Super Bowl 58 Game Coverage and the Commercials

Last Sunday was a very big day in America; the Super Bowl The season was filled with exciting events From the rise of Joe Flacco to Taylor Swift and her army taking over Kansas City, a lot happened.

The final score of the game was 25 - 22. The Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five years This now makes them a “dynasty”. Although many people do not want to believe it, Patrick Mahomes is very close to being a Hall of Fame quarterback. He is still young and has accomplished incredible feats. Both teams have amazing players The Chiefs have Chris Jones, Travis Kelce, and Patrick Mahomes The 49ers have Christian McCaffery, Fred Warner, and Trent Williams. Two great offenses and two great defenses.

The game started off with an 18 yard pass to Kyle Juszczyk If you read one of the past Hawk Weekly’s, he was chosen as the best fullback in the NFL. The 49ers were driving down the field when Christian McCaffery fumbled the ball and the Chiefs recovered it. CMC has only fumbled 12 times in his seven

year career. When the Chiefs recovered the ball, they made the same mistake the 49ers did.

Isaiah Pacheco actually fumbled 2 times on that drive. The first time it landed in Chiefs’ hands but the second time it didn't

Next, the 49ers got the ball and followed up with an 18 yard pass. They drove down the field and managed to get to the Chiefs’ 20 yard line. Brock Purdy threw it to Juan Jennings who then threw it to Christian McCaffery who ran into the end zone for a touchdown Juan Jennings was actually a high school quarterback, so making the difficult throw was easy.

The Chiefs got the ball back. Mahomes avoided Nick Bosa and threw a cross-body pass to Justin Watson for a gain of 21 yards The Chiefs got to around San Francisco’s 25 yard line. They threw it to Rashee Rice who got the first down. They decided to kick the field goal. There was a minute left before halftime.

This year's halftime performance was done by eight time grammy winner, Usher. Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Lil Jon, Ludacris, Will.i.am, and Jermaine Dupri assisted him in the performance. There were a total of 14 songs played It was rated “a solid” halftime show

continued from previous page

The Chiefs got the ball back at the start of the second half. Mahomes tried to throw to Marquez Valdes-Scantling but it was intercepted by the 49ers Although San Francisco intercepted it, they were unable to convert it to any points. A few drives later, the Chiefs set up to punt. They hit the ball away, but the ball hit the back of one of San Francisco’s players It bounced into Kansas City’s hands They got the ball at the 16 yard line. The first play of the drive was a touchdown to Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

The 49ers got the ball back and got a 17 yard pass to Juan Jennings This triggered the 49ers drive down the field. Brock Purdy found Brandon Aiyuk in the middle of the field for a gain of 20 yards. The 49ers were very close to scoring as they were on the Chiefs 10 yard line The Chiefs sent a heavy blitz on Purdy so he quickly threw it to Juan Jennings for the touchdown. To go up 17 - 13 all the 49ers needed was an extra point. Jake Moody set up to kick, but it was too low and it got blocked This play was very important later on

In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs were down 19 - 16 and needed a field goal to bring it to overtime.

Mahomes found Kelce who would go 22 yards down the field The Chiefs kicked the field goal to send it to overtime Although it was a team effort, if Jake Moody made the earlier kick, the 49ers would be Super Bowl 58 champions.

The 49ers won the coin toss in overtime, but elected to go first Many questioned this decision. Some of the 49ers players were not taught the rules of overtime. They thought whoever scored first won the game. That is not how it works. Both teams have an opportunity to score Typically, you would want to go second You would be playing fourth down football, not third down football.

Brock Purdy was under pressure and dumped it off to Christian McCaffery for a big gain of yards A few plays later, Brock Purdy scrambled and threw it to Kyle Juszczyk for a gain of 13 yards. The turning point of the game was on 3rd and 4, the 49ers in the red zone. They decided not to block the Chiefs best defensive player, Chris Jones Brock Purdy was about to be sacked so he threw the ball away. If they blocked Chris Jones, he would have seen a wide open Brandon Aiyuk in the middle of the field. They kicked the field goal and went up 22 - 19. They had to stop the Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs drove down the field Patrick Mahomes ran a lot in OT In the full game, he ran for 66 yards. The Chiefs were in the red zone, ready to score. Mahomes ran to his right and threw it to Mecole Hardman for the touchdown. The Chiefs won 25 - 22.

