The Single Life Perfectly Lonely

It’s 4:30 and you’ve just gotten home from school on this Friday the 14th of February. Your friends are taking their girls out and it’s looking like you’re going to be short handed on bros for tonight. But listen up men! Tonight the weekend starts, so you’re going to have to step off that couch and show the world that you’re perfect with being a little lonely.

A Simple Little Kind of Free Keaton Dean, Staff Writer

Top 5 things to do on Valentine’sDay (Single Guy’s Style) There are plenty of things that single guys can do with a weekend to themselves. You’re independent sure, but if you absolutely have to have company , 1. Go out with other single guys. Your true bros. Odds are you’re not the only one sailing the single boat.

4. Hit the gym or run a pick up game with the guys. A little bit of activity is proven to kick start energy for this long night of freedom. Also, possibly you find a certain significant other exersicing her new found independence.

5. What’s better than meeting the reason for your end to perfect lonliness on Valentine’s Day? You’re a well fed, energized, fun seeker, who has had the last thing from a boring afternoon so far. Adding a possible anniversary to this night seems to me like a strikingly intelligent man, thoughtfully killing two doves with one stone.

2. The FIRST place to go is the drive through! It’s going to be a long night so start the afternoon with fuel food. You’re only buying for yourself tonight so do it big boys.

*Valentine’s Day Soundtrack*

1. Perfectly Lonely by John Mayer 2. Free by Zac Brown Band 3. Help Me Lose My Mind by Disclosure 4. Send Me On My Way by Rusted Roots 5. I’m Single by Lil Wayne 6. My Moment by DJ Drama 7. One Week by Barenaked Ladies 8. Pompeii by Bastille 9. Neva End (Remix) by Future 10. You’ll Think of Me by Keith Urban If you go to Taco Bell make sure to get the new grilled stuffed nacho The Bottom Line 4| 2.11.14 | The Hiligt

3. Now while the money’s out and spirits are high, go grab that game you’ve been wanting to buy. Do I hear the mention of an all nighter? If Lebron can’t hit a shot to save his life on 2k14 or if you can’t get your killstreak on Ghosts why not head outside.

All the Single Ladies

If you liked it, then you should have put a ring on it Cassidy Harrison, Staff Writer

To all of my girls out there who are single this Valentine’s Day, keep your chins up! I understand that it’s torture walking from class to class, seeing so many happy couples...but, do not fret! Just because you are single now, does not mean you will be forever. Keep in mind that you are all still very young. You are only in high school (need I remind you that’s only four years of your life). Plus, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being single. Now is a more than perfect time to totally embrace your “singularity.” Don’t be down-in-thedumps this V-Day.There are plenty of activities you can partake in that do not include that of the male species!

Top 5 things to do on Valentine’sDay (Single Ladie’s Style) #1. Have A Netflix Slumber Party!

Spend your afternoon watching all your favorite movies with your main g’s, sappy or not! Nicholas Sparks movies have become quite the rage in the chick flick world. The Notebook and the infamous Last Song are among the more popular picks of the average lovesick teenage girl in America. Even though you are single, you can always pretend you are the one having to choose between Ryan Goseling and James

#4. Do it Betty Crocker Style!

With every holiday in the book comes good food. Being female, we are blessed (most of us) with the wonderful natural talent of cooking. If you are anything like my friends and I, chocolate is your number one boyfriend on the planet. There are millions of easy recipes out there that require no specific skill for those who are not so baking savvy. Pinterest, as always, has many recipes to offer fitting to the occassion such as the classic chocolate covered strawberries or red velvet puppy chow! Whatever you decide, it will be worth the effort.

#5. Girls Night Out!

#2. Crash Your Parent’s Date!

Hop on the third wheel band wagon! This is a great time for your effortless persuasion skills you have worked on for so many years. It might seem like a low act of desperation, but at least you are getting a free dinner! Free meal + Time with your family + Whatever else the rents decide to do = Pure joy for everyone (maybe)!

In my opinion, the finest way to enjoy a single female Valentine’s afternoon is one spent with your favorite bachelorettes. There are plenty of things to do... outside of Cullman, that is. A nice dinner at the Melting Pot would be more than sufficable. Also, Endless Love, a novel written by Scott Spencer will be featured in theatres this Friday! If you want to have a happier outlook on love this year, this might be your route. Sitting at home isn’t always the best thing to do for the lonely soul.

