Coach Tidwell was with her husband, then boyfriend, taking cute couple pictures at Windom Farms; they both looked dashing in matching khaki and white. As they were walking through the woods, a friend called Mrs. Tidwell’s name to distract her. When she turned back around, Mr. Tidwell was on one knee with a ring in his hand, ready to pop the question. Luckily for her, the photographer was able to capture the moment perfectly.

As I’m sure most of you know, Coach Billy Barnett is married to Mrs. Coach Barnett. Coach Billy Barnett had one goal and he was going to do whatever it took to make it happen. He was determined to make his proposal better than her parents’. This was a hard goal because her parents got engaged at (drumroll please) a four way stop. After a long thought on this pressing issue he decided a yardsale she was hosting was the perfect moment. So on that day, he patiently waited for a time when she was alone. When she walked around the house on a break, he decided to make his move. As he got down on one knee, he managed to land right on an unusually large, and sharp pinecone. He still has the scar today.

Dr. Bouldin shocks us all with his touching story: When he first met Sue Bland at Oak Mountain for an event, she had forgotten her pillow. Dr. Bouldin, being the gentlemen he is, lended her his own pillow. The walk to his car must have been a life changing experience: when he got home he told his roommate that he met the woman he was going to marry. After steadily dating (which was rare for him), he planned the proposal. He proposed by placing her ring in silly putty for her to find. How can you say no to that? Admit it, we all love silly putty.

Mrs. Rains proposal as told in her own words: “We were watching Christmas Vacation and Brent got up to go to the kitchen, as he passed by my chair he stopped and grabbed my hand. He had a really weird look on his face and when he touched my hand; his hands were cold and clammy. I knew right then something was up. Are you kidding me- is this really happening? I was thinking oh not right now, I have Cousin Eddie in a black dickie under a white sweater in the background with a moose cup in his hand. I was thinking isn’t this supposed to be on the collar of a new puppy, or in my dessert, or written in the sky by an airplane!? He said he had something else planned but he was worried he would lose the ring so he had to get rid of it! Looking back it was perfect- totally us!”

We all remember that Thomas Jefferson wrote the words that put the world on notice. Our first declaration told everyone worldwide that there was a new kid on the block, with a brand new view of right and wrong. It was the beginning of the American experiment that is outlined in our Declaration of Independence. In 1776 Jefferson wrote: “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” There are currently 27 million men, women, and children that are enslaved around the world. That’s more people than at any other time in recent history. From private homes, to fields, factories, and brothels, millions upon millions of people are living as modern-day slaves under the control of others using them for financial gain. What is slavery? Slavery occurs when one person completely controls another person, using violence or the threat of violence to maintain that control. They exploit them economically, pay them nothing, and they cannot walk away. This is happening today across the world, in 161 countries, including our very own. Slavery is an estimated $32 billion per year industry and there are 14,000 to 17,500 people trafficked into the U.S. annually. According to CNN’s Freedom Project, in 1850, the cost of a slave was around $40,000 in today’s dollars. The average price of a slave today is a mere $90. I think we can all agree modern day slavery is wrong and needs to end. Join us and the rest of people across America by participating in the End It Movement.

What is the End It Movement? The End It Movement was established by Pastor Louis Giglio. The goal is to raise money for organizations so they can help end slavery and to simply offer various ways people can raise awareness, including wearing a red “x” symbol on their clothes or hands. “It’s not any one person or organization that’s going to solve this. Black Lives Matter, Inc. separating promotion from progress

What began months ago with the killing of an unarmed, black male and daily, television news spectacle has gradually manifested online as a subversive, left-wing campaign. It has become a national, celebrity-fed franchise and a source of inflammation for liberals and people of racial distinction. Broadcasted on the backs of NBA stars like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, the initial goal to combat police brutality and magnify the sanctity of black life is suffocating under media hype and the notion of a movement infecting major cities coast-to-coast. The last words of Eric Garner before being choked to death by a New York City police officer is now a statement piece among teens and the socially brazen. Schools are beginning to put a ban on the “I Can’t Breathe” apparel from the threat of violence in the hallways, although its supposed message is peace. Another resounding issue of the mantra is the isolation and elevation of a single race. The victims of these latest acts of assassination were, in fact, African American; but if the true essence of the movement is equal resistance from the savage behavior of law enforcement, the segregated chant, “Black Lives Matter” reveals the cause to be a subjective cry for attention. Now, the opposition to make the phrase “Black Lives Matter” interchangeable with “All Lives Matter” (as some innocent humanitarians have tried to do) might be validated by America’s history in the reign of slavery; flash-forward to present day, though, and there is no shortage of African American success and influence in every aspect from popular culture to politics.

Another factor that contradicts the argument is drug and gang violence. How could a group of people with so much division and animosity blame an outside source for the supercilious and negligent attitude regarding the lives of their people? A study on firearm-related injuries from the American Academy of Pediatrics in people under 20 revealed that 90 percent of those hospitalized were male, but the rate were highest for black children and teenagers. The overall gunfire hospitalization rate for black males was almost 45 percent, 10.5 times higher than the rate for white males. The rate for black teenagers 15 to 19 was 13 times higher than the rate for white teens in the same age group. Gun violence in black communities is rooted in lack of opportunity in the workforce and low, educational funding; this is what makes gangs and drug trafficking so attractive to these youths. In another report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, it was stated that African Americans were victims of 7,999 homicides in 2005 and said that 93 percent were killed by people of the same race. There are about 22 blacks murdered each day by other African Americans.

