ABOUT THE ISSUE
“FINISH STRONG”. It may sound impossible every time you hear it. Finishing strong is the attitude of believing you can do something and having the courage and determination to see it through to the end. Will you give up or give it all? Will you go the extra mile or get an excuse? The only person that possesses the power to choose your response is you. When you face life’s biggest challenges, you may face the temptation to quit or compromise your standards. Always remember, you have all it takes to finish what you started.
This issue of ChelseaConnect reminds us that even if we have unfinished tasks in 2022, we can still begin anew and finish strong. This 2023, let us learn from our past and keep on pushing and stretching toward the goal set before us. Starting a new project or achieving a goal can be daunting, but it is important to persevere. Even the most difficult challenges can be conquered with the proper attitude and the right motivation.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

The ABCs of maintaining Unity in Diversity
Raymundo Martin Escalona President, Udenna Corporation
Accept People
Kapag sinabi mong ACCEPTED mo sya, you can see that they have a right to be their own unique self. That means having a right to their own feelings, thoughts and opinions. When you accept people for who they are, you let go of your desire to change them. Ang pinaka ayaw nating gawin ay to control someone, diba? So accept your team members’ strengths and weaknesses. And then believe in them.
Believe in each other
Importante ang TIWALA sa isang grupo. Because when you trust your team members, you actually empower them to own their success. And when they own their success, they can handle adversity better, take responsibility for their actions and eventually, that enhances their own leadership skills. Ang ending, they become great leaders. And infectious leadership has a ripple effect; capable leaders develop additional leaders. Mas madaming competent leaders, mas madali ang trabaho.
Communicate Openly and Constantly
Sa isang relasyon, marami yang ups and downs. But a HEALTHY COMMUNICATION style can make it easier to deal with conflict and build a stronger and healthier partnership. In the business setting, we can apply this thru several ways like:
a. Having regular, informal get-togethers with team members across all levels to share ideas, initiatives and raise concerns.
b. Discouraging anonymous feedback. Huwag tayong mahiya magpakilala kapag may comments tayo ha. Wala din dapat personalanan kapag hindi mo gusto feedback ng katrabaho mo.
c. Having an open-door policy for meetings.
d. Sharing the company’s financial information and performance which you are already doing sa quarterly Birdge Report.

Cargo traffic at ports busier in 2023
Source: www.inquirer.net
Cargo and container traffic at local ports is expected to approach prepandemic levels by next year with borders further reopening and more trade activities resuming.
Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago told reporters they were projecting about a 7-percent to 8-percent growth in both cargo throughput and container traffic in 2023.
To achieve prepandemic levels, the cargo and container volume must reach 266.17 million metric tons (MT) and 7.87 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
From January to September, PPA data showed that cargo throughput was at 197.57 million MT, a 1.28-percent decline from 200.16 million MT in the same period a year ago.

Proposed monitoring system to deter smuggling in ports

Speed of cargo truck turnover is a key determinant of the cost of consumer goods as faster movement at the ports reduces a trader’s expenses.
An ambitious P877.6million container registry project covering the country’s ports will aid in ensuring national security by preventing the movement of cargoes involved in terrorism and the smuggling of drugs, the program’s proponent said.
Shiptek Solutions President and CEO Eugenio Ynion Jr. said the Trusted Operator Program-Container Registry and Monitoring System and Empty Container Storage Shared Service Facility container monitoring initiative aims mainly to eliminate the cost of container deposits while enhancing border protection and the government’s efforts against smuggling and terrorism.

Seven Characteristics of People Who Finish Strong
LinkedIn: Dr. Randall Spence
1
When you boil life down to its barest essence, it is about relationships: our relationship with God, spouse, family and friends.
In his book Halftime, Bob Buford says that most people focus the first half of their life on successs: building a career, making money, getting ahead. At “halftime” or mid-life, a moment comes when many stop and evaluate the first half of life and strategize the second half. Many trade the strategy of success for significance. Unfortunately, many arrive at the second half of life only to realize that they have sacrificed relationships in the pursuit of success. Those who finish strong do not make this mistake.
2 They are lifelong learners.
When we cease to be curious and learn, we cease to grow and when we cease to grow, we begin to die.
The late Dallas Theological Seminary Professor Howard Hendricks said that the average person dies between two and seven years after retirement, and it’s because they have lost their purpose in life. For most of them, their purpose was wrapped up in their work. Once their work was done, their life lost its meaning. It’s the difference between retiring from something and retiring to something.
20 FEATURES
They understand that relationships are key.
Mission statements for organizations are common, but how many of us have one for our lives? Knowing your mission has several benefits. One is that it helps you know what to say “no” to. As Al Ells shared, we doom ourselves to finishing poorly when we are “not operating enough out of our ‘sweet spot’ and not guarding over our weaknesses, spending too much time doing things we’re not primarily gifted to do.
FEATURES 21
3
They have discovered their mission in life.
The happiest and most fulfilled people are not in the pursuit of happiness and fulfillment. They are too busy helping others. They are lost in a cause far greater than themselves and that will outlast them. They are busily planting trees under whose shade they will never sit. Or, as psychiatrist Armand Nicholi put it, “The fruit of my work grows on other people’s trees.”
22 FEATURES
4
They are externally focused on helping others.
Howard Hendricks says that we all need three people in our lives: a Paul, a Barnabas, and a Timothy.
The Paul is an older and more seasoned person who can coach us, mentor us, and help us in our walk. The Barnabas is that friend who will look us in the eye and ask the hard questions. This person is one who loves us enough to hold us accountable. And then we need a Timothy, a younger person or persons into whom we are pouring our lives.
Those who finish strong do not center their identity solely in their vocation.
Howard Hendricks said, “There’s a difference between your calling and your career. Your career is what you get paid to do; your calling is what you’re made to do.” We need to be defined by our calling and not by our vocation or career.
Every color of the changing leaves of our lives is beautiful if we embrace them. We must prepare ourselves mentally for the changes of moving from dynamic player to role player to mentoring player to coach to assistant coach to volunteer. Let’s not despise the changes in the seasons of life, but rather seize the opportunity that comes with it.
FEATURES 23
5 They build accountability into their lives.
6 Their work or ministry does not define them.
7 They have prepared themselves for the seasons of life.

Provide Employees the needed Skills and Tools
Over the past decade, many organizations have scaled back on their investment in talent development. As a result, employees and organizations lack the foundational skills to know basic things such as how to run successful meetings, how to work with other people, and how to make the right decisions to create alignment to support the overall strategy.
Leaders must make sure that their teams have the skills and tools to achieve success.
2 Develop Game-Changing Goals
It takes creativity, innovation, and sometimes a lot of extra effort to finish strong.

How to Effectively Lead Teams to Finish Strong
Source: www.advantexe.com
Leaders must make sure that their teams have a strong understanding and clear expectations about the investment of effort that is needed to do a great job. Leaders must also be open and honest in terms of career conversations with people who aren’t going to make it. They need to help them transition out before it becomes a “lose-lose” situation for all.
3 View conflict positively
Another challenge with today’s workforce is an aversion to conflict. It is easy to take the path of least resistance and just come to work without causing a disruption or doing something different, unique, or innovative. In the right environment, conflict can be a natural (and healthy) output of innovation and moving beyond the old way of doing things.
Leaders must create an environment where good and healthy conflict is encouraged to support pushing improvement and a strong finish.
