LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni and Friends, It has been the greatest honor of my life to lead a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Joseph and to serve at this extraordinary institution of higher education. For decades, I have been blessed to witness how your loyalty and generosity have transformed Chestnut Hill College–our campus, programs, fiscal sustainability, student body, and our global impact. With all our transformations, commitment to the mission was uppermost in our minds. I can assure you the mission is more intensely alive in this College Community than ever before.

For thirty years, it has been YOU–our board, alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, and students–who made it possible for us to live this mission more fully. Last fiscal year, you showed us that support, commitment, and generosity by contributing more than $10 million–an amount that has exceeded those of every year before it! This included the success of the 12th Annual Scholarship Gala and Baiada Scholarship Challenge–with a record number of participants, sponsorships, and money raised.

Because of you and your support, we continue to give students in need the opportunity for a Chestnut Hill College education and experience. We are implementing innovative and targeted programs that prepare our students to respond to the challenges of our times. This in cludes a commitment to bridge the gap between opportunity and achievement by providing education for children in low-income communities, services for young adults on the autism spectrum, and a vision that offers programs spanning the gap from infancy to advanced age. Likewise, conscious of the importance of the living/learning environment, we continue to build a campus where relationships can flourish, and ideas are nourished into fruition.

I am incredibly proud of what we achieved this past year and am so grateful to all of you who have made it possible.

As I finish my final year as president, thank you for joining us in our many efforts to ensure the future of this singular and resilient institution, a treasure to her alumni, to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, and to me.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear Alumni and Friends, From where I sit, the best part of serving Chestnut Hill College is undoubtedly the opportunity to impart our collective gratitude to the College community. This is a community that believes in our institution’s ideals and has come to find a sense of family within its walls. A day rarely goes by that I don’t speak with someone who is in the process of donating their time, energy, enthusiasm, skills and/or financial support to our beloved College.

Over the past year and a half, like a family, we have shown up for one another in unprecedented ways, despite the challenges of not being able to gather in person. Across more phone calls and Zoom meetings than we can count, every member of our community has enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to partner with the College in moving our mission forward in the midst of hardship. As the Sisters of Saint Joseph have taught by example, you have gone where you were called to do service for others.

It is your generosity that has enabled many of our students–some struggling in profound ways, both financial and emotional as the pandemic has dragged on–to continue with their educations.You have bolstered the spirits of the administration, faculty and students alike, and done no less than expand the spirit of Chestnut Hill College and the Sisters of Saint Joseph well beyond the stone walls along the Wissahickon.

A record-breaking fundraising year, in the midst of a global pandemic, is cause for reflection. What is most important-far more important than beating records–is the strengthened connection between our hearts. It has been miraculous to me that, despite our remote world, there has been a genuine outpouring of love for Chestnut Hill College throughout the past year. I hope that you too have felt the love and prayers that have been directed your way.

It is this sense of connection and energy that gives us the needed momentum to continue in our efforts to innovate programmatically and to build new pathways that will enable us to reach more students, while generating needed revenue for the College’s ambitions on our community’s behalf.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph have taught us all to look forward; to create a vision for a better world. Sister Carol, as she not only approaches her final year as president of the College but will likely come to represent the last Sister to be president of the College, embodies this tradition fully. So too have all of you through your generosity. Through the coming year, we will honor Sister Carol together while celebrating what the future holds for Chestnut Hill College. Together, we will take up the mantle. We look forward to seeing you at some of the events that we have planned for the year ahead to honor Sister’s incredible legacy and to thank you all for sharing in our collective vision.

REVOLUTIONIZING LIBERAL ARTS’ APPROACH TO HIGHER EDUCATION THROUGH PHILANTHROPY Chestnut Hill College Secures Its First-Ever Million-Dollar Matching Gift Consider this paradox: when Chestnut Hill College

made the decision, piloted by Sister Carol, 15 years ago to purchase the adjacent Sugar Loaf estate it was the ultimate manifestation of her commitment to risk as a lever for progress. The property was necessary if the College was to continue to fulfill its mission and commitment to students, current and future. Leadership went so far as to name its acquisition the College’s destiny and they found a way, with support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, friends, and alumni, to buy it.Yet, in many ways, the vast potential of the 32-acre estate lies dormant. The College has utilized the space to the best of its ability; however, the narrow traffic egress to the property has constrained its use.

No longer.

