CHARTERHOUSE

DEVELOPMENT REVIEW

The world is changing very quickly. The future workplace and career opportunities are predicted to transform hugely in the decades ahead. In addition to our excellently taught academic courses and vibrant co-curricular programmes we endeavour to equip all of our pupils with the future skills they will need to thrive in our fast-evolving world. Now, more so than ever, our pupils need to rely on a foundation of transferable skills, professional knowledge, experiences and mindset which are developed at School and which become second nature in their life beyond Charterhouse. Our aim is to ensure Charterhouse’s pupils are amongst the most future-ready young people in the UK. The School’s FutureU programme is key to this Carthusian experience.

4

The CED will be available to Specialist pupils and will provide them with the opportunity to gain a Level 3 qualification alongside 16 UCAS (university) points for completing the course. This is the first time a course such as this has carried UCAS credits. Alongside the building project to create The Hub, the Summer of 2023 has seen work start on the extension to the Art and Design Centre to create a new gallery and creative spaces as well as to link Studio with the John Derry Technology Centre. Preparation work has also begun for refurbishment and extension in 2024 which will include a new drama studio in the Ben Travers Theatre.

The 2022/23 academic year has marked yet another important milestone in Charterhouse’s recent history; our first year of full coeducation, with girls now in each of our 5 year groups. In support of our pupils’ all-round education, I am pleased to report that our capital works programme continues and we were delighted to open the newly refurbished Lecture Theatre in OQ 2022. The Lecture Theatre is part of The Hub, our brand new space focused on developing business, leadership and entrepreneurship skills. The Hub is a £2.9 million redevelopment project, which has been fully funded by our community of Old Carthusians and parents. This is the biggest fully funded project this century and I wanted to extend my personal thanks to everyone who has contributed and enabled us to achieve our goal. Every contribution, big or small has made a huge difference.

Our international school community continues to grow and earlier this year we were delighted to announce Charterhouse Lagos as the newest member of the Charterhouse family of schools. This new School is due to open in 2024. Service, responsibility and duty have long been core pillars of the Charterhouse education and our outreach and community work, both institutional and pupil-led, continues to grow. Our partnership with Broadwater School, a local state secondary school, continues to expand and now includes a joint CCF programme, amongst other activities. We remain committed to Thomas Sutton’s founding intent to provide young people with bursaries to join our School. In 2022/23 we supported 73 pupils with financial support, many of whom benefitted from meaningful bursaries. We were especially delighted to welcome students from the “Homes for Ukraine” scheme and to play our part in helping those who have been displaced from their homes due to the war.

The Hub will be the focal point for our new FutureU programme which is our commitment to providing every pupil with the foundation of skills they need to be future-ready. Alongside our pledge to academic excellence and co-curricular success, we will focus on enabling pupils to have the transferable skills, professional knowledge, experiences and mindset required to thrive and adapt in life.

I continue to extend my warmest thanks to everyone who has played a part in providing financial support or their valuable time to volunteer, mentor or to attend an event. The Charterhouse community makes the difference for everyone in the School and I am so grateful to parents and Old Carthusians for their ever-present generosity and support.

One of the most exciting developments for our pupils is the accreditation of the Charterhouse Entrepreneurship Diploma (CED). I am proud to say that Charterhouse is the first UK school to offer an Entrepreneurship Diploma accredited by the ‘Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs’ (IOEE).

DEVELOPMENT REVIEW

PARTNERSHIPS ACROSS OUR COMMUNITY

At Charterhouse we recognise that we each have a responsibility to reflect upon everything we are fortunate enough to experience on campus and strive to make the most of the opportunities available to us. We teach our pupils to be kind and open-minded within our Carthusian community as well as being responsible in their support to give back locally, nationally and internationally.

Photos from the Science in School programme

This past academic year we focused on ways to move our partnerships forward and looked to build collaborations for the mutual benefit of everyone in our community. We are committed to providing our facilities and knowledge to support our local partners and we look forward to the expansion of this through The Hub and Art and Design Centre. During the past year, our Science in Schools programme welcomed pupils from partner schools to visit Charterhouse for science lessons and demonstrations. Sessions this year have included the science of fireworks and parachutes, chemical changes and complex practical lessons for Sixth Form pupils. We are proud that the ongoing partnership between Charterhouse and local state secondary Broadwater School, Godalming continues at pace. New activities include a Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Partnership in which pupils from Broadwater visit Charterhouse each week for training by our Contingent staff. The continuation of the academic mentoring and aspirations programme has supported Broadwater students to achieve their academic potential. This has been realised through close working partnerships between pupils and staff and the sharing of knowledge, resources and expertise. Additionally, we ran a combined Remove (Year 10) trip with the Tall Ships Trust. Each yacht was crewed by five Charterhouse and five Broadwater pupils

