2023/24

Becoming Future Ready

I am pleased to share the Development Review 2023–2024 which looks back at the impact of philanthropic and volunteering support during the past academic year.

The last academic year started with our largest pupil roll of 950 girls and boys and culminated in excellent summer exam results for our GCSE, IB and A Level pupils. 75% of GCSE grades were A* or A, IB pupils achieved an average of 37.5 points (the global average was 30.3) and overall 86% of our leavers achieved A* - B grades. This meant that the vast majority of our 2024 cohort were accepted into their first-choice university throughout the UK, USA and Europe. A truly outstanding result for all.

In June, I was delighted to welcome back OC Jay Mehta (P79) to open The Hub, our brand-new Business, Leadership and Entrepreneurship Centre and home to our FutureU programme. The Hub was developed as a space which would allow pupils and beaks to learn and develop in an environment similar to a university or an office. This addition to our campus has already had a significant impact, more than we could have anticipated. The new Lecture Theatre has hosted some superb visiting speakers (many of them Old Carthusians (OC’s)), I regularly see groups of Specialists working collaboratively in The Hub and it has enabled our beaks to be more innovative and flexible with their teaching. Additionally, it has supported our pupils to become familiar with using interactive technology and AI assistance in their studies and hashes. Thirty-five of our First Year Specialists completed the Entrepreneurship Diploma this year which is accredited by the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise (supported by OC mentors) and I am very pleased that in 2024/2025 we are expanding our FutureU programme to support our Fourths and Remove pupils, so they receive the early benefits of learning and working in this innovative environment.

The success of our School relies on the generosity of our whole community and I am very thankful to everyone who has helped over the last year, whether it be through philanthropic support, speaking at or attending an event, providing mentoring guidance or volunteering your time. I hugely appreciate the time and effort you give to help our great institution. The creation of The Hub itself, and all that it now provides, was only made possible through donations. When we conceived the idea, I hoped that it would interest enough of our donors to support the plans, but I have been truly overwhelmed by the generosity of our OCs and parents who have championed this project and enabled it to happen. Sincere thanks go to each and every one of you for your support which raised over £3 million for this amazing project which puts Charterhouse at the forefront of preparing pupils for future life.

This summer has seen the completion of the new Art and Design Engineering Centre, which provides four new classrooms and an enlarged gallery space to accommodate an expanding School as we move towards a 50:50 gender balance. In addition, Studio (our original art building) has been refurbished to ensure it offers the same level of facilities. The new centre provides much needed additional space for pupils to create and exhibit their work and I am incredibly grateful to all the donors who have supported this project, raising over £950,000.

In addition, earlier this year work began on the new studio theatre and enhanced foyer area in the Ben Travers Theatre (BTT), due to open in 2025 and supported by donations of £1.1 million. Drama, dance and musical theatre have seen a huge rise in interest and quality over the last few years and the new studio theatre will allow pupils to showcase development works and smaller productions, whilst also improving the experience for guests visiting the BTT.

Many Old Carthusians will have strong memories of the time they spent in Memorial Chapel, listening to and singing hymns accompanied by the organ. The organ is 100 years old and, unfortunately, it completely broke down last academic year and we are currently using an electronic substitute! Later in this publication you will hear more about our work to ensure we have a wonderful new pipe organ in Chapel once again, hopefully to coincide with the centenary of the opening of the building

in 1927. You will all appreciate the importance of a good organ for Chapel and School singing – the very heart of Charterhouse – and I hope you will be able to support us to provide the next generation of Carthusians with the opportunity to experience this incredible instrument, nurturing their own choral education and creating memories of congregational singing within Chapel.

It is a privilege to continue to support young people through our bursary programme and I am pleased to share that 72 Carthusians were in receipt of meaningful bursary provision during the past academic year. I am grateful to all those who donate towards this programme and help us to continue offering financial support to those pupils who require it the most. Despite the current headwinds around VAT, the governors and I remain steadfast in our commitment to Thomas Sutton’s founding intent to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to be able to attend Charterhouse on a bursary.

We continue to build the Charterhouse Family of Schools with Charterhouse Lagos recently welcoming their first students to its junior school. Earlier this year I had the pleasure of announcing Charterhouse Almaty which will open in September 2026. We are actively working on additional opportunities to help us increase commercial revenue further.

I extend my gratitude and heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported Charterhouse throughout the last year by giving your time, expertise or financial support. It creates a genuine impact and is truly valued by our pupils, staff and governors allowing Charterhouse to remain at the forefront of world-class education.