Thanks to a transformative $1 million matching gift from Michael Gerard and Margaret Carney McCaffery ’77, together with the staggering response of the other alumni and friends who matched it in less than five months, the promise of the SugarLoaf campus will be unleashed—and it will bring along with it not just Chestnut Hill College’s future student body, but the community at large. The College regularly punches above its weight in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship, but the vision for this venture is particularly revolutionary, and will enable the College to address society’s opportunity and achievement gaps; tackle critical community needs not being sufficiently met; create programs that benefit the wellbeing of 10 G I V I N G B AC K TO M OV E F O R WA R D

the overall community; and help individuals lead meaningful, successful lives—all while providing students with visceral, hands-on experiences and training that will lead to fulfilling vocations and an enhanced quality of life.

It begins with the crucial task of building a safe and welcoming entrance, which the McCafferys have helped make possible with their rallying cry (the McCafferys have previously made significant gifts to catalyze the College’s H.O.P.E. Scholarship fund and a series of critical renovations). “ This is the future of Chestnut Hill College,” says Margaret McCaffery of the SugarLoaf plans. “It’s going to be this dynamic place that energizes the whole campus, and it was our intention that structuring our gift as a match would spark that energizing force now by inspiring other alumni to get involved.

So many of those who stepped up are giving to the College at a leadership level for the first time.”

It is this response from alumni that has made the matching gift such an unambiguous success. Nearly 30 alumni were inspired to make their largest gift to date, and many were new donors to the Fleur de Lis Society, which is the College’s leadership-level giving society.

The new entrance to the SugarLoaf campus will fulfill Sister Carol’s intention to shape a vibrant and sustainable second century for the College. It will not only create a literal gateway to an expanded academic footprint and unprecedented community engagement but will honor her legacy as she prepares to retire. Sister Carol is one of the nation’s longest serving and most accomplished college presidents.

“I think one of the College community’s basic assumptions, and certainly mine, is that the College is what it is today because of Sister Carol’s progressive, steady and masterful leadership,” says Margaret.

“While we certainly wanted to make a gift that would significantly secure the future of the College, we also wanted to show our respect and admiration for Sister Carol and what she’s accomplished over the past three decades.”

With the new entrance in place, Chestnut Hill College will launch at SugarLoaf “The Wellness Collaborative,” which is the umbrella under which initiatives like the College’s Montessori CHIME Program and the Neurodiversity Life Skills Through Career Program will take shape. In addition to improving the financial viability of the College and diversifying its revenue streams, these programs will build a new business model that could revolutionize higher education for small Liberal Arts institutions.

Also planned are programs that address critical community needs using mission-based solutions informed by the depth and knowledge of the College’s faculty. “ We are enormously grateful for the generosity that is the catalyzing force bringing our SugarLoaf vision to life,” says Sister Carol. “The outpouring of support from the McCafferys and those who have followed their lead has made this a recordbreaking year for fundraising at the College.

There is tremendous work and opportunity ahead–all of it central to our mission. We thank our alumni and friends for their deep commitment and partnership.”

Chestnut Hill College’s alumni have a unique love for the College and, as it prepares to celebrate 100 years, they recognize a responsibility to continue working creatively to ensure its future. The community’s response to this matching gift opportunity and to the vision of an emboldened SugarLoaf embody that commitment fully. As we experience a collective sense of energy and renewal as our community comes together in person this year, we remain grateful to our alumni, who are the true visionaries driving our mission forward.

On May 13, 2021, we marked a momentous event in the life of the College: for the first time, every class year—from 1949 to 2021—was represented at the 12th Annual Scholarship Gala. Together, alumni and friends of the College raised more for student scholarships than ever before and more sponsors joined us for the Scholarship Gala than at any fundraising event in the College’s history.

The pandemic has no doubt underscored our community’s interdependence and, thanks to the generosity of our honorees, Ann and Mark Baiada, and 550 Griffins and friends, more than $546,000 was raised for scholarships at a time when many students have need of the support more than ever, with the pandemic’s aftershocks presenting many families with complex challenges and hardships. And this represents more of them than one might realize.

Nearly every student at Chestnut Hill College receives some form of financial assistance; more than $17.8 million in scholarships was awarded last year alone.

Student scholarships are an essential aspect of the Griffin experience not only to those who benefit directly from them, but as part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing a campus environment marked by a values-based education and commitment to the Dear Neighbor. We believe our students learn as much from one another as they do their professors, but this doesn’t happen in a meaningful way without students of myriad backgrounds—which in turn doesn’t happen without scholarships. A robust scholarship program is essential to maintaining fidelity to who we are and always have been.

“ Our family has a motto that is one of the driving forces behind our lives and choices,” say Ann and Mark Baiada of their decision to challenge the community with a generous matching gift. “Of the three pillars, ‘Think big, Mark and Ann Baiada work hard, show love,’ showing love was represented so beautifully by the entire community and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the result.”