along with a member of staff from each school and provided a weekend of shared cooperation, fun and life lessons. Our beaks continue to provide free Easter GCSE revision courses for Year 11 students from the local area in Maths and Science, ensuring that disadvantaged young people and those in need of additional support can access it. Our staff were also delighted to host an IB Biology training course to help prepare teachers from a cross-section of UK schools for the new biology syllabus which started in September 2023. Carthusians and staff continue to volunteer in partner schools and charities. Activities this year included abseiling from Guildford Cathedral to raise money for local charity, The Meath, providing history lessons for local Beaver groups and historical tours for our community in Godalming. This term sees the launch of Charterhouse’s new volunteering initiative taking place two afternoons a week. We are excited to be able to welcome groups of pupils from some of our local state primary schools to partake in a carousel of activities including science, sport, drama and music. The pupils will be taught and hosted by our Specialists, using the facilities and resources at Charterhouse, to help inspire academic ambition and excellence while also helping to foster a culture and custom of philanthropy and care in our own pupils.

“Thanks so much for arranging our visit. David’s session for the children was outstanding and we all now want to be chemists (including me). I’ve heard many excited children talking about it with awe.” Victoria Davis, Eco Education Assistant, Loseley Fields

CHARTERHOUSE

DEVELOPMENT REVIEW

The generosity of the Carthusian Community raised £2.9 million to fully fund the newly refurbished Lecture Theatre and the development of The Hub, opened in autumn 2023. Thank you.

Business, leadership and entrepreneurship skills are at the heart of our academic and co-curricular offering at Charterhouse. We know that the workplace is constantly evolving and our pupils will need a depth of skills to enable them to be flexible and adaptable to the changing environment, so they are prepared for any eventuality. Our new £2.9million centre, known as The Hub, will provide a range of physical spaces in which skills and knowledge for business and the workplace can be developed. The Hub aims to mirror the type of modern open-plan flexible spaces seen in universities and business, providing opportunities for collaboration, risk taking, presentations and teamwork. The first phase of The Hub was completed in OQ 2022 with the refurbishment of the Lecture Theatre and we are delighted that the second phase is now complete. The Hub is located right in the heart of the School and has been fully funded by the generous philanthropy of our School community.

Alongside this, Charterhouse’s FutureU programme, of which the CED is a key component, is delivered alongside the academic and co-curricular programmes and provides every pupil with beyond-theclassroom courses, aimed at developing their transferable skills, real-world financial knowledge and an understanding of the world of employment.

8

“ In a first for Charterhouse, the programme will have a blended delivery, mixing teaching, case-studies and AI learning – as our Diploma uses the latest AI technology to help pupils with advice and feedback. The Diploma will give our sixth formers problem-solving skills, adaptability and employability. We firmly believe that an entrepreneurial mindset and the skills associated with it, will benefit all pupils, irrespective of their future plans.” Sandip Patel, Head of Entrepreneurship

Charterhouse is at the forefront of preparing our pupils for the future workplace and we are delighted to announce that we are the first School in the country to offer an Entrepreneurship Diploma accredited by the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise. The Charterhouse Entrepreneurship Diploma (CED), is a first-of-its-kind programme, aimed at nurturing the next generation of innovators. Starting this year, Sixth Form pupils will have the opportunity to gain a level 3 professional qualification in Applied Entrepreneurship, alongside their A Levels or International Baccalaureate courses. In addition, upon successful completion, pupils will gain 16 UCAS points. Again, this is the first time such a programme has carried UCAS credits.

COMMERCIAL UPDATE This past year has been a productive time with the programmed expansion of our Summer School, the launch of our Online School and the announcement of a second Charterhouse International School in Lagos. Enterprises This year has provided another stellar result with profits due to exceed £350,000. The Charterhouse Summer School (CSS), now in its second year, has expanded to around 100 pupils per two-week course, an increase of over 100% from 2022. We anticipate the CSS programme growing further in 2024 alongside the relaunched International Young Learners course which provides a two-week boarding experience for prep school pupils. We were delighted to welcome back the Nuclear History Programme, after a 4 year break, along with our regular clients ISCA, British Isles Music Festival, Shaftsbury Park, Chelsea Football Foundation Summer Camps, English Lacrosse Summer Camps and Harlequins Rugby Summer Camps, who this year have expanded their girls’ rugby course to mirror the boys’ course.