After examining the backstory in the black community, if we step back for a moment to evaluate the actual products manufactured by the protesting, there is nothing more than a cluster of angry hashtags and an outspoken, new clothing line. Despite the mobs of people flooding city streets and mega malls, there is no pending legislation credited to the movement. The implementation of body cameras worn by some police officers was actually not the doing of protestors, but has been in the works before this latest bout of anti-police rallying. Overlooking any aspect of race or each protestor’s personal reason for involvement, the crusade remains fruitless from seeds of fallacy and impracticality.

It seems as though no matter what time of the year, there is always some kind of sporting event going on to occupy your free time. Cullman High School is known for its vast array of athletic talent. With multiple seniors already signing on to continue their athletics in the college realm, and rising star underclassmen, CHS is stacked in the sports department. Even though the Friday night lights of football season have faded away, the new year brings new sports and fresh faces to the scene. Basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, and tennis are already in full swing, and I’ve talked to some star players from each one. Basketball This years basketball season, has already been a history making one. Between the girls and boys, four players (Brontae Harris, Lawson Schaffer, Seth Swalve, and Baylee Johnson) have earned over 1,000 points. I intervied all-star players Baylee Johnson and Lawson Schaffer for their thoughts on the season so far.

Track 1) I’m looking forward to State, and my favorite memory is winning my last indoor meet.

2) All-area 4x2 high jump, and I won two indoor meets.

1) I’m looking forward to going to state because we go to the beach. 2) State runner up. Twice.

New Faces on Campus the newest members of the bearcat family Kara Jackson, Staff Writer

Cullman High School is ringing in the New Year with several new students and faculty on campus. I was lucky enough to interview these lovely people and ask them some pressing questions that I know you are all simply dying to know. So, without further adieu, here they are, the newest editions of our bearcat family.

-Class of 2017 -She came from Hartselle High School - Her favorite candy is sour patch kids

- Class of 2018 - He came from Escambia High School - His dream vacation would be to travel to California or Colorado

- Class of 2017 - Came from West Point High School - Her last meal would be steak, garlic mashed potatoes, and sweet tea

Mrs. Robin Cook

- 12th grade English - Graduated from Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, UAH in Huntsville, Alabama, and Liberty University Online in Lynchburg, Virginia - She was previously an English teacher at Wallace Community College in Selma - She went to a Cincinnati Reds baseball game on her first date

Tayler Bray

-Class of 2017 -She came from Vinemont High School - She aspires to obtain a degree in nursing

- Theatre - Graduated from Samford University at Beeson Divinity School - His previously owned two businesses and also planted a church - He and his wife went out to eat dinner on their first date, but the most memorable date was a picnic which he prepared at Hurricane Creek Park

In Loving Memory of Stephen Freeman

As you all know by now the senior class has lost another young man. The way Stephen lived his life was truly a blessing for everyone who took time to get to know him. He was by far the most down to earth person to walk the halls of this school. He was truly a wonderful man. Although his death was sudden and unexpected, that’s not the reason behind this article. This article is about the loving person he was. When his name is said it’s hard not to think of his sweet smile and his loving personality. If a person was ever having a bad day and Stephen started to laugh, their day would shift from a bad to a good day. He was truly a blessing to this school.

Mrs. Stansberry Every single moment I have of Stephen Freeman is a good one… I’ve never met any student with such a gentle spirit. Stephen was a very quiet person until he got to know you, then he would crack up laughing and make everyone else laugh too. He was a huge dog lover, and had such a good time with his basset hound, Daisy. Stephen was the kind of guy who wanted to remain anonymous, never called attention to himself and never wanted to be any trouble at all. Others thought he was bashful and shy, which he was, but he had such a fun sense of humor! He was one of those crazy Alabama fans; he had asked his grandmother to get him an Alabama Leather jacket that he was so proud of! I would give him a hard time about it when Auburn beat his favorite team, but he never got mad. Stephen’s presence at CHS is sorely missed.

Mrs. Lay and Mrs. Andrews Stephen Freeman was a kind and gentle young man. He was polite and thoughtful at all times. He was loved by all his classmates and teachers. Stephen was an extremely conscientious student. He had a sweet spirit and a great laugh. Stephen was quiet most of the time but would laugh out loud and that would make others join in with his laughter. He had a basset hound named Daisy that he loved and he and Mrs. Lay would often share stories about their favorite dogs. He loved being outside and also enjoyed playing his video games. Stephen was also a huge Alabama fan. He actually dressed up as an Alabama twin on costume day during homecoming this past October. Stephen always participated in pep rally activities and enjoyed showing his school spirit. Stephen Freeman was an all-around great guy. To know Stephen was to love Stephen. Stephen will be missed by all at CHS. We will remember the friend, classmate, acquaintance, and student.

Stephen was super thoughtful. He drew me a picture of a heart and made a special effort to remember my birthday so he could give me an Alabama shirt and shorts. He was a fantastic listener and although he was quiet, he had a sweet sense of humor. Stephen had a huge heart and touched me greatly.
