Good afternoon, and welcome back to The GBS Stadium for today’s game vs high-flying Bury Town.
We extend a welcome to their players, officials and supporters, and also our own fantastic supporters and volunteers, of course.
It’s been a tough start for our new manager Michael Brothers since he came to the club in November in terms of results - but a glance at the form since Christmas shows in the last 5 matches, we’ve gained 3 draws and 2 defeats, and even those defeats have been quite tight affairs - the first being an 87th minute winner for Cambridge, and then conceding a late penalty only 2 minutes after getting back on level terms from being 2-0 down away at Newmarket.
The performances have seen a massive improvement in that time, and I know Michael and the lads are striving hard to convert those performances into wins - hopefully starting today!
We know Bury Town are also battling for points as they aim to get back above Felixstowe at the top, so we should be in for a decent game this afternoon.
Thanks so much for your kind support at recent matches.

IPSWICH WANDERERS CLUB HISTORY
> The Club started as an under 14’s boys team in 1980. Two yrs later they entered the lowest division of the Ipswich Sunday League.
> Joined the newly formed Eastern Counties Division One sponsored by Jewsons in 1987 as founder members.
> Home games were played at our present ground at Humber Doucy Lane, under the name of Loadwell Ipswich. Jimmy Barker became a very influential chairman and he negotiated a name change to Lancaster Ipswich FC before we eventually became Ipswich Wanderers. Jimmy died in November 1994 and his presence is sadly missed. Thankfully after all his work he saw the floodlights switched on in September 1994 in a match against Ipswich Town.
> Great ground improvements were made in the early years under the direction of Development Officer Roger Woshalo and ground Manager Tim Davey.
> A losing Suffolk Senior Cup appearance in 1996/97 lead to the following season becoming Champions of Division One, under the Chairmanship of Alan Haste, nine points clear of Maldon Town and losing only three league matches all season. Reaping the rewards of a successful youth policy which saw numerous trophies filling the clubhouse cabinet, a well organised side with a good balance between youth and experience saw us establish ourselves as a Premier Division side for a number of seasons until we suffered relegation on the last day of the 2002/3 season at Wisbech.
> The following season saw Jason Dozzell join the Club as Manager and after a midtable finish in his first campaign, the second season saw the Club sweep to the 1st Division title and with the assistance of Kevin Cunningham and Glynn Hague, the team finished 7th in the Premier Division in 2005/6, with the League’s second best defence with home crowds on average exceeding 100.
> At the end of the 2005/6 Jason Dozzell and Chairman David Bugg left. Local businessman Ed Nicholls became Chairman and John Clarkson was appointed Manager having arrived with a reputation from the West Country. During the season he guided the club to the final of the Ridgeons League Cup, the 5th round of the FA Vase and a Suffolk Premier Cup Semi Final against Ipswich Town.
> At the end of the campaign John left the Club and with an exodus of players, the Club appointed ex player Louis Newman to the role, Louis built a young, inexperienced squad and after a poor start to the campaign which included some record defeats, was replaced by another former player Steve Buckle who was brought in to rebuild the squad and hopefully retain the Clubs’s premier status. Unfortunately Steve was unable to prevent relegation and the only positive from the season was the Reserves capture of the Chell Trophy defeating Wroxham.
> Despite Steve’s best efforts over the following few seasons the Club failed to build a promotion push throughout the campaigns and after a poor start to the 2011/12 season, Steve and Assistant Paul Grainger parted company with the Club. New chairman Terry Fenwick appointed Glenn Read and he brought in his own players and former Stowmarket Town boss Steve Jay as his assistant. He quickly revamped the squad and had the Club climbing the table before the end of the season.
> The 2012/3 season saw the Club just fail to clinch promotion to the Premier Division and lose on penalties in the semi final in the First Division Cup. The season did finish on a high as the Club clinched its first ever Suffolk Senior Cup trophy defeating local rivals Whitton United in the final. It was a remarkable victory coming from a goal down in normal time and then from 3-0 down in the penalty shoot out.
> 2013/14 saw promotion achieved with two long unbeaten runs ensuring a return to the Premier Division, we also lost a tight Senior Cup final against Whitton United and set a new club record with a 12-1 win over Downham Town.
> The 2014/15 was mixed as we adapted to Premier Division and finished 9th and enjoyed a good run in the FA Vase but off field the club lost one of its driving forces Roger Wosahlo mid-season.
> In 2015-16 we defeated Canvey Island in the FA Cup and enjoy our best ever FA Vase run but with a heavy fixture backlog, relegation fears were only ended just before the season end. Glenn stepped down at the end of the season and for 2016-17 the Club appointed Shane Wardley as Player/Manager.