Brock Purdy passed for 255 yards and one touchdown while Mahomes passed for 333 yards with two touchdowns and an interception Patrick Mahomes led the team with 66 rushing yards but Christian McCaffery had 80 He also had 80 receiving yards Travis Kelce led the game with 93 receiving yards. Arik Armstead had one sack, and the only interception of the game was caught by Ji’Ayir Brown. In all statistics, the Chiefs led in pretty much everything. There were a combined 7 field goals which added up to 23 points. Jake Moody broke the Super Bowl field goal yard record, but Harrison Butker broke his record later in the game.

COMMERCIALS

Along with the Chiefs dominating the 49ers, there were so many amazing commercials to watch Many of these commercials included fast food advertisements, movie trailers, and the unforgettable Agent State Farm 60 second film.

The Hawk Weekly conducted a poll on what the best commercial was during this year’s broadcast For a 30 second ad spot, the cost was seven million dollars This does not even count the cost of making the commercial or paying the celebrity. This made for a lot of good commercials this year. Before we get to the best voted commercial, let's appreciate the commercials that did well, but not as well as the best.

One of the best voted commercials was the Dunkin’ Donuts commercial starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Jennifer Lopez Matt Damon’s persona in the ad was refreshing and enjoyable The Boston accents were also fun to hear and reminiscent of Good Will Hunting

Another amazing commercial was the CeraVe (Not Michael Cera) commercial. The humor and wit made it a strong contender. Another favorite was the trailer for Despicable Me 4. It certainly got many excited to see the film. The commercial that came in second was the Door Dash commercial with all of the promo codes.

The best voted commercial this year was: AGENT STATE FARM! The commercial starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and ended with Danny DeVito, thus reuniting the duo from Twins. This year’s commercials did not disappoint!

Mathcounts and Scripps Spelling Bee Results!

The recent Mathcounts and Spelling Bee competition happened recently; here's what we know

Recently, this year's Mathcounts team participated in the local chapter competition This year's official Mathcounts roster included Benjamin Chu, Michael Sebastian, Wynn (John) Waterstredt and Douglas Swett Other individuals that went to the competition included Mashari Perry, Yamilet Merchan, Julissa Urgilez, and Stella Fortes

Our Mathcounts coach, Brian Lariviere, teaches eighth grade math and robotics. This is his second year coaching the CDS Mathcounts team, and the third year CDS has had a Mathcounts team While there was a Mathcounts team last year, prior to that, it had been over ten years since CDS had competed Right now CDS is still a beginner Mathcounts team, but everyone is doing their best to make sure that CDS keeps going strong with its Mathcounts performance

Students arrived at Montville High School at 8:30am and left at 2:30pm The students participated in three rounds of math testing, the first two rounds as individuals, and the last round was as a team Questions ranged from geometry problems, to PreAlgebra, to simple problems, and complex riddles. After all the math testing was finished, the tests were scored and the top ten winners competed in a countdown round in which they had to solve the questions faster than another person to win. Winners came from Newark Academy, Milburn MS, and one from Chatham Middle School. In addition, all the volunteers running the event were cadets in the army training to be part of the engineering section of the army.

The preliminary Scripps Spelling Bee also occurred recently with students receiving study sheets and going through various practice rounds. Finally, each class from 1st grade to 8th grade went through an elimination round to send the top two students from each class to participate in front of the school Unfortunately no first or second graders went up to the stage to compete, only third to eighth graders made it to the finals After a few rounds, the level of difficulty of the words grew increasingly harder Finally, Mia Bjorkedal won the CDS Spelling Bee and she now gets the opportunity to go to the regional Scripps Spelling Bee Since then, Mia has qualified for the Diamond City Regional Spelling Bee on March 10 in Pennsylvania Good luck, Mia!

Model UN: CDS 8th Graders

Shine at Drew University

After much preparation and practice, CDS students participated in the first ever Model UN conference for the school. Preparation started back in January. One of the first steps involved writing position papers in which Mashari, E, and Julissa wound up winning an award for their work. After this step, students wrote and gathered key information about their country and committee Once finished, all information was used in a practice presentations and opening statement rehearsals. Afterwards, all final pieces of writing were printed out and the students were ready to head to Drew University.