Charterhouse in the Community

At Charterhouse we value being part of our local community and seek to develop meaningful links, supporting local charities, schools and projects for the mutual benefit of all.

Last year (April 2023 – March 2024) our partnerships programme supported over 2000 pupils from 21 state schools, and around 1000 staff hours supported these activities. In addition, it is estimated that 350 Charterhouse pupils (and 10,000 pupil hours) have volunteered their time to support these activities.

Activities over the past year include our Science for Schools programme which welcomed pupils from partner schools to visit Charterhouse for science lessons and demonstrations. Sessions in this past year have included the science of fireworks, parachutes, maggots and chemical changes for primary school pupils and more complex practical lessons and lectures for pupils from secondary schools.

Our partnership with Broadwater School, a local state school in Godalming is especially important to us and we work closely with Broadwater to find activities which benefit and support both our sets of pupils. We continue to welcome 30 pupils from Broadwater each week for training by our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Contingent staff. Alongside this we work closely with Broadwater to provide academic mentoring and GCSE revision courses including English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. After the revision courses, also attended by Rodborough pupils, 94% of students indicated that they would wholeheartedly recommend the course to their peers, underlining the importance of our partnerships in providing educational opportunities for state school pupils.

We continue to welcome groups of pupils from some of our local state primary schools to partake in a carousel of activities including Science, Sport, Drama and Music. The pupils are hosted and taught by our Specialist pupils, with oversight from beaks. By using the facilities and resources at Charterhouse we can see it helps to inspire academic ambition and excellence while also fostering a culture and custom of philanthropy and care in our own pupils.

Our pupils’ passion and tradition for service continues. Led by the pupil charities committee, which works with all pupils to decide which causes the School supports each year, they have raised over £159,000 to support our chosen charities in the past academic year. The funds have been raised through pupil-led fundraising, including activities such as bake sales, fun runs and mufti days.

We have ambitious future plans to continue to develop our partnership programme and welcome support from our community to help us to expand. We are working with our current partners to understand their needs and their syllabus requirements to provide them with the relevant support. This year we are launching our ‘Exhibitions’, ‘The Cradle of Civilization’ and ‘Geology Rocks’, as well as Festival’s involving robotics and music partnerships to support the development of these skills in our local area.

Commercial Update

International and Online Schools

It has been an exciting few months, as Charterhouse Lagos welcomed their first pupils in September 2024. The outstanding campus, facilities and curriculum are a credit to the vision and hard work of our partners, Huntington Education Limited, and we wish John Todd, Director of Education, and the whole Charterhouse Lagos team every success as they lead the way in bringing world-class international education to Nigeria.

We were delighted to welcome a group of wonderful Year 12 students from Charterhouse Malaysia to Godalming in June as part of their UK universities tour. They threw themselves into a day filled with university preparation, performing arts, fives and racquets and were brilliant company. Charterhouse Malaysia has also been able to celebrate a second year of outstanding academic results at A Level, and likewise for their first cohort of GCSE students. Our congratulations go to the students and staff alike.

In June, we were thrilled to announce our third international school collaboration with the International Education Corporation, Kazakhstan. Their first school will open in the beautiful city of Almaty in the foothills of the Trans-Ilau mountains in August 2026. Further developments on three more continents are also underway.

The first students to study with Charterhouse Online were all able to achieve the grades they needed to progress successfully to the next stage of their academic careers whether that was to apply for their preferred higher education courses or to be accepted at their first choice university. This year Charterhouse Online has expanded the number of subjects available and further developed the bespoke approach to supporting students who need a back-up plan for completing their A Level studies. The successful ‘Boost’ revision courses launched last year will also be expanded to reflect wider demand in the year ahead.

Events, Lettings and Charterhouse Club

Commercial activity has never been busier or more positive with profits for the year exceeding £500,000. Now in its third year, the Charterhouse Summer School goes from strength to strength attracting around 150 students aged 10 to 15 from some 34 countries for each of the three two-week programmes, with 2025 on target for further growth. The Charterhouse Young Learners Programme, a boarding school taster experience for 8 to 12 year olds, relaunched after a break of four years, attracting 40 students from China, Hong Kong, Japan and the UK. Alongside our other regular residential clients and the plethora of non-residential bookings each year, including civil weddings, concerts, theatre shows, and sports bookings, in December 2023 the Sports Hall in the Charterhouse Club was transformed into a winter wonderland by the Big Balloon Build, helping to raise over £10,000 for local charities. In July, we were also delighted to host two high street fashion brands for their winter collection photo shoots.