Our new Learn to Swim programme and partnerships with Guildford Hockey Club, Philippa Hogan School of Dance, Guildford Swim Club, Surrey Storm Netball and Farncombe Youth Football Club, continue to provide our local and School community with player pathways and discounted hire rates.

International and Online It was a pleasure to see the graduation this summer of our first pupils from Charterhouse Malaysia and we are delighted that the Charterhouse International family continues to grow with the announcement of Charterhouse Lagos. This brand-new school, for ages 5-18, will have a phased opening from 2024-2030. Alongside this, we launched Charterhouse Online, which offers a 1 year accelerated A level programme in six subjects. The mix of online and residential learning supports pupils through their A Levels.

We are committed to providing benefits to our local community and the Charterhouse Club will have brand new gym equipment installed in late 2023.

All our commercial activities provide important revenue for the School and profits are invested back into our bursary programmes.

DEVELOPMENT REVIEW

Message from the Director, External Relations & Foundation This past academic year has been the most successful for philanthropic income in our recent history, raising £3.7 million in gifts and pledges towards the School’s plans. I am extremely grateful to all members of our community who have generously chosen to support our vision and who help to enable Charterhouse to be the best coeducation boarding school in the UK. I am delighted to report that we have exceeded our fundraising target for the Business, Leadership and Entrepreneurship Hub (The Hub). The additional funds raised will be used to support the educational activities within The Hub, notably our new FutureU programme which prepares pupils for working life beyond Charterhouse. I wish to personally extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has made this possible. Our other masterplan projects in our Creating a New Tomorrow Together campaign have also received significant support this year with the Art and Design Centre receiving over £800,000 in pledges and donations. A leadership gift of £450,000 towards our Drama and Performing Arts Centre has enabled us to move the project forwards with work planned to start in 2024. The number of pupils benefitting from bursaries has increased by 33% to 73 this year and over £500,000 has been raised in gifts and pledges towards the programme from parents, OCs, Trusts and Foundations. bursaries, allowing us to reach pupils who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend Charterhouse. Furthermore, I am delighted to report figures include children from the “Homes for Ukraine” scheme. This year has seen a huge increase in our professional networking programme with many events being sold out. We have seen a rise in the number of mentoring relationships but most significantly these relationships have longevity, showing the benefit to both mentees and mentors. Charterhouse Connect now has over 3500 members and is actively allowing our whole community to provide support, advice and opportunities. All of my colleagues and I continue to be inspired by the enthusiasm and passion of the OCs, parents and Carthusians with whom we collaborate, and we thank you for your engagement. It is vital to build a strong and supportive community, bonded by a shared Carthusian identity. DEVELOPMENT REVIEW

CAPITAL PROGRESS

Drama and Performing Arts Centre Participation in the performing arts builds confidence, performance, communication and provides young people with the ability to think creatively and innovatively. Futhermore, they encourage the individual to find their voice, to explore their emotions and to expand their imagination. Our academic offering for Drama & Theatre Studies is thriving at both A Level and GCSE with double the number of pupils now opting to study the subject. Involvement in our cocurricular programme has grown in both dance and drama and this has only increased with coeducation. We will expand and modernise our existing professional standard Ben Travers Theatre into a facility providing more rehearsal and performance space for the creative arts. A new studio theatre will be created providing an additional rehearsal and small performance area, complete with semi-sprung dance floor, flexible seating and mirrors. The main theatre will have a much needed upgrade and house a new classroom dedicated to LAMDA providing more room for this popular drama and performance course. An enhanced and extended foyer and new outdoor patio will help improve the experience for visitors and pupils alike. 12

By exposing pupils to a high quality drama facility and professional equipment, we will enable them to develop their skills and confidence in performance, direction, management and technical support. Our most grateful and heartfelt thanks go to those who have shown initial leadership in support of this project. Work on this redevelopment will commence in 2024.

Art and Design As the School broke for the summer holidays, major works started to create the new Art and Design Centre. The new Centre will link together Art and Design departments for the first time at Charterhouse enabling these complimentary disciplines to help pupils and staff to collaborate further.

Breaking down the barriers between these 2 disciplines will help foster creative collaboration and marry artistic skill with the very highest levels of technical competence. Developing creative skills in both Art and Design will be invaluable for our pupils when they go into the workforce, providing them with both creative and technical knowledge and the collaborative skills to work interchangeably with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds and skillsets. In Summer 2022 we completed the refurbishment works of the John Derry Technical Centre (JDTC) providing pupils with more classroom space and upgraded equipment. The art extension will provide a brand new gallery area as well as flexible spaces for 3D sculpture, drawing and technology enabled art, such as film and animation. This stage of the project will be ready in Spring/Summer 2024 and will be followed by a full refurbishment of the existing art studios to complete the renovation. We are incredibly grateful to all those donors who have helped raise over £800,000 towards this project so far.

