LETTER FROM OUR PASTORS

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, We are excited to welcome you to Capitol Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church!

As a church, we want to ensure that every believer who gathers in these sacred walls will regularly engage in our five Core Commitments (see page 3) that include Service. While corporate worship is vitally important to the church, it does not represent the sum total of what we are called to be as the body of Christ. God gave us many opportunities to be about DOING that work during 2024. The Lord has enabled us to continue to serve Him by serving others. From offering counseling services, feeding the homeless, visiting the incarcerated, nutrition classes, health coaching, as well as ministering to our community through hundreds of acts of kindness, we have sought to make the lives of those we serve better. I believe that our congregation's spirit of service and excellence resulted in Capitol Hill being voted by our community as Washington D.C.’s 2022 “Best House of Worship” in the annual poll by Washington City Paper. Praise God!

In 2025, we are called to embrace the profound mission of being a beacon of light within our communities, reflecting God’s boundless love and unwavering truth. Our theme, "Shining The Light", based on the words of our Lord in Matthew 5:16, invites us to delve deeply into the glory of God that resides within each of us, as we recognize and activate our unique spiritual gifts.

As we embark on this transformative journey together, let this theme serve as our guiding star, inspiring us to immerse ourselves in the divine presence of God. Through this illumination, we can create a significant impact in the lives of those around us, fostering change and hope in our community and beyond.

Therefore, we are inviting every member of CHC to unite in this mission. It is our desire to continue encouraging each individual within this community of faith to maximize their gifts, skills, and talents in service- making "Shining The Light" a powerful beacon for a year brimming with purpose, connection, and the radiant expression of God’s love. Together, let us shine brightly, illuminating the path for others to follow.

Yours in Christ,

Our Core Commitments

By God’s grace, I commit to represent our Master by CHOOSING to participate in EACH OF THESE 5 CORE COMMITMENT AREAS at least once a week:

WORSHIP — Attend a minimum of one corporate worship event at your place of worship.

CONNECT — Seek out a space of time for positive interaction with another believer in a meaningful fellowship opportunity.

GROW — Attend at least one service, class, or group to aid in your spiritual education and development.

SERVE — Share your God-given talent or time in an activity sponsored by the church and/or community with the express intent to help someone else at least once each week.

GIVE — Commit to a lifestyle of faithful giving to the Lord by returning a tithe (10%) and a minimum of 3%–5% for freewill offerings that assists in the support of the local ministries and operations of our church.

In God’s church, there are opportunities for everyone to serve

In fact, this is exactly God’s plan. Everyone receives certain gifts for service, and collectively, we are able to accomplish together the work God calls us to do. Here at Capitol Hill, we take seriously our God-given responsibility to use our gifts to the glory of God in very creative yet meaningful ways. We challenge you to find a place/s where you can best use your gifts in service at Capitol Hill and become part of the means that God uses to change our world.

Because here at Capitol Hill, “We are moving from membership to discipleship!”

As followers of Jesus Christ, we have been called to serve in our community. It is through the blessings we have received that we are to be a blessing to those in need of a touch from God. Wherever we go in the DMV to pack and serve food, distribute clothes or visit the shut-in, we are taking the gospel of Jesus Christ with us and these simple kindnesses still proclaim Jesus Christ lives through us. Activities include quarterly Acts of Kindness Days, MLK Day of Service, Thanks-Giving Baskets.