The Charterhouse Club continues to re-establish itself as a leading health and fitness provider for the local community with membership growing steadily. A number of local clubs and organisations including Farncombe Youth Football Club, Guildford Hockey Club, Guildford City Swimming Club and Waverley Vipers Netball Club also continue to benefit from discounted access to our facilities through various partnership arrangements.

Charterhouse Young Learners

The Charterhouse Organ

As many of our community will be aware, the School’s historic Harrison & Harrison organ is in critical need of replacement.

The organ truly is the heart of Charterhouse and has been so for almost 100 years, since the consecration of Memorial Chapel in 1927. As we approach the centenary anniversary of Chapel in 2027, our new organ will be installed in time to commemorate this significant milestone in the School’s history.

Every member of our community will have their own unique memory of the organ. Many vividly recall the organ’s strident tones providing a booming accompaniment to congregational singing in Chapel, while others write of how mastering the instrument has culminated in a lifelong passion for music. As Timothy Parsons (B10), now Director of Music at Wells Cathedral, so beautifully writes: ‘If the Chapel services are the voice of the School, then the organ is its heartbeat.’

We are delighted to be working with Nicholson & Co Ltd on the new organ who have understood our vision for a unique instrument with the versatility to tackle a wide range of repertoire. The organ will take tonal inspiration from the French Romantic style and will be built within the divided case work of the old organ, masterfully designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott.

We are excited for future generations to be able to experience singing along with and playing the organ in Chapel, in turn creating their own sacred memories of ceremonial life at Charterhouse.

Over the coming months and years, we will share news about the organ and how you can support the project.

Message from the Director, External Relations & Foundation

Charterhouse’s philanthropic traditions have continued during the last twelve months, donating £2.62 million to a range of projects and needs. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to say that our supporters continue to leave a lasting impression on the School’s campus and its community, one which is sure to be of benefit for generations to come.

Seventy-two pupils benefited from bursaries this year. Over £300,000 in donations has contributed to the £1.9m spent on providing a Charterhouse education, irrespective of means, in 2023/24. Such awards add immeasurably to both each individual and the whole School community and enable us to remain true to our Founder’s principles.

This year’s capital priority projects have progressed successfully. The Art and Design Engineering Centre was completed in October 2024. £1.1m has been generously donated to the development of our new Drama and Performing Arts Centre and construction work has now begun.

Our range of professional networking programmes have gone from strength to strength during the year with hundreds of OCs, parents and pupils benefiting. Pupils have particularly enjoyed having many opportunities to network with OCs and parents

in formal settings away from School, gaining valuable insights into professional life, as well as having the chance to practice their networking and presentation skills in a real-world setting. Such events have become an important addition to the School’s FutureU programme, delivered throughout all five of our year groups, ensuring that everyone can proactively develop the transferable skills, professional knowledge, experiences and mindset required to thrive throughout their later lives.

I take this opportunity to renew both my personal thanks, and also those of all of my colleagues across the School, for the continuing advocacy and support of our OCs, parents and friends of the School. You continue to make such a valuable difference, the likes of which will continue to be of utmost importance in the year ahead.

Capital Progress

Performing Arts Centre

We know that drama and performance help young people to build confidence and communication skills as well as providing a safe space for them to explore their imagination and to find their voice. Since the introduction of coeducation at Charterhouse, dance and drama have increased in popularity. The success of our most recent musical, Legally Blonde, evidenced not only the demand from our audiences (performances were sold out each night) but also the desire from our pupils to get involved as we had two full casts rotating performances. Furthermore, our drama courses at both A Level and GCSE continue to be popular.

As part of the capital masterplan, we identified the need to expand our creative arts provision to provide more opportunities for the development of key skills through the performing arts. During the Easter break, work began on the extension to the Ben Travers Theatre (BTT) to create a new studio theatre, a room dedicated to LAMDA and an enhanced foyer area.

“ I know my son’s time at Charterhouse was the best decision we could have made for his education. He has thrived, flourished and has made lifelong friendships. Charterhouse was always the number one school for our son, and gaining a place at Charterhouse cemented our decision to send him to a school outside of our home country.

I am amazed and excited for the future of Charterhouse. Incredible things are happening and have happened during our time at the School. I am extremely pleased to give back to the School as a donor.”

