Question 2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The target audience of my media product are aged 15-25 year old females. I also based my target audience around a social group, this social group is Urban Outfitters, and within this social group Trendies and Aspirants are established. The images shown below are examples of what my target audience and aimed social groups would look like. Trendies are said to be ‘getting younger by the day’ due to their lifestyle. This lifestyle includes getting the latest thing which is ‘hot’ before it is advertised and others are able to purchase this ‘look’ from high streets or online. This is usually from unexpected places e.g. vintage and charity shops. This life style and interest has been evolved from the outbreak of brands like Topshop or Urban Outfitters which offer the type of fashion Trendies look for, for example the hipster-influenced styles. They are inspired by the current trends and the fashion icons of celebrities and media brands for inspiration regarding music and fashion. Fashion is the main love of Trendies yet music is also a key interest of theirs. Both of those subjects are featured in my magazine for that reason. Aswell as the music and fashion, online media is very important to this social group, for example Instagram, FaceBook, Twitter and Tumblr. All of these sites use hashtags which is why I have created one for my magazine. Aspirants are known to ‘live for the moment’, they perceive the look, lifestyle and music they wish for and are willing to spend money to achieve it. They try to keep up with news within these areas and are much attuned to what’s happening in Leading Edge Circles. Their aim is to keep up with what’s ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ but without all the effort of developing this themselves. This social group is most likely to be found in Student Unions across the UK, from UE to Loughborough. They are seen to be ‘social butterflies’ as they spend their summer holidays attending the big festivals circuit. Even the newest food truck, art gallery, pop-up or nightclub, they aspire to be the one to have first seen/experienced it, to then post on a social media sire. Social media is also as important to Aspirants as it is Trendies. They seek experience and love introducing the latest fashion and music to their social group. Aspirants are vast consumers of strong brand identities.


My magazine suits these social groups as both Trendies and Aspirants are interested in fashion, music and social media. These 3 subjects are the main elements of my magazine which is why my media product would be ideal for them to read. The colours and fonts I used also interest a female audience due to the purples and teal blues. My magazine is mostly black and white which is very modern and stylish (like Trendies and Aspirants). By using female models it also creates an attachment to the audience which will captivate them. By using these I am able to attract my target audience and the social groups they are involved with.
