Ever wondered where all the celebrities shop for their vintage clothes? Peekaboo Vintage was founded in 1991 and has grown from a simple market stall at Portobello Market to stocking Topshops vintage section. They may have grown to a huge vintage name but one thing hasn’t changed, from the market days to the catwalk days, Peekaboo have always sold handpicked, high quality vintage clothes.

We’ve collected together a few crafty ideas from some very talented people so you can create some beautiful home made decorations for your tree and around the house. You’ll also find some great make up and hair tutorials so you look extra special when the party starts!

Whether you’re having a huge get together with all your friends, a simple family dinner or a formal do with colleagues, a vintage theme can create a fantastic atmosphere.

Vintage china gives an instant quirk to any gathering, the more mismatched the better and with a little preparation you can gather together enough to serve the whole party.

Start early and you can collect a stunning collection to use throughout the year. If you don’t have the time or energy to collect your china then there are fantastic china hire companies that do all the hard work for you.

This may be the best option when it comes to a larger party.

Without decorations a party just isn’t a party and if you’re as sick of gaudy tinsel as we are then why not go for something a little more unique, have a look around and you can find some fantastic vintage tree ornaments but if you’re feeling really creative then you can always considering making your own from scratch, or even better, by upcycling some vintage fabrics.

There is something incredibly satisfying about seeing others enjoy something you made yourself. Not only can you decorate your venue with hand made decorations, you can create a delicious Christmas treat by hand. Whether it’s a picky buffet or a full on feast, don’t be tempted to buy things ready made. If you’re not a master chef then gather a few friends and cook together, you’ll have a much better time than stressing out alone and you’ll always learn things from each other.

So take some time and you can create something really special this year, a party you and your friends and family won’t forget.

GINGER BEER AND TANGERINE GLAZED HAM A delicious Christmas ham from the talented Maria Elia. Inspired by Nigella’s coke-cooked ham, this warming ginger-beer spiced, sticky ham is great for entertaining as it’s easily prepared in advance; and is sure to wow your guests! < serves 8 > 2kg mild-cure gammon

For the glaze

1 onion, halved

4 tbsp honey

zest of 4 tangerines, removed

2 tbsp wholegrain mustard

with a vegetable peeler (set

100ml ginger beer

aside the juice for the lentils)

handful of cloves

4 whole star anise

Chilli and Tangerine Braised

1.9 litres ginger beer

Lentils, to serve

Put the gammon, onion, tangerine zest and star anise in a large saucepan.

Pour over the ginger beer and top up with water, if necessary, so that the gammon is just covered. Bring to the boil, skim the surface and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for 2–21/2 hours, until the meat is tender. Leave to cool in the cooking liquor.

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees C /gas mark 7.

Remove the joint from the pan, setting aside the cooking liquor for the lentils. Once cool enough to handle, carefully cut the skin off the ham,

Leave to cool before slicing. Make sure you skim off the excess fat before using the liquor for the lentils. The best way to do this if you’re using immediately is to add a few ice cubes. The fat will congeal and you can ladle the majority off. Alternatively, cool then refrigerate overnight so the fat settles on the top.

A Very Traditional In 1925, Dorothy Allhusen gathered together recipes from friends and aristocracy, mixing them with her own to create ‘A Book of Scents and Dishes’.

This beautiful cook book is filled with incredible dishes from accross the world and is illustrated by Dorothy’s friend in classic 20s style. A kind woman, Dorothy writes a short preface to thank her friends for their help and to state that the proceeds of all sales will be going to charity. Among other things, the book lists some wonderful traditional Christmas recipes and with a bit of modern interpretation, these can be just as delicious today as they were back then.

GARLANDS For a slightly more sophisticated look, I have really enjoyed sewing paper to make garlands. I use my old hand cranked singer machine and an old needle (paper blunts needles really quickly) and some hexagons cut from my vintage wallpapers, but you can use old maps, pictures from magazines or even old sheet music for variety. Cut lots of similar size shapes, either by hand, or with a little punch cutter, available from craft stores. Use these patchwork paper hexagons if you would like us to cut them for you. Line up two shapes back to back and sew straight through the centre of them, feeding another pair through so they just touch to make the garland.

Keep sewing until you have a sweet little chain of shapes ready for hanging.

PAPER CHAINS Not just for Children, these are so satisfying to make.

Cut a strip of wrapping or wallpaper, approximately 15cm wide from a roll and stick a length of double sided tape all along the longest side. Leaving the backing on the tape, cut lots of little strips off down the length to make links for your chain. Peel off the backing and start building the chain a link at a time.

