On behalf of all the students at Charters School, Sunningdale we would like to thank you for your support during 2015/2016. Every contribution is hugely appreciated and collectively your donations continue to make an impact that you can be proud of.

Charters School is an Outstanding School and it’s also a school that stands out from the crowd. It stands out because of all the ‘extras’ that its students appreciate and enjoy over and above excellent teaching and learning.

Many of these extras have been funded by you and you have enriched the experience of the students at Charters immeasurably. This booklet will give you more information about the ways in which your voluntary contributions have benefited Charters’ students this year.

Ways in which you’ve supported us this year...

The Big Give The Big Give development fund was launched last year to fund the extras that ensure that we can continue to provide the very best opportunities for our students; to excel academically; to pursue extra curricular activities; and to realise their potential. The majority of our supporters contribute to this fund and we are very grateful for this support.

Corporate Sponsorship We have continued to build relationships with local and national organisations, encouraging them to support the school financially by sponsoring equipment, competitions, teams, events and enrichment programmes.

Legacies Leaving a legacy is a wonderful way to support us in a way that is not always possible during your lifetime and we would like to thank those of you who have already pledged to leave a gift to the school.

Gifts in Kind We continue to receive Gifts in Kind. This year we received office furniture, several musical instruments, books for the library and stationery. We are grateful to our in-kind supporters who give us so much.

We are hugely grateful to our community of supporters who have answered The Big Give Appeal and now give what they can, monthly and sometimes annually, to our school development fund. As a result of these donations, we have been able to fund a range of opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible without this support. These are just a few of them:

KEEPING OUR MINIBUSES ON THE ROAD

“I genuinely feel as if the The Duke of Edinburgh expedition could be one of the most important experiences of my life. I feel so focused on my future now.”

Last year our minibuses cost us approximately £20,000 to run and they allowed us to take our students out and extend their experiences beyond the classroom in ways that many other state schools can’t match. Last year, for example, our students visited various universities, including Oxford and Cambridge; they went off to the Chiltern Hills for the Duke of Edinburgh expedition; and they enjoyed a fabulous performance of Carmina Burana at The Barbican.

“I don’t usually listen to classical music much but I was transfixed by Carmina Burana. It was just so moving.”

“The visit to Oxford has really made me think I’d like to study there. I met some really cool students and lecturers and it all seemed so exciting.”

SCHOOL COUNSELLING SERVICE

Many schools cannot afford to fund their own counselling service so they have to send their students to external services.

“I don’t know what I’d have done if I hadn’t found someone to talk to. I was really upset and worried but the counsellor let me know that there would always be someone in the school to support me.

That makes such a difference.”

“Wow. I loved listening to Abi Elphinstone talk about her first book ‘The Dreamsnatcher’.

She inspired me to read more.”

TENNIS COACHING

Charters School’s Simon Grassi won the Education Award at the East Region Aegon British Tennis Awards, an achievement which goes a long way to explaining our teams’ successes in local and national competitions.

“The coaching that I’ve received at Charters has really improved my style and I’m winning far more matches now.”

Charters School Capital Campaign We are building a Centre of Excellence for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and we will need your help to equip the interior with ‘state of the art’ furniture, decor and educational apparatus.

Charters School 60th Anniversary Celebrations In April 2017, at our annual Founders Day Ball, we will be launching a year-long series of profile-raising events culminating in a glitzy 60th anniversary ball in April 2018.