On February 2, students visited Drew University for the conference Aside from CDS, there were 10 other schools representing other countries in different committees. Although it was rather intimidating at first, with words of encouragement from Mr.Bromstedt, CDS students rose to the challenge. Prior to being placed with other countries and committees to discuss resolutions, students were instructed to go to one of Drew University's halls There, a brief explanation of what would happen in each room was given, and students had the chance to hear an alumni speak about his experience in Model UN at Drew University.

Students were split up between two different buildings. In each building, there were separate rooms for each committee: Space Race, Arms Proliferation, and Climate Change In Mead Hall, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Korea met together to design a resolution, and these meetings lasted for over two hours.

At the end of all of the committee meetings, awards were given out. Brazil (Oliver, Sekario, and Caleb) won most outstanding delegate for the Climate Change Committee. China (Andrew, Anthony, and Trevor) also won best delegation As mentioned earlier, Canada also won the best position paper award.

You may be wondering what it was like for a student in the meeting room. Well, we interviewed a member of China, Anthony Gentile He described the meeting as nerve racking because it was his first time, but he quickly learned that it was most people's first time. He believes his group did very well, and he was very happy to win an award We wish future Model UN teams good luck!

Words of advice from a Regional Geography Bee Winner

Geography Bee scheduled for April 13th

With the Geography Bee coming up many people want to participate and hopefully make it to nationals/regionals For those interested in participating in this competition, the first thing to know is that it is very difficult to make it into the regionals. However, I was able to make it into the regionals of the Geography Bee, and I am here to offer some advice for those interested in preparing for the event.

1

The first thing I recommend is playing geography games Geography games are very important because they provide knowledge for things you need to know like state and country capitals, rivers and mountains, and overall locations for these places. Seterra, Call of War, and Geoguessr are some I would recommend. You must study and memorize the answers.

2 The final recommendation is to try not to stress. When you arrive at the competition, look around the room and remind yourself that you are just as prepared as everyone else in the room Listen to the questions carefully and hit the buzzer immediately after the question ends. Getting or making a practice buzzer is also a possibility.

The second thing I recommend is watching YouTube videos that quiz you as you watch These are helpful because they ask you questions that helped me during the Geography Bee For example, I received a question about Lithuania during the event that was asked of me when I watched the preparation YouTube videos. To find helpful videos, go to YouTube and search for Geography Quiz in the search bar. Always choose the hard difficulty level.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing you at the competition!

CDS Students See The Mayhem Poets

On January 31, the Upper School CDS students went to see the Mayhem Poets perform at the Mayo Center

CDS upper school students went to the Mayo Performing Arts Center on January 31 to see The Mayhem Poets. Overall, I thought they were okay. Some parts were funny, but parts were less amusing. I asked a few students what they thought about them.

First, I interviewed Wynn Waterstredt

What did you think about the performance? It was a fun and interesting take on poetry, and they made it much more entertaining than other poetry I've seen.

What was your favorite part of the show? My favorite part was when they made poems using the word suggestion on their phones.

Next, I interviewed Mashari Perry, Julissa Urgilez, and Stella Fortes.

What did you guys think about the performance? It was put together really well and it was entertaining to watch

What was your favorite part of the show? Probably the part when they brought up the kids and their phones and they made poetry.

Lastly, I interviewed Asher Lowenberger

What do you think they could work on in their performance? They are pretty good performers but the content of the show they could work on.

Overall, the show got a solid response from the students It’s a good show to get middle school students interested in poetry

What to See: Top 5 Broadway Shows You Should See Soon!

5. Back to the Future

The hit movie comes to Broadway in an incredible production. Marty McFly’s life is okay. His whole family, except him, is occupied with losers. One night, he accidentally goes back in time and now has to get his parents together, or else he won’t exist. This show is one of Broadway's best right now. I highly recommend it.

4. Sweeney Todd

After 15 long years, Sweeney Todd, a barber, finally escapes jail after being wrongly convicted of murder He teams up with a baker named Mrs Lovett and together, they kill and bake people into a pie The show is a fun mixture of gore, terror, and little birdies. If you like horror movies, you’ll love this.