Use a variety of papers, old or new, linking together until you have made enough to drape around your tree or about the house.

CANDLE STICKS These really are Candle Sticks! Fallen twigs from recent high winds inspired these natural candleholders.

Take a trip to your local DIY or plumbing store and ask for some copper T joints. For the price of a latte you can buy 4 joints. Forage for twigs that are the right size to JUST go through the copper fitting. Find ones that have little branches at one end so they sit flat and evenly on the table without tipping over.

Use a sharp craft knife to cut a ring around the bark where you would like the copper to be and snap the twig in half here. Feed the twig into either side of the copper joint, using some glue (PVA, Hot glue gun or instant adhesive) to hold it in place with the opening pointing upwards when the twig lies nice and flat on the table. Find candles that fit snugly into the opening of the fitting. Make sure that the candle is safely in place, and add a little ball of blue tack to make sure it is secure and use all the usual common sense about not leaving candles unattended whilst alight.

ANTIQUE SHEET MUSIC CHRISTMAS CONES 1.Square your paper.

With both bottom corners 2. being held, roll one corner up and back around the paper while keeping the other hand holding it’s corner tightly.

3.While holding the cone

shape together with one hand at the “pointed” end use your paintbrush to run the glue mixture all the way down the long seam of the cone. Hold for a minute until the seam is dry enough to hold it’s position.

4.Once dry enough to handle, trim the top of the cone so it is straight across.

for your ribbon or twine to go through.

Coat the cone with the 6. slightly diluted PVA glue

mixture.Coat the area around the punched holes well as it will add strength to the paper.

Sit the cone upside down to dry.

Cut your ribbon or twine.

It’s a Shoe

Shoes just aren’t like they used to be. If you have ever bought a pair of vintage shoes, you will have felt the difference in quality.

Soft leathers, buckles and gentles curves gave the shoes of the past real and lasting superiority. Compared to modern shoes that are just as throw away as cheap high street fashion, shoes really used to mean something. We talked to Rachel Simpson, the director of Agnes and Norman, a shoe company who makes beautiful styles inspired by the past with just the same quality.

Are we reverting back to traditional shoe designs from days of yore?

Fashions have always come and gone throughout the ages, with the only pure originality coming from new technologies and materials. Even when we think something is totally original, chances are it has been done before in some format. However, this doesn't mean we can't design amazing new ideas-the art is taking your own inspiration, from whatever place you find it and combining it with the constructions and materials you love to create unique designs.

Are our fabrics better than they used to be?

We have some amazing materials at our disposal now, with amazing leathers in all different colours, textures and finishes, not to mention a wealth of incredible synthetics. The sad thing is that these are often overlooked in an increasingly cost-driven society, in favour of cheaper, less appealing materials which are a much lower quality than traditional fabrics. It's about getting the balance between wearability, style and cost and when this is achieved you have the perfect commercial shoe.

How are our styles better – I presume the fact that we are offering such a wide choice of sizes is a key point.

I wouldn't say modern design is better. You'd think it was more diverse, judging by the wide variety of amazing footwear styles there are, but if you look back throughout the ages, footwear has always had its fair share of crazy ideas. That's the beauty of footwear design, you can be as inventive and creative as you want, but at the end of the day you still need to produce a practical, engineered product.

It is unusual to come across someone who has taken the thing they are passionate about and made a career out of it. Emmy Nilsson is the creator of her own unique fashion brand, and designs beautifully cut vintage inspired clothing for the modern woman.

After graduating from The Copenhagen Academy of Fashion Design in 2008, Emmy found herself in the middle of the financial crisis. Despite her skills and ideas, she was one of the many creative students struggling to find a job in the fashion industry.

Not only was the financial state a difficulty of the time, the shops and existing brands around Sweden didn’t relate to Emmy’s style, nor cater to the slim but curvy silhouette she luckily boasts.

While others were still struggling, in 2010 Emmy decided to create her own business filling this gap in the market, selling high quality vintage inspired clothing for all sizes.

We caught up with the talented designer and talked to her about her fantastic style and the vintage scene in her home country of Sweden.

Your designs are very feminine, how important do you think it is for women to embrace that?

Understand me correctly when I say I truly am a feminist. But we have to realize that most women have curves and it is not realistic to idolize anorexic teenage girls as the norm for dressmaking when most women doesn’t look like that. To learn to respect our bodies for what they are we need to dress to embrace our bodies and not go against them. I think it’s important to learn to love our bodies with clothing that is truly made for women.

Retro style is so popular now, why do you think that is?

