Swanny’s Scribbles Good afternoon and welcome to the Scholars ground for today’s game against Loughborough Dynamo. We extend a warm welcome to Loughborough and hope they enjoy our hospitality.

It was great to progress into the next round of the FA Trophy last weekend with what I thought was a very good all round performance.

We had a clear game plan and the lads, to a man, put in a great shift.

With Wynts, Melbs, Joey, Liam, Lundy and Botty all missing, once again it shows the strength of the squad we have here and the lads who came in to the side were superb!

The Warrington Town draw will be a tough task but we will go there in a confident mood as we do to all games.

Today is back to the bread and butter of the league and another extremely difficult opposition in Loughborough Dynamo. Their league position does not paint a true picture at present, and we remember just how strong they were when last year’s campaign was curtailed. As always, we will have to be at our best to get anything from the game.

I’m sure you will join me in welcoming new signing Jakob Burroughs. Jakob is a competitive and tenacious midfielder who joins from Market Drayton. Whilst young, he comes with excellent pedigree having featured for Rushall Olympic prior to his move to Drayton. Jakob will be a welcome addition to the squad.

Finally, we would all like to send our best wishes to John Franklin and wish him a speedy recovery from Covid. We hope to see him down the ground for our weekly chat soon.

OFFICIAL CLUB SPONSORS SEASON 2021–2022

Local man Steve Jones, Chairman of prestigious Chasetown-based company Crown Highways, has pledged the company’s support to the Scholars as Official Club sponsor for their eleventh successive season.

Loughborough Dynamo- History Dynamo was formed in 1955 by pupils of Loughborough Grammar School. A few years after World War II the school switched from football to rugby. Several pupils wanted to play organised football, so the club was formed in what might say was a secretive manner, including unauthorised meetings in the school library!

The club’s name comes from FC Dynamo Moscow, which had played in the United Kingdom in friendly matches on tours in both 1945 and 1955. The club colours of gold and black come from Wolverhampton Wanderers, who played against Dynamo Moscow at Molineux on November 9th, 1955.

After two seasons of leading a nomadic existence playing away friendly matches, the club ventured into league football in 1957 and found its first home, the old Shelthorpe playing fields in Loughborough (now an 18-hole par 3 golf course). The league was the Loughborough Alliance League.

Dynamo entered in Division 3 and quickly rose through the divisions, eventually winning the League.

However, Dynamo was prevented from moving into the Leicestershire Senior League due to lack of facilities.

The club switched to the Leicester and District League in 1966, by which time Dynamo had moved across Loughborough to Bottleacre and the old ground of Morris Sports.

Dynamo played in this league for five years, moving into the East Midlands League in 1971. However, Dynamo underperformed at this level and saw relegation to the Central Alliance League and almost immediately back to the Leicester and District League.

During this period Dynamo experienced two further moves of ground, enforced by Morris Sports sale of the Bottleacre ground for use as industrial premises. First was back to Shelthorpe, this time to Shelthorpe Primary School, then on to the club’s current home of the Nanpantan Sports Ground (NSG), renamed The ADT Stadium in the Summer of 2018, ADT Taxis being the club’s new ground sponsor. On the Charnwood Forest side of the town and on the edge of Loughborough, the ground had recently been bought by Charnwood District Council from the Brush manufacturing company of Loughborough. The Council own it to this day.

It was at its current home that the club was playing in the Leicestershire Senior League Division 1, but the facilities were not good enough to enable promotion the Premier Division. The specific requirement was floodlights.

Loughborough Dynamo- History It was then that discussions took place between the club and Loughborough University, the education facility was looking to integrate into the local community, and the offer was to develop, with Dynamo, the facilities at the NSG. Also, James Ellis came on board as manager. All this occurred in the early 2000’s and enabled the club to gain promotion to the Premier Division and start its development to where it is today.

The period of James Ellis’s management saw the club stabilise in the Premier Division and then go on a period of success in Leicestershire football circles. The club won the Premier League title, won the Leicestershire Senior Cup and retained it the following season, and also won the League Cup and President’s Cup. Promotion was then achieved to the Midland Football Alliance (MFA). This promotion was also thanks to the massive effort from volunteers to enable the NSG to be ready to stage football at MFA level.

Dynamo stabilised in the MFA, and then came the memorable season of 2007-8 when under the management of Adam Beazeley, assisted by John Folwell and Simon Tebbutt (James Ellis having moved on), the club achieved promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One South.

2010 saw Dynamo lift the Westerby Challenge Cup, the main knockout cup for Leicestershire sides, at the Walkers Stadium, the home of Leicester City. The club had a joint managerial team at this point of Ian Blyth and Scott Clamp, Barwell being the defeated opponents.