> Shane’s first season saw us almost emulate our highest ever position, however, after a poor start to the 2017-18 season Shane resigned and following a disastrous spell under Mark Benterman, club legend Mark Goldfinch took over the side ably assisted by James Buckle and Daniel Thrower. Unfortunately, relegation could not be avoided and in 2018-19 we consolidated and lost in the Senior Cup Semi Final to Cornard.
> In 2019-20 with Stephen Boyle taking over as Chairman, we rebuilt and after a sticky spell in October we were closing in on the promotion pack and reached a Semi Final of the Suffolk Senior Cup before the season came to an abrupt end. With further additions on field and some good improvements off field under Stephen’s leadership, we then looked to gain the vital promotion required for us to take the next steps forward with a good squad. The start to the next season was positive and a second Senior Cup trophy was clinched in the delayed final with a single strike from Connor Field clinching the trophy.
> After a couple of Covid-19 disrupted and curtailed seasons, for the 2021/22 season Wanderers went into action in the Thurlow Nunn First Division South. With what became a tight run affair and particular rivalry with Buckhurst Hill also aiming for the title, it went almost to the wire, Wanderers finally having the upper hand, and lifting the trophy with a goal 10 seconds from time in the final home game. With the final of the Suffolk Senior Cup to follow, we finished the season with 26 straight wins, and a well deserved double of league and cup was won!
> The following season started with four cup fixtures in the opening 7 games, and a haul of just 3 points from the first 5 league games meant Wanderers were already playing catch up when our league campaign really got going. A run of 6 wins in an 8 game unbeaten run helped to move us up the table before another rare defeat. More wins followed until in January, we visited top of the table Thetford, which ended in a 1-2 defeat. After this, Wanderers embarked on another 17-game winning run to the end of the season, including coming from behind to avenge the result against Thetford, going above them and ultimately become Thurlow Nunn Premier winners - back to back champions - and into Step 4 football for the first time in the club’s history.
> The 2023/24 season, the first for the club in the Isthmian League North came with added pressure - both on and off the pitch. A poor start to the season on the pitch brought a change in September, with the departure of Mark Goldfinch & James Buckle. Glen Driver came in as manager, with the task of keeping the club clear of relegation. Off the pitch was a mammoth job with a huge amount of work needed to pass the ground grading requirements to stay at this level. The inspection in April brought a great deal of relief, and along with the efforts of Glen and his team on the pitch, meant the aims for the season were achieved. Now to move forwards into 2024/25 and properly compete...

VIEW FROM THE BOSS
The management and squad have been putting in a lot of hard work, and while the results haven’t quite reflected that yet, the progress and determination are clear. Picking up points on the road is always valuable, but we feel at stages there was more for the taking!
With the squad and club pushing in the right direction, that first win seems like a matter of when, not if. What’s next on the fixture list? Bury today will be a tough one but an exciting one to be involved in! Another chance to turn performances into three points!
Would like to say how thankful we have all been to the supporters who have travelled and continued to support us through this transition!
The club behind the scenes are continuously striving to build the club and the improvements are there to be seen!
So 15 games to go 45 points up for grabs! Let’s all stick together work hard and see where that gets us!

We welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Bury Town FC
CLUB HISTORY
The club was founded by Mr William Lake at a meeting in the Suffolk Hotel. The original name of the club was Bury St Edmunds FC and the first committee of the club elected to choose royal blue as the club’s colours.
The club took up residence at Kings Road, also know as the Cemetery Road ground, in 1888. Kings Road was the first football ground in East Anglia to operate floodlights when on Monday 12th January 1953, the Blues played their first ever floodlit game against Cambridge City in front of 2,105 spectators. A total of 14 bulbs of 1500 watts illuminated the Suffolk skyline for the first time and history was created. The lights were financed by the Bury Town Supporters Club. A notable player for the club in the early days was Reginald De Courtney Welch who appeared as a defender for Bury St Edmunds in 1877. De Courtney Welch was a member of The Wanderers side that won the first ever FA Cup in 1872 and he also played in the first ever official international match for England, against Scotland in November 1872. The club was one of 11 founder members of the Suffolk County Football Association in 1885 and has won the Suffolk Premier Cup on 13 occasions.
The clubs name was changed by a vote to Bury Town in September 1885, however 10 years later the members chose to adopt the full name of the town back as the name, before changing to Bury United in 1908. In 1923 the clubs members decided that the name ‘United’ was no longer appropriate as there were a number of sides in Bury St Edmunds, and decided to revert to Bury Town, which has remained to this day.