As usual, in times of crises around the world, there’s bound to be a countermovement. A time for reflection and looking back at a slower and more quality oriented fashion. There has been a period like that every once in a while throughout history. Historical TV series and films are very popular at the moment as well, with everything the 20s (Great Gatsby) to the 60s (Mad Men) and this rubs off on the high street fashion.

How is vintage inspired clothing different to real vintage?

I really love vintage but it’s so disappointing when you find the perfect dress and it’s the wrong size, has a big hole in it or is so fragile or stiff that you are afraid to move in it. With “repro”-clothing (reproductions)you can have the best of both worlds! You get the classic vintage looks but can choose from many sizes and materials made for every day use that can keep up with real dancing!

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

My inspiration is mainly in details from vintage pieces and from old magazines and movies. I could for example find a collar that I think looks nice and put

Cover Feature it on a totally different type of garment. I find my inspiration in garments from the 20s up to today but mainly 30s-60s. My choice of styles and colours has very little to do with trends and I design what I feel like for the moment. I try to think of cuts that will flatter different sizes, body shapes, ages and occassions and I keep the collections a mix of decades so that there is something for everyone.

What are your feelings about the throw away fashion of today, with huge brands mass producing low quality clothing?

I really think it’s a shame. The cotton market is getting worse and worse by the day as T-shirts are sold for almost nothing, thrown away the next day and exchanged for new ones because of low quality and fast fashion. This means that the prices increase for small businesses like mine and the gap is getting bigger and bigger between mass produced low price clothing and high quality clothing. If I could choose I would of course make affordable clothing for everyone to wear but with the world as it is today, everyone has got used to the extremely low prices of the high street. Affordable seems to mean practically free for most people now despite the fact that those prices are completely unrealistic in terms of climate and workmanship. When my grandmother was young, you would save up to buy a winter coat and it would last for years as you mended it once in a while and maybe remodeled it according to changing trends. Finally, when the coat was completely worn out, you would use it for patch working. That’s something for todays generation to think about when they buy a new 5£ T-shirt!

By making high quality clothing with a timeless style I do my part for slowing down the clothing industry and I hope that the big companies will soon follow the same path.

Is the vintage scene in Sweden as big as in the UK? In the 3 biggest cities (Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmoe) there is a thriving vintage scene but I believe it is more widely spread in the UK. The rockabilly scene with the music and the cars however has been a recognized subculture here since the 60s and I believe Sweden is the country that has the highest amount of American 50s-60s cars in the world.

What is the best thing about what you do?

To see a collection that I worked with for almost a year finally hitting the streets. Creating it from blank paper, building up the patterns and working with the fitting. To get heart warming emails and comments from happy customers that “finally have found a pair of trousers that looks good on their body after wearing skirts for 10 years” or that thanking me for their “dream wedding dress come true”.

And as any girl could imagine I always look forward to getting some new garments for myself!

ABOUT

On 15th September 1916 in a muddy cratered field in northern France 36 metal machines we now know as tanks were deployed for the big push during the Battle of the Somme. These machines of death and destruction were the unlikely inspiration for Louis Cartier to design the Tank watch.

In 1917, the designer began his iconic creation, unveiling it to the world in 1919. This watch is still in production today and is such a recognised design that a tank shape generally refers to the watch rather than the armoured vehicle. It may seem like unlikely inspiration, but the 1st World War tank as seen from above is a box in the middle with tracks either side extending further than the box. Louis Cartier saw this and distilled the shape to a square in the middle, which has the dial and the lugs extend from each corner with no decoration to detract from the purity of shape. To this elegant style Cartier added the now trademark white dial with bold roman numerals and a cabochon Sapphire winder crown.

This watch spawned many derivatives from Cartier starting with the American Tank, this being a more elongated rectangular shape compared to the more recent Tank Francaise, this being a sportier model. But there are others such as the Obus, Divan and Chinoise to name a few.

All the tank models are classic and a regular Tank can be had for as little as £750.

This price tag would get you the Must de-Cartier model made in silver with at least 20 microns of gold plate. An 18ct gold version starts at about £1500 for a ladies quartz model to £2700 for a gent’s mechanical. Vintage models from the 1920s to the 1960s are rarely available but when they do come up at auction they start at about £3000 and go to £10,000.

A Tank American is rarer than the regular Tank as Cartier never made as many, also they are only made in gold or platinum. These start at £2500 for a ladies 18ct gold quartz on a strap to £10,000 for a gent’s 18ct gold large automatic on a bracelet. Platinum ones are too rare to have an average price.

