“Go! Fight! Win!” This was the chant the students left the football team with after the long week filled with dress- up days, fierce competition, and total craziness that encompasses homecoming week. With the shortened class periods, awesome after school activities, and the blackout dance to top it all off, the week of September 28- October 3, 2014, was sure to be a success. Our center spread and multiple, picture-filled pages will take you through it all: the good, bad, and ugly of this year’s homecoming. Also in this edition, staff writer Dalton Bright will give insight on the Ebola crisis, Laura Addison and Leighanna Langford will dive into the music, movies, and stories hot right now, and you can learn how to create some yummy fall treats and DIY Halloween costumes that can be made with articles in your very own closet. how to create the perfect fall treats Kara Jackson, Staff Writer
Spicy Sriracha Chex Mix Ingredients: 6 cups mixed Chex cereal 1 ½ cups Cheez-Its, or other cheddar-flavored crackers 1 ½ cups pretzels 1 cup peanuts 4 tbsp. unsalted butter ¼ cup Sriracha 2 tbsp. soy sauce 1 tsp. grated ginger (or powdered ginger) 1 tsp. grated garlic (or garlic powder) Instructions: Preheat your oven to 250°F. Mix the Chex, Cheez-Its, pretzels, and peanuts in a large bowl. In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine the butter, Sriracha, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic. Microwave the mixture in 15-second intervals until the butter is melted. Stir to combine. Spread the mixture evenly over a large rimmed baking sheet. Bake for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes, until the Chex Mix is crunchy. Allow to cool. Once cool, store in an airtight container.
Graveyard Taco Dip Ingredients: First layer: 1 can refried beans or refried black beans Second layer: 2 cups sour cream 1 pkg taco seasoning Third layer: 2 avocados, mashed 1 clove garlic, minced 2 Tbsp mayonnaise Fourth layer: 1 cup salsa Fifth layer: 1 bunch scallions (green onions), chopped Directions: In a small bowl, mix the sour cream and taco seasoning. In another small bowl, mix the mashed avocados, minced garlic, and mayonnaise. In a small Pyrex dish or pie plate, layer the beans, sour cream mixture, avocado mixture, and salsa. Sprinkle the scallions on top. Chill at least an hour, or until ready to serve. (The dip can be made a day ahead and kept, covered, in the refrigerator.) To make the tombstones and tree, cut the shapes you want out of 2 large tortillas. Place the cut-out shapes on a parchment paper lined cookie tray and bake at 350 degrees until the tortillas are nice and brown. Put the tombstones and tree in the dip just before serving.

Halloween Bark Ingredients: 1 lb Almond bark or white chocolate melts 1 tbsp Of a variety of halloween food sprinkles 1 cup Pretzels 12 Sandwich cookies, orange and black 1 1/2 cups Candy corn 20 Candy eyeballs Directions: Heat almond bark in the microwve until just melted. Combine all the ingredients (except the almond bark) on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Once the almond bark is melted, pour it over the mixture and let it set up. Then enjoy!
Peanut Butter S’mores Blondies Ingredients: 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter 2 cups brown sugar, preferably dark brown 1/2 cup peanut butter 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups (11.25 ounces or 219 grams) all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 XL-sized Hershey’s milk chocolate bars 1 1/2 cups (7 1/2-ounce jar) marshmallow crème 4-5 whole graham crackers Directions: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 8x8-inch pan and set aside. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar, stirring constantly until smooth. Remove from the heat, and stir in the peanut butter. Allow to cool while combining the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large mixing bowl.Add the eggs to the cooled peanut butter mixture, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and stir to combine. Pour the mixture into the prepared dry ingredients, and stir to create a thick, smooth batter.Divide the dough in half and press half into the prepared pan, spreading evenly to the edges of the pan. Place the graham crackers then the chocolate bars over the dough. Spread the marshmallow crème evenly over the chocolate.Scoop out balls of the remaining dough and flatten completely. Top the marshmallow crème evenly with the flatten dough to cover completely. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the top is golden and the edges are slightly browned. Allow to cool in the pan. Cut into 1-2 inch squares and serve.