#3. Go Shopping! Valentine’s Day is the

perfect opportunity to splurge on yourself! A shopping spree is every girls favorite thing to do to lighten our spirits. Buying a new dress is always a major confidence booster. Spring is just around the corner! Get the the latest and greatest before it’s all gone! A few staples for your Spring wardrobe might include: Wedges, anything with a floral print, Aviatior sunnies, Light weight cardigans, and of course the classic high waisted shorts. Forever21, Urban Outfitters, and even local thrift stores will have all of these fabulous finds. Best way to cure any bad mood as a girl...cookie dough, it’s always the answer

The Perfect Way to...Break Up How To End It Right Hollie Bennett, Staff Writer

High school love is known as the most magical, fun, and innocent love of all our lives. However, this blissful love often times comes to an end more quickly than most would like. Well, at least more quickly than half of the relationship would like. Let’s talk about breakups. Relationships get old, flings run their course, and that lingering FWB leads to no where. I have searched, polled and channeled to give you the best info on how-to have the perfect breakup.

1. Think it through. Make sure that you are positive that you

want to have weekends free of this significant other and you are perfectly content spending your time being single.

2. Plan it. Though text messaging has revolutionized our gen-

erations’ way of doing relationships, sending “Hey I just don’t think this is going to work out” is not the way to potentially crush a poor soul’s hopes and dreams. Be Sensitive and pick a time, place, and choose your words carefully. Make sure you actually have a conversation. Aimlessly stopping to talk to someone

4. Don’t burn your bridges; you

never know when you might want to revisit the relationship at a later time in life.

3. Make it clean. Do not bring up their past

mistakes or previous arguments. Tell the person that even though they have much to offer, you aren’t interested any longer and it just isn’t what you are looking for right now. Don’t get ugly if they do not understand, put yourself in their shoes.

5. In high school, the inevitable will happen-you will see each other. Acknowledge each other’s presence and say hello, try your very best to not be awkward.

6. After being dumped, it can be difficult to know what to do next. Move on to other things and spend time doing activities you enjoy. It’s high school…not the end of the world!

In A Relationship Girl’s Guide

To being in a relationship on V-Day

Bailey Baker, Staff Writer Listen up ladies. Who says being in a relationship means that you can’t have any fun? Single gals, that’s who. If you’re one of those girl’s that loves to make time to spend with your man, Valentine’s Day is the day for you. Sometimes we are a little clueless when it comes to being romantic because, let’s be honest, that’s the man’s job. But even I will agree that on this one day it takes both of you to make it special. So here are some dos and don’ts of Valentine’s Day if you’re feeling a little stuck. Do: Be sweet all day long. If you’re as hardheaded as I am, holding your tongue can be difficult. But girls this is the day of love, and having an attitude just doesn’t scream “love”. If you two get in disagreements more often than none, showing this one behavioral change can go a long way in your relationship.

Don’t: Hang all over your boyfriend all day. Yes we know you love him, but you can stop. Showing your affection around school is just plain gross, and could get you into some trouble with administration. Better to wait until after school hours to kiss and to hug than to get sent to Dr. B’s office.

Do: Get him a gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive at all. If you’re a crafty kinda girl, then make him something from the heart. If you’re a girl, like me, who tries to craft but can’t seem to figure out how to work the hot glue gun, then maybe buying a gift is the best way to go. All guys are different and what gift works with one guy, may not work with another and that’s okay. He should love his gift, whatever it may be.

Don’t: Leave your single girls hangin’. What would we do without our girlfriends? Even though we got a guy in our life and they don’t doesn’t mean we can’t still talk to them. Make time for your single girls because if this man doesn’t last forever that’s who you will be running to.

Top 5 gifts to give your beau: 1. Tickets to his favorite concert. Whether it be hard rock like Pearl Jam or indy like Of Monsters and Men, he will definitely be picking you as his plus one to this event.

2. A nice Cologne. Sometimes boys will be boys and they just get a little smelly. With this gift you can’t go wrong! Just pick out your favorite scent, and it’s kinda like a gift to you.