The new studio theatre will have flexible seating so it can host intimate productions and rehearsals in a variety of formats. It will also have a semi-sprung floor for dance practice and shows. Additionally we are creating an enlarged foyer area to improve visitor experience as well a dedicate classroom for the teaching of LAMDA courses and exams.

We are pleased to report that building works are progressing well, and we hope the new facilities will be open to pupils and our external partners by the Summer of 2025.

Thank you to all donors who have supported this project and helped to raise over £1.1m towards it. We are very grateful to you all.

Art & Design Engineering Centre

In May this year we were delighted to open the extension to our art building, known as Studio, to pupils. The new building, partially funded by the generosity of our community, contains four brand new classrooms, including a dedicated textile studio as well as an enhanced gallery and exhibition area. The new development has all been designed with lots of light and space for the pupils to be able to create and display their work. At the same time as the opening of the new classrooms, the builders moved into Studio to refurbish the existing classrooms and gallery area as well as creating a physical link between Studio and the John Derry Technical Centre. Outside, we have created a garden area between the two buildings for outdoor learning. The completed building opened this autumn to pupils.

The new Art and Design Engineering Centre has provided a synergy between the two disciplines of art and design technology for the first time. It creates a more integrated learning space which will be invaluable in providing our pupils with both the creative and technical knowledge they need to go into the workplace and collaborate with colleagues who have different skill sets.

Music

The final part of our current capital masterplan is the redevelopment of the Ralph Vaughan Williams Music Centre. The RVW Music Centre is the centre of our academic and co-curricular music programmes. The demand for practice rooms and teaching space is higher than ever due to the increasing popularity of pupil bands, ensembles and soloists in both classical and modern music.

We understand the importance of music to the whole Carthusian Community as it is part of the DNA of the School. Music provides our pupils with the opportunity to learn and create together as well as cementing a lifelong passion of music and the development of performance skills which they can use throughout their lives.

Our ambition is to harness and grow this passion and to provide the facilities to explore and create. To support this, we will build an extension which will double the size of the RVW Music Centre. It will provide a multitude of new practice rooms alongside a dedicated orchestral room and a new recording studio. The current Bill Llewellyn Room will be refurbished and will become a dedicated rock music room. Outside we will construct an external performance space in the shadow of Memorial Chapel.

We are very grateful to the early lead donors who have supported this project, and we anticipate that work will begin in 2026.

Bursaries – transforming lives

We speak often of Thomas Sutton’s founding intent to support the education of 40 scholars of limited means. This legacy remains paramount to the School’s ambitions and vision for the future, as we strive to support more gifted young pupils. Regardless of individual background, our bursary programme offers each beneficiary a unique opportunity to thrive in an academically enriching environment while being challenged to think creatively and independently. By upholding the traditions of Sutton’s legacy, we are ensuring that Charterhouse continues to offer a diverse and socially inclusive community that benefits pupils, staff and our wider community alike.

72 pupils with meaningful bursaries Including 11 pupils on 107% bursaries

Our bursary programme is entirely underpinned by those who support it, and we are humbled to have an incredibly generous network of OCs, parents and friends of the School who share in our mission to increase bursary provision at Charterhouse.

In 2023/24 72 pupils (approx. 8% of the pupil body) received meaningful bursary support. In order to facilitate this, increased commercial activity took place over the last year, with 100% of profits invested back into the School’s bursaries programme. We are also expanding additional revenue streams, including our international and online school presence, to support the School’s long term philanthropic aims.

We continue striving to offer over 10% of our pupils significant means-tested bursaries, and hope that many more members of our community will choose to share in this mission by showing their support.

We spoke to the parents of a recent leaver who was a bursary recipient, to hear more about their experience.

We wanted to find a school which was able to give our son the best education possible.

We attended an open day and realised that Charterhouse was exactly what we were looking for: a strong focus on academic excellence but not at the expense of other aspects of a good all-round education such as music, sports and the creative arts, and a supportive boarding culture with almost a family feel to the School (despite its size). However, the fees were considerably beyond the means of our family. Fortunately, we had a very helpful conversation with the then Registrar, and he explained the historical ethos to Charterhouse and the provision of bursary places. Without his intervention, we would never have taken the step of applying to Charterhouse.

While the provision of an excellent all-round education was particularly appealing, we also liked Charterhouse being a traditional public boarding school with a supportive culture whilst encouraging independence. Aside from academic teaching, one part of our son’s Carthusian experience that has stood out was the fact that he has been able to take part in so many different, unique and special activities which he was unlikely to have experienced in another school.