Attention subjects of Cullman High School for a new queen has been crowned! Laura Addison was named the 2014 Homecoming queen on October 3 at the big football game at Oliver Woodard Stadium. Along with our dazzling queen stood several representatives from each grade. Three other senior representatives accompanied her, as well as two representatives from the junior, sophomore, and freshman classes. Now, these lovely ladies couldn’t possible represent their school and grades as lovely as they did without the help of their handsome escorts. Therefore, on behalf of Cullman High School, the Hilight would like to thank these beautiful ladies and their wonderful escorts for thier fine job and, of course, a huge congratulations to Laura Addison and Peyton Little our new Queen Miss Laura Addison!

Cullman County Fair Queen Pageant taking home the crown Reilly Masters, Staff Writer
In the Cullman County Fair Pageant eight “princesses” from each school competed for the crown. The girls had some tough competition varying from dancing to the playing the saxophone. Despite the hard competition our very own representative, Josie Oliver, won the talent portion along with the crown.
Questioning the Queen: Q: How was this experience for you? A: A little bit stressful since it fell during homecoming week but it was a lot of fun and worth the hard work. Q: What are your views on world peace? A: I’m not answering that Reilly. Q: How does it feel bringing the crown back to Cullman High School? A: It feels pretty awesome especially since cullman hasnt won since 2010.

“It Was Enchanting to Meet You” two girls, one pop star
Oakleigh White and Kendall Federer, Staff Writer Most people only dream of meeting their favorite celebrity at least once in their lifetime. Forget once. We have been fortunate enough to meet Taylor Swift not once, but twice. The first time was on September 11th, 2009. We were in the 7th grade and ready to enjoy our first concert together. But before we knew it, Kendall had won a contest, and we were on our way to a meet and greet. Taylor was everything we dreamed and more. At the time, we thought we were the biggest fans ever and didn’t think we would ever get another opportunity like this. Little did we know that 5 years later we would be “Swifties” and chosen to take part in two different TOP SECRET events leading up to her New Era.
It’s 4:30 in the afternoon on Friday, August 15th, and I have a missed call from a number in New York City. I immediately listen to it, and I realize that I have missed a call from Taylor Nation, Taylor Swift’s fan website, pertaining to the contest I had entered on Tuesday, August 12th. After what felt like 700 calls back, someone finally answered the phone. I was told I have been chosen as 1 of the 89 people to attend Taylors Worldwide Livestream on August 18th in New York City under one condition: I tell no one, and I have to get myself to New York by Monday. After hours of convincing, Mom and Dad finally agree despite their fear that this is some kind of hoax. So my mom, my grandmother (Mimi), my aunt Ashley, and I load up in my car early Saturday morning and start the 13 hour trek. None of us had been to New York before so we had no idea what to expect. We spent all day Sunday doing the “New York” thing. Finally, it’s Monday, and the time arrives for me to meet at The Millennium Broadway Hotel with the other 88 “Swifties” that are just as anxious as I. We sat and talked for an hour and a half and talk about The Bottom Line
everything Taylor Swift. We walked across the street to ABC studios where the Livestream was shot and prepared to see, hear, and watch our queen do her thing. The first time we saw Taylor, we all went crazy and took in every word she had to say. She released her new single “Shake It Off”, revealed the name of her new album 1989, and watched her new music video with all her fans from around the world. After the Livestream, she informed us that we will have to wait a few minutes for her to do a radio and TV interview, but when she gets done that she has “reserved” a spot for us at pizza place so we can all eat together. So we are loaded on a charter bus and driven to Tribeca. Everyone is speculating and wondering where we are going. We pull up in front of her apartment. Everyone goes crazy, and no one can believe this is actually real life. When we arrive in the lobby of her apartment, we realize that she is welcoming each and every one of us with a personal in- depth conversation before we enter her apartment. I talked to her about Kendall and how this was my first trip to New York. She gives me the history on her apartment building, and then she escorts me into the next room. All the “Swifties” mingle and discuss how amazed we are at her generosity. After Taylor welcomes everyone, we go into her kitchen and watch her eat pizza and then “Shake It Off” comes on the radio. Everyone, including Taylor, flips out and immediately starts dancing and singing like one big happy Taylor Swift family. We literally “danced around the kitchen in the refrigerator light” with Taylor Swift. When the song went off, Taylor said it was time to take Polaroid pictures holding her Grammys, VMA, and CMA’s. Once everyone got his or her turn, it was time to leave. We lined back up and Taylor personally gave each of us a special edition bag with three t-shirts in it, a big hug, and a thank you. We all boarded the bus amazed because no one could actually believe that we had been to Taylor’s apartment. Everyone kept saying
On Wednesday September 24, 2014 I missed a call from an unknown number during fourth period. I called them back, but no one answered. I figured it was just a solicitor. However, when I returned from lunch I had another 2 missed calls from the number. Curious, I called back. This time someone answered. By my surprise, the girl on the other line asked me if my name was Kendall. I said yes and she then told me that her name was Karli and that she was from TaylorSwift.com. Cue my panicking. My parents drove me to Nashville on Sunday, September 28th where we were to meet in a parking lot of a small college’s football field. I stood in line with 88 fellow fans, and you could feel the anticipation growing. We loaded buses, and were told we were going to someone’s house that is willing enough to let 89 strangers in their home so we should be considerate. At this point, we were all confused where we were headed, but not for long. Cheers of excitement erupted when we pulled into Scott and Andrea Swift’s driveway. We ate dinner and were then taken into the living room. We all sat in the floor around this chair that sat front and center. I managed to get a spot pretty close to the front and then it happened. Without warning, Taylor herself walked down the stairs and sat down in the chair. Everyone screamed, and she started laughing and telling us how excited she was to finally meet us all. She told us that she was going to play the new unreleased album 1989 for us, and that it was top secret and that song titles, lyrics, etc.