3. Clothes. Usually clothes would be a big no-no for a guy. But this year we are seeing a change. From a nice vest to even a pair of Nike socks, he will be thanking you for the rest of the year.

4. Candy. If you two are a newly formed couple then this could quite possibly be your kinda gift. It’s no hassle and cheap for you girls that don’t feel like raking out the cash. Just casually find out his favorite sweet and put it in a cute little bag.

5. A gift card to his favorite store. If you’re a girl who is unsure of just what that perfect gift could be, look no further. Letting him pick out what to buy is easy, leaving you with a flawless gift and no worries.

Do: Go on a date. Usually this is the man’s job to pick the date. But it’s a new year and a new you. Pick out what you want to do and let him know. Go to the movies or stay at home and watch a new DVD. Go out to dinner or stay at home and make him his favorite meal. The possibilities are endless!

The Bottom Line How do I love thee? Let me count the ways... 8 | 2.11.14 | The Hilight

Hopefully these tips are helpful and make V-Day 2014 one to remember!

Guy’s Guide

To being in a relationship on V-Day Sam Black, Staff Writer

Top 8 things to do on V-Day: 1. Take her outside. Go on a hike or a picnic in the park. 2. Re-enact your first date. This let’s her know how happy you are to have met her. 3. Buy her some flowers, but dont skimp. (Cheap flowers = upset girlfriend.) 4. Get her a box of chocolates, because everybody loves chocolate. 5. For any of you artsy people out there paint her a picture or write her a song. 6. Get in the kitchen and make her dinner. Let her sit back and relax while YOU take care of everything. 7. Write her a heartfelt note telling her how much you care about her. 8. Last but certainly not least, just be sure to spend some quality time with her.

Well boys, it’s upon us once again. Valentine’s Day. Depending on what side of the “love coin” you’re on, it can be the best or worst days of the year. But let’s be honest, most guys are a little lost when it comes to impressing your special someone on V-Day. Wether its picking out gifts or planning a date, it can be a bit troublesome. Luckly I have compiled some DO’s and DON’Ts of Valentine’s Day. So, if you’re lucky enough to have a pretty lady by your side then listen up! THE BASIC Dos: 1. Valentine’s Day isn’t just any ordinary day, so don’t treat it like it is. V-Day is a perfect opprotunity to really step up your game and go all-out for your girl.

2. Bigger is not always better when it comes to gifts. This all depends on your girlfriend’s personality. While some girls may love big extravagent gifts, others may just prefer a nice dinner and the chance to spend some time with you.

3. Be sure to cater to HER intrests. Go to places she wants to go to and do things that she wants to do. Just keep in mind that this is her day.

WHAT NOT TO DO: 1. Don’t put your needs above her’s. Treat her special, because she is your girlfriend and should be important to you. (If not, you may want to reevaluate your relationship)

2. Whatever you do, don’t do “guy things.” Most girls don’t really want to sit down and watch the Heat tear it up. 3. Don’t forget about VDay, and DEFINITELY don’t ignore her. The picture above is a PRIME example of what NOT to do. Notice how the guy is completly immersed in his video game, while the girl is starting to get irritated. By the way, if your girlfriend does like to sit down and watch sports with you then she’s a keeper

4. DO NOT forget to give her a present. The Bottom Line 9 | 2.11.14 | The Hilight

Unique Wedding Proposals Virtually anyone’s guide to popping the question Reilly Masters, Staff Writer Valentine’s Day is usually the ideal time for many guys to pop the question, or to at least start thinking about it. Here are some cute proposals I found that will make the ladies cry tears of joy, and hopefully give the boys a few pointers. Some of these I came across have videos with them that I highly recomend your viewing! The links are listed below each proposal. Even though we are still teenagers, it’s nice to have something like this to look forward to. Enjoy!

#1. Lucy Rogers rides home from work everyday on the same

train and one day as she is on her way home one of the people on the train begins to sing Lovely Day. Not long after there are 25 people walking around and singing the song around her (most of the singers were in the Adams Street Singers) then her boyfriend she’s been dating for six years appears, he gets down on one knee and proposes. Lucy’s response was positive and the crowd burst into cheer.