Music Music has always been at the heart of the Charterhouse community and today it is as important as ever. Generations of Carthusians have sung in the Chapel as part of their daily routine and the School still proudly boasts a wide variety of orchestras, choirs, bands, ensembles and soloists who regularly produce outstanding performances and concerts. Music provides pupils with the opportunity to learn and work creatively together, to explore and develop their personal talents and to share the joy of creative expression and honed, disciplined skills. As the School has grown, demand for our music courses (both academic and cocurricular) have increased and we now need to focus on creating more space for lessons, rehearsals and performances within the Ralph Vaughan Williams Music Centre. The expanded and refurbished building will see 50% more practice rooms, a fully equipped recording studio, a dedicated rock room and a new recital room. Work is due to start in 2025. DEVELOPMENT REVIEW

Bursaries – transforming lives Thomas Sutton’s founding intent was to provide an education for disadvantaged young people and this mission remains a key priority for the School. Bursaries provide transformative and life changing opportunities for each recipient, while ensuring that the School offers a diverse and socially inclusive community, that will benefit all of our pupils. Our enriching education inspires engagement and equips our pupils to grasp future opportunities, regardless of their individual backgrounds.

Our beaks, staff, parents and supporters around the globe all share a common goal – namely, to ensure our work advances education and supports as many young people as possible. All that we do is enhanced by the incredible generosity of our community, as you help us to deliver an education to those who will benefit most from the opportunities that Charterhouse can offer. In 2022/23 73 pupils received bursary support including 11 who were on fully funded places. Many commercial activities are undertaken each year, with 100% of profits invested back into the School’s bursaries programme, and we continue to broaden sustainable revenue streams to support the philanthropic aims of the School. Our motivation, to ensure that children of talent and promise are able to reach their full potential, is stronger than ever. The School’s mission is to increase the percentage of Carthusians receiving significant bursary support and offer over 10% of our pupils’ significant means tested fee support.

We recently spoke with bursary recipient Marthe (F12). Marthe was eager to share her experiences of receiving a transformational bursary:

Marthe (F12):

“I would be lying if I said that my two years as a Specialist at Charterhouse, were not the two most formative years of my life. Without Charterhouse, I would have never gone to Cambridge, nor be where I am now – a Senior Journalist for BBC News. I think the bursary scheme is invaluable, and I’m so grateful for it and the teaching I had at Charterhouse. I had never considered that Charterhouse would be an option for me due to the fees. We learned about bursary options through a family friend and after receiving a tour of Charterhouse I absolutely fell in love with the campus; the pupil who led our tour was amazing and seemed so at ease and comfortable. I studied English, History, Spanish and Theatre Studies. I owe everything to my Spanish and English teachers in particular, they were some of the first people to really push me and hold me to account. I was easily bottom of the year in Spanish when I joined and left with one of the top marks of my cohort and a level of proficiency that even allowed me to interview members of the Mexican Government in Spanish in 2022 through my work. There are many things I learned at Charterhouse that I took with me to university, but what really shaped me were the soft skills I gained. From my teachers I learned how to be critical and analytical, how to apply myself, and how to channel my enthusiasm and intellect into something productive. These are characteristics that have stood me in good stead well beyond my time at School. Upon leaving Charterhouse I took a gap year, where I worked full-time as a teaching assistant and trained for the Triathlon World Championships. I then went to Cambridge, where I studied Education with English Literature at St John’s College, graduating with a first. I worked as an assistant producer for BBC Sport initially, while writing freelance for HuffPost, the Guardian and Dazed amongst others. I then moved to Euronews (formerly Euronews NBC), where I started off as a digital producer, and then ended up as an Environmental Reporter and Head of Social Media. In 2022, I moved to BBC News where I now work as a Senior Broadcast Journalist. I love getting to work on breaking news again and creating content about such a huge range of domestic and international topics. An enormous thank you; my life would look completely different without the generosity of donors. Your donation isn’t just going towards helping someone for a few years, it’s helping build the rest of their life. I believe wholeheartedly that education is the most important tool in shaping a person and society – it’s why I studied education for my undergraduate degree. Gifting someone the holistic experience that you get at Charterhouse, (it’s about so much more than just the phenomenal teaching), is one of the greatest tools you can give an individual.”