cannot be shared. She played the first few songs, and we had an intermission after the first half of the album. Taylor left the room for a few minutes. She came back with two trays of cookies and her mom walking behind her carrying her cat, Olivia. Naturally, I started panicking when I saw Olivia. When I looked up from petting the cat, Taylor was walking towards me. She started petting Olivia while I was holding her (I am freaking on the inside), and I somehow managed to start a conversation about cats with her. She asked me if I wanted a cookie, and obviously I said yes. After everyone got a cookie, we all sat back down. This time I sat in the very back by Taylor’s parents, and Taylor played the rest of the album for us. When the album was finished, we all went outside to wait in line to get our individual pictures. When I walked over to her, she hugged me and told me she was so glad to see me, she thought I was adorable, and that she had been looking at my outfit the entire night. Everything I planned to say had vanished into thin air, so I just asked her how she found me. She replied with a casual “Oh, I stalked you on Instagram.” WHAT. I told her how my best friend went to the New York album release, and that I didn’t know until I saw her on the screen, and she thought that was hilarious. She said “Oooooh, awkward.” When we had to take our picture, I held her Grammy, and she hugged me and did a surprise face. I told her thank you and bye, and she said “See you soon.” After everyone was checked by security again, we all got back on the buses to head back to our cars. I truly am grateful for Taylor, all that she does for her fans, and this wonderful opportunity.
New and Noteworthy: Where’s Pomping? floating to victory
Cole Lay, Staff writer This year’s Homecoming was a little different, but it was still a great week. The main difference was the transition from the traditional pomping to the more conventional floats. The floats were stressful, but it also allowed more people to get involved in the weeks leading up to homecoming. Preparation for the floats took well over a week. Each class had a new task: succesfully create a float to be proud of and show off to the student body. The floats also gave the classes that do not like pomping a chance at a crafty creation minus every, tedious square of paper and scratches from chicken wire. As the floats show, the Junior Class went all out on their float, but, in turn, exceeded the boundaries. The judges still liked their float the best, however. The Senior Class went all out as well: creating a huge, pomped- out bus. The floats were not easy to make, but at the end it was well worth all the long hours and weird food selections almost every night. It is safe to say that the floats were all well designed, and every class member should hold his or her head up after displaying such amazing school pride.

