Originally from Lawrence, Massachusetts, Martinez relocated to Charlotte in 2011 and has grown to love her new home As a first-generation Dominican with a unique perspective, she has made it her goal to showcase the city through an authentic lens “Small businesses mean a dream to me There’s a dream in that donut shop, in that coffee shop," she says, emphasizing her commitment to capturing the true essence of each place she visits.
Her social media platforms, followed by over 5,000 food lovers, have become a go-to for those looking to explore the diverse food scene in Charlotte But for Martinez, it’s not just about the food it’s about bringing the city’s culture and community to life "I want people to see the good parts of Charlotte and really feel it When they visit the places I feature, I want them to experience it the same way I did "
Growing her following hasn’t come without challenges, but Martinez attributes her success to consistency and the power of collaboration. "My followers have grown because of my reels and collaborations, but I’ve been a bit stagnant lately I want to get back to the joy of creating," she admits
Balancing her influencer work with her role as a full-time entrepreneur, Martinez approaches her content creation with authenticity, never focusing too much on strategy but rather on passion. It has something for everyone Afro Latinos, Greek festivals, Indian festivals it’s just such a beautiful city."
Despite the progress Charlotte has made, Martinez acknowledges that being an AfroLatina influencer comes with its own set of challenges "Sometimes, people don’t understand what it means to be Afro-Latina I am Black, and I am Latin Representation matters I want people to see that we can be in these spaces, collaborate, and not be in competition " Her work aims to break down these barriers and foster a more inclusive food and influencer community
One of the key aspects of Martinez’s content is her dedication to authenticity She’s known for refusing to make substitutions when dining out, believing that the dish served is a reflection of the chef’s or artist’s heart "I want it to be real," she says "When I go to a restaurant, I tell them not to give me anything special just what any customer would get That’s the experience I want to share with my followers "

The construction industry has long been a male-dominated space, and women of color remain particularly underrepresented. Yet, their voices and perspectives are crucial to creating inclusive, diverse, and forward-thinking projects. As architects, project managers, real estate developers, women of color bring Fresh ideas, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of their communities qualities that are too often overlooked in the construction world. In this feature, we’re shining a light on three remarkable women breaking barriers in construction.
First, Elisa Caldwell, founder of Caldwell Kinard LLC, discusses her work in real estate development, focusing on building sustainable, communitycentered housing for working-class families. Next, Melanie Reddrick, a Senior Architect and Regional Director at Passero Associates, shares her experiences in architecture and her passion for creating affordable housing through mentorship and community engagement Finally, Kayla Gore, an Assistant Project Manager at NJR Construction, reflects on her journey from civil engineering student to construction professional and the importance of encouraging more women to explore careers in the field These women are not only changing the face of construction, but they are also proving that diverse voices are essential to building better, stronger communities
By Bri Harper
Elisa Caldwell, founder of Caldwell Kinard LLC, isn't just constructing buildings she’s constructing a future Armed with a degree in psychology and a passion for people, Caldwell’s vision is clear: to create communities that foster growth, connection, and opportunity.
"I’m not just building houses; I’m building futures," Caldwell shares, her enthusiasm palpable. Her journey into real estate development was sparked by her recognition of marginalized communities with scarce opportunities and resources Growing up in a small rural town, Caldwell often thought, "Someone should do something about this " Little did she know she would become that someone
“If a problem won’t let you rest, then God wants you to be part of the solution,” she affirms Inspired by her faith and a desire to be a change-maker, Caldwell became a licensed contractor and launched Caldwell Kinard LLC in 2012 As a woman of color in the construction industry, she brought a fresh perspective, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and community-centered design.
"You need diversity in the room to build communities that work for everyone," she says. "Women bring attention to detail and a commitment to creating spaces that people can thrive in We’re not just about bricks and mortar but about people "
Her mission is threefold: to provide safe, sustainable, and affordable homes for workingclass families, to create communities that uplift those families, and to connect people with the resources they need to succeed. One day, she dreams of developing a mixed-use project that embodies these values, symbolizing her journey from dreamer to doer
Her journey wasn’t without challenges. Coming from a neighborhood with limited resources, Caldwell lacked capital and mentors. "No one was interested in hearing my ideas, let alone guiding me through real estate development," she recalls Undeterred, Caldwell poured herself into learning, taking entry-level jobs in construction and devouring books from the library to learn the ropes. Even when the odds were against her, she didn’t back down.
Faith has always been her cornerstone "If God is in it, I can’t fail," she says confidently "I’ve stumbled and been bruised, but failure isn’t an option This is bigger than me "
Her workday has always been a balancing act building communities by day and raising her three daughters by night A single mom, Caldwell instilled the same work ethic in her children, who spent their summers working for her, learning the ropes of the family business “They started from the bottom answering phones, setting up inspections, and even making coffee,” she says with a smile “It wasn’t easy, but they thank me for it today.”
Her youngest, Sydney, is now pursuing a degree in urban development, continuing the family’s legacy of building equitable communities "Lifestyle matters," Caldwell beams, "and I’m proud my daughters share my passion for creating spaces where people can live the lives they dream of "
Caldwell’s electrician brother has also joined her team, making Caldwell Kinard LLC a true family affair Together, they’re revitalizing neighborhoods, repurposing real estate, and giving new life to communities.
Despite the challenges, the satisfaction far outweighs the work. Elisa Caldwell has not only built a thriving business she’s built a legacy of hope, determination, and triumph For Caldwell, every project is personal "I like to say we help create sustainable families using real estate as the foundation. When you put people first, you build something that lasts "