Another beneficial part of the Carthusian experience was the diversity of pupils –unlike some other schools which focus solely on academic excellence, Charterhouse tends to have a broader intake, so it has pupils from many different backgrounds and those with notable talent in, for example, sport or the creative arts.

I think what has been particularly important was getting the balance right between supportive teaching and encouraging him to think and learn independently (and to be curious). Charterhouse has given our son an excellent degree of independence and resilience – there have been many occasions where he has had to take personal responsibility and ownership for getting something done.

To those who support bursaries at Charterhouse – first and foremost, a heartfelt thank you! Charterhouse is a wonderful and historic school, but it would be much the poorer without being able to broaden its intake to pupils who have much to offer, but for whom the fees are well outside their reach.

It seems absolutely essential that such a fantastic education remains accessible, and indeed that was the rationale behind the original establishment of the Charterhouse by Thomas Sutton. With the cost of private school education set to increase even further, bursaries play a critical role in broadening access.

Looking to the Future

We remain committed to growing our bursary programme to offer more individuals a chance to experience the incredible opportunities that Charterhouse offers, and to thrive both academically and personally as a result.

Networking Mentoring Careers Volunteering Community

Our Charterhouse community continues to benefit from the vast professional experience and knowledge our members so generously share with our pupils, parents and OCs across our professional networking, mentoring and guest speaker series.

Across the 2023-2024 academic year, we organised no fewer than 27 opportunities for Specialists to make crucial connections with parents and OCs, allowing them the chance to network, receive career advice and to build meaningful relationships with mentors. Our professional networking events for law, finance and property have proven incredibly popular and return this academic year. Following your feedback we have now expanded the programme to include an “All Industries” networking event to allow crossindustry connections to flourish across our community.

Through our networking platform, Charterhouse Connect, 174 mentoring relationships have been fostered. With 85% of our class of 2024 already engaged on Connect, we anticipate more mentoring relationships will be forged in the coming months. We know that in the current competitive job market, networking and mentoring connections can often provide that extra edge and we are incredibly thankful for your ongoing support. We encourage you to join Charterhouse Connect, if you haven’t already!

Supporting Charterhouse

The generosity of the Charterhouse Community continues to enable us to provide the best education for our pupils so we can prepare them with the skills, knowledge and values they need for tomorrow’s world.

Single and Regular Donations

Single and regular gifts can be made online at charterhousefoundation.org.uk; alternatively, you can complete and return the enclosed gift form. Regular gifts can be made monthly, quarterly or annually by direct debit and are incredibly helpful in allowing the School to plan ahead.

Tax-efficient Giving

Gifts from UK taxpayers are eligible for Gift Aid, enabling us to reclaim an additional 25p for each £1 that you give. In addition, if you are a higher rate taxpayer you can reduce the real cost of your gift through reclaiming the balance between standard and higher rates of tax. Tax-efficient giving is also available in the USA and Hong Kong.

Gifts of Shares

When making a gift of shares listed on any recognised stock market in the UK or overseas, the donor will not only avoid any Capital Gains Tax liability but can also offset the full value of the shares against their Income Tax liability.

1611 Society

The 1611 Society, named after the year the School was founded, celebrates the continuing generosity of our community. Members of the society support Charterhouse’s pupils in so many ways by providing the School with a regular and flexible stream of gift income, enabling us to plan for the future and benefit generations of Carthusians to come.

There are three levels of membership: Founder’s Circle, Headmaster’s Circle and Member. To donate to the society, we invite you to become a regular donor and make a gift of either £10,611, £1,611 or £161.10 through the year. This can be done monthly or annually.

Legacies and Bequests

By remembering Charterhouse in your will, you can leave a lasting impact on the School and join a tradition of benefaction initiated by Thomas Sutton in 1611. All legacies to the School from UK taxpayers are exempt from Inheritance Tax. If you would like your legacy to be directed in a particular way, we would be delighted to discuss this so that your wishes can be honoured in full.

Class Gift

Each year, the parents of our leaving year group of Second Year Specialists, are invited to leave their deposit to support the Charterhouse bursary fund as part of their child’s class gift. In 2024, over £50,000 was raised through the class gift and we challenge each year group to do better than the last!

If you would like to discuss any of these options, please contact the Foundation Office on +44 (0)1483 291759 or foundation@charterhouse.org.uk