Alumni at Chestnut Hill College know what it means to show love, and this year’s fundraiser put that on full display in a soaring success with the Baiada Scholarship Challenge. For weeks before the 12th Annual Vital Scholarship Gala, alumni answered the call of the Baiada Scholarship Challenge, a $100,000 matching gift challenge from Ann and Mark Baiada. Dedicated alumni volunteers took up the mantle of Team Captain, rallied classmates, formed teams, and contacted hundreds of classmates and friends, urging them to join the Challenge.

By the end of the night on May 13th, 32 teams had raised over $256,000 for student scholarships, smashing the original $100,000 goal.

“It was incredibly special to see this many alumni and friends of CHC come together to support our students

at this unprecedented level,” said Erin Wooley,Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “We are deeply grateful to each and every one of you for the hard work and dedication it took to make this amazing accomplishment possible.

We are also very grateful to the Baiadas for agreeing to be honorees for a virtual event for their generous support.”

FOR THESE LONGTIME DONORS, GIVING BACK IS THEIR ENDURING LEGACY

When Harry and Joan Bellwoar decided

to commit themselves to charitable giving, it turned into more than a personal decision, it became a family tradition.

“They were good role models,” said Andrew Bellwoar, one of the Bellwoars’ seven children and now a lawyer in West Chester. “They understood the needs of the world and tried to respond to that.”

Harry and Joan were married for 62 years when the couple passed away in 2019 within five months of each other. Throughout their lives, Harry and Joan Bellwoar were extremely generous to several organizations, with Chestnut Hill College as the primary recipient. Joan, a former teacher at Archbishop Prendergast High School and Merion Mercy Academy, felt particularly strongly about the College because a scholarship enabled her to earn her degree in 1955, her son shared.

Since 2008, the Keohane/ McDermott/Bellwoar Endowed Scholarship (all family names) has been helping CHC students.

In Joan’s will, she stipulated that “the gifts to CHC shall be for scholarships for needy children or immigrant children who would not be able to attend otherwise. My intent is to Andrew Bellwoar, recognize the fact that I would son of Harry and Joan not have been able to attend the College were it not for scholarship aid.”

Andrew Bellwoar said this was a sentiment that his parents passed along to their children, who also have contributed to the fund. They have touched the lives of many students at Chestnut Hill College, and helped them achieve their dreams.

During the 2020-2021 academic year, student Ahmya Hope ’22 received the family’s scholarship, making it possible for her to earn a CHC degree as she works towards a career in the medical field. “ Thank you, Mr. Bellwoar, for investing in Chestnut Hill College and me,” Ahmya wrote in her thank you letter to the family. “This gift helped my family and me afford tuition and enables me to have more time to focus on my studies. I am very thankful to have received the Keohane-McDermott-Bellwoar Endowed Scholarship.”

Ahmya dreams of joining the medical community so that she can give back, which would have pleased Harry and Joan, as it aligns nicely with how they raised their own children.

“They very much tried to inculcate in us the idea of giving back…They were very attuned to the idea that there are others who need your help in the world, and to make sure that we respond to that,” he shared.

“For example, when you’d say, ‘Hey, Mom, what do you want for Christmas?’ She would say, ‘Hey, why don’t you contribute to this fund, or contribute to that charity,” he recalled.

He said his father also incorporated his charitable work into his career as a lawyer. In the 1970s, Harry helped form a Philadelphia non-profit to provide addiction treatment and prevention services. He continued that work well into what many would consider their retirement years.

“He was pretty remarkable in that he was the consummate Philadelphia attorney, but then as he got older and thought about heading toward retirement… he was never going to retire and do nothing,” Andrew Bellwoar said.

In his 60s, Harry wound down his Pennsylvania practice and passed the New Jersey bar–no small feat–so he could work out of their second home in Ocean City.

There, he also became an advocate for children caught in the court system, and “always had an eye on doing something more, which was a great motivator for all of us,” his son said.

Among Andrew’s legal specialties are wills, trusts, and estate administration and as such, he said he wanted to emphasize how easy it is to leave money in one’s will to worthy institutions like Chestnut Hill College–just as his parents had taught him.

In 2020, Andrew reached out to CHC about a generous gift for the family scholarship from the estate of his late mother.

“The gratitude of alumni for scholarships awarded by the College manifests itself in a desire to make certain that those coming after them can have the same good fortune. This is certainly true in the case

of Joan Bellwoar, whose thankfulness for the College’s generosity continued long after graduation and is now evident in the gift of a very significant scholarship.

Supported by her husband, Harry, the Bellwoars are making it possible for those in need of financial assistance to attend the College and, thereby, benefit from the assimilation of its mission and values, which will change their lives and change society for the better.” said Sister Carol Jean Vale, President of Chestnut Hill College, who knew Harry and Joan Bellwoar for many years.