Two years later, with the Walkers Stadium now renamed the King Power Stadium and with Scott Clamp as sole manager, Dynamo won the trophy for a second time, defeating Hinckley United from two leagues higher in the non-league pyramid.

Tom Brookbanks became Manager in May 2013, and by the start of the 2014-15 season had built an entertaining side, and in September of that season Dynamo topped the division, the highest position in the club’s history. But off fields matters came to a head the following month and the management team and squad was suddenly ripped apart, and the club slid down the table.

The following two seasons were not easy on the pitch, finishing 20th in both the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 campaigns, one place above the relegation positions.

Loughborough Dynamo- History In the latter season the experienced Peter Ward took over as Dynamo’s Manager just after Christmas 2016 and steered the club to its own ‘Great Escape’, winning the last four matches of the season (the first three of those matches being away, two to the other clubs involved in the relegation battle) to finish four points clear of the relegation places.

Under Peter’s Management Dynamo finished the 2017-18 season fifteen points and six places better than a year previously, as well as reaching the Leicestershire Challenge Cup, going down 7-6 on penalties to Premier Division Coalville Town, after the game finished 2-2. Peter felt this was the best time to move on with Peter’s Assistant, former Dynamo player Lee Attenborough, stepping up into the Manager’s post. Lee has previous managerial experience at Leicestershire Senior League Sileby Town and East Midlands Counties League side Ashby Ivanhoe.

Lee’s first season in charge had its ups and downs but a strong finish, in which Dynamo won all of their final six games resulted in Dynamo finishing eighth in the league, only six points off a play off place.

Seasons 2019-20 & 2020-21 were both cut short and declared null and void due to the COVID 19 Pandemic. However when season 2020-21 was declared void Dynamo were sitting in second spot.

Loughborough Dynamo Pen Pics 2021-22 JASON ALEXANDER – An imposing presence in goal, this is Jason’s fourth season at Dynamo having previously been with Boston United, Clipstone and Worksop Town.

JACK ANDREWS – A solid centre back who as recently rejoined Dynamo from Eastwood.

RUBEN RABSTEIN - Young goalkeeper currently studying at Nottingham University previous club Welwyn Garden City.

MERLIN FERRINHO – A young full back, who has made the switch across the town joining Dynamo from Loughborough University.

He joined last summer but is yet to play competitively for Dynamo after suffering a nasty injury.

JOSH RILEY – A promising right back who can also play as a midfielder or forward.

RORY COLEMAN - Rory played as a professional at Scunthorpe United. Rory is an athletic full back who can also play in a variety of positions. Previous clubs Scunthorpe United, Gainsborough Trinity, Ilkeston, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Grantham Town.

CARL SIBSON – Now in his third stint with Dynamo, a powerful centre back who also contributes with goals, previously with Nottingham Forest and Shepshed Dynamo.

MICHAEL JACKLIN – An experienced old school defender who can also contribute with a couple of goals a season. Joined from Cleethorpes Town this summer. Previous clubs included Stamford, Worksop Town, Lincoln United and Grantham Town.

DANNY GORDON – Joined Dynamo from Carlton Town in early 2018, a left sided player who can play left back, left wing back and left wide in midfield. Previously with Heather St John’s.

JAKE FINNERTY – Joined Dynamo this summer from Heather St Johns, having previously played for Desford.

JACK SMITH – A young midfielder who made his mark on the team last season, having joined Dynamo from Frickley Athletic.

LUKE THOROGOOD – Was with Lee Attenborough at Ashby Ivanhoe where he played as a forward. Since arriving in the summer of 2017, Luke has played at right back and in midfield.

CURTIS BURROWS – A player with a lot of experience at this level football, signed from Coalville Town, previous clubs Ilkeston Town and Grantham.

Loughborough Dynamo Pen Pics 2021-22 ROB NORRIS - A skilful player with bags of experience, he brings additional quality to the midfield in addition to his proven goal-scoring ability. Rob began his career in Boston United’s academy.

EVAN GARNETT – A proven goal scorer who signed for Dynamo this season, joining from Stafford Rangers.

CHARLIE YOUNG – A centre midfielder, arrived summer of 2018 from East Midlands Counties Football League side Birstall United.

COUREY GRANTHAM – Courey signed this summer from Basford and he is a striker who is quite physical and likes to use his height.

His former clubs include Ilkeston and Heanor.

SASHA MARKELIC – A young pacy winger who is able to play on either the left or the right side of midfield, joined Dynamo from Kimberley Miners Welfare.

