number of practices offered. All new swimmers will need to be assessed to assure proper placement. Fees: Monies collected through PPS Enriched for Life are used to cover administrative and coaching fees as well as costs associated with running and maintaining a pool. Swimmers who choose to compete must register with USA Swimming. See the Portage Aquatic Club website for more information.

Summer Technology Exploration Program FREE Academic Camps (pgs 23-27) STEP camps are offered free of charge for all Portage Public School

Students with funding from the Portage Education Foundation. With help from our underwriting sponsor, Eaton Corporation, students have access to engaging and creative learning environments provided by our wonderful PPS teachers, as well as programs from our amazing partner organizations, Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center and Western Michigan University.

The Portage Education Foundation (PEF) was founded in 1990 and awards almost $50,000 each year in scholarships, grants and program sponsorship.

Enroll early! Camps fill up fast. Please note: A $10 nonrefundable administrative fee will be charged per camp. Students must be enrolled as a full-time PPS student in the school year 2018-2019 to be eligible for the STEP camps.

This camp is for aspiring theater gurus. Students will learn social skills through team building exercises. They will learn all about the theater process including special effects such as the green screen and technology. Participants will use their creativity to playwright, make costumes and props and learn makeup artistry. My First Self Driving Car

This survey of how the human body works includes lots of hands-on lab work and an overview of health careers including at least one medical field trip. Incoming grades 7-12

This class is for students who would like to explore the world of microcontrollers and examine elementary problems and solutions for self-driving cars. Students will be introduced to the Arduino microcontroller by sequencing through several basic lessons. This knowledge of sensors and motor control will be used to program an Arduino controlled 3D printed model car. Extraordinary Equestrians You’ll be riding in style on the extra special day of horse play at Lou-Don Farms in Galesburg. Lou-Don Farm is one of the most established equestrian facilities in Southwest Michigan. It’s situated on 102 sprawling acres and has been in existence since the 50’s. Kate Blanzy will be our guide as we tour the stables and tack room. We’ll learn about grooming and safety before we saddle up. All Curious Kids will have the opportunity to ride English or Western style. All riders must wear a helmet. A bike helmet works great! Riders must also wear long pants, socks and hard-soled shoes (boots preferred). Each cowboy and cowgirl will receive a souvenir horseshoe to take home. It’s Peace, Love and Little Donuts! We will be treated to a tour and watch as they customize our own breakfast. After a little donut picnic, we are off to downtown Kalamazoo to visit Bimbo’s Pizza. Each child will prepare his or her own delicious pizza them gobble it up. Bimbo’s is family owned and has been open since 1959. Next on the agenda is a stop at Food Dance. Food Dance has been a staple of the local restaurant scene for over 20 years. They are committed to building a thriving and sustainable local food system. A tour of the premises will show us how all that great food comes to the table. And we’ll get the opportunity to taste some yummy items made right there at the bakery! Up next - a walk to the Kalamazoo Valley Museum to help us digest all that good food. The Museum has many hands on activities that will keep us moving and engaged. Do you have room for more? We will start our day with a guided indoor tour that focuses on the uniqueness of Meijer Gardens combing both horticultural and sculptural elements! Highlights include grass that grows taller than a house, plants that can count and a sculpture with more than 1,500 pieces! We will take a break for a yummy picnic lunch then it’s off to explore the gigantic grounds. While our food digests, we will be treated to a tram tour of the sculpture park. This popular academy will instruct our Curious Kids in the art of glass fusing. Palee Haney of the Art Bayou will guide us in the basics of making a sparkling sun catcher. Glass fusing is like making shrinky dinks! Layers of glass are melted together to make a kaleidoscope of colorful images on your 4 X 4 piece of glass. Your piece will need to be fired in the kiln before it’s ready to go home. Parents will need to pick up their child’s completed piece from Curious Kids about a week after the project is fired. Summer Academy Registration Information Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. You may register by phone or online. To register in person, complete the registration form and bring to the appropriate location.

Registration will be available at 1010 W. Milham (Community Education Center) site before Friday, June 15 and after Monday, August 13. From June 25 to August 8, you may register in person at 12th Street Elementary, 6501 S. 12th Street. We are closed June 18 – 22, July 4 and August 9 & 10. Registrations are taken M-F from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Once we have received your original registration form, you are welcome to add academies over the phone and online. We accept cash, check, VISA, Mastercard and Discover. To register online visit www.ppscommed. org. Please be sure to complete your child’s profile as completely as possible before starting the registration process. REGISTRATION CANNOT BE COMPLETED UNLESS ALL REQUIRED FIELDS HAVE BEEN FILLED IN. If you bypass required information, you will receive an error message when you try to complete the transaction.

Confirmations are not mailed out for the Academy Program. If you provide an email address in your profile, you will receive a confirmation via email each time you register for a program. Plan to arrive at the scheduled time unless otherwise contacted. No spots will be held without payment.

A one time non-refundable $8.00 registration fee will be charged to all participants at the time of initial registration. The registration fee includes a Curious Kids t-shirt to be worn while attending the academy program. Additional t-shirts may be purchased for $8.00 each. For those who register by mail or online, t-shirts may be picked up anytime or on the first day of attendance. Students registering in person will receive their t-shirts at the time of registration.

PLEASE NOTE: Academy participants are registered by class codes – please be sure to double check codes when filling out the registration form, especially if the academy meets on more than one date. Your child will be enrolled in the academies according to codes written on the registration form.

Please note a change in locations this year! Some academies will be held at 1010 W. Milham (Curious Kids – Milham) but most will be held at 12th Street Elementary, 6501 S. 12th Street.