3. The Who’s Tommy

If you like the band “The Who,” you’ll love this musical. After witnessing his father kill a man, four-year-old Tommy retreats into catatonia. He is further injured by abuse from relatives and from numerous medical attempts by his parents to cure him By accident, Tommy finds his voice through his uncanny ability to play

pinball The show is based on the album of the same name. The show got amazing reviews in Chicago. This is a show you have to see.

2. Little Shop of Horrors Off-Broadway

This is not on Broadway but it is so good that it deserves to be on this list. This offBroadway revival follows Seymour Krelbourn, an orphan who works as a florist One day, he stumbles upon a plant that has an unusual taste for human flesh and blood Seymour has to feed the plant until it grows really large and has to start eating full people

1. Monty Python’s Spamalot

Ripped off from the film classic, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot has everything that makes a great knight at the theater: from flying cows to killer rabbits, British royalty to French taunters, dancing girls, and of course, a shrubbery. The show follows King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they search for the holy grail because God told them to. I think the show is a love letter to comedy and it is very good

CBFL UPDATE: Season 2 Update

So far, there have been two games this season and it is a hit. In the first game of the regular season, Trevor’s team played Owen’s team in a game that started uneventfully. The game started with both teams getting the first down then could not reach the end zone alongside a couple of punts by Owen’s team.

One of Owen's punts went down to the one-yard line, then the next play was a safety leading Trevor’s team to punt Next, Andrew threw an interception to Sekario to give Trevor’s team good positioning. This resulted in a touchdown caught by Ryan.

In game two, it was a faceoff between Oliver's team and Owen’s team. It started with both teams making a turnover. Then, Oliver's team went down and scored, then got a turnover and downs and turned that into a touchdown making it 14-0. Team Owen went down and scored a touchdown which was followed by a touchdown from Team Oliver. For

the last two drives, it was a turnover on downs for Team Owen, and as time ran out, Oliver's team took the kneel and finished the game with a final score of 21-7.

In game three it was a matchup of Team Oliver vs Team E; both defenses were on fire which made this game such a lowscoring game. Game three was a rainy game making it very hard to catch as Team Oliver had a total of seven drops this game with four of them by Sochi who could have had three or maybe even four touchdowns in dry conditions The game was kind of weird because as bad as Team Oliver was playing, they still pulled out the win to keep them in first place with a record of 2-0. The final score was Team Oliver 14 to Team E's 0.

In our fourth game of the season, it was Trevor’s team versus E's team in a very uneventful game. In this game, both teams could not do anything. Both teams would get the first down, then just couldn't score. The game also had a couple of INTs and a ton of fourth-down turnovers This game will probably become the most boring game in CBFL history.

SPOTLIGHT

CDS Alums: Andy Covello

Catching up with CDS alumni! What are they doing now?

This year marks Chatham Day School’s 25th anniversary. Many scholars have graduated from CDS and have gone on to do amazing things. For the next few weeks, I am going to show different CDS alumni. They might have graduated last year or even 10 years ago. I had the chance to interview former CDS student and star football player, Andy Covello.

Andy joined Chatham Day School in 2013 when he was in first grade and he graduated in 2021 Some of Andy’s favorite things about CDS are the relationships and bonds he created with the students and teachers. His favorite teacher was Mrs. Gadzi and he also really liked his chess teacher, Mr Henry Although his favorite teacher was Mrs. Gadzi, his favorite class was history with Mr. Murad. Andy played basketball at CDS and he was in several CDS productions.

Andy did not have a buddy class, but he really enjoyed hanging out with the younger students. Mr. Buffum’s son, Oliver, always said that Andy was his role model. Oliver now shows up early to before care to spend time with the younger students, just like Andy did. Andy had two older siblings that attended and graduated CDS (2017 and 2019). He says that he misses all of the teachers at CDS. He says that Chatham Day School helped him grow in his ability to make good relationships. He really enjoyed his eighth grade Frost Valley trip and he was in the house Aurora

Andy is now a Junior at Delbarton and he plays OL for their varsity football team. All of CDS wishes Andy the best of luck in his senior season!
