The academic year 2015-16 has flown by and it is wonderful to look back on another year of outstanding achievement by Charters students both academically and in an incredible range of activities. It is always a boost to return to school having secured very good results in the previous summer’s examinations. We are happy to report, therefore, that staff have a spring in their steps because of the achievements of our Year 11 and Sixth Form students last year.
Over the last three or four years there has been a marked improvement in our performance at A Level and in 2016 58.3% of entries were graded A*, A or B: by a significant margin, the best results in the school’s history. The hard work of staff and students, ably supported by parents, has enabled the Year 13s to surpass expectations. As a result, increased numbers have secured their first choice university, with significant numbers going to Russell Group universities including four students who have secured a place at Oxbridge. There was strong performance by Year 11 also but with the new accountability measures introduced this year, like all schools, we are finding it hard to analyse the results fully. What we are encouraged by is that 78% of our students gained, what the government term, the ‘Basics’ measure – A*-C for both GCSE English and Mathematics. Within a national context of continual educational change and a 1.3% drop in performance by Year 11 students nationally this is a strong outcome alongside the fact that 82% of all entries received A*-C grades. Particularly noteworthy is that 36% of all the entries received grades A* or A.