#4. Brook and Britnee went to see the Goo Goo

Dolls in July, around that time Brook was thinking of ways to propose to Britnee. As he was thinking about it a song they didn’t know called “ Come To Me” began playing. Britnee loved the song the moment she heard it and cried as they played it giving Brook an idea. He gathered their closest friends and family to make a video holding signs and playing that song. At the end of the video was multiple signs asking her to marry him and one person holding the sign was the lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls. Brook dragged her into a theatre to watch the video and she said yes with much enthusiasm. www.youtube.com/watch?v=u61AcT-x2tk

http://www.buzzfeed. com/lukelewis/heartmelting-marriage-proposals

#2. On May 23rd Isaac Lamb surprised his girlfriend Amy Frankel with a lip dub performance to “Marry Me” by Bruno Mars as his Proposal. It starts out with two friends of theirs and gradually the group grows to 60 people. Isaac gathered friends and family from all over including both of their parents in the dance. Amy is riding in the back of a Honda with headphones in her ears and her hands on her heart playing the song as her loved ones dance on the street in front of her. The charming man even thought to video the friends that couldn’t make it to show her. At the end Isaac appears parting through the crowd looking dashing in a tuxedo and holding a bouquet of flowers. He then bends down on one knee and claims his love for her in the most romantic way. She then, of course, says yes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_v7QrIW0zY #3. As Roger Taylor and his girlfriend Jeanie Jagpal are walking through Pic-

cadilly Circus in London Jeanie is surprised by one of the most extravagant proposals known. Roger collected around 100 people to sing “Cant Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valli. If that wasn’t enough, he also hired close to 200 back up dancers. They started off casually walking with coats making them look like the average person then suddenly took off the coats and performed for the couple. Roger sings and dances along with the music then gets down on one knee to pop the question with a touching response from Jeanie. http://www.buzzfeed.com/lukelewis/heartmelting-marriage-proposals The Bottom Line Aren’t proposals just the sweetest? 10 | 2.11.14 | The Hilight

#5. This proposal is the most touching in my opinion even though I’m unsure of whom the people’s names are. As a tradition this couple would go to the girlfriend’s parents grave every year and they would send messages to them on balloons. This year was different for the two. When they were leaving he casually asked what she wrote to her parents, she replied and asked the same. He answers saying that he asked her father for permission to marry her as he gets down on one knee.

Infamous Couples

Twisted Twosomes Through The Years Leighanna Langford, Staff Writer Adam and Eve

The world’s first couple- people- that would inevitably “go down in flames”; As narrated in the Bible, Eve, (who was formed from Adam’s rib) tempted Adam to eat of the ‘forbidden fruit’ which God had instructed them against. As punishment, they were ousted from the Garden of Eden. An angel with a flaming sword was sent down to guard the humans from ever entering the garden again.

Bonnie and Clyde

The couple that embodies the phrase “Partners in Crime”; This disastrous duo was known for their bounteous, bumbling burglaries. The romantic view of a young couple on the run is quickly shattered by their murderous reputation, killing some 13 people, even innocent bystanders. The pair died together, both fatefully falling in a police ambush.

Marilyn and JFK

As depicted in this steamy shot, the famous affair of the beloved actress and president is still referenced today. Although uncomfirmed, I imagine the rumors were hard for the country and Mrs. Kennedy to deny given the sultry serenade, “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” Marilyn sang to him at his 45th birthday celebration, which started all the talk.

Sonny and Cher

The pop and television couple that dominated the 60’s and 70’s famously ended their union in 1975, after together selling over 40 million records worldwide. Even more infamous is their daughter, Chasity, more commonly known as Chaz Bono. Chaz was outed as a lesbian in the nineties and later underwent a femaleto-male operation between 2008 and 2010. The couple was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998, right after Sonny’s death in a skiing accident.

Hillary and Bill Clinton

Said to be the most famous political scandal since Watergate, this power couple turned scandalous in 1998. Monica Lewinsky, a 22-year-old intern at the White House, claimed to have sexual encounters with President Clinton. The scandal and investigation eventually led to his impeachment. The over-coverage of the affair in relation to the Watergate scandal led to nicknames such as the “Tailgate.”

Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love

Kurt Cobain has been called “the most important artist of the nineties,” (Rolling Stone) and was undoubtedly the pioneer-man of alternative rock. The Nirvana lead singer married Courtney Love, another alt. singer, in the early nineties. In 1994 tragedy struck- Cobain was found dead by suicide. Popular homicide theories that emerged shortly after are still contested, blaming Courtney Love for the murder of true grunge and its venerated trailblazer.

Rihanna and Chris Brown

The hip-hop interests began their relationship in 2005. In 2009, the well-known assault scandal erupted, yielding pictures of the Barbadian princess battered and bruised at the hand of a secretly abusive Brown. He only recieved five years of probation for the incident. Today the two maintain an on-againoff-again relationship, although early this January Rihanna reportedly burned the apology letter she recieved from Chris in 2013, saying “Good Riddance.” Rihanna’s full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty The Bottom Line 14 | 2.11.14 | The Hiligt

Famous Couples

The great loves we all look up to Bethany Pappas, Staff Writer Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet may be a fictional story written by William Shakespeare but it is still one of the most famous love stories of all time. It is the tale of two young and very passionate lovers Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague. They are forbidden to together due to a ridiculous feud between their families, but of course this doesn’t stop the two lovers. Unfortunately because they can’t be together because of the feud, they take their own lives in the end. Their love was so strong that they felt as if they could not be together, then they might as well not like at all. Although the story doesnt have a “fairy-tale ending”, doesn’t mean tht it isn’t one of the most dedicated love stories of all time.

Johnny Cash and June Carter

The love between Jonny Cash and June Carter can be described as a “Burning Ring of Fire”. These famous country singers shared a complicated and public relationship. June had been married and divorced twice with two children from each marriage before her relationship with Johnny began. Johnny was married with children of his own when he met June. The two singers fell in love and started a secred affair that eventually led to the divorce of Johnny and Vivian. Their complicated love was finally put at ease when the couple got married and had a son of their own, and stayed married until their deaths. Showing us all that just because it may be complicated at take time, true love always workds out in the end.

Cleopatra and Mark Antony

The love story between Cleopatra and Mark Antony is one of the most moving of all times. Their love story was, like Romeo and Juliet, dramatized by William Shakespeare. The historic figures were known for their extreme dedication to each other no matter the costs. The two fell in love instantly, or as many say ‘at first sight’. The two very powerful lovers put the country of Egypt in a powerful position by their relationship but unfortunately outraged the Romans who were afraid of the growing power of the Egyptions. Despite all of the difficulties Antony and Cleaopatra were married. Like Romeo and Juliet Antony heard falsely of Cleopatra’s death and took his own life, followed by Cleopatra herself. They were a perfect exapmle of showing us that true love demands great sacrifices.

Prince William and Kate Middleton

A modern day couple know by almost all fo the world is the prince of England William Louis and the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton. The two are a real life Cinderella story. Prince William and Kate Middleton fist met as St. Andrews University in Scotland. They first became friends which only later turned into a relationship. The couple dated on and off for eight years before becoming engaged and married. They have just recently had thier first child together. Their pullic relationship is truly fascinating and sought after by the pulbic. The love between a normal girl and the Prince of England has captivated the mind of the public and proved that we can all have our own Cinderella story.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have surprised the world and ignited the flame of paparazzi speculation with their relationship. The two have one of the most public and fast paced relationships in Hollywood. The couple are both famous invdividually and have been close friends for years without ever dating until recently. The two first shocked the world by announcing that they were a couple in early 2012, but they werent done with the surprises. Shortly after, they announced that they were pregnant adn have since had their first child, a daughter named North West. The couple is now engaged and is known to all as an extremely loving pair. It might have taken them years to get together but once they did they didn’t wast any time on showing their love for one another and starting their lives together.