I once read an interesting story about the design of the Tank American which said, during the 1st WW the Americans did not want to buy our tank so they made their own which was longer with 2 guns on each side as opposed to the British version with one gun on each side. On seeing this Louis Cartier made an elongated Tank watch, which he called the Tank American, or the clever man could have called it that as marketing ploy to sell watches to the Americans.

The Tank Francaise is a more recent design, and as such more robust and plentiful as well as coming in a larger choice of models. From the ladies steel on a steel bracelet, to a gents Chronoflex 18ct on an 18ct bracelet. The Francaise is the flavour of the moment so any model on a bracelet is good, as are any of the 3 sizes. This model is made in all materials and combinations, steel, steel and gold, gold, and platinum.I personally feel that a diamond version is a bad option. The Antiques Centre based on the St Michael’s Trading Estate in Bridport is even bigger.

How does vintage fur differ from modern furs and fakes when it comes to the moral high ground?

These days, you will find countless real fur items in vintage shops, and step into any vintage or antiques market and you will see rails of fur, from wild rabbit to endangered leopard in coats, stoles and gloves. In many seller's opinions, as long as the fur was farmed correctly then there is no difference between wearing leather and eating meat, as the majority do. It’s not the modern fur debate that is the issue that is constantly puzzling opposers; it is whether it is moral to wear vintage furs when they are not products of the factory farms protesters stand against today.

Fur wasn’t always the controversial statement it is considered now. There was a time when it was wholly accepted, and people who boasted these fine pieces were considered wealthy, it was a look to strive for, to lust after. The feeling of luxury that comes with fur is something that has not gone, and it can’t be denied that when shrugging on some glossy pelts one does immediately feel like a 40’s star, instantly classy. It is no surprise then that since the public developed a conscience, and fur, on the whole was discarded that fakes were introduced.

Fake fur is easy to come by, gracing shelves and rails up and down the high street. Not only is it attainable but it also costs just a fraction of a new real fur. Fake fur is not without its debate however, and aside from the question of whether it looks and feels as good as the real thing, various companies have disputed the environmental impact of producing the false fibres. The British Fur Trade Association found fake fur was responsible for 50 per cent of our toxic nitrous oxide emissions and that it takes a gallon of oil to produce three fake fur coats.

The statistics scattered over the internet are dubious however, and it could be said that because fur has fallen out of style due to the moral issues that furriers are trying to twist the facts in order to make their fur more appealing by presenting it as eco friendly. PETA states on their website that ‘furs are loaded with chemicals to keep them from decomposing in buyers’ closets, and fur production pollutes the environment and wastes precious resources. It takes more than 15 times as much energy to produce a fur coat from ranch-raised animals than it does to produce a fake fur. Plus, the waste produced on fur farms poisons our waterways. And don’t forget … unlike faux fur, the “real thing” causes millions of animals to suffer every year.’

It seems that if you want to wear fur and feel like a glamour queen then there is no moral high road to take. That is, unless vintage is ok. While there is evidence that both real and fake fur could do damage to environment, vintage pieces have already been created, and so are not at any risk of adding to this issue. The animal cruelty problem associated with modern fur farms is difficult to relate to vintage coats. Well-made pelts can last up to hundreds of years and the animals are long dead and so missed the fur farm epidemic that has caused modern fur to become such a taboo. Many celebrities and designers have embraced the vintage fur trend in the spirit of recycling. Vintage furs can be remodelled, redesigned and re-worn at no cost to the environment and without supporting the modern fur trade.

The draw back? You are still wearing the fur of a animal whose life was cut short, and, while you may feel guilt free when sporting your vintage find, other less educated fashionistas may see you in your wintry pelts and want a piece of the furry action. They, unlike you, may unknowingly go for a modern fur, supporting the fur farms along with the cruelty they condone. If they hadn’t seen you wearing your more moral option then they may not have opted for a furry route when winter strikes. Are you then, in turn, guilty of supporting the fur trade? The connotations of wearing vintage fur may be the same as modern fur, but is it any different to wearing fake? In the end, it is your moral code that will dictate how far you will go in order to look fabulous, but if you eat meat and wear leather it seems that wearing the vintage fur of an animal long gone really isn’t that bad. It certainly is the lesser of two evils when compared to modern fur and if you have the urge to twist your morals just a tad then it’s probably the best way to go. Do be prepared, however, to defend yourself against more vocal protesters when you take your vintage coat out for a stroll on the next frosty day.

Chichester is a beautiful cathedral city four miles inland of the West Sussex coast. It’s been the home of the world famous Goodwood Revival since 1998 and has been revered as the mecca of vintage ever since. Thousands of people flock from around the globe to attend the event and as a result the city has built up a healthy collection of vintage and retro traders.