There are only about 600 licensed Black female architects across the U S , and among this distinguished group is Charlotte native Melanie Reddrick With over two decades of experience, Melanie has become a trailblazer in the architecture industry, leaving a lasting impact locally and across North Carolina.
Melanie began her career in 2003, working on various projects, from multifamily and single-family housing to public spaces, education, retail, and transit developments. Her resume includes master planning for Gardner-Webb University, interior renovations at Queens University and Appalachian State, and a parking deck project at Appalachian State She also led the renovation of the Northeastern University campus in Charlotte. Now at Passero Associates, her recent work includes a large multi-family project in the University area of Charlotte, with more projects underway in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Burlington
"I feel like I’ve become a valuable resource for women in this industry locally,” says Melanie She has witnessed and been part of the dynamic architectural shifts, especially around gender representation "Classrooms today are about half male and half female, which reflects the national demographic Architecture has made huge strides in terms of gender equity "
However, while architecture has progressed in gender equality, Melanie emphasizes the need for more racial diversity. “Any service industry that caters to a wide range of people will serve them best when those people can find practitioners who look like them, think like them, and understand their
perspectives,” she explains “Greater diversity means better representation and better outcomes for everyone involved.”Reflecting on her early career, Melanie notes the valuable hands-on experience she gained while managing construction administration on the projects she designed. "I learned the most on job sites It was an invaluable experience," she recalls Entering the profession when women were becoming more common in both
starting in the profession know that architecture is a a career that welcomes them even at the highest levels,” Melanie says with pride
architecture and construction, Melanie acknowledges that the path has been smooth for her overall However, balancing family and career presented its challenges “Stepping away from the workforce when my children were young and re-entering after almost five years was difficult But the profession is more family-friendly and flexible now than it used to be.”
Next year, Melanie will step into the role of President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in North Carolina. This leadership position highlights her contributions and is sure to inspire the next generation of architects, particularly women of color “Being visible at this the level is going to help young women
Though she has worked on a wide range of projects, affordable housing is where Melanie’s heart lies She is partnering with Habitat for Humanity and private developers to create resilient, sustainable, and
safe homes for those in need. “It’s been such an exciting journey,” Melanie says “I truly believe we’re going to make a real difference in creating affordable housing for our citizens. That’s our heart project.”
Melanie Reddrick continues to lead, build, and mentor, shaping the future of Charlotte’s skyline and paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive architecture industry.