Jay Z and Beyonce Knowles

Jay Z and Beyonce Knowles are a Hollywood power couple. The two are both widely famous artists and have very successful music careers. The two first met when Beyonce was only 17 and the two started a professional relationship, not a romantic one. Their professional relationship quickly turned into a friendship that lasted for a good two years. When the two first met Beyonce was in no rush to date after coming out of a seven year relatioship, and Jay Z was never thought to be an option. But after the constant working together the two began having feelings for each other and eventually started dating. They confirmed their romantic relationship in 2003 and got married in 2008 and have one child together, daughter Blue Ivy. Their relationship was always loved by the public and was slow paced, comfortable, and genuine.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

One of the most famously scandalous relationship is between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The power coup le is one of Hollywood’s favorites but it had a rocky start. Jolie and Pitt first met in 2004 on the set of their movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. At the time Pitt was married to actress Jennifer Anniston and Jolie had been married and divorced twice and had one adopted son. In 2005 they become the subject of a very publicized scandal claiming that the two were allegedly having an affair. The two denied these reports but admitted that they “fell in love” on the set of their film. Anniston filed for divorce in April and Jolie and Pitt announced they were expecting in 2006. They now have three adopted children and three biological children and have said they will marry “when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able.” More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold for Valentine’s Day each year.

Prom?

Best “promposals” of 2014 Kara Jackson, Staff Writer

The Sentimental Promposal: Senior, Mason Jones, taped into his sensitive side when asking the lovely Makala Hart- girlfriend of 2.5 years- to prom. This sweet promposal began when Clay Krout picked Makala up and silently drove her to CHS. Upon her arrival, Makala was greeted by Samuel Murphree who gave her a pink balloon with instructions to pop it; after the balloon was popped, a letter fell to the ground which explained the significance of CHS in their relationship: it was where they first met. Secondly, Makala was driven to Cracker Barrel where Josh Chambers was there to give here the second pink balloon with another beautifully written letter inside explaining why this particular restaurant is so important in their relationship: Cracker Barrel was the location of Mason and Makala’s first date.

As the marvelous memory of her first date with Mason was playing through her mind, Makala was taken to her house. This was the spot where Mason asked Makala to be his girlfriend. The last location down memory lane was Belk, and Ben Hinkle was there to give Makala her final letter. Here, she was reminded of the time when love was promised in the form of a ring. You might think that this would be all a girl’s heart could take, but Mason had one more surprise up his sleeve. Lastly, Makala was driven to Depot Park where the sweetheart himself was awaiting the arrival of his princess so he could “pop the question”. He was standing with a giant poster which read, “PROM?”, but the letters on the posters where made up of pictures of the two of them. How could a girl deny such a sweet promposal?

The “Light Up” Her World Promposal: Samuel Murphree was looking to light up the sky when surprising his girlfriend, Hillary Crider, to prom. His carefully constructed, fool proof plan was to take place on New Year’s Eve, just as Hillary was coming home from a ski trip in Canada.“When we pulled into my driveway all these standing fireworks began to go off and I was like, what is going on?” Explains, the thrilled to pieces, Hillary, “and when I got out of my car there were two rows of people holding sparklers

that lead me directly to Samuel.” Upon walking up to him he popped the much awaited question. And at the sound of her response, which was indubitably a yes, fireworks shot into the sky to signify the occasion. This amazing and oh so cute promposal is proof that chivalry is not dead and the master creator, Samuel Murphree, is a prime example of a boyfriend who knows just how to bring the New Year in with a “bang”.

Advice for the Boys: Don’t be that guy who waits until two weeks before prom and has to scramble to find a date! Here are some very valid reasons why, in this case, the early bird always catches the worm: A: Girls hate being asked to special occasions such a prom at the last minute. It is vitally important that we have plenty of time to make proper arrangements for finding a dress and making hair and make- up appointments. B: Procrastination is NEVER a good thing, but it can be especially problematic when it comes to finding a date to prom; if you wait too long, that special someone you’ve been dreaming of taking might already have a date, and then you are left all alone. What a tragic scenario to think of on such a happy occasion. So just do you and your sweetie a favor and ask well in advance. Distinguished Young Woman of 2014 How did our own Savannah Smith do? Marisa Franklin, Staff Writer In June of 2013 Savannah Smith was crowned as Cullman County’s Distinguished Young Woman. Eight girls participated in the Cullman County program, exhibiting their grace, coordination, athleticism, and academic achievements. The winner from each county in Alabama moved on to the state program on January 17th-18th. Savannah left a week in advance for the competition to finish learning choreography and stage positions. The 48 girls from around the state did not have an easy week. Their schedule was jam packed with rehearsals and community service activities.