TRISTAN MATTHEWS – An attacking midfielder who joined Dynamo from Heanor Town.

DANIEL COLLINS– An up and coming front player who has really shown how good he is recently. Joined Dynamo from Loughborough University.

ALEX STEADMAN – A player who bolster’s Dynamo’s attacking options.

The winger / strikers former clubs are Gresley, Mickelover Sports, Belper Town and Chasetown.

ANDRE WILLIAMS – Andre is a winger who joined Dynamo from Kirby Muxloe having previously played for Coalville Town.

KEVIN Da SLVA BASTOS – An exciting winger with raw pace and plenty of ability, who out wide can isolate defenders and be a genuine threat in one v one situations. Duel registered with Tamworth.

Up for the Cups!

You may have seen over the last week or so that we have had fixtures confirmed in both the FA Trophy and The Staffordshire Senior Cup. Both of these fixtures are away from home so it would be great to have an army of fans travelling to both games. Albeit one is definitely closer than the other.

In the FA Trophy we travel north to face Warrington Town on Saturday 13th November.

Chasetown made a bright start and Aaron Ashford forced a fingertip save from Daniel Jezeph. Then from the resultant corner, Langston fired just over the crossbar from long range.

Langston again went close on the half hour putting a free header wide of the post from 6 yards.

The visitors had the ball in the net, ruled out for offside, but took the lead 2 minutes into the second half as Charlie Dowd fired a right footer past Curtis Pond.

Within a minute, the Scholars were level. A cross from the left was finished by Langston on the half volley. Chasetown were straight in the ascendancy and Langston then forced a finger tip save from Jezeph.

On 55 minutes, Langston gave Chasetown the lead with a deflected effort from outside the box beyond the despairing dive of Jezeph.

Kick Off 3pm.

Ashford had a great chance to seal the victory ten minutes from time.

He broke from half way but his left foot shot was saved the legs of the Church keeper.

The Worcestershire side then rattled the post from the left boot of Sam McLintock.

The Scholars did start brightly and midfielder Andy Westwood had two great goalbound efforts in the 7th and 9th minute, the first were palmed away by Adam Jenkins to his left and the second was met by an even better save from Jenkins, conceding a corner at full stretch.

Gradually, the home side took control though and took the lead just short of the half hour. Chris Deakin cut in from the wing and picked his spot giving Mariusz Kisiel no chance in the Chasetown goal.

Kisiel made a good low save to deny David Waple, while Chasetown’s best chance in the remainder of the half was also conjured up by Westwood whose long range effort was parried out by Jenkins who reacted superbly to make a second save to keep out Nick Wellecomme’s half volley from the rebound.

At the beginning of the second half, former Scholar Lee Smith fed Tom Green with a through ball from midfield and Kisiel did well to dive out at Green’s feet and then save the follow up effort from Waple.

Heath Hayes doubled their lead in the 54th minute however with a second goal from Deakin which looped over the outstretched hand of Kisiel following an initial corner kick.

Chasetown made a host of substitutions to try and alter the balance of the cup tie, with Danny Smith looking the most likely to reduce the deficit with a couple of shots narrowly off target.

Jenkins made a good low save to his right from Tyrone Clarke-O’Connell, while Scott Rickards had a fierce drive blocked by defender Tom Baggott.

Hayes’ substitute Haydn Marklew hit the crossbar late on as the home side deservedly progressed into the Quarter Final.

He became the favoured number one in the October of the 2016/2017 season. Pond has held this position as number one keeper throughout different managerial changes and continues to hold this position for the 2021/22 season. Jordan Evans – Defender Jordan joined the Scholars in July 2020 from neighbours Lichfield City after four years at the club. An athletic, attack minded left back will really add competition in that area for us.

Zack Foster – Defender Zack joined The Scholars during 2020 and has committed to stay with The Scholars, he is a pacey defender who isn’t afraid to get forward and get crosses into the box and help with the Chasetown attack. However, he can also get in a strong tackle and match any pacey winger of the opposition.

Chasetown’s Pen Pics Oli Hayward – Midfielder Oli is an attacking midfielder or right back that joined Chase in June 2017. Very skilful with great energy levels, the former Lichfield player also has an eye for goal.

Hayward has returned stronger after suffering a double leg break at the start of the 2018/19 season. Hayward is a strong midfielder who helps protect the defenders by putting in the tackles in the centre of the pitch. He originally joined the club in March 2014. Jack has stayed with the club through managerial changes and is a favourite amongst the fans which is helped by him knowing where the goal is and achieving top goal scorer for the club on multiple occasions.
