The Safe Space Act covers all forms of gender-based sexual harassment (GBSH) committed in public spaces, educational or training institutions, workplaces, as well as online. 28-29 September 2023. DPA Quality Health Safety and Environment Manager, Capt.Edgardo Lutao conducted the second batch of the 8-hour Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Training to maintain a safe and healthful workplace across the Chelsea Group. This seminar educates employees on how to detect and prevent hazards in the workplace. A total of 49 employees graced the seminar.

MV Trans-Asia 21 bags First Place as the Cleanest Ship MV Trans-Asia 21, Trans-Asia’s flagship vessel, has been honored with the highest recognition for its exceptional commitment to cleanliness in Category 3 (more than 8 hours travel time) during National Maritime Week 2023. This prestigious recognition was presented on September 29, 2023 at the Cebu Port Authority social hall. Their moment of pride shines even brighter as they reflect on the meticulous inspection that took place on September 12, 2023. MV Trans-Asia 21 underwent a comprehensive assessment by a dedicated and experienced inspection team. This distinguished team consisted of professionals from MARINA, the Bureau of Quarantine, Cebu Port Authority, and other diligent authorities in maritime oversight.

MARINA Rolls out Passenger RoRo Safety Measures SOURCE: PortCalls

18 September 2023. The Maritime Industry Authority has issued precautionary measures and other safety-related concerns in the operation of roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) passenger ships in the domestic trade. MARINA administrator Hernani Fabia said there are 782 maritime accidents recorded from 2018 to 2022. This is in line with the declared policy to enhance the safety of all Ro-Ro passenger ships. MARINA has recorded 115 maritime accidents/incidents last year, of which 90 were considered serious accidents, 13 were very serious, and 12 were less serious. These involved grounding, hull failure, engine failure, steering failure, listing, capsizing, swamping/flooding, sinking, collision, allision, fire/explosion, man overboard, damage to port and structure, heavy weather damage, anchor dragging, and occupational accident. 24

The House of Representatives is eyeing a higher allocation – including tapping confidential and intelligence funds – for the protection and defense of the country’s maritime territory, especially in the West Philippine Sea.

26 September 2023. Under House Bill 8505, Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA’s) corporate term will be extended for another 50 years from its current remaining corporate life of 19 years. The extension will enable BCDA to continue its mandate of helping beef up the AFP by supporting its modernization efforts. The bill also seeks to increase the BCDA’s authorized capital to P400 billion from P100 billion.

While large retailers benefit from reduced shipping costs, ship operators are wrestling with unprofitable voyages and the challenges of oversupply. Looking ahead, the shipping industry anticipates more challenges as an influx of new box ships is expected over the next year while container trade demand fails. Liners are reevaluating capacity management strategies, including the demolition of older vessels, long-term blanked sailings, and delaying new constructions to adapt the distressed market.

October 4, 2023. Ships are increasingly transitioning to fuels such as methanol, ammonia, or liquefied natural gas. At the same time, requirements are continuously tightened for the maritime industry to reduce and, not least, document the emissions of harmful gases and particles. In the future, shipping will be much greener. Instead of using fossil fuels, container ships and other types of vessels will run on new fuels such as methanol, ammonia, and biogas. In addition, shipping companies are subject to requirements for documenting their emissions of, among other things, methane gas and sulfur particles from their ships, increasing the need for advanced measuring equipment.

18 October 2023. The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) joined the country in celebrating the Philippines’ feat as the “Best Cruise Destination in Asia 2023” from the latest World Cruise awards. In a bid to further provide safer and more convenient maritime transportation experience to tourists aboard cruise vessels, PPA has initiated and continuously conducts improvements of its port facilities including the construction of dedicated ports for cruise tourism. On 25 September 2023 during the celebration of World Tourism Day, PPA launched its #PPAsyalTayo campaign to better promote the country’s well-known tourist destinations that can be reached via ports under the jurisdiction of the agency, promoting delicious food, places to visit, and activities to experience in tourist sites accessible via seaports.