The club played in various local leagues until 1935 when it became a founder member of the Eastern Counties League. The club spent a total of 22 consecutive seasons in the Eastern Counties League, finishing as runners up in 1937-38. The Blues claimed the ECL title in the 1963-64 season as part of an historic treble, as they also captured the ECL Knockout Cup and the Suffolk Premier Cup.
This success saw the club move to the Metropolitan League and they kicked off their first ever Metropolitan game against Charlton Athletic ‘A’ at Kings Road in front of 1,150 spectators, Bury running out 1-0 winners.
Season 1965-66 was another successful season and another treble haul of trophies as the club stormed to the Metropolitan League title, won the Metropolitan League Cup and the Suffolk Premier Cup again. By this time the club were averaging over 1,000 supporters at their home matches and interest in the club was at an all time high.
In 1968, the Blues reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup and drew Third Division side Bournemouth & Boscombe at Kings Road. 3,000 spectators assembled and witnessed Bury hold the Football League side to a goalless draw. The replay saw Bournemouth win through by 3 goals to 0 at Dean Court. The season had further success when the Blues won the Metropolitan League title for a second time.
The clubs success resulted them taking the bold step to join the Southern Football League for the 1971-72 season. The club struggled to adapt to their new surroundings and after five seasons, decided to take the decision to re-join the Eastern Counties League, a decision that proved unpopular with supporters.
On Wednesday 28th April 1976, Bury Town played their final match at the historic Kings Road ground when West Ham United were the visitors. 1,750 watched on as the sides drew 2-2, and a pitch invasion signalled the end of the Blues spiritual home. Bury Town moved into their current Ram Meadow ground in 1978 and collected the Suffolk Premier Cup as a reward.
The Blues spent a total of 11 seasons back in the ECL and their most successful moment of that time came in their final season when the reached the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and were drawn away at Football Conference leaders Enfield. The sides drew 0-0 at Southbury Road and returned to Ram Meadow for the replay, however in front 2,500 supporters, the visitors sneaked home 1-0 to reach the First Round Proper.
The 1987-88 season saw ambition return to the club and Bury were promoted to the Southern League. After a few seasons of promising results and large home crowds, the Blues failed to reach the Premier Division, the closest they came was finishing 4th in 1988-89. Years of overspending on players and ground improvements finally caught up and the club drifted into decline as the crowds drifted away. On the 4th May 1996, the Blues were relegated at Redditch United from the Midland Division of the Southern League, back to the Eastern Counties League.
The club spent another 10 years in the ECL, and despite some early seasons of struggles, success coincided with the appointment of former Colchester United captain Richard Wilkins to the manager’s seat. The club reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase in 2005 and then the Semi Final in 2006. Crowds rose back up and after two consecutive runners up spots in the Premier Division of the ECL, the club were promoted to the Isthmian League for the first time in their history.
visitors to BURY TOWN FC
The stay lasted two seasons and after adjusting to a higher level in 2006-07 with a 17th place finish, the following season saw the Blues finish in 7th position.
The FA re-organisation in 2008 saw Bury moved into the Southern League for a third spell of membership. A successful campaign saw Bury finish in 7th position in the Midland Division table, reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, losing 4-2 at Alfreton Town, and reach the Semi Final of the Southern League Cup, however in 2009-10, Bury Town clinched the Southern League Midland Division Championship on the final day of the season with a 3-0 home victory over Marlow in front of 1,550 supporters. The Blues piped Hitchin Town to the title, scoring 115 goals during the campaign and collecting 102 points to gain promotion. Another move across the pyramid saw the Blues re-join the Ryman League for the 2010-11 season, entering the Premier Division. A great season saw Bury finish third, but go out of the play off’s to Lowestoft Town. There was however some silverware for the boardroom as Bury defeated Needham Market 2-0 in the final of the Suffolk Premier Cup at Portman Road.
20011-12 saw the club lift the Ryman League Cup with a victory over East Thurrock United and again finished in the play off places, but lost out to AFC Hornchurch in the Semi Final. 201415 saw our spell in the Premier Division come to an end after 5 years with relegation to Division One North. In our last two seasons back in Division One North we have finished in 13th and 11th place. 2017-18 saw the Blues finish 9th and reach the final of the Suffolk Premier Cup.
2018-19 saw the Blues press for the play off places and a hope of a return to the Premier Division. It was a successful season with a 6th placed finished achieved, the best finish the club has had since relegation in 2015.
Following a couple of disappointing seasons, Ben Chenery left the club following 9 years in charge and was replaced by former professional Cole Skuse who turned fortunes around and saw the Club into the Play Off’s at the end of the 2023-24 season, but in front of 1,222, the Blues went out to Brentwood Town in a home semi final tie.