Do not be deceived, the distinguished young women program is not a pageant. The girls are judged within 5 categories: academics, which counts 25% of the total scoring, talent, that counts for 25%, self expression which shows off the girls elegance and grace with choreography and giving a 20 second answer to a question that contributes 15% to her score, and lastly, a 10 minute interview with a panel of judges that counts for 20%. Savannah crazed her way into the top eight with her talent, grace, poise out of 48 girls and took home a $700 scholarship for the interview.

Aromatherapy

Health and happiness in a different day Hadley Hall, Staff Writer

Essential oils have been around forever, and they have proven themselves to be extremely beneficial to natural health. Many people say that aromatherapy is a powerful way to strengthen the body, as well as the mind.

What is aromatherapy?

The funny part about aromatherapy is that, even though you think you don’t know what it is, you experience it everyday. Anything you smell can affect you. For instance, imagine walking in the kitchen and smelling herbal tea on the stove. It gives you a cozy feeling. You may not know it, but the aroma is stimulating your senses. It is literally making you feel a certain way. With this being said, you can actually pick different oils to use for many different feelings. Not only does aromatherapy make you feel a certain way, but it also is categorized in a new level of science, psychoneuroimmunology. This is a new study that relates the immunological with psychological systems in order to strengthen the immune system. Needless to say, essential oils are most differently described as alternative medicine. In all honesty, I would refer to alternative medicine in many cases before I even with to the doctor. However, do not take this so seriously that you stop going to the doctor, because I am not an actual doctor.

How does it work?

You have five ways to take in senses, but did you know that the sense of smell reaches the brain first? Well, I would have you knew that because your nose is on your face. However, if you didn’t know that, it reaches the brain first. The molecules from the oils reach your brain and travel to different part of the brain. You could think of the next step as a domino effect. Once the molecules travel to a certain area of the brain, they act as hormone releasers which travel throughout the body. The difference between oils and synthetic medicines is that the oils do not send addictive, or harmful, chemicals to the brain's receptors.

How to use the oils?

Actually, the oils can be used on most of the olfactory senses. Smell, taste, and touch can all activate these oils. Too bad you can’t just look or listen to the oils and be affected. That would be strange. For smell, you can boil the oils over a stove, use a steam oil diffuser, or apply to your hands and simply breath in the oils. For taste, you can put the oil in liquid and drink it, but only as the oil directs. For touch, oils can be applied to different areas to activate the molecules. There are several different categories for oils: citrus, spicy, woody, earthy, herbaceous, floral, resinous, and camphoraceous. If you plan on using alternative medicine, my advice would be to choose at least one of each oils to start off. Each category gives a similar reaction, and they can be mixed with each other to make new aromas that work best for you.

Hadley’s Perfect Starter Kit

Since I have started my adventure into alternative medicine, I have gained some knowledge on what’s needed to get started. Here are a couple items I would begin with if I were you: Tangerine Oil Lavender Oil Basil Oil Peppermint Oil Cinnamon Oil Myrrh Oil Sandalwood Oil Juniper Berry Oil Concetration Diluter Now Essential Steam Diffuser Aromatherapy for Everyone Recipe Book* *Contains aromas use, application, index for certain symptoms, and recipes Comforting Combinations For Stress Relief: lavendar, myrrh, and sandalwood For Mood Lifter: Lavendar, tangerine, juniper For Colds and Cough: basil, cinnamon, and myrrh For Concentration: basil, and peppermint

Applications

Depending on what you are in need for, the oils can be applied in several different ways. Some techniques include showers and baths, hot compresses, steam inhalers, saunas, foot and hand baths, mouth washes, and direct application.

Examples of relief:

Mind Clarity, Stress relief, Joint and Muscle relief, Cold, coughs, and flu, Energy, Mood lifters

What’s Up With NBC? From the switch-ups to the mix-ups Sarah Robinson, Staff Writer

Most of you probably just know it as channel thirteen, but if you’re anything like me when you hear the letters N-B-C your head is filled with so much more than that. For me, NBC is a channel completely made up of comedy - being those are the only kind of shows I watch- and will forever be the home to my beloved show, “The Office”...and even after a year off air the separation pain is still real. *wipes tear away after memory of Jim and Pam’s love. However, this is neither here nor there, as an avid television viewer I’m here to tell you what all is up with our channel thirteen because in case you have missed it, a lot is.