Naturally there are a plethora of high quality online traders based in Chichester such as Vintage Home and Violet & Fraiser but take to the streets and you will not be disappointed. The city centre is in essence, made up of four main streets, North, East South and West with the Chichester Cross. With many side streets full of hidden gems, Chichester really is worth exploring for treasures.

Starting at the top, and tucked away in Crane Street is the cavernous emporium One Legged Jockey, with a large collection of ladies wear as well as rails and rails of menswear. The shop is littered with accessories and unusual odds and ends to amuse you.

Taking the route to East Street is one of my favourite boutiques. Tucked down Jays walk you’ll find beautiful garments in Vintage @ Chi, handpicked by the owner Liz who has spent many years in the fashion industry so this lady knows her stuff. With a real eye for designer labels and high quality, this shop is a real favourite in the run up to Goodwood Revival. Complete with an original shop counter full of sparkly items, Vintage @ Chi is well worthy of a thorough rummage.

At the end of East Street, the road forks dramatically to become The Hornet and if you peer over to the right, you’ll spot a fabulous shop with Tardis like qualities called The Carousel. This quaint outlet is a colourful merry-go-round of ever changing vintage and lovely stock from Chichester traders and makers. Giving regular ‘fayre’ traders a place to have a constant high street presence, The Carousel is an exciting shop to visit as there’s always something new to see.

Crossing the road in The Hornet, you’ll see the wide shop frontage of Beyond the Fringe. This shop has been here for many years and despite it’s limited opening times it’s a popular vintage hideout and packed to the rafters with clothing, hats, accessories and various unusual items of interest.

Heading back toward the centre and back down South Street, you find St Wilfrid’s Hospice shop which is known locally for holding it’s fabulous yearly retail event. Just a few weeks before Goodwood Revival, they fill the Assembly Hall in North Street with their vintage and retro items for a ‘one day only’ sale.

Chichester is the home of the popular Vintage and Very Nice Market Bazaar. With free entry to visitors, they have curated a collection of traders, artists, crafts people and vintage mongers, offering a myriad of treasures under one roof.

Markets are a living breathing part of London’s history, and from Camden Lock, to Portobello Road and Greenwich, London has always been a market town.

The busy bustling shoppers moving through colourful stalls, undercover and open air, shopping for fruit, vegetables, fabrics and clothes bring a whole different meaning to thenword shopping. Markets hold a historic place in the life of the city and even though the stall holders wares may have changed slightly, when browsing a market you are given a feel of what shopping was like in the past.

With the high street shops now seemingly taking over, the market is more important than ever, and just as you can usually find big brand shop’s flagship stores in London, so too you will find the best, most iconic markets. Markets are arguably the home of vintage, with sellers usually starting out with a stall to sell their stock directly to the buyer. There is nothing quite like wandering through a vintage market, browsing different trader’s wares and usually being able to haggle on prices. These independent stalls with their unique stock seem to be the very antidote to the ‘cloning’ on our high streets.

With so many markets to choose from in our capital, you will find that they usually reflect the character of their area. Reminders of London’s ancient markets can be found in street names that sometimes go

Portobello Market has become one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world and the exotic sounding names of the pubs, arcades and streets in the area are often historic. This old market has become built up over the years and branched out to several other markets off the original. You will also recognise this iconic location in the film Notting Hill which has since made the area more popular than ever.

green Portobello Market’s iconic stalls spread across the aread at their heart you will find Portobello Green. This colourful market has been famous for it’s diverse and eclectic mix of vintage and fashion stalls for decades.

Beneath an attractive white canopy below the busy Westway flyover, this is a serious fashion market where you will find shoppers on the hunt for bargains. Less touristy than Portobello Road itself, you will not be as bogged down by gawpers here as you rummage the fantastic wares on offer. The orderly stalls here sell everything you would expect from a vintage market, gorgeous vintage clothing and handmade clothing, crafts, jewellery and gifts. Most of the sellers are regulars

which gives the place a jolly air and a real sense of community with friendly traders usually up for a haggle.

With so many fantastic items on sale here, it is a good place to celebrity spot with designers and models alike getting in early to root through the rails. On the Friday you will find a slightly smaller market, but equally worth a visit with experienced clothes dealers generally setting up. On the weekend itself, the market expands with the number of stalls doubling and the stock getting a bit more varied with cheaper retro items popping up among more craft and high quality vintage.

When so many fashion scouts scour the market for design and print inspiration, you are sure to find something incredible before the remake has ended up on the high street.
