Jon Emmett is Masters World Champ Sailing Today with Yachts & Yachting writer Jon Emmett has won his class at the ILCA Masters World Championships in Barcelona. Jon, who has multiple national titles to his name in the class, previously known as the Laser Radial, won the Worlds with a day to spare, having won every race bar two. He narrowly missed out on winning the final two races, which were photo finishes. After 12 races his score was an impressive 14 points. He said: “I had a good week and was really pleased to win it. I have to thank James Gray and all the girls in Weymouth for letting me join in their training, that really helped. I feel really happy and pretty tired. I don’t know what’s next but very much looking to getting back on the Olympic circuit as a coach.” Jon was racing in the ILCA 6 category for Apprentice Masters, between 35 and 45 years of age.

orld Sailing has complied admirably with the stipulations of the International Olympic Committee, which requires modern Olympic sports to be youth-friendly. Full marks, then, to the new Olympic windfoiling discipline known as the iQFOiL, which has taken the idea to its logical conclusion and now has a class for toddlers. The sailors in the class, as the photo demonstrates, are barely out of the cradle, so tiny that they are dwarfed by the bay of Marseille’s lapping wavelets. It must be terrifying for these young competitors to be out there, on vast seas. Whether or not World Sailing anticipated that the class would be so attractive to little’uns remains unclear, but we’re sure the IOC is pleased. It’s bound to boost sailing’s standing and will no doubt do well on social media. Gotta start ‘em young after all!