As children, we often dream big some of us imagine soaring through space as astronauts, twirling on stage as ballerinas, or rocking out in front of thousands But for Kayla Gore, her dream was a bit different: “I wanted to design roller coasters,” she admits with a laugh “I know that sounds far-fetched.”
That dream, however, became the first spark of her journey Enrolling as a freshman at North Carolina A&T University, Kayla pursued civil engineering, fully intent on bringing her childhood aspiration to life But sometimes, the path to our goals can take unexpected turns Kayla discovered her true calling lay in a different yet equally dynamic field construction management “I realized I could do this; I liked it,” she recalls “It was a bit easier than engineering, so it worked out Plus, the construction management department at A&T is very close-knit It felt like the right fit ”
Her decision was more than just a career pivot; it was a step toward an industry where women remain underrepresented In her graduating class, Kayla was one of only two women, a reality that highlighted the growing need for diversity and the unique contributions women bring to the construction field
“Women, we have this innate attention to detail,” she explains “I think having women in construction adds a different point of view It diversifies the field in ways that really matter.”
Today, Kayla Gore is an Assistant Project Manager and Assistant Estimator at NJR Construction, LLC Her role offers her the best of both worlds some days, she spends in the office reviewing blueprints, pricing bids, and ensuring quality control, while others take her to job sites, where she oversees projects in action A blend of creativity, strategy, and hands-on involvement that keeps her engaged. But despite her success, she knows there’s still a misconception about what it means to work in construction,
especially for women “To me, there’s no reason why women can’t be in construction,” Kayla says. “People often assume you’re out there with a hard hat doing physical labor, but that’s not always the case There are so many roles, from project management to design, that have nothing to do with lifting a hammer.”
Kayla is passionate about spreading awareness and encouraging younger generations especially women to consider careers in construction She believes that with more outreach, the industry can break long-standing stereotypes and open new doors for women to excel in areas where their talents are needed
Her dream of designing roller coasters is still very much alive, and she continues to set her sights on more creative and
ambitious projects Whether it’s building the next big thrill ride or diving into more artistic forms of construction, Kayla’s passion for her work drives her forward Her dream of designing roller coasters is still very much alive, and she continues to set her sights on more creative and ambitious projects. Whether it’s building the next big thrill ride or diving into more artistic forms of construction, Kayla’s passion for her work drives her forward. “I encourage people to go for their dreams. Don’t limit yourself. Don’t hesitate Just do what you feel is best for you,” she says, a testament to her own journey of perseverance and passion
By Veronica Pearson

As the owner of Dammi Properties, Veronica is not just constructing homes she’s creating legacies. Her journey into residential home development is defined by a powerful combination of vision, dedication, and collaboration, transforming her into a rising star in real estate

communities nationwide As Harris’s campaign gains momentum, her focus on issues like voting rights, economic equity, and social justice continues to resonate, driving historic numbers of new registrations and ensuring that diverse voices will be heard in the upcoming election.
As the 2024 election season heats up, North Carolina has become a key battleground in both national and statewide races With competitive contests for the presidency, governor and superintendent of public instruction, voter turnout will be crucial in determining the state’s future direction
Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign has ignited a surge in voter registration, particularly among women of color. The governor’s race is equally contentious. Republican candidate Mark Robinson, currently the lieutenant governor, has sparked controversy with his outspoken views on social issues, including referring to LGBTQ+ people as “demonic,” “filth,” and “maggots ” He drew a wide range of condemnation for stating that women get abortions because they can’t keep their “skirt down” and that some folks out there “need killing ” His Democratic opponent, Josh Stein, the current attorney general, is positioning himself as a moderate leader focused on expanding healthcare access and protecting civil rights. The contrast between the candidates has made this race one of the most watched in the country