1

The first big news comes in the form of late night programming which may become the biggest late night television change since the infamous Conan O’Brien / Jay Leno feud back in early 2010. Only this time Jay Leno isn’t the winner, in fact he is getting knocked out of late night television altogether, so I guess Conan won out after all after switching his program to the cable channel we all know and love, TBS. So now in 2013 NBC has decided it is time for more late night shake up after “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” ratings have incessantly skyrocketed over “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” for months on end. Jay didn’t put up an argument when he was asked to step down from his post after 22 years, and of course the always precious Jimmy Fallon was more than willing to step up for the cause of taking over the “The Tonight Show” time slot. But who would take Jimmy’s place? Well NBC directors asked the genius behind about half of NBC’s most famous programming- including directing “Saturday Night Live” weekly, none other than Lorne Michaels. Lorne quickly reacted with who he thought the best man for the job was, his own SNL writer/cast member, Seth Meyers. Seth has been an essential part to the SNL cast since the early 2000s, and although he will be dearly missed as the “Weekend Update” anchor his career is only just starting with this newfound opportunity. Both “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” will be premiering Monday, February 24th at the conclusion of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The second big change comes to a classic sketch show just mentioned, the always hilarious “Saturday Night Live.” However, this time the topic at hand was a tad more sensitive than a question of who should host what. This debate and criticism was based around an issue of race, and has been an issue for a whopping six seasons. When female cast member Maya Rudolph retired from SNL in 2007 the talking started, being that she was the only African-American female cast member questions quickly arose on who would replace her. Lorne Michaels did not have the answer, and finally after six seasons and male cast member complaints of having to play “drag” roles an actress was chosen. Her name is Sasheer Zamata and after first appearing mid-season on the January 18th episode with host Drake it was clear she was an instant hit. So check her out on the next new episode of SNL which will be filmed on March 1st and see what you think!

The last big news coming out of this network is none other than their exclusive coverage of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games, held in Sochi, Russia. It’s basically impossible not to love the Olympics, but especially the winter ones- I mean come on, who gets bored watching figure skating, or more complex sports like snowboarding? It just doesn’t happen. So lucky for us the two year Olympic cycle has come around once again for our entertainment, and for people like me the excitement is real! These winter games will be held from February 7th-24th, and if you missed the opening ceremonies this past Friday don’t feel bad because you’ve only missed a little bit of the action. So be sure to set your DVRs for your favorite events and always remember... USA! USA! USA!

On Seth Meyer’s final episode of SNL, he was paid a visit by Bill Hader’s famous character, Stephon (AKA Mr. Meyers)

iPads

Important guidelines

CHS A.P. students get tech-savy Sam Hunter, Staff Writer

Why do I have an iPad? Why don’t I have an I pad?

Cullman City Schools has been focused on the technology needs of teachers and students for many years. First, it was a LARGE laptop, then, it was a small laptop, and now its an I pad! Why do some students have I pads and some students do not ? The project is called a Flexible Learning Initiative, and it is being unveiled in phases. For Cullman High School, AP classes received I pads for the 2013-2014 school year. At the end of this school year, input will be taken from parents, students, and CCS employees in order to make a decision about the continuation of the program.

- Devices should be fully charged, brought to class, and stored in the case provided. - Devices should be kept away from liquids, extreme temperature, and excessive force or pressure. - Device volume should be muted unless sound is permitted by a teacher. -Devices may not be shared with others.

What is beneficial?

Mrs. Burroughs, AP literature teacher, says, “ They will gain invaluable skills that will give them an advantage over their peers as they, move into higher education. “ She also plans to use the I pads for note taking, research , and resources that will allow more time for specialized interaction.

Flappy Bird

The newest addicting game taking America by storm Makala Hart, Staff Writer

So, I’m sure you’ve all heard about this phenomenon of a game that has literally been driving people mad. Since the iPad distribution, Cullman High School has been competing against students, teachers, and even their ole’ folks back at home. The procedures to playing this game include: > Tap to flap your wings to fly > Avoid pipes > Try to get 4 medals: bronze, silver, and gold Now, this may sound like a piece of cake, but you’re wrong. So wrong. For me at least... This game is known to help with your hand, eye coordination. Which is something that I lack tremendously. We have some of our own flappy bird champions here at Cullman High School.