“Why did they do it,” Andrew asked. “I’d like to think that they were generous in spirit, and understood that they had a great life together, and created a great life for themselves and their kids, and felt blessed and wanted to share some of the fruits of their labors with others.”

Since its inception, the Keohane/McDermott/ Bellwoar Endowed Scholarship has awarded more than $35,000 to students. With the addition of Joan’s estate gift, students like Ahmya Hope, who could not afford it otherwise, have the opportunity of a CHC education.

“I take comfort in knowing that I am in good hands,” she wrote in her letter, “as part of the Chestnut Hill College family.”

CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE OFFERS H.O.P.E. FOR ADULT STUDENTS TO COMPLETE THEIR DEGREES

In March 2021, Chestnut Hill College announced

the creation of the “Helping Others by Providing Education” (H.O.P.E.) Scholarship that paves the way for adult learners to overcome financial hardships that have prevented them from completing their college degrees.

The H.O.P.E. Scholarship program, generously funded

by CHC Board Member Margaret McCaffery ’77 and her husband Michael, will provide financial support for qualifying students in the College’s Accelerated Adult Degree Program (AADP) making it possible for them to earn their degree.

“Education has always been extremely important to our family,” Margaret McCaffery said of the scholarship.

“We applaud the commitment that CHC has made to help adults finish their college degrees. Our intention for this scholarship is to enable adult students to return to the College, complete their degree, and experience the confidence and success that comes with it. “ Our hope is that this opportunity will change not only the lives of the recipients, but also will positively impact their families and their community for years to come.”

The AADP program, which administers the new scholarship, has approximately 400 students whose average age is 37. More than 60 percent are students of color and nearly 80 percent are women.

“What makes this program so special is that it targets a student demographic that is often overlooked by other scholarships,” said April Fowlkes, Executive Director, Accelerated Adult Degree Program and SCPS Admissions. “These are individuals who are motivated and hard-working students, many of them very close to completion, yet they simply don’t have the money to return. This literally gives them hope to come back and finish their degree, which can change their lives.”

spring, he became one of the first H.O.P.E. scholars to graduate from the College’s Accelerated Adult Degree Program (AADP) with a degree in Human Services.

“The H.O.P.E. Scholarship was a blessing for me,” said Burton, who was working to earn a bachelor’s degree to maintain a promotion as the Director of Basketball Operations at Belmont Academy Charter School. “With the pandemic, I found myself having a lot of problems financially, and started working another job to support myself. I get emotional talking about it, but the H.O.P.E. Scholarship lifted the financial stress that I was dealing with.”

The H.O.P.E. Scholarship program designates $100,000 a year for three years to adult students who meet its eligibility requirements: Students must have completed more than 75 percent of their course work, or at least 90 credits; qualify for and apply for financial aid in accordance with federal Department of Education FAFSA regulations; have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale; enroll or be enrolled in the College’s AADP program; and complete an online application, secure a letter of recommendation, and write a one-page essay on “How a College Education Will Impact My Life.”

“We are deeply indebted to Margaret and Michael McCaffery for their commitment to help those adult students who are nearly finished to complete their college degree requirements as a means to building a better life for themselves and their families,” said Sister Carol Jean Vale, president of the College. “These students historically have faced considerable financial, academic, and personal difficulties related to their studies, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic, and the H.O.P.E. program will help them make it across the finish line.”

The following letter was written by a scholarship recipient who continues CHC’s long-held tradition of women interested in science and medicine.

Dear Chestnut Hill College Donors, Thank you so much for investing in scholarships at CHC. I am senior who is set to graduate in Spring 2022 with a chemistry degree and hopefully a minor in biology. Because of your generosity, I will be able to complete my degree.

I am originally from Ukraine and immigrated to New Jersey with my family when I was only 6 months old. When I was five, my family moved to Roselle Park, New Jersey where I attended Roselle Park High School all four years.

I first learned about Chestnut Hill College from a college fair hosted by my high school. Chestnut Hill College caught my eye because of the numerous programs being offered. I also enjoyed the idea of a small academic community where I can engage deeply with my instructors and peers.

When I go home over the breaks, I work at a pediatric dentistry where I have been working for the past four years because my goal is to get a head start in Dental School. I know the names of the teeth, their numbers and surfaces. My goal is to go to Dental School but the biggest goal I have is to graduate and prove to myself that I am smart enough to do it.

Receiving a scholarship is of great help to my family and me and makes my parents proud of how well I am doing. We are all honest, hardworking individuals who would like to make a difference. We are first generation immigrants who are working hard to become educated. Education is the key to success and this scholarship makes it possible for me to continue my education. I would like to thank you again for investing in me.