To be eligible to participate in the Curious Kids Summer Academy Program, a student must be six years of age or have completed a full year of kindergarten.When an academy reaches maximum enrollment, no others will be accepted for that date. To avoid disappointment, you are encouraged to enroll early.

The Curious Kids Summer Academy Program of Portage Public Schools is a non-profit program.

Fees assessed for academies are used for salaries of instructors, counselors, and other expenses connected with the program. It is necessary, therefore, that a minimum number of people enroll in each academy. If enrollment is not sufficient, it may be necessary to cancel the academy or combine it with another academy. If an academy is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you will be notified before the beginning date. Come at your registered time unless otherwise contacted.

NOTE: Please be aware that half-day academies do not include lunch unless specifically stated in the description. If you need child care before and/or after academies, arrangements with the School Age Child Care Program need to be made at least 2 days in advance.

EARLY DROP-OFF & LATE PICK-UP Children should not be dropped off for an Academy earlier than 10 minutes before the academy is scheduled to begin. Children found in the building at inappropriate times will be taken to the Child Care program where parents will be responsible to pay for services. Please make plans to have your child picked up at the scheduled arrival time. If you are late in picking up your child from an academy, efforts are made to call you. The Academy Counselors will follow your instruction on the registration form as to: Taking your child to the Curious Kids Child Care Program where: a. Your child has been pre-registered b. Your child is not pre-registered and a fee of $5.00 per every 15 minute period your child is here will be charged.

These fees are due at time of pick-up.

Occasionally, due to traffic and/or road construction, our vans run behind schedule. If we will be more than ½ hour late, all efforts are made to notify parents.

WHAT TO BRING Lunches and snacks are provided to students on all full-day academies. Participants are welcome to bring their own snack lunch should they not wish to eat the provided one. Please mark the sack with your child’s name. Children may bring a backpack or book bag containing items to keep them occupied while traveling.

Due to academy schedules, time is not always planned to visit souvenir shops.

SPECIAL NEEDS: If your child has developmental or physical limitations, please contact Sue Haroldson at 323-6764 or Tammy Karmon-Hoffman at 323-6765, prior to enrollment in an academy. We will attempt to address your request depending upon the specific academy arrangements.

WRAP AROUND CHILD CARE Child Care services are available before and/ or after academies, BUT NEED TO BE SET UP IN ADVANCE. Our child care for academy days only requires you to complete a special “Academy Only” registration form and to pay a $10.00 registration fee. The hourly Wrap 36

ages 6-adult Around Child Care fee is $3.25 per hour. Once completed, your child may attend our child care program on any day that they have an academy scheduled. By doing so, you can drop your child off in the morning; they can attend the academy, have lunch with us, and participate in structured, fun activities until you pick them up. Forms are available in the Academy Office or in the Parent Resource Room. This program is only available on days that the children are enrolled in academies. Call 323-6764 for more information.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Parents are welcome to attend as a regular participant, paying the regular enrollment fee.

SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to families who qualify. The same federal guidelines used to determine eligibility for free or reduced lunches will be applied. Scholarship applications may be picked up at the Curious Kids Office. All applications should be turned in to the Curious Kids Office at least 24 hours prior to the Academy. The $8.00 registration fee is NOT COVERED by scholarship funds.

REFUNDS / INCLEMENT WEATHER In the event of inclement weather, every precaution will be taken to insure the safety of the children. Whenever possible, ACADEMIES WILL “GO” RAIN OR SHINE. Students are encouraged to come appropriately dressed for the weather conditions. Refunds will be made if: 1) an enrolled student cancels with FIVE business days of the scheduled academy, 2) it is necessary to cancel an academy due to insufficient enrollment, or 3) adverse weather conditions exist, or other unforeseen circumstances occur. We may attempt to schedule indoor events in place of outdoor events if there is inclement weather. An adjustment in academy fees could be made, if this is the case. Your understanding in this matter is appreciated.

A $10.00 processing fee will be charged for each refund transaction made when the refund is initiated by the client. No processing fee will be charged when an academy is cancelled due to weather or low enrollment.

Curious Kids Programs Our mission is to focus on the whole child and their family by providing a safe and nurturing environment which supports a high quality early childhood education.

We encourage each child to observe, question, and explore their environment.

EARLY LEARNING CENTER

The Curious Kid Early Learning Center provides a safe and caring learning environment for children beginning at six weeks of age until they enter elementary school. We are a tuition-based program and offer several options to meet each family’s needs. Curious Kids has a 4 Star Rating through Great Start to Quality, which qualifies us to be considered a KC Ready 4’s Center. The benefit of our participation with KC Ready 4’s is that some families are eligible to receive tuition assistance for their 4 year olds who attend five days a week.

SCHOOL AGE CARE During the school year, School Age Care is available at our Milham site for children who attend Haverhill and Central Elementary as well as all middle schools.

Busing is provided in cooperation with Portage Public Schools Transportation Department.

On Site Care is available at Angling Road, Amberly, Moorsbridge, Lake Center, Woodland and 12th Street Elementaries.

• Due to construction around the new middle school, this summer will look very different than in the past. We will be moving our Milham summer programs to the 12th Street Elementary. • All summer long our School-Age campers are kept engaged with our weekly themes.

Several field trip options are offered to campers, as well as our Summer Academy Program.

Infants, toddler and preschool children alike benefit from the structure of the Creative Curriculum used at Curious Kids.

Upon entering our Bright Beacon and Safe Harbor preschools, children are introduced to school-readiness concepts. In addition to the academic exposure, our children learn to play and organize their days, reflect on their activities and problem-solve.

They will carry these skills with them as they move on to Kindergarten and their formative years.