Individuals like Marthe show the impact of bursary support and we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of all our parents and OCs whose donations help us to continue to grow this programme. 15

DEVELOPMENT REVIEW

NETWORKING | MENTORING CAREERS | VOLUNTEERING | COMMUNITY In today’s competitive job market, where connections and opportunities play a pivotal role, the value of alumni professional networking is often underestimated. We are so incredibly proud of the support offered by the Charterhouse community, allowing us to help so many OCs with their next steps. The growth in our networking, mentoring, and careers programme is a direct result of our strong community and its willingness to give back. This summer we said goodbye to the class of 2023, who are equipped and ready to embrace their next chapter beyond Charterhouse. Becoming an Old Carthusian has many benefits, not least joining the vibrant and supportive OC community. Over the last 12 months, the number of OCs and parents volunteering for one of our mentoring programmes has almost doubled. 70% of recent leavers have already engaged with the community and have made connections via our networking platform, Charterhouse Connect. The longevity of mentoring relationships has risen by 73% from the previous 2 years, meaning that the connections are becoming more meaningful. Charterhouse Connect is fast becoming a pivotal platform with 55% of the Charterhouse community registered as offering help and guidance. The Charterhouse Alumni Teams’ focus for the last 12 months has been growing the programme of activities that provide our community with further development. Attendance at networking events has doubled, with many of the receptions sold out. The number of internships and work experience placements being offered has increased by 68%, providing our younger OCs a greater variety of opportunities.

“ T hroughout my career, which is still in its early stages, I have met an enormous variety of individuals. Some of them I have admired, others I have found a challenge, but all of whom I have learnt from. This is the joy of personal development and self exploration, and is precisely why I have volunteered to be a mentor on Charterhouse Connect. We never stop learning, and the knowledge and perspectives we are able to share with others is what makes us so adaptable when facing new situations. I’ve always found mentoring a powerful support, and wish to be there for others in a similar way.” OC Quote – Mentoring “ T hank you to you and your team for organising last night’s reception. I thought it was a fantastic event and a great way to build out the network. I connected to several OCs and have arranged a further meeting, which I am very much looking forward to.” OC Quote – Networking “ I have used Charterhouse Connect to contact two Old Carthusians working in the conservation field and they have provided me with invaluable advice about university courses, their own career path, and even offered to host me at their place of work. It’s been a massive help.” Carthusian Quote – Careers The success of our programmes would not be possible if it were not for the substantial and generous support of our incredible community. All contributions, whether great or small, have a profound and positive impact on the careers of both current and future OCs. To become a part of our successful story, contact Karen Grindrod in the Foundation Office on karengrindrod@charterhouse.org.uk or +44 (0)1483 291759 to find out about the variety of ways you can offer your support.

Single and Regular Donations Both single and regular gifts can be made online at www.charterhousefoundation.org.uk; alternatively, you can complete and return the enclosed gift form. Regular gifts can be made monthly, quarterly or annually by direct debit and are incredibly helpful in allowing the School to plan ahead.

Tax-efficient Giving Gifts from UK taxpayers are eligible for Gift Aid, enabling us to reclaim an additional 25p for each £1 that you give. In addition, if you are a higher rate taxpayer you can reduce the real cost of your gift through reclaiming the balance between standard and higher rates of tax. Tax-efficient giving is also available in the USA and Hong Kong, please contact us for further details.

Gifts of Shares When making a gift of shares listed on any recognised stock market in the UK or overseas, the donor will not only avoid any Capital Gains Tax liability but can also offset the full value of the shares against their Income Tax liability. Please contact the Foundation Office for more information. 22

1611 Society The 1611 Society, named after the year the School was founded, celebrates the continuing generosity of our community. Members of the society support Charterhouse’s pupils in so many ways by providing the School with a regular and flexible stream of gift income, enabling us to plan for the future and benefit generations of Carthusians to come. There are three levels of membership: Founder’s Circle, Headmaster’s Circle and Member. To donate to the society, we invite you to become a regular donor and make a gift of either £10,611, £1,611 or £161.10 through the year. This can be done monthly or annually. Regular donations provide critical and continuous support for the School, year on year, whilst also allowing you to plan your giving.

Legacies and Bequests By remembering Charterhouse in your Will, you will leave a lasting impact on the School and join a tradition of benefaction initiated by Thomas Sutton in 1611. All legacies to the School from UK taxpayers are exempt from Inheritance Tax. If you would like your legacy to be directed in a particular way, we would be delighted to discuss this so that your wishes can be honoured in full. Please contact the Foundation Office for more information. 23