Add a mischievous boy, Finn, containing no memory, who believes he comes from the outside world even though the prison is shut off from it and a dissatisfied girl, Claudia, that lives in the outside world where time is forbidden, and everyone is stuck in the seventeenth century. Claudia is in an arranged marriage to a young prince that she despises. Her father is the warden of the mysterious prison. One day, Claudia stumbles upon a possible loophole to her arranged marriage, her father’s key to the prison. The result?... A wild, entertaining, thought provoking tale that delves into the secrets of Incarceron.
This memorable day is known for the assassination of the 35th president, John F. Kennedy. Stephen King concocts a thrilling novel about a time-traveler set on preventing the death of J.F.K. Jake Epping, a high school English teacher, gets roped into walking into a rabbit-hole to be sent back to 1963 by his good friend Al Templeton. There are, Al says, only two conditions to time travel via the rabbit-hole. One, it does not have to be a one-way trip, but when you return, no matter how long you’ve stayed in the past, only two minutes have gone by in the present. Two, each time you go back to the past, there is a reset. It is like a clean slate. It’s the same time as you left before, and everything you did on your previous trip has been erased. A relatively simple task, saving the president, is turned into something much greater. King offers a book chock-full of meditation on loss, free will, necessity, and love, and you better accept it.
Fisher is an amazing author who creates a magical tale that will lead you on an unforgettable tale. Incarceron is the first book of two. The second book, Sapphique, is as fantastic as the first. The Bottom Line

The War on Ebola
the current outbreak of Ebola in Africa Dalton Bright, Staff Writer On Tuesday, September 16th after a meeting conducted by the CDC (Center for Disease Control), President Obama announced a nation-wide statement pertaining to the current outbreak of the Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF/Ebola). Due to the sheer magnitude of destruction to the West African peoples, President Obama has allocated troops, building/medical supplies, and additional field workers to help in the aide of Ebola victims. At the request of the Liberian government, America prepares to establish a “military command center in Liberia to support civilian efforts across the region”. Scott Gottlieb, a previous FDA official who served under President George Bush, has stated that he believes many cases of the Ebola hemorrhagic fever will spread to the United States, and he has also said that he believes that the disease has a possibility of going airborne. Although the death-toll is tremendous (already 2,811 have died in Liberia since the outbreak), the estimated fatalities are expected to rise to 550,000 by January. CDC Director, Tom Frieden stated on Tuesday, 23rd that “cases are currently doubling every 15-20 days in Liberia”. The CDC estimated that 1.4 million people in Liberia and Sierra Lione could contract Ebola by January 20th of 2014. Frieden also explained in his statement that these numbers are not based on sheer projections, but rather based on well-rounded scenarios. Although the death-toll in Liberia and Sierra Lione remain the most drastic, current cases are arising in Nigeria and Senegal. On the topic of increasing infections, Obama stated that “Men and women and children are just sitting, waiting to die right now”. As a rebuttal to his previous comment, Obama confidently declared “This is a daunting task, but here’s what gives us hope. The world knows how to fight this disease. It’s not a mystery. We know the science. We know how to prevent it from spreading. We know how to care for those who contract it. We know that if we take the prosper steps, we can save lives. But we have to act fast.” On top of the present American efforts by President Obama, other U.S citizens are using their abilities to aid in the lives of the Ebola victims. One of the volunteers is Dr. Kent Brantly, a Christian missionary and doctor. He left Texas with his family to arrive in Liberia to serve as a full-time medical missionary. He continued to serve as a doctor through the World Medical Mission, but in late July, Dr. Brantly had been informed that he had contracted the deadly virus. Despite being bed-ridden and terribly ill, Brantly continued serving for the greater cause, and on July 21 was declared “virus free”. Brantly stated “As I lay in my bed in Liberia… getting sicker and weaker each day, I prayed that God would help me to be faithful even in my illness, and I prayed that in my life or in my death, He would be glorified.”
