6TH GRADE ENGLISH

English 6 students finished their study of The Giver and are applying what they learned to design their own utopias Over the next two weeks, students are transforming their brainstorms into founding stories, Constitutions, day-in-the-life blurbs, and persuasive advertisements, while doing their best to explain each choice Their hard work will be displayed on websites to be shared at a Utopia Fair Please ask to see a practice presentation!

6TH GRADE HISTORY

ASK YOUR STUDENT A QUESTION OR TWO ON HOW THE GOVERNMENT WORKS!

History 6 students are completing one-page papers on the structure of the US government by identifying the roles of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the three branches of government The trimester will culminate with an open-notebook test on the Constitution, the early days of Washington’s presidency, the establishment of the treasury, and the heated presidential races between Jefferson and Adams

6TH GRADE MATH

Sixth-grade math students have been learning about ratios and rates. Part of this study includes understanding unit rate and how it can be used to determine the "Better Buy" when shopping. Before Thanksgiving break, students will start exploring percents

Spanish students had a great time singing and understanding a song filled with simple phrases in the present and past tense and in the first and third person Over the next two weeks, they will work on “hay” (there is/ there are) and explore its use in different contexts using the VocesDigital website

Students learned how scientists use careful observation and logical reasoning to draw accurate conclusions We conducted our first mini-lab, where students made detailed drawings, recorded observations, and formulated hypotheses to support their scientific claims.

Students explored the organization of the periodic table They can now identify an element’s atomic number, atomic mass, symbol, and name Looking ahead, students will begin investigating how atoms interact, focusing on valence electrons, ionic and covalent bonds, and the difference between polar and nonpolar bonds.

7TH GRADE ENGLISH

Students familiarized themselves with historical figures such as Joseph Stalin, Karl Marx, and Leon Trotsky as they began their reading of Orwell's allegory, Animal Farm. After making practice games to help solidify the major characters and their real-world counterparts, students show what they know through quizzes and character-driven diary entries

7TH GRADE HISTORY

Students are closing out their study of the Election of 1876 with a short opinion paper detailing who they thought should have won the election by using key pieces of evidence discussed in class. Next, a discussion of the establishment of Jim Crow laws across the South will take place before exploring the Panic of 1907, the establishment of the Federal Reserve, and what life was like for average American in the year 1915.

Students in Math 7 are finishing up a unit on rational numbers. After mastering operations with positive and negative fractions and decimals, they will start a unit on surface area and volume Using cardboard boxes, students will create their favorite animal from Animal Farm and determine its volume and surface area

Our 8th-grade students are currently studying Algebra 1 and Geometry Each class is completing regular unit tests, IXL challenges, and independent projects.

8TH GRADE ENGLISH

8th graders completed multiple mini essays to prepare for high school applications, and they began to build a writing portfolio. They read the Harvard Lampoon’s parody, The Hunger Pains, and studied vocabulary associated with satire. As they work their way through a paragraph writing bootcamp, students are studying a variety of genres through short stories. Their understanding of satire and their writing skills will be assessed as we study Orwell’s Animal Farm this month
